To be honest, My preference of soda has changed drastically since I started watching Game Theory. To put it simply, my enjoyment of something is greatly increased when I connect that item to something. Like how every time I drink Diet Coke, I think of MattPatt's obsession over them, so my enjoyment of the soda is much higher.
i think thats how its been for me over the years as well. more so the recent last 3 years. i was avidly buying tons more energy drinks for instance monster pringles as the food and rockstar at times or other junk food purely because the premotional content on the products adheared to unlocking free things through a code on the games i played. even those i didnt really play anymore, i would still buy them to eat drink and use the codes for the games i had. the halo infinate codes, the apex legends codes, i think at one point even the MW II codes were the few games i had that i would tend to buy these products more often because it was relatable and a sick way to chill out knowing i have something new and to chill out and show off. when i played the early seasons of halo infinate with the premotional content going into BTB and seeing so many players with the sick oreo premotional skin looked so sick and made me want to buy oreos just to try and get it. it was annoying tho because it was on the oreo thins which i wont buy because i prefer the original. even tho i stopped playing apex, i was buying monster energy drinks anyway so i thought i might as well buy the ones that have the free codes and content just so i have things most people dont in the game if i were to ever return to it. the only ones i really got from MW II i think were some stickers, emblems and xp tokens as i didnt buy many of them.
Honestly having a sugar free version that is indistinguishable from the original is probably a good thing for our overall health (unless it involves artificial sweeteners that have negative effects on health, in which case maybe not). It may be a while before they can actually pull it off though...
i really like the idea of having hosts other than matpat for these theory videos, like Steph and Dan. i hope they do this every so often, especially if Matt needs more breaks like this.
Dan, definitely He’s really good at this But god, please don’t let Stephanie narrate these I swear she’s gonna do that stupid nugget guy voice every video
Dan has experience narrating stuff and doing VO stuff on his channel, Mat has been doing game theory and other stuff for a decade, Steph doesn't have that experience, she is better on camera than doing voice work.
another thing to note is that the special coke flavors that centered the zero sugar versions of them, is that the only way to buy them in bulk is in the 10 packs of mini cans, which im assuming is another health thing like "oh im having soda but its only a little bit so it will be fine" I've noticed these things while working in grocery
It's worse than you think, this is shrinkflation to the extreme being sold as a positive. A regular 12 pack of coke costs appx. $8.00 at my local grocery store, and contains 144 fl oz of product. The Mini version has 10 cans at 7.5 fl oz per can and costs $6.50 for 75 fl oz of product. You're basically paying 19% less for 50% of the product.
My mom would drink a Coke a day for the caffeine. She switched to Coke Zero, figuring that would help her lose weight. She started experiencing all sorts of aches and pains and doctors told her she had arthritis in her 50s. It got so bad she would need me to push the grocery cart for her. I came across an article in Reader’s Digest about a woman who recovered from her debilitating pain after she stopped drinking zero calorie flavored water with artificial sweeteners. So my mom quit the daily Coke Zero habit and suddenly all the pain vanished. She’s 73 now. She still doesn’t have arthritis
And that is why I’m never drinking diet or sugar free sodas. Idc if it’s the last sodas available- I’ll GLADLY take the sugar over whatever weird stuff they put in those "diet" sodas
welp hate to break it to ya, but multiple sodas already use aspartame. Personally i just stick to kool-aid + soda water (so i can add my own suger) or mexican coca-cola whenever i can find it (it uses raw cane suger, and tastes better imo)
You should try Pur brand gum, its aspartame free. They use xylitol which is dentist recommended since it’s good for your teeth because it reduces acid in the mouth and starves bacteria.
I get headaches with sweeteners, Coke is my last bastian but my Exit strategy is no alcohol or even low alcohol beers, no joke, I can pick up a case of generic "stubbies" at 2% alcohol CHEAPER than coke per litre, you can make home made "lilt" with fruit juces water and sugar syrup, then soda stream it as a sweet refreshment. Seriously, if the industry or Government don't want my money/want all my money for a glass of pop then screw em
Hi, I made a killer 3D Design and Animation on Coca-Cola, It's pretty cool. If I may ask, does Coca-Cola have any interest in marketing projects done by individuals? 🙂
Dan's voice is fantastic, and Matthew seems to be putting too much strain on his voice too often, so I'm hoping Team Theorist makes Dan a permanent part of VO duties (as in regularly scheduled to take on a small percentage, not just emergency coverage), so Matthew has regular voice rests.
I kinda do love having Dan be the voice for the videos, especially when he's judging the script. Also that cold open ENDED ME "NO YOUR TEARS WONT TASTE LIKE DIET COKE"
Oh my god That makes so much sense !! The amount of times I bought coke zero thinking it was coke and drank it half way before realising it was the wrong one is astonishing tbh. Now it makes sense why that happened
It’s awful how they’re trying to trick people. I’ve accidentally drunk several beverages here in Switzerland because they don’t disclose the artificial sweeteners clearly on the front. I guess I have to get in the habit of reading every single beverage’s ingredients (which is hard when you’re buying something unfamiliar from behind the counter at the boulangerie 😕)
I’d like to see a theory about aspartame and other artificial sweeteners. Growing up in a diabetic household I was told that sugar-free stuff was deadly because of how the body processed the fake sugar. Still can’t get over jt
Everything in moderation. The early studies are showing that artificial sweeteners can impact the gut micro biome negatively. I just cut down on simple sugars and eat more whole plant foods with fibers. I also exercise and sleep good. Also maintain a social life. People miss the importance of these few factors, and gut micro biome may be one of the biggest influence on our health. I wouldn’t mess with it by consuming artificial sweeteners. Maybe once in a while is fine, especially if you’re gonna have soda every once in a while and have the artificial sweetener version of it instead. But ideally you wouldn’t be putting that kinda stuff in your body in the first place, since there’s way too much simple sugar in one can/bottle.
Erythritol is a really good sugar alternative in my experience. None of the downsides, gets metabolized differently from other fake sugars, and the sugar-free Monster Energies already use it if you want to know how good it really is.
Food theory Idea: Would you be able to lift someone off the ground momentarily with of coke and mentos? And if not is there any kind of food that could?
I’ve never had a single sugar free soda that didn’t taste terrible and have that artificial sweetener aftertaste. When they figure it out call me. Until then, I’m sticking to water 😂
I love Coke and can still definitely taste the difference between it and zero sugar. If I have to choose I will choose the 'classic' Coke. If they're able to make zero sugar taste exactly like it, I'll be fine with drinking it. But also, to combat the high sugar in Coke, I cut it out except for when I have takeaway or am eating out and not having it at home. Sometimes, I have a different drink instead of Coke when out or with takeaway. I know for others it's not that easy, but if you take baby steps, it can work. I started by replacing Coke with a different, less sugary soda, cordial or juice at home, then replaced that with another less sugary drink. Now I drink more water and sometimes have soda, cordial or juice at home. I don't have a sugary drink every day and drink more water, sometimes with some flavouring. This has worked for me, and I hope it can help others who want to cut down on sugary drinks.
I love hearing Dan in VO! He’s so fun! I also kinda enjoy the idea that Dan is taking this video (which is so clearly a Matpat theory after his own heart, I mean a theory about THE NECTOR OF THE GODS?!) so that Matt can grieve. I’m all for the team joining in the recording closet!!
I’ve also noticed in stores like Walmart for example I’m often finding Coke Zero’s and the zero sugar versions of the Coke Creations drinks are usually placed in more natural/prominent spots than the full sugar versions.
That's not a choice Wal-Mart is making, that's what Coke demands of their vendors, since they are the ones that send out the schematic for product placement.
@@kumiho4970 I know it is. Many brands especially large brands like Coke, or Oreo for cookies those companies often get a lot of say as to exactly how and where there products is displayed.
They’re doing the same can tricks with Sprite. It’s now really hard to tell the cans apart, and I’ve drunk sprite zero sugar on accident. The flavor is still different though hence me even knowing I’ve made the mistake.
They tried to pull the same trick when phasing out Sierra Mist for Starry. Tell ya what tho, my husband loved Sierra Mist and he immediately spit out Starry and wouldn’t drink any more without even knowing it was a different soda. Crazy how much switching sweeteners can ruin something.
Surprised this wasn’t about the recent report about aspartame being a potential carcinogen. Also, I *really* liked the space soda. It was really novel. But then, I’m not much of a soda drinker.
People are blowing it out of proportion. They only are going to put it in "possibly carcinogenic" with stuff like pickled vegetables, talc based baby powder, gasoline, and welding fumes. The group above it has frying emissions, red meat, and night shift work but no one is freaking out about those.
@@anthonynguyen1289I also remember hearing like 15 years ago, people coming out and exposing that aspartame was made from the fermented waste of e coli bacteria. I never touched it again after that cuz ewww. They've spent millions keeping others quiet to preserve their brand so honestly it wouldn't surprise me.

i like the idea that sometimes the voices can change a bit. Having Dan as replacement for a while is actually not bad, i enjoyed it actually! Kind of like a refresher.
As a gas station attendent that talks to venders and handles incoming stock, many people look over Coke Zero. Grabbing it by mistake if they wanted the original, or not recognizing it when the wanted the diet version.
Yeah, at work they have a fridge full of sodas, and they put the Cherry Coke and the Cherry Coke Zero next to each other, so I thought it was all regular Cherry Coke for awhile and avoided buying any, but noticed the Zero Sugar label eventually. So diet Dr. Pepper got my money instead, for I don't know how long.
Not normally one to comment, but I figured I'd throw out a praise for Dan. You hit it out of the park, to the point I think this is actually my favorite food theory episode. Would welcome more guest appearances from the rest of the team.
I love editor Dan, but Mat's voice is still the best to me. It's a huge part of the whole feel of the theory videos. A few guest episodes would be fine, but I wouldn't want to see it stray too far from Mat speaking regularly.
What would be a good episode might be weighing the cost-benefit of sugary sodas vs. their non-sugary alternatives to figure out which is truly better for you. Like, they usually substitute it with aspartame, which is not something that is all that great to consume.
Agreed. I'm a diet soda drinker, and my whole life I've heard people telling me, "Y'know, the stuff they put in diet soda to replace the sugar isn't healthy, either." I'd be curious to know if that's true or if it's just an old wives' tale.
Aspartame is probably the least concerning artificial sweetener, more studies have been done on that chemical than water (hyperbole), and if we're going to worry about any sweeteners it should probably be the newer and less tested ones, not that there's a good chance any of them are more harmful than sugar.
Zevia brand is what my family uses. After hearing aspartame "may have" caused my cancer (it was the only red flag that applied to me, but the dieticians were quick to suggest giving up on changing anything, a rant for another comment), mom made sure that everything was thoroughly researched as safe. Zevia has no artificial sweeteners or dyes, just natural flavoring and stevia (actual stevia).
I would rather just stop drinking soda than drink artificial sweetener ones, because I really can taste the difference. I hate how even juices have added artificial sweeteners just to lessen the amount of sugar, when it still really does taste different (and bad, to me). If im going to drink something unhealthy, let me just drink something unhealthy! Lol
Every diet soda I’ve tried has the exact same horrible aftertaste. The company that solves THAT problem will be unstoppable (especially if they release a caffeine-free variant).
Migraines and cluster headache also get worse by most artifical sweetern, as someone who has cluster headache (suicide headache as nickname) I wouldnt mess with it but also having sugar drops sugar sodas disappearing makes me sad
Have to say, I have to say I really enjoy how Dan breaks down these different videos in Matt's place. Might I recommend occasionally doing a "duet" video. 😅 just a thought. Great vid as always guys, keeps me sane at work
I'd be interested in what you have to say about the WHO's current investigation on aspartame, one of the main sweeteners of Coke Zero/Diet, and the possible correlation to cancer.
interesting to say, i switched over to coke zero early last year and havent looked back. regular sodas have so many carbs and sugar that getting coke zero, gatorade zero, etc have been great to still get a pretty similar taste(it was definitely weird on my first couple taste tests but im used to it now) without having to cut it out of my life entirely which i had tried in the past and failed
This is interesting and in a way opposite to the soda trends I've noticed here in Finland. With the combination on micro brewery trends and the sober curious movement, sodas have been getting new brands and flavours specifically to be the non-alcoholic counterpart to micro brewery beers, ciders and long drinks. The sodas have interesting flavours that are more mature and maybe a bit strange and I feel like they are starting with the now trending sour beer flavours, so sour raspberry and dry cider like dry apple are the first flavours. With the clean, fresh ingredients being a big marketing tactic here, "sugar free" is not something you see. I like this trend, because the sodas are less sweet and I am such a sucker for "pickled berries" or "lemon and seasalt" type of flavours (these are actual soda flavours, tried the lemon one, didn't meet my expectation, but it was okay). Also I like the idea of having several different flavoured sodas for when hanging out woth friends, instead of a big bottle of some too sweet basic soda, like coca cola.
Head editor Dan is a PHENOMENAL host! MatPat will always be the original Theorist, but it is SO REFRESHING to have different voices and hosts from time to time.
im conscious of my sugar intake when it comes to soda too, but instead of drinking diet versions, i just drink the full sugar sodas less often in moderation. makes me hope the market doesn't go too overboard with replacing full sugar, though i don't think that'll happen
That's exactly what I do. I have been banging on about aspartame for years and now the world is finally catching up to me, In fact, I choose Coke because they alone did not bow to the UK Government's obsession with forcing manufacturers to put aspartame into EVERYTHING
@@stevesamson3940yeah aspartame is just an awful sweetener. There are way better tasting artificial sweeteners out there (even if none are a true replacement for sugar in taste) so why choose the worst option.
@@stevesamson3940I hate the sugar tax that made sugary drinks more expensive. My dad told me the dangers of aspartame for years now and it's only me and my dad in my family that don't drink diet drinks.
@@Portal-Ninja there aren't any dangers. I don't know if it's healthy in a vacuum but if you regularly consume too much sugar then aspartame is definitely the healthier alternative.

It may be a while before they can actually pull it off though...

another thing to note is that the special coke flavors that centered the zero sugar versions of them, is that the only way to buy them in bulk is in the 10 packs of mini cans, which im assuming is another health thing like "oh im having soda but its only a little bit so it will be fine" I've noticed these things while working in grocery
It's worse than you think, this is shrinkflation to the extreme being sold as a positive. A regular 12 pack of coke costs appx. $8.00 at my local grocery store, and contains 144 fl oz of product. As someone who is allergic to Aspartame, this “no sugar” trend is making me nervous! I already can’t chew gum … don’t tell me soda is next
welp hate to break it to ya, but multiple sodas already use aspartame.
You can always get a carbonation machine and make your own soda (and coke) with soda syrups and your sweetener of choice.
I'm sensitive to a few types of sweeteners (migraines) and it's so hard to find drinks I can have, I've been relying on Coke Classic mainly haha

But ideally you wouldn’t be putting that kinda stuff in your body in the first place, since there’s way too much simple sugar in one can/bottle.
ok
Erythritol is a really good sugar alternative in my experience. None of the downsides, gets metabolized differently from other fake sugars, and the sugar-free Monster Energies already use it if you want to know how good it really is.

I guarantee that coke is probably experimenting with different sweetners as we speak such as monkfruit so they can switch over silently
interesting to say, i switched over to coke zero early last year and havent looked back. regular sodas have so many carbs and sugar that getting coke zero, gatorade zero, etc have been great to still get a pretty similar taste(it was definitely weird on my first couple taste tests but im used to it now) without having to cut it out of my life entirely which i had tried in the past and failed

Me too! I liked them both and that's unusual I get very attached to my announcers.😂
I like that, I hope that catches on in the U.S.
