You know that if you're going to play early Pink Floyd material, I'm going to be here.
Roger Waters based this song on a poem, but I can't remember who the author of the poem was.
This was featured on their second album, "A Saucerfull of Secrets", which was the first to feature David Gilmour as lead guitarist.

I saw this performed at Wembley Arena in London and he managed to light a circle of flame around the rim of the great gong, which somehow died away as the music faded. it was unforgettable, and remains my favourite Pink Floyd piece. The 'Satan' you mentioned by the way, is not that, but is the face of the Medusa, from Greek-Roman myth, and its head has been cut off by the warrior Perseus, who is holding it up, with his shield on the other arm. He does not look at that face, or he will be turned to stone! So he pops it into a bag and covers it quickly and uses it to defeat some other monster later.

Pink Floyd changed my view of music way back in 1973 when I heard Dark Side Of The Moon for the first time. Until then I had only heard AM radio top 40. When David Gilmour played his solo in Time I was hooked! They played this concert, w/o people, in the ruins of Pompeii, that was destroyed by a volcano. The entire concert is amazing! Another great earlier song, that has everything, except lyrics, is Atom Heart Mother Suite!

Good Lord! The perfection of this video (at the time it was made) is simply stunning! And you're right Kali, the drumming captures the magnitude of the pictures they are showing. In point of fact, there is a good video of a Syd Barrett led Pink Floyd performing this song at some venue several years prior.

Used to see them regularly in the late sixties in London. They played at middle earth and various colleges. Favorite was the Crystal Palace garden party in 71 I think. They played Echoes for the first time and I seem to remember a thunderstorm. I think Mountain also played. Check out the garden party site for recordings and photos . There is a lake in front of the stage which had inflatables hidden. A lot of people ended up in the lake. Also first time hearing Its all too much by the beatles. Totally fitting for the occasion

Pompeii was an Italian city that was covered by ashes and lava from an eruption of the vulcano Vesuvius in the year 79. At the end of the 16th century remains of the city were discovered. Pompeii is on the Lists of World Heritage Sites.

The excavation of Pompeii (and Herculaneum, which suffered the same fate) was a pivotal time in European culture. The discoveries were followed closely and kickstarted the Neo-Classical period in Art and Architecture which dominated European culture until about the middle of the 19th century. Herculaneum and Pompeii are of the utmost importance in the cultural development of the West.

With this song, I always think of Rush's "Cygnus X-1" from "A Farewell to Kings" which is a prelude to the album "Hemispheres." In fact, I heard the latter before ever hearing Pink Floyd's early material. However, I like to imagine a link. A hand-off from one Prog band to another.

Although this was included in the Live in Pompeii film this here was actually filmed/recorded on a soundstage in France and then added to the Pompeii film. One of the clues is all the studio lights behind the them here. At Pompeii they did not have all those lighting rigs nor the extra a/c power to spare that they would have required.

Hola hermosa - Yeah that's a wild and hypnotic ride. The drum beats from Nick Mason are trance like and tribal - of course you picked up on that and the music and melody has a heavy middle eastern influence. If you like this one you might also like 2000 Light Years from home by the Rolling Stones. It isn't as epic a composition as this piece but it is a good example of psychedelic / space rock. Hope you and the fam are all doing well. Been catching up on your videos but haven't had the chance to leave a comment in a while. Much love

This is Syd Barret's Pink Floyd.Syd was a singular personality in the 67 scene in London. He embodied the sound of this because his goal in life seemed to be to go beyond mundane reality in his imagination, with the help of psychedelic drugs. He did just this and went down the rabbit hole with Alice, that is flipped out.he could not function after that and had to leave the band.Comfortably Numb and shine on you crazy diamond were both about him.

I really respect the early Roger Waters/Syd Barrett work of Pink Floyd but it can get a little too far "ou there" for me haha. When David Gilmour joined, to kinda take over for Syd who was no longer functional on stage because of his LSD and mental issues, the potential was incredible. But, Syd continued to slide and it became a sad story for him. Roger Waters was afraid to fly, which was mentioned in the lyrics of many Pink Floyd songs, along with losing his father in the war (loss and war being major topics of his lyrics throughout the years, which got to a point where it annoyed the other band members). The Pink Floyd story is VERY interesting. There is an 80 minute documentary that sums of the issues/story-line really well. RUclips link is: ruclips.net/video/HxCFla0bXlg/видео.html

They use Pompeii as the backdrop, people who were covered in lava and the murals; Roman gods were of course the Greek gods with a different name. But it sounds middle-eastern to me too, so Cleopatra was not that far of I think. Would also be a good nickname for you: Cleopatra.
