As a game dev I love this series because I can learn some tips and tricks to make work simpler: not everything has to work exactly like it does in the real world, some trickery to sell the experience and make life easier for the dev goes a long way. A couple things I could maybe weigh in on: - Creatures like bats being high poly: Could be for the simple reason that they're outsourced models that the maker didn't know how much detail is exactly needed, so they just made them like that just in case :D - The blackbox_item, blackbox_event, etc.: In some game engines like Unity and Unreal, and RE engine is most likely the same, we place some dummy objects in the scene/level to load data and have it quickly accessible, but we don't want to attach them to a character or something in the game world itself. blackbox_item is probably where data for items and pickups in a particular scene are stored. They may have info like whether the player picked up a particular item or not (like a key) in order to let them progress. blackbox_event is for, well, special events in the game. Again to possibly store info like "has the player made it past cutscene/location X, Y, Z. - The double face under the welding mask, and the dev texture in the mine cart - castle scene: I think these are just goofs 😄. Devs and modellers are people, and people make mistakes when there's a lot to do sometimes. Probably the modeller duplicated the face by mistake and never realised it, and the face is hidden behind a mask so nobody really noticed! Same for the checkerboard texture; left overs from grey-boxing (drafting) the scene which were covered up by the final rock assets and well, devs forgot to remove the original before release!

also the lip synching in the og re 4 looks better than this shit, and the expressions feature in the game is dumbed down and its not just leon's new personality, just see the cutscenes its just mouth open/close
@hallucy that's not higher resolution textures dummy, they sacrifice polygon count for models so the game runs more smoothly when they are not needed. The old game couldn't have high amount of polygons because of the console limitations and the textures where lower res because of the constraints of disk space as well.
I know Capcom is way more chill than Nintendo but I still fear that one of these videos is gonna get the same treatment as the animal Crossing new horizons video
@@zondor8123 When you buy a game you don't own the rights to it, but you can do whatever you want with your copy as long as you don't share ways to mod it, and that's the part japan doesn't seem to or want to understand.
The fact that the pause screens actually take a screenshot of the gameplay and then teleport under the map explains why sometimes after closing the attaché case, I’ve seen textures quickly pop in. It’s probably reloading everything. If that’s the way they chose to implement that, the pop in is probably not avoidable. I’ve seen some people say they should “fix” that but I don’t mind it.
Whether or not they can fix it would depend on if they can find a way to load the textures faster. I know when Zelda Breath of the Wild first released it had slower loading screens but they eventually figured out a way to optimize asset streaming to make it faster. Tears of the Kingdom apparently has an even better version of the new system (probably required the assets be stored differently than the original). I am kind of surprised they went the route of taking a screenshot, I'd think a modern console would be able to handle the extra models on screen (or just de-load some that are off screen). Maybe they were concerned about clipping.
It's crazy how even the low poly ganados still kind of look pretty good. And the level of detail in Hunnigan's room, despite 90% of it not ever even being seen onscreen! This game is amazing.
Stuff like the bats being very high detail for something so fast or in so few places is probably to do with the coming VR mode, but even there they'll be too fast to see clearly.
But zombie dogs are bigger and move slower yet they're low poly until they attack you... and bats are common real life creatures... like a lot of other animals you can find a model of in places like SketchFab... and just put it in your game... and don't bother to optimize...
24:56 - That type of Japanese writing is called "Romaji" (literally meaning Roman Characters) and it's a form of Japanese writing used to help non-native speakers pronounce the words along with some other uses i.e. navigation. My suspicions about why they used romaji for the paper was that it would be easier to write it out in Japanese than Spanish, and since most players would never get close enough to read it, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between English/Spanish/Romanized Japanese. I'm honestly just surprised that they kept the texture detailed enough that it could be read to begin with.
I love the attention to detail and the love that this shows, they didn't have to fully model every animal but they did, they didn't have to fully model the environment but they did, they didn't have to make it look so good but they did

I would love to see a mod that just makes RE4R low poly at all times. How cool would it be to have all the environments and enemies rendered in simplest form? It would feel like playing a really highly polished indie title.
You've definitely seen that picture before (5:06). It's Kensington Park and it was also used in RE: Village (It has even been featured on this channel)
Even Shinji Mikami, the director behind the original said he really enjoyed the remake, he also didn't wanted the story to be a 1:1 recreation, hoping it will be better than the original.
I hate how the "low poly, no one will really see this so don't bother much" models in this game are like, still really impressive to me. My mind still thinks graphics haven't changed much since 2012.
The model viewer's 360 background image is also used in RE8; the outside of Ethan and Mia's house at the beginning, I think? ... It was one of the other RE Boundary Break episodes it was in, anyways. EDIT: Also, Japanese words written by sound/in English is called Romaji!
I played the game at 2K like 2 feet from my monitor and never noticed any of the low poly models, either I'm blind or they handled them incredibly compared to most games. Must be why it runs so great on PC.
The 360 location in the model viewer is the Round Pond in Hyde Park, London. I guess one of the devs did a bit of sightseeing with their fancy 3D camera and used a holiday snap as the basis for the viewer
That skybox for the model viewer must be the "default" for the engine. I recall Devil May Cry 5 (which also uses the RE Engine) having that exact same skybox.

I really enjoy learning about the movie style tricks they do in video games, its so creative.
You know, while I was playing the game, there where multiple times were I was thinking of your channel. And here we are!
And they say that this is soulless.. This is just more proof that this was made with love and passion.
Who says this game is soulless? How could anybody make that claim with a straight face?
@@Brooksey1992 watch crowbcats video
Even Shinji Mikami, the director behind the original said he really enjoyed the remake, he also didn't wanted the story to be a 1:1 recreation, hoping it will be better than the original.
nobody said that
It actually is kinda soulless. The more I play it, the more it comes off as a cash grab
I hate how the "low poly, no one will really see this so don't bother much" models in this game are like, still really impressive to me.
My mind still thinks graphics haven't changed much since 2012.
Hearing Leon talking with his own voice instead of Loquendo's hits me in my childhood. 🤣
You Got THEE Leon S. Kennedy!? Also great video!
The model viewer's 360 background image is also used in RE8; the outside of Ethan and Mia's house at the beginning, I think?
... It was one of the other RE Boundary Break episodes it was in, anyways.
EDIT: Also, Japanese words written by sound/in English is called Romaji!
23:45 I heard birds chirping in the background. It's like a boundary break in a boundary break video, except with sound!
I played the game at 2K like 2 feet from my monitor and never noticed any of the low poly models, either I'm blind or they handled them incredibly compared to most games. Must be why it runs so great on PC.
23:45 do you have a cockatiel haha? Nice job again thanks!
When the engine's so dope the low poly models have more polygons than the ps1's entire catalogue of titles
Awesome you got Leon’s voice actor in on this! Thanks!
Ive been waiting for this video hell yeah thank you man!
The 360 location in the model viewer is the Round Pond in Hyde Park, London. I guess one of the devs did a bit of sightseeing with their fancy 3D camera and used a holiday snap as the basis for the viewer
3:06 That's Wesker alright! He doesn't need a chair to sit down! His leg muscles are so strong.
The attaché case is fully modeled because, if you’re cool and use gyro aiming, you can move the case around in the inventory menu.
Or mess around with the right stick, as I have done on accident (several times).
OMG THAT INTRO WAS EPIC ‼️‼️
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Shesez & Leon
YOO Leon in the intro is quite a banger way to start a video
5:42 -
🎶 They did the mash, the monster mash 🎶
24:58 It's called Romanji.
That skybox for the model viewer must be the "default" for the engine. I recall Devil May Cry 5 (which also uses the RE Engine) having that exact same skybox.
17:58 some guy also done the same in the og version. He move the camera under Leon’s Bieber hair and we can see the texture of “hidden baldness” underneath.
i think rooms being rendered beforehand has something to do with shader compilation
Ive never played Resident Evil but every video I see on the series interests me so darned much.😭
You should get into it, really fun solo player game
Play the remake for RE2 or 7, they're always on sale and I think they're great starting points
@@Arcademan09 I was actually going to probably play og RE2 first tbh, it seems interesting and cool
Ill make sure to check those out too though
@@starbutter2730 go for it, the N64 is a weird but impressive port, it has bonus costumes unique to that version
The black box in Mendez fight looks like a spawn position for his upper body after stage 2 cutscene
Pour one out for Mike.
-He knew a good bar.
Bro I watched the beginning of the video without sound and I dead ass thought the picture of him was a memorial photo
Another detail in the room Hannigan is in is there a few bottles with Imbrella logos in them.
22:57 so those are for the future Moushley dlc
Got some nice cheese on sale, stranger
Whoa, I was just thinking earlier about how I was looking forward to this! Fantastic timing.
Hey shezes loved the video the one thing you missed in the hunigan room is that there are vials for either cure or samples of the t virus with the umbrella logo on them on the 4th desk!
You are such a chill host! Best episode of boundary break ever!!!!
Thats very cool that you got Nick to do the intro as Leon.
24:50 Here is a bit of what it would look like in Japanese.
この爆弾を使う時は必ず確認すること!
And after that:
大爆発して大ダメージを受けます
〜をつけよう(can’t make out the first half)
丁寧に扱ったら爆発しないよ
yo Leon voicing is awesome
I've always enjoyed stuff like this. Seeing how the game works is quite interesting
