- Have you heard of the hack for basting your quilt sandwich by using a pool noodle?! Apparently, it makes the process go quicker, alleviates back pain and awkward crouching, and makes basting slightly more enjoyable.
But...is this actually true? In this short video, I find out with you in real-time as I use pool noodles for the first time to sandwich my quilt together!
Have you used this method? If so, what do you think of it? If not, what's your favorite basting method?

I love how you made this "real"... thanks ...
I am 50 years old and have trouble pinning a big quilt & that is why i stopped quilting. Now, watching this I will start to quilt again. Thank you so much. I really don't know why i never thought about this either. That looks really easy to do....
I'm so glad this inspired you to begin quilting again!!
You can also spray your backing. Like with 505 spray adhesive. ❤
Hi Frances, how's your day going with you?
Thanks for this. I am so glad you didn’t edit out the mistake lol
Good job!
Last year, I purchased the pool noodles but haven't tried it yet. Thanks for sharing this method.
Always love watching your videos. This is a great tip, didn't know about it until now, thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much for this video, it totally makes sense, I saw another video but it was confusing. You have very clear instructions!
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Good job! I will definitely try this method.
Let us know how it goes!
Love your idea on using Pool Noodles and it's definetly faster than pinning for sure.
However, take your idea another step further, "DO NOT USE Spray Adhesive", but use ELMER'S Washable No-Run School Glue instead. Go through the same process of getting the materials onto the Pool Noodles and the rolling out process of beginning to spray, but don't spray. Where yoou pinned, just use Elmer's glue instead.
But now the fun part starts, once it is partly rolled out, take a bottle of Elmer's Glue and on the first layer, squirt a thin line of glue from one emd to the other end on the layer. Just go back & fourth & form a continous line with about 6 inches apart to cover the area which is exposed.A thin of glue is all that is needed, no big, huge line of is glue needed.
Then take second layer and cover the first layer and gently smooth it out with your hands. Repeat with the Elmer's glue again on top.
Now take the final layer and lay it on top of the freshly glued on second layer. Again, gently smooth out this layer with your hands.
Next pull down the next area to be basted and repeat these steps until finished basting it all.
The glue will dry in about 30 minutes and the glue will not gum up the needle on the sewing machine. No mess, no fumes, no doors and windows opened for airing out the fumes & no odors, yeah...
Thank you so much for this video! I am definitely going to get some pool noodles and try this! 😊
We'd love to know how it goes!
Sharon Shamber uses one by fours that hold the layers so much tighter. Sorry I'm going to stick to the wood instead of floppy pool noodles. Still not as stiff as wood with PVC pipe inside noodles.
Thank you for this! I can't get down on the floor anymore...well, I can, but I can't get back up (knee replacement). 😅
I hope this helps!!
Hi Debbie, how's your day going with you?
This title sounds like a food recipe, lol! But I love layering and basting my quilts with pool noodles. I have a bad leg, so crawling on the ground is not fun!😊
Haha, the food terms in the quilting world are my favorite!
I would love a video on how to use this technique for king size quilts?
This is a great suggestion!
If you use quilt basting pins you shouldn’t have to slip your hand underneath your quilt layers.
I dont have a table long enough and theres where i run into trouble. I do queen size primarily. I have no room for a bigger table. Very small apartment. Any suggestions??
Yes! Try basting your quilt on the wall with some painter's tape. Of course, you'll need the wall space. Tape your backing to the wall first, smooth it out, and then repeat the process with the other layers. When I do this method, I like to baste each layer with 505. Just be sure not to use so much that it saturates your backing and gets on your wall!
