- Reaper, also known as Gabriel Reyes, harks back to the very beginning of Overwatch, solidifying himself in the game and lore as an edgy shotgun-wielding villain shrouded in shadow. Throughout the history of Overwatch, Reaper has been used in various compositions that complement the use of his short-range high-output damage, which is a product of his signature double shotguns.
As the years have come and gone, many minor changes from the devs adjusted Reaper ever so slightly, with a few changing his playstyle entirely. Today, we’re going to look into just how this character has changed and if it was for the better, or for the worse.
This is the evolution of Reaper.

One random funfact about Reaper's development regarding his old soul orb passive was that stealing orbs would have directly negated Mercy's ability to rez them (back when she had the full 5-man rez). This was dropped before release bc that'd obviously make Reaper a total Mercy counter, but it's interesting to think had they committed to the idea of soul orb interactions how the game would be developed.
I don't think that concept is unbalanced.
Yes, it's specific to countering one hero, but it makes sense given how powerful her one ability (up to 5 man rez) was back in the day.
And I wouldn't even say it's a hard counter.
@@hugoclarke3284 I don't think it's necessarily broken either, although at the context of Overwatch's launch when there were only 2 other healing options (Lucio and Zen), being able to screw over the ult of the most accessible and arguably most potent healer options just by being around would've been really extreme.
@@hugoclarke3284 Yeah i was thinking that too. It was one of those "MUST HAVE" abilities, pretty much, so adding a "MUST HAVE" solution (while boring) would honesty be perfectly balanced...
And even then it all depends on how well (or poorly) the enemy is positioned. As you said, not even a hard counter.
@@Number9Robotic Not really. Being the only healer able to resurrect the entire team, THAT is extreme. Of course the counter has to be extreme to actually counter it.
My favorite character is the reaper guy. he is very powerfull. special move, honestly is one of the best in the game and so he comes equipped with these two revolvers and only takes about 3 or 4 shots to actually execute a kill so it comes really in handy specially when you come from the side.

My favourite DPS to play... generally I appreciate more mobility in my gameplay, but I have a soft spot for shotguns, and Reaper's versatility (ever tried bodyguarding your supports against some pesky dive DPS? That Genji will regret living once he gets demolished a few times) and high burst damage, together with the flanking possibilities he offers, feel so good!!

I was going to anyway, but when you placed reaper spinning over the beyblade ad, I smashed that Like Button. Awesome use of the skirmish/custom game to illustrate your narrative as well. One of my favorite e-sport content creators. God this hero is one of my least favorite to play against.

Always great to see another episode in this series. When I see the changes and why such as the after launch stuff, I find it hard to imagine Reaper having so many limitations. I definitely remember the nightmare that was 50% life steal lol When he and Mei were meta, I was abusing Brig to no end because those two were such a hassle.
I think reaper is in a great spot right now. The problem: the meta.
I think Reaper is at his best state, and I agree the Meta just has no place for him.

Details aside, I must say that replacing soul orbs with passive life steal was a genius balancing idea. He's meant to be a tank buster, so it makes total sense to let him sustain himself in combat by dealing big damage against tanks (big hitboxes, so perfect targets for weapons with high spread) with his shotguns instead of only getting a measly 50HP per kill and NOTHING while actually fighting.

My favorite Overwatch character, easily, both in terms of lore and gameplay, despite his simplicity. Reaper's gameplay leans so much on fundamentals (spacing, positioning, timing) that to do anything with him higher up you _have_ to understand the macro-game and there's no way around that. Not that I do, really. 😅 But I love the way he works anyway.

But kept playing Reaper as a Tankbuster, flanking CQ powerhouse and most notably his lore.
Reaper is the reason I stayed with Overwatch so props to Reyes

Man I remember just how one side the match between reaper and cassidy/ana was.
I preferred healing orb reaper :( I liked that you actually had to 'reap' the souls instead of just getting free lifesteal. You could also 'save up' and strategically walk into them when you were being attacked so I really liked the variety they added to his kit, now he just has generic lifesteal
But the usefulness of the soul orbs doesn't matter if reaper can't get the kill. And with all the raw healing added to the game (Ana, Moira, Baptiste), Reaper needs the sustainability in order to fill his role in being in the thick of the fight and invalidating Winston's existence just by standing near supports.
Yeah, I've been playing reaper since launch and I seriously liked Soul Orbs. But I rather keep the Lifesteal because tbh, it's really effective when you're 1v1 a tank like Roadhog. Higher chance of surviving poke damage and securing a kill.
@@wingedbluj1674 reaper without sustain would totally go against the purpose of his role being to try and catch the enemy with their pants down. Why even bother having me be able to teleport super sneakily and reach almost any area if I need someone on my ass to either come with me and give away my position or limit my fighting to be within their range or line of sight.

Tanks still feel like paper against him. Very annoying when, as Rein, I can't kill someone with half my health when I'm in my effective range.

Reaper lost a lot of his cool edge by having his extreme values rounded off. The shotties do too little damage, the lifesteal isn't meaningful. He used to be an absolute ripper up close and that was the whole point of him.
Making his shotguns ranged and lower damage was a bad decision. Reaper is arguably the easiest DPS to counter and completely nullify, so leaving him super viable as an up-close burst option would have been the right call.
Yeah, I’d trade any decent range for enough damage to feel really rewarded for getting close enough to literally touch the enemy without getting spotted.

I was a reaper player back in the day long ago before all the changes and one thing i found funny is that before the wraith form changes I thought that they should have made it a bit faster, able to be cancelled and reload your ammo, and sure enough

Wait what about 6man dive/zombiecomp/dive-rush/sombra-reaper? That's the most recent team comp variation where reaper gets played and it was pretty popular around about OWL 2020 playins/contenders 2020. It was never the 'meta' but I felt like it deserved a shout given how commonly used it often was

I reckon an Evolution of Bastion video would be super intresting. It seems like he's a hero that's gone through tons of diffrent comps (bunker, pirate ship, heck maybe even flank bastion) and it'd be really cool to look back on how teams have utilized his unique playstyle and how people see him overall

One of the best features that gets seriously overlooked is how you can not only dodge Dvas bomb with Wraith, but also with Shadow step. If you time it right.

Another way to put Reaper as a character is via the following voice line: “TOO EDGY FOR YOU!?!?” I also lost it when you put Reaper over the Beyblade ad xD
i like reaper, but wouldn't mind seeing a few more buffs or reworks to his kit to make him a bit better and less of a niche situation pick.
I think they should being back the soul absorbs, and to balance it, nerf his life steal back to 20%.
Squishy orbs would five him 25hp, tank souls would give him 50.

I though you would bring the fact that reaper was unplayable when tbe game released due to the fact that people were using Mcree all the time which dealt more damage in close range scenario and had a lot more range.
reaper was my favourite DPS character play, simply because he is easy to be effective with, my second favourite is Soldier 76 because of the easy-to-play aspect. these 2 characters can easily be played one-handed, which I am doing. Although I do prefer tanking, my favourite character is Dva, because of Dva bombs are so satisfying when you team-kill with one, much like Reaper's ultimate.
His shadow step voice line might as well not exist when you're playing in gold. Just from my experience of watching my team get decimated by his death blossom

Same. She was in a very healthy spot up since the beginning of OW until late 2019 when she became meta in OWL / OG double shield (thanks to broken Sigma) then they proceeded to gut literally every aspect of her kit in the first 5 months of 2020 and she's been trash ever since lol. They gave her small band aid fixes later but didn't help the hero. Nobody dares to use her anymore in ranked because of how clunky and detrimental she feels to use. Devs were talking about a tank rework in the future but who knows.

I’ve loved queuing into quick play with and knowing if everything goes wrong I can just play reaper and still have fun. Very independent and can reach just about any location totally unseen. Once they let you cancel wraith form it became so easy to just trick people and make them waste their best ability or reload. Making a hog waste their hook in a panic and immediately panic harder when they realized you baited them into wasting their only advantage, just so you could get a full reload will always be hilarious to me.

I have grown to hate reaper so much, especially with his life steal. As a main tank player, it always sucks when, after a few minutes of popping off to begin the match, the enemy team just switches to reaper and makes the game 10x harder.
I'm guessing you already tried asking your team to switch to characters like Pharah, Widow, Ashe, or Hanzo? Those guys straight up deny Reaper's game plan.
You should be happy they switched to reaper, it just makes winning a whole lot easier. The only tank that actually gets fucked on by reaper is Winston and maybe hog. Reaper is just incredibly weak and easy to play against you just have to keep tabs on him.

Giving a character, who loves to be in your face, a tool that grants invulnerability AND a movement speed boost is kinda crazy.
Nah he's ass and he was ass for most of the game, except for the 50% lifesteal buff and maybe Beyblade

In Overwatch 2 they dropped his damage to less than in his "more accuracy less damage" patch AND dropped his accuracy to what it was before... I really hope that when I get to play OW2 I will not see my main becoming trash, but I am afraid.

I main this guy literally just to fuck on people even if they go a shit ton of counters. Nothing quite like talking shit to a comp of DVA, Hog, Mei, Cassandra, Ana, and Brig after being on fire all game.

Blizz made him according to league wants - picking up health ....reaps wasnt what pros wanted or shareholders... They found out we can have 5 sec less servertime and in the end thats billions to us .Hope you now are happy with the games state according to wishes

Complain all you want but beyblade is definitely funnier than Goats or Double Shield ever was. It was peak OW gameplay and way better than what we see now. Every single teammate had a purpose and even tho reaper was the main focus, he needed help from his teammates to get value
Reaper is garbage, there's no real nice way to say it.
He's a close range hero without solid tools to get in close, he's only somewhat viable due to his heal by dealing damage and with the right comp to make up for his weaknesses. Otherwise, his shadowstep is so obvious I'm shocked people do not see it coming, and wraith form is just a gimmick that's not really fun to use or play against. It only exists to give him some kind of defense against CC.
Ideally he should have some kind of stealth option to replace Shadowstep, I'm thinking he turns into a shadow and move along the ground. Making his collision box smaller, so he can go through small areas that nobody else can access, but also makes him invisible like Sombra is.
Give him his souls back and give him some kind of weaker DM that sucks in souls from far away and allows him to eat CC like Flash Bang.
