Half back in back 3 setup is amazing because you can use the wide center backs to involve more in the buildup if they are good on the ball In my 3-2-4-1 I use double pivots of half back and DLP so that my wide center backs can move forward in possession
Since I'm not trusting wingers for some reason, I like tactics without them. And halfback is my favourite DM role in these, allowing WBs to provide some rudimentary width in the offense. For me halfback fals into the category of central roles that help secure flanks, although it is less direct than carillero or mezzala.
This channel has been so good to watch. Watched almost every video. Would you do a video on the Raumdeuter / Thomas Muller role? Keep up the really good content!
Sir, what a great videos you created. You're the reason I started to create tactics on my own instead of just using others tactics. While it's creating headaches, I fell in love with FM once again. Just one question though, what do you recommend other complimentary DM roles if I used HB? I used 4231 with APs on the AMC by the way.
thank you so much :) I love that you're creating your own tactics!! you're definitely right that it can create a ton of headaches, but man it's so much fun when you get it right! For a complementary role, at the minimum I look for a role that can be played on Support. So the DLP or Regista if you're looking for a playmaker, the Segundo Volante if you want an attacker, and even a DM(S) can be really good with a HB
Are they playing higher up the pitch? I toyed with an idea of playing a Halfback in front of a Libero, for example, but decided it was unnecessarily complicated. Are you using two WCBs? That could be interesting. Still, I need to get rid of Zaniolo and my other elite wingers before I can add halfback to my tactics.
@@anders4442 My back line is WCB BPD WCB and his pivot partner is a SV. In possession he sits back and sprays passes and recycles like a DLP Def without being a ball magnet. If the ball carrier gets to the byline he will drift to the top of the box, but generally he just sits back in the DM. In defense he closes down like a BWM. To get this play type of play you need a BWM with good passing stats or a DLP with good defensive stats.
I have experimenter with a half back and a segundo volante. The wingback pushes up so HB takes his space. And on the other side the IWB goes to the center. So you have a nice 442 defensive shape with a really attacking offense. On the side of the IWB is a Winger in the CM line to provide an outlet on the wings and on the WB side you have an IF so the WB overlaps. That leaves you free to do interesting striker combinations
4-4-2 with good CWB and CF are quite busted. But the negative part is you'll be in trouble if the opponents won the midfield battle, which is much easier than on the wing-lane.
I play Zaire-Emery as a DLP-S in the DM strata. He is amazing at it, but when I am trying to see out a game I swap him to a HB-D, it really helps me see out the game but he still has the attributes to play like the FDJ role in your video.
I also like how the half back moves in those transitional phases; the centerbacks drop back, but the HB moves up to pressure the ball. Helps stop in momentum the opponent can get on a counter
Excellent Video 🔝🔝🔝 I have a recommendation about two legendary managers or let's say legendary tactics if you can explain more about them , Valeriy Lobanovskyi with Dynamo Kyiv 🇺🇦 and Otto Rehhagel tactic with Greece 🇬🇷, anyway it's just a suggestion coz I believe you have the ability to make things looks very simple and very easy to understand too .. thanks a lot and keep the good up 👏🏾👏🏾
Now that's a video suggestion!! I can't say I'm familiar with them, but as my friend says, "everyday's a school day". Need to research them and see what's out there. Any good recommendations for starting points?
Watching your videos made me learn a lot more about the game. You compared this role to the Libero which reminded me of a tactic I had in my first save, which is a 343 with a Libero and a Half Back on the same side. I don't think this combination is particularly good now but what do you think of it? Which other CB/DM would work great with the Half Back?
I probably wouldn't use them on the same side since they'd just be swapping with each other. But I think using these two in the same tactic but on opposite sides could provide some fun interchanges for the formation.
An extermly underrated role that makes a huge difference in how your team plays, i would like to make a suggestion (Attacking Midfielder) in the central attacking midfield area.
Awesome suggestion! What do you like to use for the winger roles? Inside Forward, Inverted Wingers, etc... And what about the striker? Advanced Forward?
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker to be honest i gave up using wingers, after all these years of playing the game i never understood how to make the wingers affective, inside forwards never get into scoring chances, inverted wingers never create chances or even dribble past anyone, even when i manage a team like tottenham i try to use Son as an Inside forward, still doesnt get in scoring positions, i have been playing for years and have tried so many tactics but i never understood how to use wingers as primary scorers or creators.. Strikers i use poachers more often because of your videos:), advanced forward and complete forward and pressing forward, i try to stay away from the other striker roles because it gets tricky to understand how they move with other roles that play around them.
^THIS! I adjust roles in the offense to fit the players, even when I make a substitution. Weirdly there was a season when the attacking quartet of 2 AFs and 2 AMs (su + at) yielded the best results. Sometimes simplicity works best. But that was after I was able to scout and develop (as much as the league allowed anyway) 6-7 young attacking talents. Funnily enough my by far highest transfers in that save were CB and GK.
Just wanted to share the love. There are some great videos out there on roles, but nothing quite with this presentation as well as such focus to specifc roles.
Thank you for making video about half back, I have been using it lately and need a depth description about this role. Im using it when using 433 againts team with 2 forward so when they counter the 2 forward have to face 3 CB. or when im using 31411 with 1CB 2WCB and no WB because my team lack depth in WB position
You're welcome! That's one of the tough things about FM; when you have a tactic idea or maybe a formation to try out and you just don't have the players/depth.
Superb video, I love the comparisons between similar player roles in the same position. On the scale showing the Halfback in between the Anchor and BWM (3:10), where would the DM role fit in? Would he be more or less aggressive at closing down than the halfback?
I would probably consider the DM straight in the middle, but it's also the role probably the most influenced by player attributes since it's a more "generic" role. For example, a player with an aggression of 20 would behave differently in how they tackle than one with aggression of 7
Would it be possible to make a video on the best player traits for each position? Also love your content it’s given me more information about roles in tactics than every before thanks 😊
I've been working on some stuff to show what player traits actually do! A deep dive on how they work, how the change your player, stuff like that. I wouldn't expect it soon, but hopefully in the (somewhat) near future. Thanks for the suggestion!
I think more than the anchor this is the one player role I positively will never use 😭😭 As nice as the defensive coverage is, the best he can contribute offensively being a hockey assist is too much of a caveat personally, but great video as always nonetheless!
Really need help with my 433 tactic it helps me win games however it’s very leaky in defence. Currently using a 433 2 full backs as attacking wing backs 2 centre backs one as a ball playing defender and a central defender. 1 defensive midfielder support a box to box midfielder and mezzala on attack. 2 inverted wingers support and either a pressing or advanced forward.
Hmm; my guess would be it's the two wingbacks on attack combined with your defensive midfielder on support. I think because you only have two players on the defend duty (your central defenders), along with two wingbacks attacking, you're probably being hit on the counter a lot. It's an easy fix; I would switch one of the wingbacks to support (or even a fullback on support if it still doesn't help), and then change the DM to defend. Should give your team a better defensive structure. Thanks for the question and hope that helps!
So as the example of Frenkie shows that player traits have more effect then instructions. Since HB has hard coded dribble less? One of frenkies key strenghts was to dribble out of situations beeing pressed and creating a lot of space and momentum dribbling passed his opponent pressuring him and progressing forward. I think that was one of the key aspects of his role and why barca bought him.
My interpretation is that the player will still exhibit their player traits in a role telling them not to, they just won't do it as much. So de Jong will still dribble (like we saw in the video), but he wouldn't do it as much as if he was in a role telling him to dribble more. Hope that makes sense!
I may do some type of video for role combos and formations, but probably not like an official "this role/combo is better than that one" type tier list On the other hand, I'll probably delve into some more complex tactical stuff as we continue on with the channel. And thanks for the suggestions!
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker that would be dope, your videos are great inspiration, not sure if there is any content creator that made me understand tactics like this
@@ilijaanastasijevic7507 love that the videos are helping! Out of curiosity, what kind of tactic stuff are you interested in? More formational stuff, opposition instructions, player roles, etc... I'm always looking for video ideas!
An issue with HB is that the player often drops too deep, giving up the DM area when defending, which could be problematic when HB is the only DM role in the formation. Sometimes its better to have another DM holding the area, especially when againsting strong IFs.
Very very true; You could see it in some of the highlights in these clips. That's why I liked the two inverted wingbacks holding that midfield area shown in the offset example
I believe they will try to avoid each other whe n switching if they can, and it's better if they're on opposite sides of each other. If you're feeling especially ambitious, I was messing around and you can use a half back with two liberos and get some really.... interesting poistional play!
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker oh that would be a big shape-shifting tactic! Would make sense together with two IFBs, if you have a short hb and two very defensive fb. I just got a libero wonderkid with 12 finish and 13 long shots at 18, I will try this out when he grows up
Do you think that pace will help a halfback a lot by essentially allowing them to quickly transition between in and out of possesion position, mitigating structural problems that may come during that period
I would say it couldn't hurt, that's for sure! But if you have a slow Half Back, strong mental attributes can make up for that (anticipation, decisions, etc..)
Does Half back works well with two wide centre back ? Would the system get him moving to the centre of both of the wide center back? Would he just fill up the right or left back slot only ? 😊
With this movement back to the back line; it’s more important to have two IWB to slot in the midfield to add stability and the actual midfield (volante) would then overload the attack?
In a back-3 system, the HB will be more like a defensivie midfield all the time, rather than dropping deep to take the play of the centerback. So think of it like a tame version of the segundo volante (in a back-3)
You don't necessarily need 2 IWB but the IWB makes sure you have coverage in that midfield area without necessarily needing to use one of your midfielders. I would start out with one IWB and see how you like it. You can always adjust your midfield roles too if you don't like using the IWB
how would it be applied on a 4-man back line. Basically replacing the anchor with hb; pairing it with the volante. Would double IWB with one on support and one on attack balance out the lost of midfield numbers
So I've got a guy playing as a half back. I'm trying to implement the changes you've shown to make him a playmaker half back like you've done with de Jong. Shoot less often and shorter passing are already selected for the role so no need to select them specifically again. Problem is that "takes more risks" is unavailable for the role and it can't be changed. I'm confused as to how you're doing this.
Hmm.. that's a new one! Out of curiosity, what kind of tactical instructions are you using? I wonder if it's some kind of combination instructions that's doing it. And is this a personalized role instruction for that player specifically? (for example: your tactic normally has an Anchor in that position, but when the player you mentioned is playing there, it's the Half Back role)
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker shorter passing, tiki taka, high press, high possession. Didn't think team tactics would affect individual player instructions but now you mention it I'll do some experimenting (when I wake up. It's 3am here) and see what happens
@@yoogeo1 No worries! I don't think they do either, but you never know! I've had issues where my player was accidentally on another role because of a personalized instruction or there was something with a conflicting instruction. Sometimes it's tough to figure out what it is exactly 😂
thanks! Been working on something for the counter attack! I wouldn't expect it here in the immediate future, but I think it'll show up at some point :)
Nope, sadly that instruction is built into the Half Back role. That's the trade off with using a "playmaking Half Back"; they are told to dribble less. In this case, FDJ will still dribble with the ball, he just won't do it as much as if he was in a dedicated playmaking position
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker to be fair its the 23 version. I dont know about the 24 version. I hope in the new 25 version all the player roles and player instructions are available
I think the idea is that even if the player has that player trait, they may not be great at dribbling out of trouble. So if a half back is playing their way out of trouble, and they have a poor dribbling attribute, then they could turn the ball over in a dangerous area of the field. Plus, the de Jong example not withstanding, you want your half back to make simple passes to move the ball, not to be dribbling with it. It's only my point of view but hope that helps!

For a complementary role, at the minimum I look for a role that can be played on Support. So the DLP or Regista if you're looking for a playmaker, the Segundo Volante if you want an attacker, and even a DM(S) can be really good with a HB
Finally!! My favorite FM position. In a 3-4-3 he acts like a hybrid DLP/BWM. Fabinho, Varela, and Edson Alvarez all work very well in this position.
When I make the video "Half Back: The Sequel" I want to talk about how they do in a back-3 formation
It’s a good Monday when The DLP releases a new video 😁
new week, new video!!
Hello !! Please do an attacking midfielder role guide!! Fully enjoying your great work
The AM!! A great suggestion; I may have forgotten about that one! I'll see if I can get something working on that for a future video; thank you!
Oooo I'm gonna need to try that haha. Thanks for the tip!!
I love doing that; once you're seeing the game out, the half back does wonder for stopping counters and allowing you to hold the ball
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Yeah, I find he just sures up the defence and allows me to block basically any attack
thank you good sir, that was an awesome video well worth the wait! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
HBs are great when in a back 4 against 2 strikers. A 3v2 in buildup and 3v2 in defensive transition. You cancel out a lot of the advantage
I also like how the half back moves in those transitional phases; the centerbacks drop back, but the HB moves up to pressure the ball. Helps stop in momentum the opponent can get on a counter
Excellent Video 🔝🔝🔝
I have a recommendation about two legendary managers or let's say legendary tactics if you can explain more about them , Valeriy Lobanovskyi with Dynamo Kyiv 🇺🇦 and Otto Rehhagel tactic with Greece 🇬🇷, anyway it's just a suggestion coz I believe you have the ability to make things looks very simple and very easy to understand too .. thanks a lot and keep the good up 👏🏾👏🏾
Now that's a video suggestion!!
There are some great videos out there on roles, but nothing quite with this presentation as well as such focus to specifc roles.
thank you my friend!! Happy the videos have been helpful 🙏
Idk if you take requests, but if you do I would like to request the CWB! Either way I love the vids dude keep it up!
The CWB isn't in the right immediate future, but it is on the way!
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker I’ll be ready to give it a watch for sure!! Keep up the good work my dude
I think more than the anchor this is the one player role I positively will never use 😭😭
As nice as the defensive coverage is, the best he can contribute offensively being a hockey assist is too much of a caveat personally, but great video as always nonetheless!
I thought the phrase hockey assist was nicer then saying "doesn't do much in attack" lol
great video!
thank you!!
Would be great if you make tier list of roles, would be great to hear your opinion.
I've been thinking about doing some kind of role tier for certain styles (so counter attacking try these roles, for possession, these ones, etc...)
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker great idea!
Will you also make a video explaining how to make a tactic that fits a certain team best?
I'm planning to make a more videos going over some different tactical ideas!
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Something to look forward to !
Thanks for the question and hope that helps!
love it
Thanks!!
Thank you sir 👍🏻🔝
No problem 👍
Thanks man❤
You're welcome 😊
Do u plan making something like tier list of role combinations or how to make more complex tactics?
I may do some type of video for role combos and formations, but probably not like an official "this role/combo is better than that one" type tier list
On the other hand, I'll probably delve into some more complex tactical stuff as we continue on with the channel.
I play this role on sundays depending on my team's quality. It's a pivotal role when you dont trust your defense!
I like the thought of your squad looking at the match team sheet, seeing a half back, and going "he doesn't trust us" haha
Great videos. May I ask what skin you use?
Thanks! It's the Rensie Dark FM24 skin. I got it from FMScout
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Thanks mate. I also suggest you can make scouting training or development videos. I would love to learn from you.
@@ozansevimli6683 No problem. Working on some ideas to start making some videos on scouting and training. Thanks for the suggestion!
Another FM University lesson. I do not use much the hb, do you need to offset him to work together with a libero on defence?
I believe they will try to avoid each other whe n switching if they can, and it's better if they're on opposite sides of each other.
If you're feeling especially ambitious, I was messing around and you can use a half back with two liberos and get some really.... interesting poistional play!
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker oh that would be a big shape-shifting tactic! Would make sense together with two IFBs, if you have a short hb and two very defensive fb. I just got a libero wonderkid with 12 finish and 13 long shots at 18, I will try this out when he grows up
FINALLY 😊
hope you enjoy!
Hi , can you do a video about counter attacking football/tactic? , love your videos Bro!
thanks! Been working on something for the counter attack! I wouldn't expect it here in the immediate future, but I think it'll show up at some point :)
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Thank Bro , really appreciate!!
Do you think a Regista will pair well with a half back?
Hmm I think it could! If I did, I'd probably use an IWB on at least one side to make sure there's someone in the midfield area
What happens with the dribble less warning shown at 10.20. Can you remove that?
Nope, sadly that instruction is built into the Half Back role. That's the trade off with using a "playmaking Half Back"; they are told to dribble less. In this case, FDJ will still dribble with the ball, he just won't do it as much as if he was in a dedicated playmaking position
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker thanks! Appreciate the answer on this.
we need that patreon link!
okay I love this idea!! Thank you for the suggestion!
I like half back. but that position is reserved for DLP D for me
You won't hear any complaints from me about using the DLP haha
What skin do you use?
The Rensie Dark FM24 skin. Should be able to find it on FMScout!
Amazing fm 23 mobile didn't have this so im curious
Interesting that mobile didn't have this one; figured it would've been a given!
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker to be fair its the 23 version. I dont know about the 24 version. I hope in the new 25 version all the player roles and player instructions are available
A very interesting role in FM 😂
Interesting indeed! The movement is really unique for a defensive midfielder
why would plays way out of trouble ever be a bad trait?
I think the idea is that even if the player has that player trait, they may not be great at dribbling out of trouble. So if a half back is playing their way out of trouble, and they have a poor dribbling attribute, then they could turn the ball over in a dangerous area of the field. Plus, the de Jong example not withstanding, you want your half back to make simple passes to move the ball, not to be dribbling with it. It's only my point of view but hope that helps!
Play a Half Back with a Libero for the chaos 😂
When I was messing around with tactics for this video, I did a 433 but had two liberos and a half back. It was a lot of fun hahaha
