How To Make A Defensive Tactic in FM24

  • In the last tactic video, we talked about how to make a simple, basic tactic. Well in this video, we're going to talk about how you can make a defensive tactic in football manager 24, focused on stopping the opponent.
    Some of the things include creating your defensive strategy, how to set up your team, a solid defensive formation, and what players roles you can use for a defensive tactic.
    And after all that, we watch a match (a tough home match at that!) and go through the tactical instructions you can use to try and stop the opponent.

    What I like most about this man's videos is the fact that he's not looking for exploits to turn the game engine around. Explains the reasoning in a simple and easy to understand way. Most FM content creators simply use the same formations over and over again , always with the same instructions and exploits. keep up the good work!

    • @spinyslasher6586

      Agreed. People need to understand why certain roles and instructions work and why others don't.

      thank you!! I like to show my process, that way it's easy for you guys to change/adjust to your own way to play as you go along. Plus, for better or worse, talking about the result at the end of the match to show that you could still lose even if you do everything right 😂😂

      @@spinyslasher6586 this is why I like doing the player role videos along side these. So there will always be a reference that you can refer back to (although funny enough, I don't think I've done one role that was used in this formation 🥶🥶😆😆

      Honestly the biggest difference in my eyes is that you say and you can see, that you actually watch the full game highlights. Most channels is see pass by focus on full seasons stats and how to max results. While I personally really appreciate, qualitative analysis and in depth approach!
      Everyone knows that there are certain exploits that really work well in the match engine. But as someone who appreciates the actual tactics and adjustments aspects, I gotta say that I take more joy out of preparing a plan for each game, over slapping in a 4-2-3-1 gegenpress and racing to x amounts of trophies.
      However no way I’m going under comprehensive highlights… You’re a mad man watching the full game sims 😂😂

    Awesome video.
    The hardest thing I've found is to not deviate from the plan when you go behind. When you're the underdog, you can try to get the best advantage possible, but sometimes it just won't come off. Sometimes you will lose 1-0 like in this example. Sometimes you'll take the lead, get very close to an upset, but then they get the equaliser later on, and it's still impressive, but not as amazing as winning. But being the weaker team, that can happen sometimes.
    The biggest mistake would be to go more attacking as soon as you go behind, when the game plan is working OK, you just came behind because the opposition are better quality. When I do that, I tend to just "run into the knives" and go down 2-0 or 3-0 very quickly. I have to remind myself to trust the plan, and the 1-1 may yet come if we remain patient. Although sometimes it can pay off to go balls-to-the-wall in the 80th minute when they are tired and you have reserves. It's very fun when you pull it off, but it's not going to happen reliably.
    I'm curious how one would go about this when actually being a pretty strong team (mid-table, sub-top or better) but playing cautiously to get results. I.e. be Southgate or Deschamps and bore everyone to death, but still get the results. Not how I would like to play per se, but could be interesting especially in tournament football.

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  Месяц назад

      It's an intersting idea, especially when you approach it during the actual match. For example, in this video, Arsenal scored because of a mistake from my player and/or a great player from their own. I'd be curious how I would've adjusted (even for the sake of the video lol) if Arsenal was hitting those long balls over the top and getting chance after chance; or if the tactic just wasn't working and they were getting whatever they wanted.
      I actually was thinking about it on the attacking end though; because my forwards were missing a lot of pretty good chances that I couldn't really afford to miss. Do I change them to something else, in hopes that a role change or substiution can get us a goal? Or do I keep doing the same thing, because it is technically working, they're just not converting?

    • @saoirsedeltufo7436
      @saoirsedeltufo7436 Месяц назад +2

      I played an Arsenal team (as Ajax) that was much stronger than mine and both of us played cautiously! It worked in my favour, I was hoping for a draw anyway, they created basically nothing and I managed an incredibly scrappy set piece goal to win 1-0. I felt if they'd attacked they probably would have beaten me!

    Results like this 0-1 against worldclass teams is what I call "builders". It builts the team in the save. You are doing so much better in these games than beating a lower division team 3-0 in a cup game. It gives the team a lift in all ways there is in the game. Develops players and team. Very important important getting these results. Brilliant stuff!

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  Месяц назад +1

      Totally agree! I kinda alluded to it in the video, but that's all you can ask for from your team. Did we give ourselves a chance to beat a top class team? And we did I think! We lost sure, but we lost because of a play we see all the time in football, not because they were a top class team and we're supposed to be relegated and got pushed around. Matches like this are the reason I love playing FM

      There's so much variance in the match when playing like that, which I love... like in this match, played well for the entire 1st half and yet we give up a goal. But Arsenal also missed two basically point blank chances, but we missed some too. That match could've been 3-0 to them, or 2-1 to us, whatever. Makes every match exciting and unexpected. And we see that when we watch footbal irl, so to see it replicated in FM is really rewarding

    Great video. A solution I found for the problem of long balls was to put the goalkeeper in the role of a sweeper-keeper on attack duty. This way, he stays more advanced, sometimes even outside the area, and can try to clear the ball. The issue is his speed, decision and anticipation.

    Another great tactical video, however just my opinion would not put pressing on the highest notch against Arsenal. Would invite them more on your own half to have more space to counter Into. Now it's more a lower gegenpress tactic.
    For a defensive tactic in my mind its more holding shape don't press that often and make sure to have numerical advantage in midfield and defensive against opponents.
    This is a more towards a balanced tactic as you are playing at home makes sense.

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  Месяц назад

      Totally fair counter point(s). I liked our threats going forward for the most part; at least in a match like that the fact we were providing any threat was fine with me lol. As for the press, since you mention it, it is like a gegenpress but lower. I hadn't really thought about it like that and, in fairness, my thought process (that hopefully came across in the video) was more "I don't want them to have time on the ball so they can carve us up" rather than "let's use a gegenpress" even if the result/instructions are the same

    • @akkermanrik
      @akkermanrik Месяц назад

      @@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Yes it works right, you play at home so it's a good tactical choice to press the opponent to have less time on the ball. But it's not defensive in my perspective if you go defensive you go with 2 VC against 1 SC 3 against 2 SC and have at least 1 VMC hold shape and counter and press left often. The only thing I am curious about now here with the counter-press is if you had to go still all notches to the right? I only do that when I really need to secure a goal curious how 4 notches would have impacted the match. For the rest, a lot of good points are well explained in a great style for players to learn from as always class ❤

      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  Месяц назад +1

      @@akkermanrik Hmmm, that'd be an intersting test to try with the counter press/lower notches versus what I did. For regroup, I liked the idea that if we lose the ball on a direct pass or something up the field towards their goal, that the players get back in their shape rather than chasing the ball and leaving gaps.
      And thanks for the discussion by the way 👍. I always try to frame my video/tactic stuff in a way that you can at least see the reasoning behind what I do, even if it may not something you agree with/would do yourself

    hey great video, I would like to make a suggestion since we are talking about defensive tactics, one thing that i never quite understood how to utilize is pressing traps or pressing in general, the combination line of engagment and defensive line + the trigger pressing Opposition instruction, how could i understand what is the best approach to this, is it depending on my players or depends on the opponent, if this is a deep enough topic to cover in a video or just a reply :)

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  Месяц назад +1

      that's an awesome suggestion, it'd probably make for a really good video so maybe I can do something on it!! In the short term, you could really change it for each team that you come up against. As a rudimentary example, in this video I play a high defensive line, but what if I was playing Leicester? Someone like Jamie Vardy would thrive on getting in behind high defensive lines so that may not be the best strategy (or he did at least back in the day haha). So don't feel like you have to keep your tactic the same exact thing for every match, feel free to adjust from match to match, and even while the match is going on.

    Possible to start going over specific tactics like the 4-4-2? I know you use it here but if you went over more generic things such as goal scoring options, differences with shorter vs more direct passing, how to hold a lead/chase a lead etc during the courses of a match, I think that’d be incredible!

    Ur example shows, in my opinion, the biggest mistake most of players do when they wonna play more defensive/underdog style because, in the end, football is a game of scoring goals. So the first question at creating a tactic should be how does my defense lead to goals because even if u concede 0 goals over an entire season u propably end up in the relegation zone if u also score 0 goals.
    My best, or at least, most successfull tactic so far was with my FC Augsburg save. I was playing a 4-2-4 that relied heavy on gegenpressing and relentless attacks. typical Jürgen Klopp heavy metal football. Even though i scored a lot i also conceded nearly as much so in the following season i replaced one striker with a halfback and made a 4-3-3 out of it that, in posession became a 3-2-5. to further boost my defense i stopped forcing counters and lowered the tempo. So my "defense tactic" was to never let the opponent have the ball. in the end i won the Bundesliga and the cup with a record of 13 clean sheets in a row and 22 clean sheets in total.

      I love the idea of defensive strategies not strictly about you're team being defensive; it's about creating a strategy to not let the opponent score, whatever that may be. This is starting to blur the lines into the philsophical aspect of tactics (which i love btw lol) but I would consider your tactic defensive as well. Since the argument could be made that possessing the ball is the greatest form of defense (since the opponent cannot score that way)

    Personally I am a fan of the regroup instruction and low press, but while I did like your video, I can't help but notice that a low block and playing cautious, while playing a high line, is as defensive as it gets. It makes me wonder, if you would be able to make the defensive or even the very defensive instructions work. I think the Match engine is simply not capable of making a Catenaccio or park the bus tactic viable and I tried hard. Would be interesting to see, if you could pull it off.

      man these are all great points/counter points! I guess my thought process was trying to play defensive while still offering something going forward (but I geuss at that point, it's like are you playing defensive or are you playing a counter?). But anyway, I thought the instructions offered a nice middle ground to what I was trying to do. That was probably more than you wanted haha, but thanks for the discussion!

    Everything is adaptable, but how could you have this nicely done without wingers? I thought of a 3-5-2 since my fullbacks can play there but then I think it would leave a not good amount of cover on the wings, is there a good alternative?

    • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
      @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker  11 дней назад

      That's a good question; what I've been working with recently is the "trap inside" team instruction. That tells your team to funnel the opposition into the cental areas as they're building up possession.
      So with your 352, the wingbacks will stay wide and force the ball into the center of the field, which is good since that's where the strength of your formation is. Your weakness is out on the flanks, so limit the time you give the opponent out there. That may be a nice workaround instead of having traditional wingers like in a 442.
      Of course, that's all theorertical haha but it may give you a starting point. Hope that helps! And thanks for the question!
