- Kim Mitchell is a part of the DNA of Canadian music. The iconic rocker turns 70 on July 10 and he's celebrating by touring across Canada for his latest album, The Big Fantasize. Mitchell sat down for an interview with Tom Power to look back on his 50-year music career, from the founding of the band Max Webster in the 1970s, to why he sees playing live - at everywhere from amphitheatres to circus tents - as his "Rock N' Roll Duty."

The most underrated guitarist of all time.
Especially his lightning-fast fingerwork and before it's time creative genius when he wrote and recorded Universal Juveniles, EH?😮
Band in general. Increadable 📚💕💕💕
Agreed. The guy set a really high bar for himself
no thats alex lifeson. but kim is really good
Kim is a national Canadian treasure--and deserves WAY more recognition than he has. What a wonderful, humble guy. And one helluva guitar player / writer !
KIM Mitchell, thanks for hanging in there for 50 years of great music!
Man he is soooo underrated as an artist. Love this guy
Kim reflects the passion and love for his music that very few musicians reflect to their fans. He shows a true love for living his dream. THE BEST !
I saw Max Webster (Kim Mitchell) when I was a musician in the Air Force band in Omaha Nebraska around 1980. They opened up for Molly Hatchet (which sucked)Kim and the band just blew me away. I've been a fan ever since. I bought every album I could find. I also had a couple of friends in Canada that would send me anything new on CD. He should have been way more popular in the US than he was. So glad to hear you made a new album. Bill
I was working and living in Wyoming in the 80s, and seriously.....every time I cranked my Kim or Webster collection? I had to replace several of my CDs when I'd visit my hometown in Canada for vacation because they were blown away by his genius so I'd give them some. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Kim needs to write a book .He is a true Canadian treasure. I couldn’t imagine a world with Kim ,his music has been the background to our lives.
A great interview.
For me Kim you are a good singer and a great guitarist love all your career and still listening your musique and Watching your show on RUclips thanks to you
I absolutely love Kim Mitchell! I grew up in the 80s listening to Him in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦💗😎🔥!! I saw him live in Tweed Ont. & He has always been Awesome!! 70& Still Cool 😎🇨🇦
I'm a 63 year old dude from Toronto and I loved listening to Kim Mitchel with or without Max Webster along with Rush when I was a teenager in the 1970's
Kim is the world's most under rated musician/ songwriter ever. I own 100% of his music catalog from Max Webster on. & I'm American. 😃
Great interview; I learned a lot about this true musical icon & legend. ❤
@10:58 “I always look at myself as I’m the song’s roadie.” Brilliant. That’s the way I’ve always approached playing music, whether it’s mine, someone else in the band, or a cover. It makes for a great band dynamic too if we all can agree that the music is more important than any of us. Forward alignment principle?
Great show tonight at Rose Theatre Brampton. The crowd was 17 again. 😍
I was there wth friends, it was a really good show. Cheers from Georgetown.
Kim is a true legend!
Thanks Kim for all your great music. It’s great to see your in a happy place and are so down to earth still enjoying your music career
Kim's a great musician, he plays for the song. Great rhythm player and great soloist. He's a trooper!
Great taste !
Kim rocks. Our band was playing a corporate gig inside the Eaton Centre for a week in the early 00's when he was a DJ at that radio station. He'd stop by on his way to work, listen, and give a thumbs up. Honoured 👏
I met Kim when I was 17.. I worked across the street at a parking lot.. his wife worked across the street at bell.. great guy and great musician..
High School + Kim Mithcell = Me Thank you for Kim and your team for helping through those times.
Enjoyable interview but…Kim is so damn humble. Although I like some of his solo material, not nearly as much as his work with Max Webster. And he sure didn’t need songwriting advice from Rik Emmett whose music with Triumph is so derivative! Sure, it made Kim more accessible and gave him more commercial success, but what was lost was the outside-of-the-box thinking, guitar playing and quirkiness he displayed with Max’s music. On this alone he deserves all of the accolades he has received. Happy 70th, Kim!
My thoughts exactly.
Kim's solo stuff is great. Max Webster's stuff is exquisite.
What a great album and such an awesome guitar player and singer.
What a standup guy, it's nice to hear people who like to rock for admirable reasons. I can second that it is really important to have people in a band who can hang and shoot the breeze because most of the interaction isn't really music-related but doing mundane stuff. Then it doesn't become or feel like work.
I've seen Kim at so many high school shows, Maple Leaf Gardens, Had a few kind words before the Coney Hatch show on the Danforth, that sprung dance floor on Granville in Vancouver. Love ya Kim. You are the most original person I've ever met.
Thanks for all the great music Kim
Kim's music is timeless. Some 80's stuff didn't age well but I still love a bit of Kim.
I love Kim Mitchel and been rocking on to his music since my older brother showed me his music in 1981 I seen him in concerts twice and hope to see him again
Kim's such a great interview. Such cool stories!
What other rock guitar genius as well as creating some of the most diverse, innovative tunes and lyrics could be as laid-back and completely humble, (as a real Canadian should be)as Kim is? I believe it's the trademark of an authentic, truly gifted artist.
I got to interview him once when I was like 15, when Max played our high school. I asked him what Max Webster meant, and he said it's a form of French kissing.
The 2nd time I met him was at a bowling alley in Mississauga.
A Canadian treasure and from Sarnia Ontario…a legacy of great music, good times and memories. So many great Kee to Bala shows!!
His very first solo release was an EP with only five tunes, and insanely great, if anyone didn't know about it.
So cool! Happy Birthday Kim! And congrats on the induction! So many cool memories of you live man! I worked for Ray Young waaaaaay back when and was at all the shows you did for Young's Production. That's far enough back that Pete was wearing tights and a guitar instead of a bass lol. Eventually opened for you at a free show in Linday in 2007. Spent a day with you in Metalworks while you and Stu produced the Truthful Liars single. Always a great guy and a superb show! Kingston Grand Theatre... 12 Martin bass bins a side! Never forget that!
Thanks for being there for the music to manifest itself through 💜 Oh, and please don't ever stop playing "Here in my shoes" live. It shakes the earth!! It's my absolute favorite part of your live show!! Peace ✌
Enjoyed this interview, Miss the hair Kim but the heart is still there.
🎉Happy 70th !
One of the Best things that ever came out of Canada, always played with the best musicians he could find even the Pop stuff had teeth and hidden chops...and the B sides were always the best and sometimes overlooked "Called Off" "Caroline" so many others ...We are blessed to call you our OWN
Here in my shoes is still my favorite song.
I seen Kim Mitchell at the speakeasy Cafe in Peterborough Ontario Canada today he is so kind and can tell amazing stories about rocknroll
Kim thanks for the mention of Bruno, your sound man miss him alot! Kitchener Ontario misses him alot!
I still love the original Webster and Kim’s mini album (Miss Demeanor, Big Best Summer) a talented Canadian (along with Pye and Peter)
A lot of Canadians should know he is VERY POPULAR in Buffalo. He sells out in NY when he comes over.. I just saw him in North Tonawanda at the Riviera Theatre (he sold out two nights..). He used to play the Tralf too.
Met him in ‘78 on a BC ferry on the way to the first Canadian “MaxWebster/Ian Thomas Band” tour date in Nanaimo … I was in a band called Arrival and we were opening that date ‘cause Ian Thomas’s drummer was getting married and they were joining the tour the next night in Victoria … he and Gary McCracken (Max Webster drummer) were super nice and down to earth and ended up following us to the gig in Beban Park arena as they didn’t know where it was … pre cell-phone/GPS hahahaha
Looking forward to Kim attending Burlington's ' Sound of Music Festival 2024' tomorrow night 😊
The best!
100% Kim - Well said "Customer Service and Rock and Roll" - If anyone knows or has worked in customer service you hear the same customer issues concerns questions over and over so each customer needs to be treated like its your first interaction. So yes. Fans wants to hear the songs that afforded your lifestyle and we paid for that let's you tour and do what you love! A Canadian treasure this man is!
Whooshy Kim Love it
only 190 likes? Wow, crazy. Its a great interview.
Great interview with a stellar Canadian music legend icon.
For me Max Webster was unique and special and the songwriting was superior. That's what made Max special. It didn't have to be like the normal formula. That's why their live shows were fun and special. For me writing songs with a structure is good but doing stuff like Max Webster makes you special and unique not matter what genre your in. Great interview actually and Kim is a legend in all forms...guitarist and songwriter.
Those first two albums I really love - have been listening to "Shakin' Like a Human Being" steady the last few weeks - brings back so many memories for this drummer - "In My Shoes" is probably my favourite song of his next to "All We Are" - he comes across so incredibly humble in this interview and he's been so successfull - tells me a lot about him for sure!
Kim Mitchell = Underrated guitarist.
Just saw Kim in Brantford for canada day! Sass Jordan opened. Both sounded GREAT! Keep rocking out Kim
Follow Kim for years since Max his new album is great.Nice to see he is still recording new material ! BTW I did buy it ,support musicians
I saw him in high school, twice at Hamilton place and last night at Burlington Preforming Arts center he still got it.
I bought Magnetic Air when I was a schoolkid. I'm 56 now. Love from UK
Saw the 5 live Max Webster shows including the tour this album was recorded on. They sounded exactly like the LP. Fun act. So underrated
Love the tune The Best I Never Had from his new cd, very cool, haunting, great chord progression. Saw Max Webster open for Rush in 1976 in Vancouver
Kim is the man
Welcome back
No questions about Kim's career as a successful Toronto DJ at rock station Q107. What the hey?
A fifty year career in music is a long time
When I was much younger I heard Kim lived in Collingwood (when I lived in Owen sound). I wanted to learn "go for a soda" on guitar so bad, I wondered how crazy it would be if I could convince Kim to teach me how to play it. I kinda think he would...he just seems like a salt of the earth people person.
Rockland is my favorite!
We saw Max Webster ( when they reunited ) in Wasaga Beach Ontario ⛱️
Dennis Deyoung, what a goofball!
Kim deserves The Order of Canada.
Happy Birthday
Greg actually commented 6 yrs ago on the Kee To Bala concert video here: ruclips.net/video/QotH-UTKutw/видео.html
I still go back and watch the beginning of Rockland where he gives Greg a moment in the spotlight. I wish I'd been old enough to see that live. The 3 drummer intro is something else!
Anyway, thanks Kim for all your great music. PS. I still think Kimosabe is a great album!
He seems to Turn Back Time!
Has SO MANY INCREDIBLE songs with GREAT MUSICIANS supporting that we simply Cannot Afford to Miss this current Tour!
Hopefully Canadians will FINALLY APPRECIATE this Home-Grown LEGEND!!!
Radio programmers outside of Canada should be Especially Encouraged to Check Out His LIVE SHOWS too, don't you Agree?
Curious...

Met him in Beaton ont we smoked a Jay in my 58 studebaker b4 the show
"The theory of forward alignment" km
Wierd.
One of the Best ways to dismiss bias is calling it abnormal. That doesn't make it a lie😅😅😅
Selamat malam sobat
Is Blue up for adoption?
Not enough recognition for Max Webster or Kim. If there was a legitimate rock hall of fame they’d be in years ago.
