- So we got a call… sorry @MattsOffRoadRecovery 😂 so late one night a post went up on the Discovery 3&4 Owners Group from a fella that had rolled his pride and joy up on a North Wales Greenlane. The WhatsApp group chats were In full swing and myself and Ben ( @b97riley -IG) were both available and keen to go and see what we could do to help out!
Theres not a huge amount of Discovery 3/ LR3 or Discovery 4/ LR4 rollover incidents recorded luckily so hopefully this can show other owners how quickly things can go wrong!

Well done for helping a fellow Disco owner out of a real spot. Subscribed
The puddle in the background, would have been all my tears . 😭
Yeah likewise 😂
As a Disco 4 owner this was interesting, thanks. Subscribed.
Thanks for helping my friend. :))).
Well done for helping out! I’d be mortified rolling such a nice disco. Glad no one was hurt
That’s the main thing, everyone wales away 👍🏻 and the recovery was done safely 👌🏼
Cheers bud, hope you’re well 👍🏻
@@D4SVX good thanks, for a second I thought it was your disco that had rolled!
Good recovery. Such a shame for the owner but we all live and learn, one of my biggest fears is rolling over, always makes me consider getting a proper external cage on my defender.
Cheers 👍🏻 don’t take this as me slating the Defender, I love them, always have, but if this was a defender it would have lead to a hospital trip IMO. Roll cage is the way forward with them.
Where are the recovery points on the front of the LR4 ? I can’t find any on mine.
Qudos for helping the fella out👌
You sir have just earned another sub 😝 D4 SDV6 owner with 190,000miles ✊🏽
Thanks for sharing Eric👍👍
Painful to watch but a mighty good job you did at recovering the car. Slow and controlled
Glad he got out unscathed! Excellent recovery👍
Now, how much for the prospeed rack and ladder 😬😉
Well… I’ve already seen that he’s got the engine going after draining it all out and he’s sourcing replacement panels etc, Prospeed rack probably saved the roof 👍🏻
@@D4SVX fair play to him. Big project ahead!
I jest about the rack of course. Sturdy kit
@@TantersD3 I’d have gone the other way with it at that point, strip the interior right out, chop the body to pieces to fit 37’s and do a tray back 😂
Some fear is good drivers, it builds wisdom. If your sixth sense is telling you not to do something, listen, if it isn’t than be suspicious 👍🏼
Remarkably in shape for a rollled. Truck
Fair play mate, cracking job 👍
Cheers mate 👍🏻
To nice to be doing that!
Scary expensive; LR4 owner, I try and avoid side slopes, especially those that like to eat Landrovers 😎
Did your landowner hydro lock cuz I rolled mine like 3 days before I seen your video and it’s been hydrolocked it’s way expensive
Great recovery. I live in Corwen (just by llan) and haven’t yet managed to explore or find any routes. I’ve done the wayfarer but when I got to llanarmon and tried to go over the top to glynduds I found it to be lined with boulders that the farmer had put there (despite being a BOAT). How do you go about your route finding and being confident you’re allowed where you are planning to go?
Love the wayfarer and the lane that’s blocked I’m assuming is whitestones, straight across the bridge in llanarmon DC?
So I’m a member of the Green Lane Association, while generally I think they do good work I don’t agree 100% with everything they do, but you get access to a website called Trailwise2 / TW2. It’s an interactive map that shows Greenlanes across the country and will show their current status, some lanes, Wayfarer for example have been closed recently (possibly open now?) and it would flag both wayfarer and whitestones with a hazard symbol. When you click on the lane it will then show you what the issue is, TRO/TTRO/One Way/Voluntary Restraint etc, as well as user comments. People write things like “suitable for all” or “tight and scratchy” etc 👍🏻
Greatest video and nice how you described what you did and why.
Thanks Brian, 👍🏻
Ooof 😫 does insurance pay out on green lanes? Because they are still technically public highways? Curious as I don’t know and would be gutted if this happened to me.
Google says yes! 😂
As far as I know my insurance cover me, like you say a green lane is (as long as it’s legal and not subject to TRO) a road 🤷🏻♂️. I’m insured through Adrian flux and obviously I’ve got a few modifications 😂 all declared etc… but insurance companies are notoriously slippery so who knows what happens should the worst happen?
If the insurance company know there is a Voluntary restriction in place then they have their get out of jail free card.
Just because you can (or can't in this case) doesn't mean you should.
Great recovery! Great channel! I'm no. 906
Thanks 🙏🏻 greatly appreciated 👍🏻
It is the first D3/D4 rollover vid I see, and I have looked! So I gather they could start the car again, but not make it roadworthy, right? It has become a parts donor? Was an estimate made on whether it was even possible and how much it would have cost to restore it to roadworthy? Also, did you consider i serting an X-Jack underneath to soften the thump? It would have got nixed, of course, but still...
So far I’ve heard that he got the engine running the following week after draining it and refilling oil, coolant etc.
Not sure how much further he’s got with making the body look back to showroom condition 😅
Amazing rescue job
Nice . well done 👍🏽 but with one pulley you do not multiplying the pull just change the direction of pulling
That’s me, and my truck recovering the 110. Much simpler recovery than yours. 😂
Ace 👍🏻 think I saw this pic on NorthWalesLive or something like that and it was about a week after the recovery we did 😅 panicked a bit when I started reading the article.
Do you get a few call outs to HV?
...well done sir
Nice job...!😎
Thanks 🙏🏻
Great
Great job, don’t suppose the damaged D4 was still driving by any chance?
We didn’t want to try turning the car on, it had been upside down for 14 hours so all the fluids in the engine would have mixed 😬 the owner had it drained and refilled and they got it back running 👍🏻
Did you try to start and run the car once you righted it...
No we decided against it. It had been over on its lid for 14 hours so all the fluids could have been mixed. The owner said that he had it drained and refilled, and it started up no problem 👍🏻
Is that to say they repaired the car and it's roadworthy again?
Pretty sure that'll buff out.
Yup. Find it next week on autotrader. “One owner, low mileage”. Sadly that comment may well be true.
I give ALL the glory to the Lord Jesus Christ Who is God and His Holy Ghost.
What tyres do have on? They look like HS 801Q
General Grabber at3 on the roller
Toyo Open Country MT’s 33” on mine and Bens 👍🏻
Disko♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
If they weren’t going off piste and just turned around when they realised the lane was not passable this wouldn’t have happened.
Damn…💔
Is the car for sale?
Not as far as I know, i think the owner got it running and is sourcing replacement panels etc 👍🏻
I would have had a winch if possible or a rope and vehicle on the offside rockslider to lower it under control if possible, otherwise all good. Hay ho wows of green laning in a nice vehicle.
Definitely would have been ideal to have a second winch on the job. To control it like you say 👍🏻 we couldn’t really get Bens disco past it to do that with a strap because of the bog. Couldn’t get hold of another winch so we made do
What an Earth were they doing to roll it in the first place!!!!!!
6:25
Sideways slide down a bank 😬
@@D4SVX Thanks. Difficult to see from the video, so I'm still not really sure how they actually ended up in a position to even get close to rolling. If the lane is not in a state to be driven, they shouldn't really have been there anyway. All the info is on Trailwise.
It'll buff out 😂
I think and looks like a total loss. Shame tho, that's why I don't do any offroading I live in the city which is prone to floods so the air suspension and the wading prowess of my Disco 3 comes in handy for that. I hope I'm wrong and he's able maybe to fix it. Cheers 🇬🇧 🍻
Might as well crane it straight into a Scrap Skip
Q pena, espero que estén todos bien
Always steer into the slide, not away was something I learned , don't know if it would have made a blind bit of difference here, but... gods... to roll your facelift D4... I would have been crying. I think, I'd have considered faking my death rather than go back and face my wife! In fact, I think death would be preferable to facing the wife!
Agreed, if he had steered into it then he may have increased the chance of saving it but it’s hard to say.
That was one of the reasons we were keen to go and help 😂 a professional off road recovery firm would charge at least £1000 to get him to the road so hopefully we softened the blow a bit 😬
not just any face lift, a XXV
Always go in teams offroading.
They were out as a group of 5 D4’s but none of them had a winch or the skills/knowledge of how to attempt this type of recovery, hence the call for help 👍🏻 they all managed to get themselves down off the track and to a local hotel so in that sense they were a decent team 😂
😥😔😔
Can you imagine trying to get anywhere in Utah with a Disco!? I think there's a reason we don't see D3 rock crawlers! This week on Fab Rats we rebuild the spare wheel winch, change the door lock actuators and separate the entire body from chassis to change a stupid piece of exhaust pipe!
There’s a few I know of tbf 😂 to be honest it’s a bit of a dream of mine to ship the disco over and have a go 👍🏻
But yeah… fiddly 😂
@@D4SVX I can already see a 4part RUclips series where you go to the USA, buy a d4 V8 (go in, you know want one!) and build an over lander then take off cross country.
Budget could be tricky but heck, it’d be a cracking series.
Then cone down here to Oz ... but get stuck because prices if second hand D3/D4 gave gone up 50% over that’s 18 months. 😡
That's the first D4 rollover vid I have seen, though, and I have looked!
Or D3, for that matter.
@@pl2252 I have seen one from AUS somewhere a while back but it was the same as mine, no video of the actual roll over but they showed the aftermath and recovery. Luckily it’s not a super common occurrence, they’re mega heavy low down and there nice and stable. 👍🏻😀
What a shame to destroy such a nice vehicle... 😡
The owner of the rolled Disco actually had the car working by the end of the week and it was repaired fully within 2 months 👍🏻
@@D4SVX Body swap, I guess ?
The recovery was easy but listening to that awful background music was painful 😖🙉
And that is why their is a voluntary Restraint on using that lane. Now why isnt there a TRO on it ? Well because the council want people to go up there and make more of a mess and have incidents so they have more ammunintion to close ther lane. Its like look we asked you not to use the lane but you 4x4 guys cant help yourself so we are goign to shut it. So please folks stay off this lane unitl its fixed
Stewart Pickering I’m well aware of the VR on Happy Valley and the sensitive situation 👍🏻 it’s one of the reasons I’ve never been on happy valley before this event. The blokes weren’t on a D3/4OG “laning trip” or led by me in any other way, when the car rolled I was chilling at home 😂 but they posted a shout for help on this group and I was free to help. In my opinion going against a Voluntary response to help someone in need is a valid reason for being there 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻 but I don’t condone the use of HV
To be fair, there were VR signs at each end, so why does it need a TRO.
For example, we were up there at the time of this recovery, and we had no issue at all with the full route.
They want to donate those parts for medical vehicle in Ukraine?
No they are not, never mind
Still a beautiful car wrecked .
Personally if it was mine that had rolled I’d have just owned it 😅 maybe strip the whole thing out, chop it to bits, roll cage and 37’s 😂 but maybe I’ve spent too much time in the sun today
The owner would have been better spending less on a vehicle and more on off road driving tuition. i got my experience by buying an old land rover and competing in many CCV trials over the years. Plenty of roll overs with( strong cages) and experience gained....
Well I agree and disagree 😅 a disco 4 is capable of doing 95% of the UK’s green lanes STOCK so for the casual/occasional laner no real training or tuition is needed imo. This fella was genuinely unfortunate and missed the line by a couple of inches at most.
Personally I’ve been laning with my disco for 6 years, several Pyrenees trips and thousands of miles driven off road, the more I go the more I learn. An opportunity like this to practice a recovery despite being pretty grim for the fella who’s disco it was, was actually incredibly useful for me. I had the chance to put some theory into practice which is always good 👍🏻 would love to have a “play” Landy, battered up 90 or something like that to go and get right into it 👍🏻
You can't park there sir
😂👍🏻

Thanks for the video
The force on those wheels must have been immense. Would digging holes for the wheels have helped?
The landscape views are great!
Before I post a comment, I give ALL the glory to the Lord Jesus Christ Who is God and His Holy Ghost.
Rolling a vehicle is easier than it sounds. When the roll begins, one’s entire instinct is to turn away from the roll (instead of into it) making it worse.
I had a terrible experience with the Discovery Sport the Lord Jesus Christ Who is God and His Holy Ghost gave my mom. Didn’t roll, but never again will I do inclines at an angle. Beware folks.
Also, I’m interested to know if the recovered disco has power steering or not?
You sir have just earned another sub 😝 D4 SDV6 owner with 190,000miles ✊🏽
