  • Lyle Mays and friends explore music based on physics equations, Feynman's speech patterns and more, using improvisation, algorithmic composition, live video mixing, and a custom designed linked laptop network.
Lyle Mays has been an integral part of the Pat Metheny Group since its inception in 1977, and has co-written much of the consistently engaging music for the multi-Grammy-winning group's albums. Lyle's sense of melody, crystal clear virtuosity and almost cinematic scope of orchestration has clearly distinguished the group's sound. Born into a musical family in Wausaukee, Wisconsin, in 1953, he was always encouraged to explore new forms of expression. As a teenager, Lyle attended jazz summer camps and studied with such talents as Rich Matteson and Marian McPartland. He then studied composition and arrangement at North Texas State University before touring with Woody Herman's Thundering Herd. While appearing at the 1975 Wichita Jazz Festival, Lyle met twenty-year-old guitarist Pat Metheny, and the two formed a musical alliance that has proven to be among the most artistically successful of the past three-plus decades.
Performers include: Jimmy Branly (drums), Rich Breen (audio engineer), Jon 9 (visualization), Andrew Pask (woodwinds), Bob Rice (guitar and digital sounds), and Tom Warrington (bass). Bios of these performers: tedxcaltech.com...
About TEDx, x = independently organized event: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Feeling depressed that I will never get to see another PMG concert with Lyle gone. Saw them 4 different times. Enjoyed each one. I was in L.A. on business in 97 and had previously gotten tix for show in Seattle since I'm in NW. Drove all the way from L.A to Seattle to see it. Did not want to waste my tix. Stressful to drive that distance, but enjoyable to hear music I love.

It was 1978 when as a young music student, I first heard Lyle Mays play piano and keyboards with the Pat Metheny Group in concert on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit. I was astonished! He immediately became my favorite pianist of all time, and has remained so to this day.
His composing, arranging and piano/keyboard playing combined melodic sensitivity, harmonic richness, rhythmic diversity, and a remarkably fluid technique, all firmly rooted in both classical and jazz musical traditions . . . are entirely innovative.
While I never met him, I read many of his interviews and watched hundreds of his videos and remain awestruck by the modesty and humility of someone with the genius to evoke such thought, emotion and tranquility through his own music . . . music so complete in its usage of nearly the entire spectrum of compositional and improvisational elements available to musicians.
I loved and admired both Lyle's solo work and his best known collaborative work with the great jazz guitarist, Pat Metheny, beginning in 1974. Their final collaboration as the Pat Metheny Group was in 2005.
Since then, I, along with millions of other fans all over the world have longed for a PMG reunion, but unfortunately with today's news, we have already enjoyed our final "Pat Metheny Group" recording, which makes me quite sad.
But what a profoundly beautiful and soulful musical legacy he left.

I had the pleasure and good fortune to work this Ted x event as part of the Cal Tech video production crew that was recording the event. Lyle Mays and friends were the intermission musical act. However, in my humble opinion, they should have made Lyle Mays and friends the headliner a left the other speakers for the intermission.
I was floored when I discovered he was the musical act. WHAT!?! I get to see one of my favorite musical artists and get paid as well? It was amazing as you can see from this video.
I got to meet Lyle after their performance as he and the band were hanging out behind the auditorium. I was at a loss for words but spoke with him for a short time about some of my favorite Pat Metheny Group albums and their motivation for the album 'We Live Here', which to me sounded like none of their other albums, but still touched, inspired and fed me as a musician. Lyle's dynamic playing is what distinguishes him from most other pianists. Jazzers seem to forget at times that there is more than forte or piano that you actually can mix these within parts which are mainly forte or mainly piano. Dynamic is one subtle, important and sadly very neglected musical dimension in jazz. Everybody goes crazy for fast lines and big chords with lots of options...

My Lord, what is the name of that last composition that they played. Just incredible. You could see the joy in Lyle's face as they were all cooking. It was just perfect. God I miss this man!

RIP Lyle. One of most underappreciated piano players.
Personal note: someone, who - along with Pat Metheny and Chick Corea - pushed me over the edge to the realm of jazz.

wouldnt that be wonderful..I think in my heart and soul that it was God that brought it togeather, so us listeners, among others could get a glimpse of the heavenlies..He is blessed, and we to have been to experience a very clean and real talent brought from above..

I searched Lyle up to see what h'es been up to and wasn't disappointed. "As Falls Wichita" is one of my all time favorite tunes, evan after all these years. He is a tremendous talent and it's good to see he's still out there, pushing the boundaries and making unforgettable music. Best to him and his colleagues.

Lyle's playing is pure understated class. A very modest but very, very good player.

This was really an incredible piece of music. whole band was great, drummer especially so, Lyle Mays will be sorely missed, he was a unique instrumentalist/composer, arranger. It was a joy to see him get totally into it, having real fun with this performance.

A sublime chromatic approach to music. Where melody is influenced by the will of the players. Synapse reaction is what comes to mind.
