This is great I'm one of the few Americans that actually get the whole Kim Mitchell and Max Webster thing I've seen Kim in concert many times I discovered Max Webster right as they were breaking up they are still one of my favorite bands and it's a shame that Kim never received much recognition outside of Canada he is such a Canadian treasure
No kidding! He hosts or has hosted a radio show in Toronto for years and no surprise is good friends with Alex and Geddy from RUSH. I didn't realize he was so good on guitar, and this song is so well crafted, my bad for figuring this out after all of this time!
Oh my god this brings back some memories. Max Webster were the very first rock band I saw live. They supported Rush back in 1979 during a UK tour. I was 16 at the time and had discovered metal/rock/prog etc only a couple of years previously. At the time I wasn't too sure of MW and was looking forward to hearing Rush more than anything. I liked MW and still do but I can never say I loved their music.
Another Toronto band in that crucible is FM, their record Black Noise is something to hear, they opened for Rush too. Great band, excellent musicianship as a prog rock band.
This is the first album I ever bought ( A Million Vacations ) I still listen to it all the time. Back in time we go, back to an age when bands were judged on talent rather than appearance.
COMPLETELY AGREED!!!!! Shit; not only do the members of Rush (the tourm8 buddies of Max Webster) know Kim's talent. So does IAN THOMAS (Kim actually contributed 2 Ian's 1975 hit "Liars"). Though I'm from Detroit, MI (a stone's throw away from Windsor), I pledge my musical allegiance 2 CANADA (Ian Thomas & Kim Mitchell primarily lead the way).
+Caleb Bartlett You need to give Universal Juveniles, High Class in Borrowed Shoes and Live: Magnetic Air a listen. Kim, in my mind, was one of the original "shredders'
I went to the Rockin Ambleside in North Van in 2018 mostly old Canadian bands for 3 days and Kim Mitchell was the best by a long shot he killed it on a saturday night!
When I left my home in Indiana (leaving everything and everyone I ever knew) in 81, to move to California this song was very important to me.... Cool to hear it again.
+Luddited No I didn't see that show sadly. I was always, and still am a big fan of Canadian bands. Saw Loverboy around the same time and they were terrific too.
Absolutely! Back in the day I was a huge fan of Max Webster and Rush. Today I can only listen to Max with pleasure. I think it's the quirky inventiveness that stills appeals to me.
Back when..... I was fortunate enough to see this band live many times at our high schools concerts. Also was lucky enough to catch them at Maple Leaf gardens on new years eve. Still have the two ticket stubs from that concert. What a great time to be a teenager and grow up in the 70s.
oh oh,incredible, I`m a big rush and max webster fan since 1980 and this video is a surprise for me, thank`s thank`s so much......my fav music!!! santy from Spain.
Fantastic to see watch this, never knew they performed on TTP! Ran into Kim a few weeks back at one of Toronto's premier guitar shops, he was sitting down to an interview with another Toronto music icon David Wilcox
+Slice Aj No, you aren't, but you are a very rare commodity! It warms my heart to know there are young people who aren't all caught up in the whole "hip hop" Justin Bieber bubblegum music fad that has soiled the airwaves these past few years! keep on expanding your horizons Aj, there are tons and tons of great bands out there to get into!
AWESOME... Max Webster Rocks... Kim Mitchell was born in a town called Sarnia, ON, CANADA... About two hours away from my hometown... I love this band... Rock on dude!
Apparently... This was the Very First LIVE SONG performed at Detroit's JOE LOUIS ARENA as MAX WEBSTER opened up for RUSH, which were the first musical concert scheduled for this brand spanking new NHL Hockey Facility... What an Amazing Honour, EH? WILD!!!! Holy Cannoli Canuck Heads! Canadians opening up in the "USA's Hockey Town"...
I was 18 when I saw this on TOTP (poor old Peter Powell, nobody told him Max Webster wasn't the band leader! - he'd have probably also asked Roger Waters "by the way, which one's pink?")...I was that impressed, I tried to track down the album but there were distribution problems with the record company and for a while nobody could buy it anywhere in the UK...as a result the ticket sales for gigs were down and the execs pulled the plug on further tours. Criminal....a band as good as this should have been massive! I did get to see them live, a smallish venue, too, the Marquee in Wardour St, London. I stood right at the front about 3 feet from Kim and, as a fledgling guitarist, stood there in awe (well who wouldn't!?). God I miss those days.... Thankfully, even 40 years on I'm still a pro gigging guitarist - thanks guys for the inspiration! p.s. Beyond the Moon from Mutiny is probably one of the best rock songs ever written....musically, that is, the lyrics are nuts!
As a Canuck I luckily saw Max many times - I only got to the Marquee once in my life (Terra Nova - Manfred Mann survivors) - the two together would have been overwhelming - so glad you got to see them - we will never see their like again - such a great band that never got what they deserved.
I saw the same tour in North Bay, Ont. and the way he opened with the drums in the dark, then the spot light on each drummer was so cool, the whole house screamed. Awesome
What a strange arrangement style, love the "happiness" part... definitely one of Canada's most underrated bands. Having discovered MW just recently, I find them much more exciting than Saga or Triumph. They used to tour with Rush a lot in the early days.
Paul Gilbert has stated many times Kim Mitchell was one of his most influential guitar players. Yet most people outside of Canada have never heard of him.
I got to see him live a few times in the past few years... AND *SHIT* the guy is still on fire. Never quite heard a solo that crazy since him and Steve Vai
Im from the states...and found out about Kim essentially thru the barenaked ladies...when they had him play the solo on the song wind it up from their barenaked ladies are me album in 06
I think that, being from Minnesota, my local stations have always played a bit more of the Canadian stuff than other places. Or maybe it was just my older sisters' collections. :)
Kim comes from my home town. In fact, before he moved away to Toronto, he lived in the same neighbourhood that one of my uncles still lives in. My parents bought a house in that neighbourhood although we didn't move in until quite some time after Kim had moved away. About 20 years ago, I met Paul Kersey, one of the former drummers for Max Webster. I met him at one of my other uncles around Christmastime. Nice guy, although he made it plain that he didn't like Kim much.
I love listening to Kim Mitchell every weekday at 2PM on Q 107.1 in Toronto. especially his personal solo's to old time greats, and his humor is awesome too.
I went to buy some cds today and got there greatest hits cd for 8 bucks what a bloody steal!!! All music stores ever have though is greatest hits cds of older bands. So you can never find all of there songs its a shame.
They were part of the New Wave movement and were very talented and creative. Would have been interesting to see where they would have gone had they stayed together. Kim Mitchell's solo career was very commercialized in comparison. Max Webster was on the path to becoming something great.
My dad and some of his friends were sitting at Uncle Sam's in Niagara Falls back in the day and Kim Mitchell hung out with them, already hammered, but my dad said he was amazed that he got on the stage after that and put on a hell of a show.
It was back in 74 when I immigrate to Canada and 1975 when I had the opportunity to 'feel' the power of Max Webster at the T.O City Hall bands stage... Kim Mitchel still remains at the top of my Canadian bands list among Nazareth, Triumph, Sass Jordan and Lee Aaron
I'm amazed, I didn't know the Websters had played on Top of the Pops. Then again, in those days I wasn't watching it too often....... happy days, i saw them supporting Rush too, what a great band
i know it's about the music 'dude', that's why i logged onto the video, i'm just responding as to why they weren't the huge hit that some people thought they should have been, but believe me, i enjoy my max webster going on 30 years now
Hmm, Grade 10, Blakelock High School, October 1978. These guys were great live. Sat next to Kim Mitchell at a The Cars concert in '87 too. Great concerts back in the day.
Max mebster is great...they used to played Niagara all the time back in the day at uncle Sam's..so did Rush and goddo...great times back then...ain't like that no more...would be nice to see a place where bands played every weekend...lol
So much talent in this band, it's ridiculous. Pye's lyrics, Kim's riffs and vocals, to Wilk's boards. Just awesome.
Saw Kim in Calgary a couple months back. He still kicks the shit out of this song even today - Bravo... what a true Canadian Rock Legend.
F*****g brilliant! So criminally underrated. They should have been huge. They deserved to be huge.
They are
Very underrated Canadian band.....way ahead of their time
This is great I'm one of the few Americans that actually get the whole Kim Mitchell and Max Webster thing I've seen Kim in concert many times I discovered Max Webster right as they were breaking up they are still one of my favorite bands and it's a shame that Kim never received much recognition outside of Canada he is such a Canadian treasure

I saw Max Webster in 1980. They opened for RUSH on "Moving Pictures Tour" in Dayton, Ohio. They kicked ass!
When I left my home state in 1981 I listened to Max Webster on the drive clear across the nation. They hold a pretty special place in my soul.
Rush and Max Webster influenced each other HEAVILY. It's mutual and pretty awesome to hear how the bands played off each other sonically.
Another Toronto band in that crucible is FM, their record Black Noise is something to hear, they opened for Rush too. Great band, excellent musicianship as a prog rock band.
Used to go see Max Webster open for Rush. Good shows.
Battlescar is the epic tune between Rush&Max Webster.
@@grahamclark7483It's Rush's BEST FUCKIN' SONG (though it's by Max Webster/Kim Mitchell).
Max was just too smart for the rest of the world. They didn't write songs about exes, it was intelligent and thought provoking.
Great tune after all these years 😺❤
You're right. I love his songs that I kept playing over and over again, Max sang wisely and beautiful songs. How are you doing Janet?
First saw them supporting rush on the hemispheres tour UK 1979 ... Superb band million vacations great album
"Hard and Heavy its the Max Webster band" lol :P
the good ole days! 2:59
This is the first album I ever bought ( A Million Vacations ) I still listen to it all the time. Back in time we go, back to an age when bands were judged on talent rather than appearance.
Saw max webster support rush at the Glasgow Apollo in the 70s, been a follower of kim mitchell ever since.
Ditto, except in Birmingham. Great band and there was a free single in the Program. Who knows what happened to that flexi.
Saw Max Webster at Winterland open for 38 Special and Rush. Great band. Unique sound.
One of the most distinctive and Delightful. intros i've ever heard
Fantastic little treasure you have here, thanks!
Kim is a very underrated guitar player... he could actually really shred! He's an excellent player.
COMPLETELY AGREED!!!!! Shit; not only do the members of Rush (the tourm8 buddies of Max Webster) know Kim's talent. So does IAN THOMAS (Kim actually contributed 2 Ian's 1975 hit "Liars"). +Caleb Bartlett You need to give Universal Juveniles, High Class in Borrowed Shoes and Live: Magnetic Air a listen. Kim, in my mind, was one of the original "shredders'
should see him live - really awesome player
check youtube videos, he is awesome, better than most guitarist
yea check out Max Webster / Kim Mitchell live performances, his solos are insane
Not see this for absolutely decades. Saw them opening for Rush in London on the Hemispheres Tour in the late 1970s - brilliant.
+Luddited No I didn't see that show sadly. I was always, and still am a big fan of Canadian bands. Saw Loverboy around the same time and they were terrific too.
First discovered this guy around ‘82 when I heard the song “ Check” ( Max Webster) Been a fan ever since.
I grew up In Canada but now live in the UK so was happy to see Max make some progress over in Britain.
Absolutely! Back in the day I was a huge fan of Max Webster and Rush. Today I can only listen to Max with pleasure. I think it's the quirky inventiveness that stills appeals to me.

I do remember this on tv.What a talent Kim is.
I've seen Max Webster / Kim Mitchell 6 times - every show I've seen has been stellar! Always friggin' rockin'!!
I can listen to this track indefintely. Makes me happy!
