  • In this video I discuss the results of new study of mine just published in Aging Biology, entitled: ‘When a calorie is not a calorie: metabolic effects of intermittent fasting in humans’.
    I know many people will be disappointed by these findings but data are data, the rest is wishful thinking that sometimes can be transformed into blinded uncritical faith:

    I read "The Manual of Healthy Longevity & Wellbeing" today. It was a very good book for me, as it is clear, easy to understand, and I was able to start to use the information immediately, to make better informed choices. The recipe section has beautifully photographed delicious looking dishes the recipes I look forward to trying. Thanks Dr. Fontana for producing a practical manual I will utilize as a solid general framework for many, many lifestyle choices from now on.

    Hello prof Fontana, in another video (about the difference between mice and human metabolism) you said that an effective strategy might be (yet to be proven) a 3 days eat, 3 days fast regimen, but you didn't go into the details, since this regimen is impractical. Could you please make a video and elaborate about it and tell us why it could be beneficial? Thanks a lot!

    Prof. Fontana, I also believe quality matters. What would be the outcome combining IF and good quality food? And on athletes would IF put additional stress in the body? Thanks

      We don’t know. A study must be conducted to answer your question

    • @diegomaicu

      Many studies assess how important is to correctly time the nutrients needed in order to perform and recover from P.E. IMHO, IF puts additional stress on a matter that is already complicated enough and further widens the gap between a healthy diet and the social/hedonistic aspect of eating.

    congratulations on your new book, sir! i've read "the path to longevity", but can't wait for the new one.
    i wonder if you have some thoughts on the japanese running style called "niko niko" or "slow jogging", invented by prof tanaka from japan.
    i also wonder if you have a pesonal opinion about mr. longo's fast mimicking diet. i hope i'm not crossing any line with this.
    again, thank you very much for your work !
    i wish you a happy new year and best of luck !

      I could be mistaken but I believe niko niko jogging would likely put your heart rate in zone 2, which is actually where the majority of training of elite endurance athletes falls (seems counterintuitive). Lots of videos on RUclips about the health benefits of zone 2.

    Maybe the 2:5 diet would give better results than the 5:2 or 4:3 diet? Excited to read the book when it comes out

    • @LuigiFontanaMDPhD
      @LuigiFontanaMDPhD  Год назад

      This is not the point! 2:5 is impossible to follow and would lead to malnutrition.

    Grazie Professore! Tutto molto interessante, in sintesi il digiuno 5:2 fa dimagrire ma non apporta benefici in termini di salute e longevità se non è supportato da un alimentazione sana! Giusto? Spero di aver capito bene purtroppo non sono brava con l'inglese.😅

    Should those of us who still have weight to lose then aim for a daily moderate calorie restriction, or is it still recommended to have a couple days of lower calorie non-starchy vegetables as long as we are following a healthy diet the rest of the week as well?

    • @ukulelespacestation1562
      @ukulelespacestation1562 Год назад +1

      Okay, I just scanned the paper, and it sounds like the answer is maybe "more research needed." From just a practical viewpoint, I think I am more successful with moderate daily restriction, partially because it makes it easier for me to focus on eating healthy most of the time rather than thinking it's okay to eat some junk food today since I fasted yesterday....

    • @LuigiFontanaMDPhD
      @LuigiFontanaMDPhD  Год назад +2

      Yes, you are correct. Daily CR with excellent quality of food is best. Then, if you feel like, you can incorporate some fasting. I do not have data yet, but possibly the best could be to fast for more than 1 day (2 or 3) every 2 months. But we need data before we can safely recommend this practice. I am working on it. Btw, healthy nutrition is just one of the pillars of health and longevity.

    Fasting in termini di autofagia? Credo che molti medici intendano il digiuno in questo senso piuttosto che in termini dimagrimento.

    • @LuigiFontanaMDPhD
      @LuigiFontanaMDPhD  Год назад +2

      Non ci sono dati nell’uomo sul ruolo del fasting nell’ indurre autofagia! Sono solo estrapolazioni di dati sul modello animale…..pure gossip

    Intermittent fasting, then, remains a good way to lose weight but offers fewer dimensions of benefits than calorie restriction with adequate nutrition.
