Pat Metheny cultivated so much talent always keeping his eyes, ears, and heart open. I had the pleasure to listen to PMG live many times. I remember in Berkeley, when he told a story about how a tape ended up in his hotel and he gave it a listen. Pat was astounded by the group....guitarist, piano, vocals, and percussion. Then...the story went on..it wasn't a band, but one young kid who put it all on a six track recorder. He then said, I'd like to introduce to you, our newest band member, Pedro Aznar. This was magic, and it wasn't the first time Pat did this kind of thing. I loved Lyle's playing. It's all so rich for the soul, and heartbreaking at the same time. Thanks Pat, Thanks Pedro, and thanks to Lyle. RIP.

2020 has not been the happiest of times and nothing was more devastating to me than hearing the news that Lyle had passed away. Whenever I listened to him play I was often taken to another realm...a heavenly place of beauty where every note moved me and struck a chord in my soul. You thought nothing could top that but then a vocalist like Pedro would sing...an angelic voice from on high. I'm deeply saddened but thankful that I still have his music to take me to that place!

Man growing up PMG was everything to me. And Lyle was everything Pat was , behind the scenes sort of in the background but always a giant. And now the music is gone or just not the same. I have sadness for that and the loss of Lyle.
And I cannot forget Pedro and his amazing tribute in this video. Pat recently said the secret to success is to play in a band where everyone is better than you. It's so obvious why Pedro was such a big part of PMG.

Aspiring musicians should emulate Lyle, he stated he wasn't a jazz musician, he never practiced scales or licks, just playing from the heart in reaction to what the song had to offer as a framework. You could do no better than pursue that for a lifetime to create something new, as he did so very, very often.

Como triste anécdota, decir que me enteré de su muerte hace tan solo una semana. Absolutamente NINGÚN medio de comunicación mayoritario ni agencia de noticias de España se hicieron eco de tan lamentable y triste pérdida. Un amigo me lo comentó por casualidad. Tuve la suerte de ver al Pat Metheny Group 3 veces en Barcelona, mi ciudad natal, y, obviamente, Lyle Mays sobresalía. Su figura impresionaba dentro de su equipo de sintetizadores que lo rodeaban junto con el piano clásico de rigor. PMG no hubiera sido lo mismo sin sus paisajes coloridos de trasfondo. Era una parte esencial del sonido PMG tan característico que nos cautivó y enamoró a muchos. Pedro, Thank you… Beautiful! Not long after Lyle’s passing, I lost a dear friend and fellow musician to COVID-19. I struggle to this day with these losses. They both left us with great music to remember them by. I am thankful for this.

Como triste anécdota, decir que me enteré de su muerte hace tan solo una semana. Absolutamente NINGÚN medio de comunicación mayoritario ni agencia de noticias de España se hicieron eco de tan lamentable y triste pérdida. Un amigo me lo comentó por casualidad.
Tuve la suerte de ver al Pat Metheny Group 3 veces en Barcelona, mi ciudad natal, y, obviamente, Lyle Mays sobresalía. Su figura impresionaba dentro de su equipo de sintetizadores que lo rodeaban junto con el piano clásico de rigor. PMG no hubiera sido lo mismo sin sus paisajes coloridos de trasfondo. Era una parte esencial del sonido PMG tan característico que nos cautivó y enamoró a muchos.
Sin alargarme más, decir que tuve el privilegio de ver a Pedro en el año 2006 en el “Festival de Música Viva de Vic” donde precisamente, junto con otros temas preciosos, nos brindó con la interpretación de “Mas allá/Beyond”. Piel de gallina. Gracias, Pedro. E infinitas gracias, Lyle. DEP🙏.

As I listened, just wanted to cry as the the waves grew bigger and more powerful in my heart remembering this song back in the day and now it's offering in remembrance to Lyle. Completely emotionally overwhelming. Muchas gracias para su dedicacion y amor para Lyle y los memories historias. Steve

Pedro, Thank you… Beautiful! Not long after Lyle’s passing, I lost a dear friend and fellow musician to COVID-19. I struggle to this day with these losses. They both left us with great music to remember them by. I am thankful for this.
Don’t know why I did not see this earlier. Pedro Aznar is who i define in the PMG music.

Sigo sin entender por qué las mejores personas de este planeta son eliminadas tan pronto, como si la genialidad se interpusiera en el camino de cualquiera? ¡Y tampoco entiendo por qué algunos músicos están tan infravalorados... nuestro Pat no sería la persona que era ahora sin Lyle. Así que todavía siento el dolor que Pedro también está sintiendo aquí y refleja tan fantásticamente hasta los huesos! Gracias!
