  • Hello and welcome friends to Legendlore, where I draw pictures of gods, monsters, and characters from D&D while giving a small but dense history about them! This week, we will be talking about the slavic-born witch, archfey, and one of the most powerful mages in all of D&D lore: Baba Yaga.

0:50 I think, Yaga became invincible to iron with her magic, and now her teeth is the weapon against other faes.

My personal favorite encounter for my players with Baba Yaha. She and another powerful witch name Deneboros, an NPC of mine, were having a simple.... Fey Chess Game in the magic shop. Now for some context, the party is on good terms with the Denny (her nickname from the party), because she has sold them healing salves, potions, and other things at a fair price along with giving them some side quests and missions which they had upheld their end to the best of their ability.
So... upon seeing their favorite shopkeep Denny in the midst of an intensive chess match with this old crone, the party suspected it was a Hag but not Baba Yaha. Though the presence of the three knights behind the crone and the Witch's loyal golem knights were behind her too. The party were silent and tense, and ready to jump the Crone and her minions if she did anything to hurt their favorite shopowner,
A few side rolls later. Denny loses the chess match, flings an exaggerated lost with the crone making a soft chuckle of triumph. The party feared the worst when Denny admitted she must fork over her prize possession to the Crone for her astounding victory; mind you the party thought Denny was in danger and were readying for a fight.
Denny presents to the Crone and saying this: "Fine. Here it is. As promise to our chess match Baba Yaga, One of my 15 delicious pumpkin sweets recipe. Pumpkin Spice Latte."
The party, as they were holding their actions to attack, just made a simultaneous "Huh?" moment while Baba Yaga accepted the recipe page from Denny with a smile and out of good sportsmanship gives Denny a large bag full of Fey Plants and Shrooms. Then Baba Yaga looked at the party as they were still standing dumbfounded and still. Calling out to them.
Baba Yaga: "What this? Did the little nippers thought I was going to hurt sweet little Denny? My. I never. But I can see that she is well loved and cared for. I usually come here from time to time to see one of my dearest friends on a chess match and some recipe exchanges."
Getting up from her seat, giving Denny a warm motherly hug, pats the party members on the shoulders, they consented to this, and the old crone makes her way out while giving the party a foreshadowing warning:
"I suspect I'll be meeting you kiddies again in the future. Don't be making such faces. Not all the tales about me are true. But I'll leave it to you to decide."
    -
I sort of made Baba Yaga a more neutral force of chaos that mentors those that truly seek her out and want to learn the true nature of the arcane and mystical ways of the universe. Deneboros is another creature of the mystical arts that I was inspired by another character from another media; and is one of Baba Yaga's confidants even if they sometimes have opposing views or methods on dealing with situations.

I'll give you a tip - watch Soviet films with George Millar (Georg De Milieu) in the role of Baba Yaga. For us, Russians, this is one of the best version of Yaga, moderately funny, moderately creepy, very charismatic and, most importantly, she is actually powerful and dangerous, although not all films show this. Make it a little darker, and get, as for me, the perfect model for role-playing Yaga on your games.

As russian, i love that the Baba Yaga in DnD, in fact, the most powerful creature 🤣. Because, you know, even gods can be killed, but not the freakin' crone in the rollickin' dilapidated rotten hut. I love this kind of imbalance character, that's didn't destroy all multiverse just because it's too boring!

I made a mistake. I gave this to my low level alchemist artificer. Well I guess it works because he has a50% Chance if he uses any of the properties of the bowl, the spirits within it will take control over his character in the DM will have control of him.

Baba Yaga's Horseman are "three" men.
Where are you getting Bright Dawn is a woman?
Even kobald press monster manual has them as men.
They repersent a man in his youth, prime, and elder age.
    Smh.

I based my coverage of the riders off of Pathfinders depiction which has the white rider as a woman, www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/fey/baba-yaga-s-riders/the-white-rider/
I don’t think i knew that kobold press made their own version or the originals were all male so thanks for letting me know :)
