Wow! This was so good. Whenever I feel like I have had enough of the game there is a timely video by yourself that makes it look so easy and I just have to jump back in 😂
haha you should see me when I make these videos. I'll be like "okay that's enough FM for the day" and then I'll be editing a play or something and go "well maybe just one more match"
This video helped me win the FA Trophy with a national south team against a national league team that finished in a playoff position. I used a 442 with a box to box midfielder at LCM with the stay wider instruction next to a deep lying playmaker on defend at RCM. An inverted winger on attack at LM and the RM as a winger on support. LB was a wingback on support and RB was an inverted wingback on attack. LS was a pressing forward with roam from position instruction and RS was an advanced forward. I was 3-0 up but they got 2 late goals. It was a great season because I also won the national south because of your possession video.
Amazing video once again. I really can't put to words how much I love your videos and how you make them. The fact that you actually test your principles without instructions is so insane to me but it helps me understand so much even on topics that I already know. Thanks so much man❤
my favourite formation lets go!!! youve helped me with your videos how to understand how create space and how static roles and roles with movement etc combine, great content man!.
I think your videos are really informative and instructive. I hope one day you will make a series that replicates the legendary tactics of legendary teams.
I love this video. Thank you for making it. Suggestion for a series of videos I'd love to hear you explain... the different types of formations. 433 v 4231, Gegenpressing, Tiki Taka, etc.
I love the concept of the video. You explain things clearly and progress with details smoothly. Concept of thinking about space instead of goals is explained well. I love that. What I do not like (and it is the first thing I do not like in the video on this channel) is that in this video protecting space in transition is neglected (maybe it was intentional to focus only on attacking movements?). And it is because (in my opinion) of very controversial player roles selection. There is no player who is responsible for providing cover in the midfield. In the 12th min clip there is no one occupying space in the middle before penalty box. Pass to IWB should be intercepted, which create plenty of space to run for opposing striker through the middle. Selected tactic (player roles) is very half space oriented. IWB and CAR both work in half spaces. HB is dropping deep. There is no one in the middle who can collect second ball and/or close down opponent to prevent counter attack. Also, IWB [a] may run into space occupying by MEZ[a]. IWB on support for me is more intuitive and safer option. Which raise the problem of role selection for left fullback. FB [a/s] may be ok, or just choose IFB and change HB to DLP/DM [d]. DLP/DM should works well with IWB [s] in providing cover. DLP may also benefit from IF + MEZ forward runs to send killer passes. Anyway, I may disagree on tactical choices, but concept of the video and the simplicity of explaining core problem in football is superb. I would love to see more detailed videos dedicated to understanding space. :)
thank you for the reply! I appreciate you taking the time to articulate your counter-arguments. I like the idea of tinkering with this and using the Inverted Full Back. I like using the back 4 in defense but back-3 in attack concept with this tactic, so I think using the IFB could solve that issue, and then like you say use a different midfield role for more coverage there
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker yeah but mistake from my side. If on the left we put IFB, IF (a) should be change to cut inside winger (a). We need someone who can do sth on left flank and not only rush defense blindly.
Great as usual, I'd love to hear your thoughts on training once you have finished with the tactical advice. I am obviously presuming you are one of us that likes to fashion their own training schedules!
thanks, and yep, I do my own training stuff! I've already started prelimenary work on a training video.. it won't be like tomorrow or anything haha but should be in the near(ish) future.
Love that formation. IF and wingers could be somehow substitutable during the match operating with the same main leg. Same with wb and ifb. Same wit mz and car. Like such a versatility.
This is eerily similar to the 4-3-3 i had lots of success with, position wise. Although, the right full back, one thing i tried was a fullback on support, and sit narrower. Its well worth a look, as the movement is very interesting. Seems to cover the middle of the pitch where the mezzala starts
Excellent video. Could you do one on what you do if things arent going as well as hoped in a match, perhaps 0-0 at half time or you're behind and need to turn things around.
Bro, first of all your content is a great help to me and always a pleasure to watch, keep it up my man. Just a suggestion for a video idea if you ever fancied it, you mentioned having it as one of your tactical styles, is there any chance of a video dedicated to using 3 tactical styles across a season? I’m half experienced half noob, and I always find myself finding a tactic that works, using it to death until it gets figured out then starting the process again, but I want to become a bit more tactically diverse, I when you mentioned 3 tactical styles a light bulb went, but I can’t find anything around to sort of simplify it for me to put it into practice. Cheers either way, love the vids man!
thanks and glad you like the videos! And I loooove that suggestion, thanks! May not be in the immediate future, but that'd be a video I'd love to make sometime
Amazing video. I am using a similar tactic but instead of F9 i use a TF (s) and a AP on attack instead of the Mezzala. But i am still trying to improve the tactic. Thank you
love the video with amazingpresentation and easy to understand explainations, im gonna watch the rest of your videos now wanted to ask wasnt henderson your carrilero not your mezzala or did you move him and from how you presented it, it sounded like a wing back on the right was just bad but if you wanted more width to focus on crossing into the box from the right side couldnt you use a wing back and utilise an overlap/form a triangle with your winger, wing back and mezz, not saying the inverted wingback is a bad idea was just a bit confused by the presentation cheers
ha good catch with Henderson! I would probably use him as a Carrilero mostly, but sometimes he played as a Mezzala. Also Taylor was crushing it as a Carrilero too; so Ajax has a ton of options in the midfield. And it's a personal prefence with the Winger / Wing Back. They have a lot of overlap in how they play, so I don't have two players playing down the flanks getting in crosses. I like the Winger to get crosses in and the IWB to fill that midfield role
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker if playing with a striker partnership and one of the strikers is a treq, should the other be a support duty for balance since the treq is an attack duty?
I have seen all your videos and this is like the best, i hope #footballmanager24 takes a note of this and more players see this. Also would love to see a create space in a 4231.
I'm not really into Twitch and things like that (I promise I'm not very interesting to watch in real time haha). But I thought about doing a stream for a special occassion; like if Luton Town had a Cup game, doing a stream for the week lead up. Show how I do training, set up the tactic, all that good stuff
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker spent last night watching every single video and I find you very interesting, even if it’s not live I would love to watch a 30 minute or so video of you doing your own save, maybe 2/3 games a video. Watching how you decide on your tactic how you handle the transfer window etc, you’re way of playing football manager is so different and exciting think it would make a brilliant watch
Ah yess! Space! Or as I like to think of it: "How can I make a 3-2-2-3 shape in possession out of this formation?" On a serious note, great video! Though I disagree slightly on the notion that players jn the same strata should not be on the same duty. You can absolutely get away with, say, 2 wingers on attack and an AF if you have quality support from behind, however, I would agree that it's better to diversify your duties across the field. At the end of the day, what really matters is where the players end up in possession and which defensive formation your opponent is using. I for one struggle mightly against 3atb using a 4-3-3 but a 4-2-3-1 dismantles them, but is also completely useless against other formations because of how specialised it is. Like an apex predator evolved for its environment.
ha thanks! and I thinking back I probably should've clarified a bit more on the selecting the duty. I agree in that you can get away with multiple player on attack (or support) in the same strata; I was more alluding to the fact that it's a good starting point to create some varietty if you're stuck. Like, you don't have to default to "oh they're attackers they must attack" kind of thing
I'd love to see a tactic where you're comfortably better than the opposition and just need goals, especially against a very defensive tactic. Like how do I go attacking with more attacking roles than the standard 3-4-3 D-S-A without all my players occupying the same space?
now that's a good question. I would say that playing narrow and then shorter passing and a higher tempo could be a good solution. Make your team compact and move the ball quickly
Once again a great video! Just have 1 question. With the IF present, why do you go for wingback on support instead of attack? To me, the width needed is further forwards, because the carrilero will provide width in the midfield where the wingback on support tends to be as well?
i want to play 4-2-3-1 so the mezzala is similar with shadow striker right ? with the shadow striker put on the left or the rigth with stay wider and roam form position instructions ?
They're a bit similar yea! But the Shadow Striker will be more aggressive in how the attack the goal, and the Mezzala will sometimes hang out in those half spaces a little more. (obviously one is a CM and one is an AM too lol)
I love the CF and he can be a contributor to a tactic like this; but sometimes I like having a player dedicated to that attacking midfield space. But if you have an elite player (like Harry Kane), he could totally do the job as a CF in this tactic
I use 433, Higher pressing from the def and attack I use mezz do yoy think i should use the the carralo role instead of it ? My main vision with the tactic is to have quick passes with having good psotioning
Thanks! Hope to make a video on that in the future, but in the short term, you would need runners attacking that midfield space the striker creates. Roles like the CM(A), IW(A), maybe using two IF, and AP (on the wing) are all good options
I sort of used this same structure with roles too, but used dlp instead of car. My question is will iwb one player enough to man the midfield? Or may be add team instructions to focus more on the wings?
I find that one IWB is usually good for support in the midfield. It doesn't hurt to add in instructions to help out, but generally I've liked how the IWB as a solo addition to the midfield plays (kinda like in this video). Thanks for the question!
Would it still work while using a deep lying forward instead of a false 9, rpm instead of car and a dm instead of a half back because other than that, the formation you showed is basically the one I’m using on a Brighton career
Yep, you shouldn't see too much difference. A DLF and F9 are definitely interchangeable, there will be a lot of similarities in what you saw in this video if you changed it to a DLF. The RPM and Carrilero don't have a ton of overlap (in terms of what they do), but if you've got a good RPM, it could be more effective for you than a Car. And the DM(D) and Anchor are good substitutes for the Anchor
What do you use for the midfield? I like at least one of them being an aggressive runner, like the CM(A) or Mezzala(A). The trick with the 352 is you have to get more players forward because the formation's starting position is defensive.
Nope, every highlight from this video used no team instructions or player instructions (the Ajax tactic I showed is what the entire video used). At the end, I used the "shorter passing" stuff as an example of what to expect when selecting those instructions but everything was the same throughout
In that last example of patient build up then direct passing, can't you achieve the same effect with play out of the back + more direct passing and not touching other instruction, or am I misunderstanding play out of the back? 🤔
you can't, not because you misunderstand play put of the back, but tempo. Tempo boiled down to how fast you want the ball going to the final third, low tempo good for patient build-up while high tempo good for counter attack
do you mean the highlight example where my Carrilero dribbles slowly and then passes it to the Wing Back, who hits the direct pass? Yea there's some overlap between them. Generally, play out of defense refers to how the goalie and defenders build out from the back, whereas the lower tempo will apply to everyone. There will naturally be some overalp on where one instruction ends and where the other starts
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker yes, on the last example of that slow build up and then "explosion" and you're into space. I always saw Play out of Defence as the slow build up instruction and tempo as how fast you want to go from your to the opponents box, but they probably overlap a bit. Thanks!
Usually I'll watch to see how the player performs in the role, and then forgive them for small errors. So if you're trying a player as a Mezzala (for example), they should still be getting into the right spots, or use positioning that you want to see more of. And then becaues of their lack of familiarity, you forgive them for them for things like misplaced passes, or wayward shots, things like that
looks good on attack but when actually happens when you lose the ball? isnt the fact that half of your team out of possition causing counter attack opportunity?
I for sure we could be caught on the counter; sometimes that's the trade off with a focus on a (more) attacking tactic. I do like the Half Back however to help curtail some of the counters
Great vidéo again! I still have one question, do you have any advice for making a more offensive advence forward (like Pressing f ont attack or even an advance forward) work in a 433? Thank you again for your work sir
thank you! and when using something like an Advanced Forward, I would use a more aggressive midfielder to attack the midfield area that's free. Namely the Central Midfielder(A) is a perfect solution for this. So a midfield of a BBM/Carrilero, CM(A), and HB could work;
@@kimbaolu8644you can, but it'll make shutting down your tactics easier since your attacking threats are from the same area, my suggestion is to change IWB to support instead of the wing.
I've got a few; there's one on a Defensive Tactic (how I wanted to set up a system to defend), there's one on how I set up a Press, and then there's one that's on a Counter tactic, but a team in there is set up to defend first (with the defensive mentality). If you check out my "Tactic Playlist" on the channel, they should all be there!

I use mezz do yoy think i should use the the carralo role instead of it ?
My main vision with the tactic is to have quick passes with having good psotioning
The mezzala can work still. And shorter passing and higher tempo would work for your quick passes I think
Finally...thanks
you're welcome!
Great video. How would you set up with a striker who doesn't drop deep?
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker thanks for your reply, really appreciate how you have been making the videos. Great work!!!
352 formation. How would you get that to work? and i mean 1 DMC and 2 MC. It's a SOB formation I can't seem to make work
What do you use for the midfield? I like at least one of them being an aggressive runner, like the CM(A) or Mezzala(A). The trick with the 352 is you have to get more players forward because the formation's starting position is defensive.
Do you have set player/team instructions you use with the formation and roles you showed with your Ajax team at the end ?
@@Brazio20 yes, I know that. But play out of the back has the effect of making you less direct in the first stages of build up, hence my question :)
do you mean the highlight example where my Carrilero dribbles slowly and then passes it to the Wing Back, who hits the direct pass? Yea there's some overlap between them.
Generally, play out of defense refers to how the goalie and defenders build out from the back, whereas the lower tempo will apply to everyone. There will naturally be some overalp on where one instruction ends and where the other starts
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker yes, on the last example of that slow build up and then "explosion" and you're into space.
I always saw Play out of Defence as the slow build up instruction and tempo as how fast you want to go from your to the opponents box, but they probably overlap a bit. Thanks!
brilliant
thank you!
pls make the deep lying playmaker roles
In your opinion, how important is the role's familiarity for the role performance? half bar is enough?
Usually I'll watch to see how the player performs in the role, and then forgive them for small errors. So if you're trying a player as a Mezzala (for example), they should still be getting into the right spots, or use positioning that you want to see more of.
And then becaues of their lack of familiarity, you forgive them for them for things like misplaced passes, or wayward shots, things like that
Any chance of getting a route 1 video like this
Definitely hope to do more of these videos in the future; I'll keep Route 1/hoofball stuff in mind
could you make one for the 4-2-3-1
Yep! Definitely plan on doing videos for more formations, including the 4231
looks good on attack but when actually happens when you lose the ball? isnt the fact that half of your team out of possition causing counter attack opportunity?
I for sure we could be caught on the counter; sometimes that's the trade off with a focus on a (more) attacking tactic. I do like the Half Back however to help curtail some of the counters
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker any way to lower counter attack chances even more while having this strat?
Great vidéo again! I still have one question, do you have any advice for making a more offensive advence forward (like Pressing f ont attack or even an advance forward) work in a 433? Thank you again for your work sir
thank you! and when using something like an Advanced Forward, I would use a more aggressive midfielder to attack the midfield area that's free. Namely the Central Midfielder(A) is a perfect solution for this. So a midfield of a BBM/Carrilero, CM(A), and HB could work;
I will try! thank you for your time ! :)
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Should I switch to support duty for both player on the wing so the AF or PF can get as much support as he want ?
@@kimbaolu8644you can, but it'll make shutting down your tactics easier since your attacking threats are from the same area, my suggestion is to change IWB to support instead of the wing.
Do you have a video on how to defend?
I've got a few; there's one on a Defensive Tactic (how I wanted to set up a system to defend), there's one on how I set up a Press, and then there's one that's on a Counter tactic, but a team in there is set up to defend first (with the defensive mentality). If you check out my "Tactic Playlist" on the channel, they should all be there!
Does a af work instead of the f9 for this tactic?
I would probably use something like a CM(A) if I was going with the AF, but yep the tactic shouldn't change too drastically
What about an overload tactic?the opposite? Or an adaptation?
ooo I do love the idea of making a video about overloads... love that suggestion thank you!!
Can you make a tactic about how to be more direct
hope to make some more formation ideas, and one about more direct/long balls, in the future
agaaainnnnnnnnnn
How would you create space with a line leading striker?
More emphasis on the midfield and runners. Namely the Central Midfielder(A) would pair very well with a striker like the Advanced Forward
👌👍
anyone counted spaces? :D
I would not recommend playing a drinking game with how many times I say "space" in this one haha
Where is the instructions?
There's no team or player instructions for this tactic
I love your videos! There is so much to appreciate about your content, but I have to ask-are you a designer? Your attention to detail and visual design direction, among other things, don't seem coincidental.
thanks! I appreciate the kind words. And yea, I studied graphic design back in college. Had a focus on Typography and Design. I don't do it professionally, but the stuff I learned carries over to these videos I guess
Basic stuff 😂. As a fellow Indonesian, I want to conrat team Indonesia for winning the FIFAe FM world cup 2024.🎉
