I don't think they are underrated, at least not in Canada. Everybody I speak with about Cdn music thinks the world of them. Nobody down here in the states ever heard of them, or Kim for that matter. When I introduce them, they are loved. I guess Max/Kim preferred to stay north with their marketing.
Got my introduction to Max Webster back in late 1970's, when friends and I attended a 4 bands for 5 bucks show here in St. Paul MN, Max was the unknown warm up band, still had Mike Tilka on bass, and TW on the keys. The other bands were in order, Starcastle, Styx, and Rush. Max Webster came and played at our highschool in 78'. Had all their albums and cassettes and played them at all house parties, field parties and trips to Mosport as well as Sandbanks. Kim’s a true Canadian rock legend! Way ahead of his time with his writing, arrangements, and sound. Max Webster was a staple for me in the late 70s/early 80s. Easily converted to Kim Mitchell when he went solo following the disbanding of MW. 👊🇨🇦
Such a great band. I'm from Buffalo NY & have seen Max Webster & Kim Mitchell solo many times & also met Kim great guy. I believe the keyboardist in this video Dave Stone did a short stint in Rainbow playing on the Long Live Rock & Roll album. Long Live Max....

1980 Barrie, saw the 'VERY BEST' of the 'Kim Mitchell/Max Webster" band era of Kim Mitchell AND COMPANY... Kim is a guitar genius. I went to his "Block Head" album release party. (A party held in a 3 story 'old style house' with only room to move (if someone else managed to move) no matter what floor you were on. Basement had 3 wash tubs filled with beer. I remember looking up at a taxi's roof headliner and saying, 'Oh what a party'. Over and over. Kim Mitchell deserves a huge applause from every Canadian.
My God, these guys are tremendous. This is the first time I've heard them...and I'm totally converted. They shoulda been Huge outside Canada. Must've been some Gig, these guys and Rush on the same night. Wow!
Max was on the same label as Rush (Anthem), so they used to tour together a lot. When I'd see them, I'd come away feeling that Max was the better band and should've been the headliner. However I do keep in mind that Rush was still in their growing/improving stage, while Max was at their peak.
Like a lot of people we saw Max Webster when they were support to Rush. What a superb gig. 2 bands for the price of one and later on I got one of the Kim Mitchell solo albums which is very good and has stood the test of time. Unlike a great deal of music.
God knows how this appeared on my feed. I saw Max Webster at the Hammersmith Odeon (UK) supporting Rush on their Hemispheres tour, (1979). As I recall they were very well received, which was unusual for support acts back then. I picked up a couple of albums (Magnetic Air and Hangover) as a result of seeing them. Thanks for uploading this.
Before this was a concert venue, I used to go to the Roxy which was a movie theatre. Saw Steve McQueen in Grand Prix there, when I was a kid. First saw Max Webster about ten years later at Blue Mountain in Collingwood with a high school crush named Helene. Magical. Great video of a great band at a great time!
They opened for Rush in 1976 just after they released 2112 in Ottawa along with Ian Thomas . Tickets were $ 5.75.... we were 10 rows up from the stage . Awesome freaken show ..
went into a Bar in Owen Sound one summer night in 1980 probably right around this time. Sat at a table and ordered some beers with my buddies. These guys got up from a table next to us, got up on stage and started playing!! We were all totally blown away because kim had been sitting with his back to us and well didnt recognize the other band members back then. There was hardly anybody there and no sign out front who was playing that night. Apparently they where doing a little tour around cottage country. That was a pretty epic night !
My dad has a very similar story at a place called Uncle Sam's in Niagara Falls. Kim actually chilled at their table and knocked a few back before getting on stage! Completely shredded it according to dad.
I might have been there that night in Owen Sound. It was the last time I saw them live and at this point, it was Mitchell, McCracken, David Stone (keys), Mike Gingrich (bass) and Steve McMurrary (guitars).
I used to play this cassette all the time in my dorm room albeit too loud and too frequently. So a guy in the room next to me who had never heard of Max asks to borrow my tape. He then proceeds to play it loud and all the time. Contagious!
Wow, I love old progressive rock and didn't know about these guys until I was checking out. Kim Mitchell live video and saw some comments... these guys rock!
Saw Max open for Rush in Halifax in 79 or 80 and they just ripped up the joint..amazing LIVE band!!Mitchell blasting away on chet akins hollow body..unreal!!!!!!!!
I was always a fan (since 75) ... but about great bands existing... you need to get out there are lots... we just get too old to go ...and "Check it out" I'll give you one Canadian band to search for Bend Sinister (little different sound - but a great band). Cheers
Or even better at 29:30 ... the super fan is so excited that he has to fall to his knees and pound the floor in pure joy. Too cool ! Love that rock happiness of seeing a great band play live.
Monsters of Rock......and as great as they are, aKIMbo remains one of us, the working class of musicians, who has toured every nook and cranny of Canada, coast to coast and remains as modest and humble as any country farmer you'd meet on the street to this very day.......amazing !....one of the very best this country has to offer.
That is some smokin' HOT 🔥guitar playing! 😍 I can certainly hear an influence of Eric Johnson in there, and that is a VERY good thing. Thanks to the MIGHTY, R U S H for turning me onto these guys. 😊
I highly doubt Eric Johnson was an influence. He didn't start putting out albums until 1986. Kim Mitchell has his own style but I like Eric Johnson too.
Still remember watching this simulcast as a kid and being totally blown away. Max Webster (and Kim) changed my life. I watch this now and literally get choked up as the memories flood back. A little disappointed (okay, REALLY disappointed) that none of this concert (or ALL OF IT) wasn’t included in the recent Max Webster box set ‘The Party’. This was an awesome show and the band stepped on it hard that night. But I suppose you can’t make a world to order like a hotel services food. 🙂 Will always treasure Max Webster. Love ya Kim!!!! Thank you for the decades of sonically stellar music and guitar pyrotechnics. Check out the solo at 17:25 during In Context of the Moon - talk about the guitar being an extension of the man. Simply mind blowing.
They opened the "All The World's A Stage" at Massey Hall in '76. They were quite damn good - sorrily - something was lacking as far as big album sales and tours were concerned. Phenomenal musicians.

Like a lot of people we saw Max Webster when they were support to Rush. What a superb gig. 2 bands for the price of one and later on I got one of the Kim Mitchell solo albums which is very good and has stood the test of time. Unlike a great deal of music.
Lovin it from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦
love max love kim...Canadian thru the heart ...my kid years...
Love Magnetic Air! The live version of Paradise Skies is better than the studio version imo.
I saw Max Webster in Toronto in 1979 at Massey hall, they were great.
Max Webster was my very first concert ever. Hamilton Place such a long time ago.
Thanks for bringing back such awesome memories!!!!
They opened for Rush in 1976 just after they released 2112 in Ottawa along with Ian Thomas . Tickets were $ 5.75.... we were 10 rows up from the stage . Awesome freaken show ..
saw that tour at Massey Hall wish I still had my hair
went into a Bar in Owen Sound one summer night in 1980 probably right around this time.
That drummer is outstanding
Yup. Gary McCracken was a beast.
Fuckin Eh!!!!!! One of the bands that made high school in Ontario fun!!!
Thanks for posting!
What a blast from the past , I was lucky enough to see these outstanding musicians in my youth on three occasions.
I used to play this cassette all the time in my dorm room albeit too loud and too frequently. So a guy in the room next to me who had never heard of Max asks to borrow my tape. He then proceeds to play it loud and all the time. Contagious!
Songs from UNIVERSAL JUVENILE, my definitely most loved album of MAX WEBSTER: They never reached this level before and after. Great Band.
Just a thought...fans of Max Webster and Kim Mitchell still crave 'Blue River Liquor Shine, Oh War, Big Bad Summer and Let Go the Line' in the 2020's.
Wow, I love old progressive rock and didn't know about these guys until I was checking out. Kim Mitchell live video and saw some comments... these guys rock!
Welcome aboard ! Once you know this brilliant band existed, life is never quite the same.
Love Kims style.
Great band's like this barely exists anymore
No kidding, Johnny so true.
Cheers
There a millions of great bands out there, they are mouse click away on youtube.

Or even better at 29:30 ... the super fan is so excited that he has to fall to his knees and pound the floor in pure joy. Too cool ! Love that rock happiness of seeing a great band play live.
David Stone on Keyboards,Amazing Player,Played with Rainbow Ronnie James Dio era......Amazing show Thanks for posting,Blessings from Le Studio
This is absolute GOLD!!!
That is some smokin' HOT 🔥guitar playing! 😍
I can certainly hear an influence of Eric Johnson in there, and that is a VERY good thing.
Thanks to the MIGHTY, R U S H for turning me onto these guys. 😊
I highly doubt Eric Johnson was an influence. He didn't start putting out albums until 1986. Kim Mitchell has his own style but I like Eric Johnson too.
Max Webster was an awesome show to see in the 80s
Kim's guitars always sounded so good. Even way back then.
Will always treasure Max Webster. Love ya Kim!!!! Thank you for the decades of sonically stellar music and guitar pyrotechnics.
Check out the solo at 17:25 during In Context of the Moon -
talk about the guitar being an extension of the man. Simply mind blowing.
Good god, Comin off the Moon is insane!! That riff is just mind bending.
Incredible talent. Kim showing his guitar wizardry!
I got to see them open for Rush in March 1978. And as headliners a couple of years later. Both in Guelph Ontario.
They opened the "All The World's A Stage" at Massey Hall in '76. They were quite damn good - sorrily - something was lacking as far as big album sales and tours were concerned. Phenomenal musicians.
*The great Rush double live LP.

We saw Max Webster open for Rush a couple of times in Detroit and were instant fans. They were a perfect band for a Detroit crowd.
Match..what an opener....very much an under rated band...unique....funny...loaded with talent from all corners....real rockers....brings back so many fond memories .....
That crowd is typically outta control Ottawa style! Calm down kids..calm down..kidding aside THIS is a TREAT!The MIGHTY MAX! The greatest EVER!

The last time I saw Max Webster they opened up for Rush at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada for the All The World's A Stage show when Rush recorded their live album' I was there for their 2nd night of a 3rd night sold out show. Both bands were excellent and to this day I still love Max Webster. Thanks for posting.

I am Jealous. ATWAS is my all-time fav live record(s)... To see MW on the same bill would have been amazing!
Max Webster kudo’s. I was listening to them in 1980 when only 1 other guy was. It changed the bar to a new level for performance, execution and delivery along with learning to master the composition. TY. d
@RtaniDean once you know, you cannot unknow. They were the best.
Just attended Kim Mitchell concert in Windsor, Ontario this past weekend - He's still got it !! Great concert. Guitar maniac !!
I lived in Oshawa. Some high school buddies and I were hired as security for a Max Webster show at the Whitby ON. Auditorium in … ‘78 ? It was a hockey arena. We got to meet the band, watch the show and got paid $25 and a free T- shirt. Good times!
Loved these guys (and still do) way back when in high school in Ontario..all my buddies had all the Rush albums me , not even 1 but I had all the Max records 😉..Kim’s playing, phrasing, melodic sense, time, is friggin incredible,,top notch ..nice memories and good feelings listening to them again now after 40+ yrs..
So great to watch. In our 20's we planned our week on where Max Webster were playing. Quarts at the penthouse.🍻
The sound quality is awesome. I was surprised 😮
i consider this to be one of the greatest live concerts of all time. the energy, their playing, the sound. planets all seem to have aligned for this show in Barrie. wow.
Love Drive and Desire, one of my favorites since this record came out.
One of their best for sure.
