Thunder Bay ON. Anyway, wonderful. Now I will listen to the new album you have talked about. Age 72 now, I guess. I will be 63 soon. Aging can be emotional, but live on and enjoy. I am in Ottawa and hope to see you with a gig here again soon. ❤
This is one of the best interviews ever heard. I was always a fan of Kim, but knowing his story on his down period really uplifted me. A true gentleman!
It's so strange that Kim doesn't seem to like Kimosabe as that's one of my favourite Kim Mitchell albums. Maybe, its due to the period and his memories. I saw him in 1998 at Alice Fazooli's restaurant in Mississauga, Ontario. He had his then famous pink hat on and he was talking to a very nice looking brunette at the bar. I wanted to say hello, but it was his private time and after hearing this interview that would have been during those rough times, so I'm glad I didn't. Kim & Peter Fredette made some of the best music to come out of Canada. Peter Fredette doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's the other vocalist in "All We Are". Wonderful interview. Holy shit he drives 240 klicks per hour... wow
You're so right about Peter Fredette. I was part of the music scene in Ottawa in the 80s and 90s. Quite a lot of great local musicians made a lot of great music that went nowhere else.
Kim Mitchell, i always like what he does, great songs, super great musicianship in his band, as a drummer i always like the drummers he played with, and the production of his albums was always amazing. I am glad i have seen him twice, one in the mid 80s and another time 30 years later, and it was always great.
Met Kim at a low key concert location in Toronto when I was 15. Carole Pope and Rough Trade were on stage. Kim Signed my ticket. He was just a regular guy and I loved it.
Thank you. This was great. KIm reveling his deep thoughts and feelings like he's on a therapists couch. He's always been a hero of mine, and this showed he is not afraid to show his flaws and human side.
I live in the UK and have loved Kim's music from way back - he is a hero to me, yet hardly any of my friends have even heard of him! Just a great guy, great musician - all the guys he has worked with too
Good day, love Kim Mitchell's music! He is extremely amazing with his guitar as if he was born with it already in his hands! Keep on rockin' & movin', Kim Mitchell!! Cheers!!🥰🥰🦅🦅🦅🦅
Kimosabe is my favourite album. I had the pleasure of chatting with Kim in Orangeville after a gig about 15-16 yrs ago. I knew that Kimosabe was the product of a dark time in his life. I told him how much I loved the album and asked how many really great tunes are written when everything is going great and your life seems perfect?! Just saw him 10 August 2024 in Saskatoon. He still RAWKS!!!
The one thing no one EVER talks about with Kim Mitchell is his amazingly underrated guitar playing. you don't do session work without talent. I had the pleasure of photographing a corporate event where Bernie Labarge was playing (another unknown brilliant session player). The night was amazing and he just doesn't miss.
Saw Kim many times always good shows. Once in Welland Ontario after the show, i was waiting for friends, Kim came up and just stuck his hand out and greated me. Very nice guy.
Got to see Kim at Kingswood and saw him at the CNE at the areosmith after show party wen he gave a t shirt to some lucky fan at the party. Saw Kim hanging outside q107 at young and Dundas Square near the Hard Rock when he was a radio host Got to see Randy Bachman at the Hard Rock another great under rated Canadian. Thank you for your contributions..
One of the reasons he is the guitarist’s guitarist; he has amazingly fluid playing (in the 70’s few guys could play with the flow and speed he could) but he didn’t do the overboard ego-driven solos of other “guitar gods.” His solos were about the song; fit in perfect, not pointless showboating. Total class.
I worked on Kim’s Go For A Soda video. I came up with the in camera effects dubbed Soda Flex. It was a pretty challenging shoot requiring lots of issues with aligning the camera angles to pull off the stunts effect wise. Kin was incredibly kind , patient, encouraging and greatful. The video set me on a successful path to an exciting career. The memory of working with Kim has remained an inspiration to me, his encouragement was overwhelming and remains vivid.
Considering it was Pye Dubois who wrote all the Lyrics for Max Webster just maybe his contribution is being overlooked by the Canadian songwriters Hall.
I saw Kim Mitchell Band live in Belleville, ON at the Empire Theatre’s 25th Anniversary concert. They opened for Slash & the Conspirators featuring Myles Kennedy. Both bands crushed it that night! It was a super fun show to witness. Chris Sutherland and Brent Fitz, both drummers for Mitchell’s and Slash’s bands, are originally from Manitoba. Shoutout to those two guys for laying it down. Y’all are real pros. 🤘🏽
Glad you enjoyed the interview @stephentyler4352, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 ! Had Brent Fitz on the show as well - here's his show if you want to check it out: ruclips.net/video/qzD5CLElDpY/видео.html - Peace man!
I remember seeing Rush and Max Webster at Massey Hall on the Fly By Night and then 2112 Tours wish I still had hair like I did then. Toronto was the best in those days blasting the first Rush album in my bedroom "Finding My Way" we used to say roll out the carpet when Rush played cause they had this carpet they would put down on stage to make it more homie (so canadian). My all time favourite Max Webster song "Hangover" of course we could see them in the bars. RIP the Gasworks and Wayne Kramer.
Some terrific stories. I saw Max Webster open for Rush at Hammersmith Odeon on the Hemispheres tour (IIRC) in '79. They were well received which, at that time in the UK, was anything but assured for a support act. I picked up a couple of albums (Hangover and Live Magnetic Air) off the back of that performance. Never heard any more from them after that. Really interesting to learn how things panned out for Kim and will be checking out his solo catalogue.
Kim is a music/guitar genious. I noticed that as soon I came to Canada back in 1986. He had a big hit album that year. It was all over the waves and TV. Being from Yugoslavia I knew of and heard Brian Adams, Rush, Loverboy, Triumph, the Guess Who, to name a few, but never heard of him. As soon as I would point out Kim's greatness to my new Canadian friends they would tell me "Oh, you should hear his old band Max Webster, that was the real deal". Fast forward some 30 years I met him at a car wash(?!?) in Toronto. He asked me first something about my car(white BMW) while he was waiting for his to come out. When it came out it was also a white BMW.😂. I made sure to tell him how much admire him, that I play guitar too, that Ritchie Blackmore was my guitar hero to which he replayed: "Mine too!" at which point I melted. He worked as a DJ on the Toronto's biggest radio station for quite a few years...he was great, he has a great voice for radio too. Love the guy and wish him all the best. They don't make them like that anymore.😅
Why no mention of Pye Dubois? Was it something that Pye Stipulated? The man wrote the script for Kim. (Love Kim, but love the magic that both him and Pye made) Here’s my shoulder to put your chip on.
I have to agree. Max for me was better than Kim's solo stuff, with a couple exceptions. Peter Fredette kicked ass. I saw Fredette's Beatles tribute band Jude at the Laff in Ottawa. Bonus!
Had a funny moment with Kim Mitchell back in the 80s, I was in a band that was opening for Kim Mitchell band on the tour, I was playing some stuff just before Soundcheck on guitar checking my amps and Kim is standing there, he says you seem to be getting the sound you’re going for. I said, thanks, but later I started to think that was kind of a backhanded compliment, maybe he thinks my sound stinks but that’s the sound I’m going for and I’m getting, I don’t know I just found it funny later on, his band was great on the tour
This is such a great interview... it's more like a chat with a friend. I'll always be a big Max and Kim fan. I remember one Max show, I think it was a co-headlining tour with the Ian Thomas band - Saskatoon. I was prob. about 16 yrs. Old at the time. Leaning on the stage and checking out Kim's pedalboard before the show. So many memories go with Max and Kim music! One very special album to me is "Ain't Life Amazing". Around that time my Dad passed away, the girl I thought was the love of my life left and the company I worked for announced layoffs. It was all devastating. Kim's "Ain't Life..." album was in constant play in my car and I know it helped me get through it all! I'll always miss my Dad and thankful that he was my Dad, the girl's memory still haunts me, but I got a new job, moved on and eventually realized life really is amazing. Thx. Kim for all the music!
For me this very personal, I was just listening to Oh WAR!, your music is timeless I got the pleasure of seeing Max with RUSH, 2 times once in Guelf, and in my in Hamilton Ont, I got to see and hear Terry, Gary McCraken on drums plus NEIL I’m still not the same!!!, Hamilton’s concert was very intimate yet full on let it go, I still remember it vividly, so thank you, and Kim when you speak of Canadian Legends please include yourself, I always love Kim Mitchell because I had a brother who also got quite the Canadian status as a Lead guitar player his name was Brian Griffith, so I felt Kim’s guitar playing and have always appreciated his contribution to song writing, playing and performing this was beautiful hearing and sharing your life and career, I am very excited for your induction into the C.M.H.O.F., it’s very well deserved all the best to you and yours., excellent interview!
Thanks guys! Great interview. I have always been a big fan of Kim Mitchell. As a young budding guitarist growing up, he was one of my virtual teachers for sure. Met him at Long & McQuade music Bloor Street in Toronto a couple of years ago. We were wearing the same shirt lol. Nice guy. Good luck Joe and can't wait to hear the new album!
Amazing, thank you! and the Fbombs are ok , if you dealt with lose, you would feel the same. Great guy met him up north in Sault Ste.Maire took the time to talk to me like we were friends forever. Thanks again, it made my day. I hope everyone has an excellent day.
Another great interview Craig, thanks for this one! I grew up on Kim Mitchell's music here in Canada and he was one of the first guitar heroes I got to see live!
What a great interview. I remember seeing Kim in a park in Toronto in the late 80's and was really wanting to go over and say hi, but he was with his partner and kid and it just seem like it wouldn't be cool (the fellow Canadian kindness factor!). I really resonate with the challenge of getting through struggles and what it takes to get to the other side. I've always loved his music either with Max Webster or on his own, which I discovered around 1979, but to hear his story and the frank and unabashed discussion about it in this interview kicked my respect up for him exponentially. Yes, we should always be able to have conversations like that at any time. If I had the opportunity again I would still like to meet him and sit down and chat. Kudos on the interview!
Love Kim's music, it always reminds me of summers in Ontario. Ain't Life Amazing is one of my favorite songs. I totally related to Kimosabe, dark times for me too.
I first heard and became aware of Max Webster when they opened for Rush in Houston, TX. I have to say they were quirky & great and the guitar tone was really, really good. I think it was a 335 into a Hiwatt ? Maybe a Twin.. lol it was awhile ago! Me and my friends were thinking that they dressed kinda wild 😂!! I bought all their records after that night! Hello Kim! We love ya! Holdsworth was definitely frightening in his full glory 👍🏼
vidsforsquids Allan Holdsworth was a musical giant among men! John McLaughlin, apparently, told Allan once that he didn’t truly understand what Allan was doing. I was blessed to see-and meet-Allan, about five times, and it was always profound, so it was great to hear Kim express a similar experience!
That was Amazing! I was in Grade 9 @ a new High School in Fergus Ontario, Canada and Max Webster played in our auditorium It was awesome. Been a fan ever since. Great Interview. Thank-you to both parties great interview. PS/ My fav guitar is Blue.
in the mid-80's I lived in a new condo at King and Bathurst in Toronto - "The Summit". Big glass sunrooms - I looked down a couple of units and saw a long hair dude on a blue guitar wailing away in his sunroom looking at the CN Tower. figured this fellow to be KM - Canadian icon a few doors away.
I grew up in the Niagara area and Max did all the local clubs/ outdoor concerts. I believe that they recorded the crowd intro at Uncle Sam's in Niagara Falls the night I attended and yes...... we all sang "The cats in the bag, the neighbors holler.....etc, etc. One of the more inspiring guitarists of those days. there was always a Zappa-esque element to the tunes, probably inspired by Beefheart, as Kim mentions.
Always remember sitting in front of the door to get into the front row at the Humanities Theatre at University of Waterloo and Kim walked by and said hi.
I followed this man's incredible journey since the get go. Musical genius A to Z. Had the privilege and honor to have met him and his band mates. Super good dudes, very decent guys. All the best kim! Great interview Hombres!
Canada needs a Canadian classic rock show at Kee to Bala to get the oldies back together again post Covid. Mitchell with Alex and Geddy, Triumph, April Wine, David Wilcox, etc…
I'm from TO, as a fan of Max Webster we saw Rush as a friendly rival. In my opinion Max could have just as big, at the time it was success in the US, that Anthem and a lot of folks recognized to make Rush the more popular band. Max's early records are great! Great interview!
Have seen Kim play many times, mixed monitors for him a few time when he came east. True pro. An amazing player, and ALWAYS, has a band of amazing players with him.
First time seeing Max Webster was back in the fall of 1974. It was the common room at SENECA COLLEGE. First impression of the band was a mix of Frank Zappa / Captain Beefheart. Unique guitar style from Kim and a talented tight band. Seen Max Webster several times during the seventies. Great interview and thanks for sharing.
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar One question that wasn't asked is What was Kim's biggest regret? He has mentioned this one before. The story about him missing out on seeing Jimi Hendrix perform live, up close. Not sure if you know about this one.
Huge fan of Kim Mitchell. Great, great guitarist! Love his playing and love his sound. Influenced my playing during my days of gigging. Still listen to Max and Kim's solo works to this day. Another aspect I really liked was the humour they had in some of their tunes. Great stuff!

Wonderful interview with a one-of-a-kind, true original! I’ve been a fan since hearing Battlescar on the radio in Wichita, KS in-approximately-1981-82, on the fantastic-and now, extinct-KICT-95 FM. Naturally, I was a gigantic Rush fan, and knowing of Max’s existence, I was primed and ready to be a fan. Luckily, many years later, I went on a vacation to Victoria and Vancouver, Canada-in 1998, and was able to find CDs of the entire Max collection, plus a Kim solo album I didn’t have! Wonderful music-especially, Universal Juveniles and Kim’s first two solo albums. So great to hear such a complete history of his life! Great job and thanks for doing this!! 🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻
Good interview. Good musician! Fixed his Mac laptop many years ago. Didn’t actually meet him face to face but had several conversations over the phone. Nice guy!
Kim, my band "Arrival" opened for Max Webster in Nanaimo, BC in 1978 - we were blown away not only with the band (even before that gig), but how great you all were and your crew when it came time for our sound check. It was truly a memorable gig to this day, I believe promoted through Perriscope Productions. I'm guessing that gig convinced Perriscope folks that we could open for Tom Petty at the Commodore in Vancouver after that. Congratulations on your Hall of Fame induction!

Kim & Peter Fredette made some of the best music to come out of Canada. Peter Fredette doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's the other vocalist in "All We Are". Wonderful interview. Holy shit he drives 240 klicks per hour... wow
Thanks for your kind words @trenthogan4212 and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
You're so right about Peter Fredette.
I was part of the music scene in Ottawa in the 80s and 90s. Quite a lot of great local musicians made a lot of great music that went nowhere else.
Great interview. I have been a big fan growing up as a Canadian guitarist.
Kim Mitchell, i always like what he does, great songs, super great musicianship in his band, as a drummer i always like the drummers he played with, and the production of his albums was always amazing. I am glad i have seen him twice, one in the mid 80s and another time 30 years later, and it was always great.
Right on @pascaldeslongchampsmoncton1490, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
Met Kim at a low key concert location in Toronto when I was 15. Carole Pope and Rough Trade were on stage. Kim
Signed my ticket. He was just a regular guy and I loved it.
yes, very cool dude! thanks for listening...
Thank you. This was great. KIm reveling his deep thoughts and feelings like he's on a therapists couch. He's always been a hero of mine, and this showed he is not afraid to show his flaws and human side.
Thank you for listening UncleRemus! 🎉🔥😇 subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
I live in the UK and have loved Kim's music from way back - he is a hero to me, yet hardly any of my friends have even heard of him!
Just a great guy, great musician - all the guys he has worked with too
Thank you for listening Alan Levy! 🎉🔥😇
Brilliant and very underated Liverpool UK
Good day, love Kim Mitchell's music! He is extremely amazing with his guitar as if he was born with it already in his hands! Keep on rockin' & movin', Kim Mitchell!! Cheers!!🥰🥰🦅🦅🦅🦅
Glad you enjoyed the interview @cainrac, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Right on @curtishann9614, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
I was into a lot of jazz rock fusion in the late 70s and 1980s and I always dug Kim Mitchell's guitar playing. Plus, I think he has a great voice.
Thank you for listening @minkorrh! 🎉🔥😇
I've seen Kim Mitchell in concert last two years. I agree with you. Kim can shred but he has a fluid style, tasteful phrasing as well
We are going to see Kim at the Kee next week!! Can't wait
Kim probably the biggest influence on my playing. Went to school with Greg Wells. Solid partnership.
Saw Kim many times always good shows. Once in Welland Ontario after the show, i was waiting for friends, Kim came up and just stuck his hand out and greated me. Very nice guy.
Thanks @stevepaquette4534, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
@@stevepaquette4534 Atlas Hotel ? Played there numerous times ! Sang Happy Birthday to me 2 yrs in a row.
Serving the song, like Kim says, is totally the most important thing, and he's so good at it.
Sucked that Max Webster never got the recognition they deserved in the States.
Ah, maybe it's cooler that way.
Good guy Kim ... cool ..and continue well wishes to u and family

I do not know that there is anyone I respect more in Rock, than Kim Mitchell . I worked with him in the 90's and I learned
Thank you for listening @MoonbeameSmith! 🎉🔥😇
The first time I seen Kim was June 29 1975 at the Summer Gardens in Port Dover Ontario, when he was with Max Webster, and they opened for Rush
Kim is the man
He aiways struck me as a lively, lovely guy!
And Patio Lanterns and especially Easy to Tame (great song!) are terrific tunes.
I use to seen Max Webster and Rush all the time back in the 70s. Max Webster one of the most underrated bands. High class in borrowed shoe great LP
Great song too! I've won a lot of free beers betting people that they do not say " High class in borrowed shoes " once in the whole song!
played that sucker to death in growing up in Scarb ... she comes across like diamonds diamonds
Cool @halltrain1162 Glad you liked this and thanks for listening! 👂 🎶 🎸
Nice to hear a proper interview instead of the typical youtube 30 second snips. I grew up with Kim and MW, thanks...
Glad you enjoyed the interview Luiz de Jesus, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Just saw Kim recently in Buffalo (Tonawanda) and he still rocks it! Amazing to still be able to see him. This chat is amazing thanks!
Thanks for your kind words @johnking6970 and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
Considering it was Pye Dubois who wrote all the Lyrics for Max Webster just maybe his contribution is being overlooked by the Canadian songwriters Hall.
Agreed !
Kim is one of the most humble / modest music legends...
I do recall 'Maxx Webster' showing up in concert at my high school. I received their album 'Battlescar' for free. They were incredible!
Right on @yxmichaelxyyxmichaelxy3074, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
Right on @johnsmith7345, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
Rik Emmett's a nerd. Kim is badass. Great interview.
Thanks @dougbelford4796, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
Thank you for listening @mark140363! 🎉🔥😇
I followed Kim and Max Webster for years during my 20s and they always gave a great show
Love Kim and what he does
Best wishes
Thank you for listening @harryt988! 🎉🔥😇
Very cool, thanks for sharing that, @mickeystanic4750 🙌🏻 💥 🎉
Why no mention of Pye Dubois? Was it something that Pye Stipulated? The man wrote the script for Kim. (Love Kim, but love the magic that both him and Pye made)
Here’s my shoulder to put your chip on.
No Max Webster without Pye
Thanks @shanemcconnell1736, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
Very cool, thanks for sharing that, @1996KR 🙌🏻 💥 🎉
Thanks for your kind words @blainegriffith7119 and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
Thanks guys!
Rock on!
I’m an illustration graduate, I relate to creative people and your comment on creative people being a bit of a mess emotionally.
Thank you for listening @racheladkins6060! 🎉🔥😇
I seen Max Webster back in 77 I remember as I was underage and managed to get into the bar, great show and I still remember it today.
That is cool @darrylhubbard931! Thanks for listening 💥🎶🔥
Wow. I just found this interview. Fantastic. Kim Mitchell, you are one cool guy. Rick from Winnipeg.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing, thank you! and the Fbombs are ok , if you dealt with lose, you would feel the same. Great guy met him up north in Sault Ste.Maire took the time to talk to me like we were friends forever. Thanks again, it made my day. I hope everyone has an excellent day.

Thanks for the amazing music, Kim. It has been a privilege to follow your career and enjoy your music.
Thank you for listening @BTom16! 🎉🔥😇
Another great interview Craig, thanks for this one! I grew up on Kim Mitchell's music here in Canada and he was one of the first guitar heroes I got to see live!
Glad you enjoyed the interview Paul Aitken, and thanks for listening! 👍🏻🎶🎉
Kim is awesome. Love his music with Max Webster and Solo. Great live! Saw Kim many times. 🇨🇦
Right on @dalemcmillan7231, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
Very cool, thanks for sharing that, Andy Chevalier 🙌🏻 💥 🎉
Thanks vidsforsquids, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
vidsforsquids Allan Holdsworth was a musical giant among men! John McLaughlin, apparently, told Allan once that he didn’t truly understand what Allan was doing. I was blessed to see-and meet-Allan, about five times, and it was always profound, so it was great to hear Kim express a similar experience!
when i saw max back in 79 kim was using 2 fender twins then in 84 he had a jcm 800 this was in buff ny
That was Amazing! I was in Grade 9 @ a new High School in Fergus Ontario, Canada and Max Webster played in our auditorium It was awesome. Been a fan ever since. Great Interview. Thank-you to both parties great interview. PS/ My fav guitar is Blue.
Thanks for your kind words @foscam3767 and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
I lived in Elora for the summer of 1979. Good times...
in the mid-80's I lived in a new condo at King and Bathurst in Toronto - "The Summit". Big glass sunrooms - I looked down a couple of units and saw a long hair dude on a blue guitar wailing away in his sunroom looking at the CN Tower. figured this fellow to be KM - Canadian icon a few doors away.
Kim used to play our high school (and others) in Hamilton & area very early 70s. Always been one of my Faves! Rockland album was incredible!
Right on @johnorgan3, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
Glad you enjoyed the interview auddoc99, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Loved this. Kim is on the soundtrack to my life. Great stories. God speed to him.
Used to love ❤️ listening to Kim on Q107 especially when he plays his guitar like patio laterns live acoustically
the new album is great. Kim is a Treasure.
Glad you enjoyed the interview @cm9247, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !

Good Day. My Bass Player, who is Canadian, turned me on to Kim back in 1983. WoW. Loved Him.
Thank You for this post & Best Regards

Canada needs a Canadian classic rock show at Kee to Bala to get the oldies back together again post Covid. Mitchell with Alex and Geddy, Triumph, April Wine, David Wilcox, etc…
Yes, I agree RageMonkey - thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
I'm from TO, as a fan of Max Webster we saw Rush as a friendly rival. In my opinion Max could have just as big, at the time it was success in the US, that Anthem and a lot of folks recognized to make Rush the more popular band. Max's early records are great! Great interview!
Thank you for listening AlanM! 🎉🔥😇
Love Kim both his music and manors.
Yes, I agree @LostCaper - thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Have seen Kim play many times, mixed monitors for him a few time when he came east. True pro. An amazing player, and ALWAYS, has a band of amazing players with him.
i envy you my friend - never seen Kim play live and am unlikley to ever being in the UK
Glad you enjoyed the interview @walterpen371, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !

Hey, that's an achievement dude. The majority would sh*t themselves.
