It isn't that the blood is itself bad, but rather than it is the source of sanguine humour. According to humourism, the body is healthy if the four humours - sanguine, melancholic, choleric and phlegmatic - are in balance. Each humour is associated with a bodily substance: blood in the case of sanguine, black bile in the case of melancholic, yellow bile in the case of choleric, and phlegm in the case of phlegmatic. People had different natural balances of these humours, thereby leading to different personality types. However if the humours got too out of balance, illness would result. Bleeding a patient (or using leeches) was done to remove excess sanguine humour. There were other ways of relieving excess of the other humours (cupping, sweating, inducing vomiting or urinating, etc.). We hear about bleeding more because, according to Galen, sanguine humour was the most common.
My feeling is you can look at this film a few different ways. It's either- 1) all real & there are witches & Black Philip is the devil, 2) allegorical about the fear & hysteria at the time around girls coming of age (menstruation, etc.) & the "witchy ways" of women (note how Caleb & the father linger on Thomasin & the comments from the mother), 3) the family succumbing to religious hysteria driven by isolation, malnutrition & their strong beliefs (I inferred that their banishment was because their beliefs were considered crazy even by the 17th century standards of the village, which would mimic to an extent why the Pilgrims left England ("too liberal") or why Roger Williams founded Rhode Island ("Massachusetts too conservative")), or 4) taking its cues from what historians now believe was the cause of the witch hysteria centered around Salem, MA: hallucinatory side effects of consuming ergot through rye bread. Ergot is a fungus that replaces shoots on rye grain & when consumed causes hallucinations, delusions, fits & spasms. It's most common during wet conditions & no one knew what it did to the body. Historians studied maps of Salem, plotted where all the "witches" & their accusers all lived in relation to the various crop farms they would have sourced food from, gleaned symptoms the "witches" were claimed to have & studied the weather records of the time. They came to a hypothesis that the conditions were perfect for an ergot outbreak. This would also explain the mass hysteria since a great deal of people would all be going through this. (Or, all the of above lol.)
I personally believe that everything was real, but it was the family’s own actions that spelled their fate. The witch hardly actively did anything to the family, except Samual, and rather waited/allowed the family to tear itself apart.
This is definitely a movie for people who love and are familiar with witch folklore and witchcraft. Because a lot of this movie is based in very traditional witch folklore that only people that are very familiar with the subject would understand. Like using the baby to make flying ointment in the beginning of the movie, using glamour spells on the family to make them see whatever the witch wants them to see, using a black goat to symbolize the devil, or the witches’ sabbath at the end of the movie. So if witchcraft and witch folklore isn’t really your jam, I can understand not liking this movie.

I find this movie to be very well made, and an interesting story but at the same time I would assume that most people would have an aversion to the idea that people used babies to make flying ointment wether they're into the folklore or not....at least I would hope that's the case.
You have to understand that the puritans came to America in part because they were much too extreme in their beliefs for the church of England. For someone to be ousted from the puritans for extremism in THIS period they would have to be zealots of an impossible level
The Puritans were obsessed with piety, so it’s unlikely it would’ve been because he was “too” pious. What’s more likely is that he openly espoused (or even worse, preached) theological or ecclesiastical views that differed from what was the official doctrine.
yeah the people of the Mayflower after it left England first it went to the Netherlands, and after awile they were also ousted there from being too religious, from there on they went to the americas

Y'all should look up the real history behind this movie: The Salem Witch Trials in the 1600's. Christians would claim 'witchcraft/witch' on anyone (mostly women) that wronged them, and the church would force them stand trial through various methods of torture, for the entire town to see. If they survived (which never happened) they were obviously a witch. But if they 💀they'd go to heaven, so everyone was cool about it. 😳Crazy but true!
I actually think the 'only witches survive torture, the innocent die' part mostly doesn't apply to the Salem trials. Out of 200 accused and the thirty found guilty at trial (most people were found innocent), there was (as far as I know) only one person who died from torture. The eighteen others that died either died in prison awaiting trial or were executed. The one that was tortured to death was Giles Corey, an old man who refused to enter a plea of either guilty or innocent and died horrifically. But generally I think the 'torture someone until they die, if they survive they're guilty' approach wasn't really practiced during the Trials. It may apply in another historical situation though! Salem's just an area I'm more familiar with. One thing that's interesting about the trials in Salem is that even though other states had witch trials (Connecticut's trials, which came earlier, span more than a decade in fact), Salem's was considered odd even at the time. This partially was because their trials allowed for 'spectral evidence' (basically claims that something occult happened with little/no evidence) to be submitted- something that was largely considered outdated at the time. Many other courts would not allow such evidence. Additionally, they executed far more people in a shorter amount of time than most other areas in the US. Also interesting is that within only a decade or so, the trials were largely condemned and there were vocal pushes for those found guilty to be declared innocent (especially from their families, of course). You really see a deep shame and guilt about it very soon afterwards in terms of how people felt about participating in it, even blaming Satan for misleading them, asking for forgiveness, etc. It really highlights how unusual and how jarringly horrific and sudden the Trials were, and how clearly wrong they were once the panic had passed.

Mark Korven's musical score for The VVitch is one of the most surreal and haunting soundtracks I've heard in a long while and it can truly test the listener's patience. It is filled with suspense, dread and dissonance with some surprisingly beautiful and almost gothic/hauntingly atmospheric parts. The score is also very minimum in its approach. Its just strings (the cello and nyckelharpa in particular), a hurdy-gurdy, waterphones, percussions and female choirs. The choirs almost always sends a chill down my spine!

This and The Babadook and Midsommar helped generate what has been a golden age in horror, which in the past was very hit and miss and polluted with slasher BS films did little to generate any sense of dread or true menace. Looking forward to director Robert Eggers's adaptation of Nosferatu.
These are old-school Protestants, but they still held some remnants of Catholic theology. As a Catholic, we pray for the souls of unbaptized babies because we believe baptism to be salvific. Without baptism one can't enter heaven because baptism is what cleanses us of original sin. However, because children that die before a certain age are incapable of sin (except original sin, which we're all born with), we pray for God's mercy that He will accept those babies' souls. There are Biblical passages that make us hopeful of this, particularly in the book of Matthew: "But Jesus said, 'Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.'” Great reaction! This movie is terrifying!
My dad and I were going to watch it when it came out but the second it got the part with the baby getting ground up my dad wasn't having it. He turned it off and was pissed that a movie would even imply that that was happening to a baby. I watched it last year for the first time all the way through. I also sat in silence at the end lol

This was one of the movies that made me sit in silence for a few minutes after it ended 😅 I really enjoyed it though. When I first watched it, I got it confused with the Blair Witch documentary so I had no idea what I was getting into lmao
Eggers wanted the movie to be authentic to the period so all of the clothes, tools, housing, etc are copied from over 400 years old. Most admirable is the language, Old English, which the actors learned the dialogue in. That is very impressive!
Wow, didn’t expect a horror reaction in February. I love this movie. It is so cinematically beautiful, and the performances are outstanding. They thought the baby wasn’t in heaven because they believed all people were born with Original Sin, which is only forgiven through Baptism.
I was literally just thinking that I hope y’all watch this, I love this movie and if I’m correct it was Anya Taylor Joys first movie. So good, and very period accurate. The stuff you see in the movie is actually what people of the time believed of witches, ie the bargain w the devil and the signing of his book, rubbing baby fat all over themselves to make them fly, appearing as animals aka familiars such as crows, rabbits, and ravens, the reason why they were asking the twins and everyone to recite the Lord’s Prayer is bc they believed that someone who made a deal with the devil was unable to recite it. It was pretty much their “fool proof” method of deciding wether or not you were a witch.
Such an amazing film! It takes the puritanical fears of nature and women seriously. You have to understand the religious worldview of that time which is why it’s a disconnect for a lot of folks. They got banished because the family were too puritanical for even the puritans of the plantation
This is incredible. Best horror movie since The Shining for me. The Witch is about how women were treated under a Puritan Christian society, where every other woman was blamed as a Witch by their own family. Persecution will turn people into the villain they say you are. The Satanic temple endorsed this movie and they put it perfectly: "It’s a criticism of a theocratic patriarchal society and a fair representation of the stresses that puts on a community."

The first 4 are pretty straightforward, and I agree that both twins fall pretty neatly into the category of Sloth, but ehhh, I dunno, saying Mercy represents Wrath and Samuel Gluttony feels kinda like you're working backwards from your conclusion and trying to shoehorn them into those categories without any real evidence to back them up.
I don’t think I actually know what I just watched lol. The mother was definitely pissing me off lol. I don’t know a whole lot about that time period and don’t know anything about witches and witchcraft. But always enjoy watch alongs with you guys!!
This is one of my favorite films by A24. I took a History of Witchcraft and the Salem Witch Trials in college, so I understood all the various layers in this film.

Outside witches (in the sense of this film), it’s a brilliant account of actual Puritan beliefs in the 16 hundreds. It’s a brilliant film, building characters, and tension.
The director really tried to capture an accurate representation of what it would’ve felt like back then. The paranoia of not knowing who the witch is. The extreme religious beliefs. How women were treated. And as far as the witch craft, it’s pretty accurate. Rob Eggers really loves to do his research. It’s part of the process of coming up with his ideas for movies. Just learning
This was the first horror movie that made me so disturbed and it is my favorite, the mix between horror and the time period just makes it so creepy, Anya did incredible and everyone else (heard the goat was an ass on set 😂)
I love this movie. It´s is one of my favorites ever. It's not an easy movie (like all Robert Egeers movies). It gets you in its unusual way to tell the story. There is no music, only a creepy sound or the witches voice. It explores the psychological horror and the infamous radicalism of the religion and the dark age of Christianity beliefs . A curiosity about the movie is that everything in the scenes was made using the same tools they used back then. That is the way Robert Eggers make his movies.
Hey guyss, you should watch "Society of the snow" it is a film by the same director as "the impossible" and it is based on real events, it is absolutly incredible. it is nominated for the oscars as best foreign film.

I really, really enjoyed and appreciated this movie. Theaters made it unusually involving, and my time studying that time period made it even more interesting.
The rabbit is rhw witch's familiar. The baby was killed, sacrified and made into a poultice, but Im sure she ate the baby poultice. Im not sure why the rest of the kids were sacrificed, either. Sucks blsck Phillip did that. The kids giggling at him tho 😂🤭
Also she really had no other choice. How was a young girl all by herself in the 1600’s going to survive? There’s no way she could work the land on her own or not be attacked by an animal or even sexually assaulted from a man. I guess that is an option but not one I’d choose.

The movie is very open to interpretation. There is no real answer as to what was the point. It’s one of those make what you can of it movies. To me Anya’s character was like you said gaslit and pushed towards becoming a witch. The devil used the witch to plague this family. Which caused the family to turn on one another and caused Anya’s character to resort to going to the devil for answers which he uses an opportunity to make her a witch and serve him.

It is filled with suspense, dread and dissonance with some surprisingly beautiful and almost gothic/hauntingly atmospheric parts. The score is also very minimum in its approach.
Its just strings (the cello and nyckelharpa in particular), a hurdy-gurdy, waterphones, percussions and female choirs. The choirs almost always sends a chill down my spine!

This and The Babadook and Midsommar helped generate what has been a golden age in horror, which in the past was very hit and miss and polluted with slasher BS films did little to generate any sense of dread or true menace. Looking forward to director Robert Eggers's adaptation of Nosferatu.
These are old-school Protestants, but they still held some remnants of Catholic theology. As a Catholic, we pray for the souls of unbaptized babies because we believe baptism to be salvific. Without baptism one can't enter heaven because baptism is what cleanses us of original sin. However, because children that die before a certain age are incapable of sin (except original sin, which we're all born with), we pray for God's mercy that He will accept those babies' souls. There are Biblical passages that make us hopeful of this, particularly in the book of Matthew: "But Jesus said, 'Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.'” Great reaction! This movie is terrifying!

My dad and I were going to watch it when it came out but the second it got the part with the baby getting ground up my dad wasn't having it. He turned it off and was pissed that a movie would even imply that that was happening to a baby. I watched it last year for the first time all the way through. I also sat in silence at the end lol

This was one of the movies that made me sit in silence for a few minutes after it ended 😅 I really enjoyed it though. When I first watched it, I got it confused with the Blair Witch documentary so I had no idea what I was getting into lmao
Eggers wanted the movie to be authentic to the period so all of the clothes, tools, housing, etc are copied from over 400 years old. Most admirable is the language, Old English, which the actors learned the dialogue in. That is very impressive!

Wow, didn’t expect a horror reaction in February. I love this movie. It is so cinematically beautiful, and the performances are outstanding.
They thought the baby wasn’t in heaven because they believed all people were born with Original Sin, which is only forgiven through Baptism.
There are some interesting interviews with Robert Eggers where he talks about writing and making this movie. Made me appreciate the movie even more.
I was literally just thinking that I hope y’all watch this, I love this movie and if I’m correct it was Anya Taylor Joys first movie. So good, and very period accurate. The stuff you see in the movie is actually what people of the time believed of witches, ie the bargain w the devil and the signing of his book, rubbing baby fat all over themselves to make them fly, appearing as animals aka familiars such as crows, rabbits, and ravens, the reason why they were asking the twins and everyone to recite the Lord’s Prayer is bc they believed that someone who made a deal with the devil was unable to recite it. It was pretty much their “fool proof” method of deciding wether or not you were a witch.
Such an amazing film! It takes the puritanical fears of nature and women seriously. You have to understand the religious worldview of that time which is why it’s a disconnect for a lot of folks. They got banished because the family were too puritanical for even the puritans of the plantation

This is incredible. Best horror movie since The Shining for me. The Witch is about how women were treated under a Puritan Christian society, where every other woman was blamed as a Witch by their own family. Persecution will turn people into the villain they say you are. The Satanic temple endorsed this movie and they put it perfectly: "It’s a criticism of a theocratic patriarchal society and a fair representation of the stresses that puts on a community."

The first 4 are pretty straightforward, and I agree that both twins fall pretty neatly into the category of Sloth, but ehhh, I dunno, saying Mercy represents Wrath and Samuel Gluttony feels kinda like you're working backwards from your conclusion and trying to shoehorn them into those categories without any real evidence to back them up.

This is one of my favorite films by A24. I took a History of Witchcraft and the Salem Witch Trials in college, so I understood all the various layers in this film.

Outside witches (in the sense of this film), it’s a brilliant account of actual Puritan beliefs in the 16 hundreds.
It’s a brilliant film, building characters, and tension.
The soundtrack as well is absolutely wild and overstimulating.
The director really tried to capture an accurate representation of what it would’ve felt like back then. The paranoia of not knowing who the witch is. The extreme religious beliefs. How women were treated. And as far as the witch craft, it’s pretty accurate. Rob Eggers really loves to do his research. It’s part of the process of coming up with his ideas for movies. Just learning

This was the first horror movie that made me so disturbed and it is my favorite, the mix between horror and the time period just makes it so creepy, Anya did incredible and everyone else (heard the goat was an ass on set 😂)
I love this movie. It´s is one of my favorites ever. It's not an easy movie (like all Robert Egeers movies). It gets you in its unusual way to tell the story. There is no music, only a creepy sound or the witches voice. It explores the psychological horror and the infamous radicalism of the religion and the dark age of Christianity beliefs . A curiosity about the movie is that everything in the scenes was made using the same tools they used back then. That is the way Robert Eggers make his movies.

The movie is very open to interpretation. There is no real answer as to what was the point. It’s one of those make what you can of it movies. To me Anya’s character was like you said gaslit and pushed towards becoming a witch. The devil used the witch to plague this family. Which caused the family to turn on one another and caused Anya’s character to resort to going to the devil for answers which he uses an opportunity to make her a witch and serve him.
