For me,... This is one of those songs. One of those "bad day" songs.
You know,.... Work sucked. Traffic sucked. Kid who cuts my grass quit halfway through. Dog pissed on dining table leg.... I just put this song on (reguardless of which version) and tale a scorching hot shower. Between the steam and the music I get lost in a blissful cloud. When the song ends, my pulse is back to normal. My shoulders relax, and now I'm focused on music instead of my crappy day.
Pink Floyd is far better than any shrink. Lol. At least that's how I feel....
Jason Hahn
I’m glad Floyd is able to do that for you my friend, many of their song work the same way for me, cheers! 😁
True story:
I heard a radio show, interviewing Gilmour and Waters, recorded and broadcast in the early 80s (UK's Thatcher era) ~ and in discussing this song (Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun) ~ they recounted a story, of a letter they received from the mother of a young man who died of cancer 😭
"He asked the Staff to play this song non-stop (tape loop?) in his last Day on Earth... and it eased his departure greatly."
(paraphrased)
~~~~~
That stunned me, and still does even now; I would do much the same
This is the only Floyd song that has all 5 members of the band on it, whilst written by Waters, there are 7 guitar parts which are done by both Syd Barrett and David Gilmour so this is the only song that has both Syd Barrett and the person who replaced him after he went mad.
This song has such a hypnotic rhythm, Nick Mason is so underrated.
Underappreciated ffs, he is recognized as one of the best drummers out there by those that do matter...
This song inspired British author Douglas Adams to reference the band in his book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", where "The loudest group of all times" destroys a spaceship by directing it into a star.
The group was called Disaster Area and its music was so loud that the fans would have to listen their gigs from a long distance.
Adams was a friend of band's guitarist David Gilmour.
420since1974
That’s insane, thanks for the backstory!!
AndyReacts one day you should read hitch hikers guide or watch the bbc series, its brilliant.but dont watch the movie its a dog.
Hot Black Desiato. 😎
@@andyandalex In the late 1970's, the first few episodes of Hitch Hikers Guide were re-recorded as a double LP album. In that version, there's a line that Arthur Dent has 'Ford, do you realise that robot can hum like pink Floyd?' referring to Marvin the android.
In 1994, Douglas Adams played guitar on stage in Earls Court with Pink Floyd on the Pulse tour. He was 42 at the time,a 'special' number for Hitch Hiker fans. In the original radio version, the characters steal a spaceship belonging to an alien admiral. But this was changed to a black, totally frictionless spaceship used as a stage prop by 'Disaster Area' (Floyd) to crash through a star, thus the reference to this song.
The 'Disaster Area' entry into the HHG is quite funny and no doubt is on RUclips somewhere. The Disaster Area ending of the episode is the one used in the 1981 BBC TV series.
Douglas Adams joined them on stage in the Pulse Earls Court gig as guest guitar. It was his 42nd birthday, an important number for HHG fans:)
the album cover is very trippy too.concentrate on it and you turn into syd.
@Cockney Red
Yeah, it’s wild.
This is probably my favorite on "Live at Pompeii. You'll enjoy it far more watching them play it live.
thx to you and continue to explore the differents pink floyd travels ! from france
Masterpiece of an Album from a Masterful Band. From my Acid tripping days. lol
wayne stumbo
😉🤪
Wayne best trip ever this music new a girlfriend making potent sunshine in statan island I made the mistake of growing old
I can relate to the acid tripping days... this album was my "introduction" to Pink Floyd while the window pane was blowing my mind. It was a perfect pair. :-)
Between this and "Timothy Leary's Dead" (Moody Blues), Sargeant Pepper and White Rabbit ~ was our 'launching pad' 1974~81... 😍
Great to see you enjoying this. The world would suck without Pink Floyd.
We are back with the next video for this series, I loved this live recording, let me know what you guys think below!
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe!
And most importantly, have a great weekend guys!
AndyReacts Hey Andy, if you love this track by Pink Floyd, listen to these, expand your world still further!!
Listen to White Noise, 'The Visitation'... 11 minutes long haunting track with gorgeous haunting Melody, late 60s obscure psychedelia, about a girl whose lover gets killed in a motorbike crash.. Great Melody.. And The piercing scream in the middle is just awesome..! Here it is, you can listen to a few seconds, then try it and do a reaction to all of it for real! :-
ruclips.net/video/MH9atqqkUuY/видео.html
Also, to kind of compliment that, try 'The Bed' by Lou Reed, a macabre tale of a guy whose lover cuts her wrists.. But sung in a very understated chilling way.. Here :-
One more.. 'The United States of America' (they were actually Russian commies, lol...) And 'The Garden of Earthly Delights'.. Awesome also late 60s electronic psych awesomeness! Here :
Thanks for the thoughtful comment I’ll have to look into it! 🔥😁
If I haven’t melted my brain too much I believe there is a video of this live. It was on PBS via BBC between 69-72. That is the closest I can pin it down. This was one of my first 10 albums I ever bought. When you open to the inside fold they have all the instruments and accessories laid out on what looks like an airport tarmac. It was vast.
I was just thinking of that center picture from when I had it on vinyl.
Set the Controls and Eugene? Wow! You guys are going for the deep tracks. This is what makes your channel stand out.
There are MANY German Kraut rock bands like this..... good luck going down that rabbit hole....
Tangerine Dream (ruclips.net/video/EhQpXD2Z9WQ/видео.html), Klaus Schulz (ruclips.net/video/C-ATeFGN2Ss/видео.html) to name but two.
Im excited for your reactions to all of this album, its so artistic!
Stanley2029
I know we’re only on the live half, we’re about to peek into the studio side pretty soon here!
AndyReacts if you ain’t familiar with avant-garde then the studio side will inform you accurately on what avant-garde is :p
Haha can’t wait!
This album like most Pink Floyd albums is best listened to on acid, shrooms, or peyote!🤯 Was there, did that!🤣🥴❤️
Dangeraous...lf you are not prepared...
This live version of the song contains a wide range of dynamics, including a white noise middle section. The song's title is from a book by Michael Moorcock entitled "Fireclown", also known as "The Winds of Limbo."
420since1974
That’s awesome! Thanks for the informative comment, I really liked the live version!
Thanks for that. I'm a fan of Moorcock and I did not know that. I know Moorcock is a fan of Pink Floyd but I didn't know about a connection the other way. Though I am aware that Moorcock was a part of the English psychedelic scene, writing and performing for Hawkwind and other bands, as well as making his own music.
And actually, the electronic section in this, 6:20 onwards, reminded me of a Hawkind track, Electronic No 1
ruclips.net/video/rOGqUuIshLk/видео.html
When I go on long road trips I definitely takes this album with me. It's so nice to listen to and chill while you're driving.
shane mccormick
Seems like it so far, excited to continue!
@@andyandalex also I found it virtually impossible to get road rage while listening to Pink Floyd
shane mccormick
My friend I have came to the exact same conclusion! 😁
This is the third "Ummagumma" video of yours I've watched an always a good experience. These live are excellent. Roger and Dave's vocals fit so well. Their guitar and bass are top notch, Rick's keyboards do such an amazing job of setting the moods, and Nick's drumming is practically an Olympic event. Just great stuff.
thegalaxybeing
Oh for sure, these live performances were just fantastic, can’t wait to get into the studio section of the album with you guys, I’m glad you enjoy the videos! 😁🔥
What makes this song truly unique is that its the only song that has all 5 members playing on it. Several of the guitar bits are played by both Syd Barrett and David Gilmour on this song.
Best version! The big build up is perfectly executed. Also the keyboards are right on.
Sets the mind on a journey man.
This has a mystic, almost middle-eastern, dessert like atmosphere. It certainly paved the way towards more ambient sounds that Got into from Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and Steve Roach.
This was my favourite track on the live album.
Did you know "Ummagumma" is or was slang for sex?
The album's title supposedly comes from Cambridge slang for sex,[7][8] commonly used by Pink Floyd friend and occasional roadie, Iain "Emo" Moore, who would say "I'm going back to the house for some ummagumma". According to Moore, he made up the term himself
@Jim O
Wow!!!!!! Thanks for that!!
I agree with the review on allmusicDOTcom : the four live numbers "...are all superior here to their studio originals, done longer, louder, and harder, with a real edge to the playing."
vania1917
Yeah these live recordings were literally phenomenal, love it!
Andy, the guy who recommended the Pixies was spot on. Give them a listen. They were cutting edge even when there was a lot of cutting edge going on.
this, along with "1983...merman" by Hendrix ... represents pinnacles in psychedelic music.
I have never seen a reaction to the version from 'Live at Pompeii' (maybe it gets blocked for some reason). Not only is it the most atmospheric, IMHO, but you also get to see both Nick and Rick being achingly awesome in close up, for once!
Thishappybreed Floyd management took the last full length Pompeii video down. Copyright I think.
@@howardchambers3163 'Set the Controls...' is still there ruclips.net/video/8RbXIMZmVv8/видео.html
@@howardchambers3163 Hah, besides the 4 guys themselves (R.i.P. Ricky Wright, you grandmaster genius)the "real" Floyd management died with Steve O' Rourke who was Floyds manager from 68 until his death in 2003.
Wonderful meaningful comments
You can´t stand up listening this fantastic music!
Saw Floyd in '72 then again in the '80s without Roger Waters then saw Roger Waters on the "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" tour!😲 All those shows were incredible!😁 Also went to several Pink Floyd laser light shows in Austin 🇨🇱! Been a fan for around 50 years now!😂 Their music is timeless...⏳🕰️⏰
It must also be noted that Pink Floyd was influenced by electronic/jazz pioneer Sun Ra, who influenced a whole generation of musicians to take up the keyboards and experiment.
Check him out, from 1957:
Good song, one of the best !
You probably will love 2 songs of David Bowie : a small plot of land & The Motel
Try it please !
Subbed. Time to pop your led zeppelin cherry...
In My Time of Dying
Frankly Frank
Thanks for subbing! And I’ve heard a couple of Zeppelin tracks but not the one you suggested, I’ll have to figure out how I want to approach bands like Zeppelin on here because they are super hard on copy right for some reason! Thanks for the suggestion and interest! 🔥😁
AndyReacts im pretty sure some of the bigger guys get away with it somehow
Stanley2029
I think the way I’ve seen people do it is literally pausing every like 15-20 seconds, but that’s no way to experience a song for the first time...it would be hurting my experience to where I wouldn’t be able to fully get into it. I’ll figure something out though!!
AndyReacts yeah constantly interrupting the song stops copyright strikes and that
Stanley2029
For sure but if it’s my first time, I personally want to get the most out of the song, but what I may do, is setting it up like a normal reaction video, but you guys won’t hear the music, and I’ll speed up that section by like 5x so you can see my facial expressions but it’ll go quicker. And the second the song ends, audio comes back on and I talk about the song, lyrics, etc. so that you guys will be able to get my genuine reaction. But I know you guys love hearing the song with me, so that’s just a thought. Not sure yet.
Looking forward to The Narrow Way parts 2 and 3
tonickton
It’s coming! And I’m going to combine any songs with parts into 1 video I think! 😁🔥
remember..no computers here at all...it's all real instruments, technique and analogue effects. oh..and 4 track recording.
metafis
And that makes it even more mind boggling! 😁🔥
Yea, but they had the Binson Echorec, spring reverb units and wah pedals. Also, would you consider the Farfisa organ a "real instrument"? It's basically a not fancy synth with just presets. 4 track was still used back then, but by Atom Heart Mother they already started using 8 track and by Meddle 16 track.
just wanted to say i requested a Sabbath song a while back and put in a url for it if i shouldn't do that please forgive me, thanks. i don't know all of the protocols for requesting songs.💚
albertzappa
Oh no you’re fine! 😁. I plan to go through most of the Sabbath studio albums and also some live performances so you’re all good my friend! 😁
Makes me think of the nuclear waste problem. Check out “Gum Arabic” by east of eden. A very underrated band.
How to pronounce "Ummagumma" = ruclips.net/video/ahN8ealurLQ/видео.html
Close them eyes and keep them shut
Robert Worth
I already pre recording all these ones for Ummagumma! And I can’t always have my eyes shut for all the tracks haha.
@@andyandalex Try it once...don't open your eyes and you will get deeper into the music.
Robert Worth
I understand, I’ve listened to the whole DSOTM album laying in my bed with my eyes closed, was enlightening!
What bands are you listening to on your own? Any genre you don't like? Makes it easier to request something.
J.
I currently listen to a decent amount of Floyd, the Beatles, Sabbath, sublime, some guns and roses, Depeche Mode, stuff like that! 😁
AndyReacts in no way like depeche mode, but not unlike beatles, floyd, sabbath, and on the way to grunge is The Pixies.if you like the pixies then try the stranglers. The pixies are one of kurt cobains big influences. Think of them as the twisted beatles.
dość wolny
Interesting! Thanks! 🔥😁
I'd also recommend The Stranglers 😁
@@AH-wm3ri Stranglers?Typo
You've been perusing the cover art - I wonder, did you figure out the hidden symbolism in that "roadies and instruments" picture without looking it up (?!)
This version is of course a classic example of the way hardcore fans came to remember Set The Controls... - with the big crescendo and the tremulous keyboard cadenza that follows.
Even better versions exist (Pompeii, the KQED TV show, and - to name one ROIO at random - Sheffield '69 [even with the tape-speed issues]).
People who suggest the Pixies are right there with you. I'd add Joy Division if you want to get out there. Joy Division is the cream of the crop among those who were around at the time. Sadly their time was cut short.
Aah.. you should've gone for the: "Pink Floyd - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun - Live At Pompeii". This version sounds kinda broken in a way and out of pace somehow, and like half the sound is missing and cloudy/muddy. Guess this is just another version, but still.. go for the Live at Pompeii, you won't be disappointed! On a completely different level imo.
Po chuj on tak kiwa tym kaczanem?
wow two n a half yrs ago, did you and or andy graduate yet? you thought of a good way to spend your time doing what you obviously dig when you may have curtailed other interest do to ccp- virus.
I'd really like to see your reaction to the album "Pawn Hearts" by Van der Graaf Generator (who are in my opinion better than Pink Floyd).
