Same here. And it's like high stakes gambling with the treatments. At best it buys them a few years. At worst they suffer from the treatments and die even sooner sometimes because the treatments weaken them. The emotional costs is something you will get past. The financial could last forever. You could lose your home, your savings etc.
This is pretty unique to the US in the civilized world. The intelligent countries have universal healthcare. In Canada he would be diagnosed and then get treatments without worrying about losing everything he'd worked all his life for. No need to "break bad"

@@baburao87 That's true, but Breaking Bad makes it pretty clear that Walt had other, more legitimate avenues of treatment (like the one next episode) that he explicitly rejects, because his ego will only allow the money to come from HIM. HE has to the be the originator, and HE has to the be savior of his family. No one else. Not friends, not charity, no one but Walter White. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Universal Health Care and think it would have taken some of the pressure off. But the seeds of Heisenberg were always in Walter White. The series also makes clear that he got a more negative diagnosis from a cheaper doctor, but once he could afford the best, his chances were much better. Would he really have gotten that chance in, say, the Canadian system? Would it have paid for it?

Sadly, this is a reality many uninsured families face when fighting a cancer diagnosis.
Without a radical influx of money, their options are extremely limited.

Walter has insurance and could get first-rate cancer treatment with no expense to his family other than the co-pays and deductibles. And frankly, public employees like Walter typically have great insurance that could likely pay for whatever specialist he wanted.
You don’t get to devastate hundreds of lives with a ruinous, highly addictive drug to pay for some uber expensive specialist when you’re no doubt going to die anyway. Walter has other perfectly good options for treatment.

15 yrs ago I met & married a widower with 2 kids. His late wife had passed 5 years prior; the kids were 7 & 2 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. It had spread to several places, but the tumors in her liver= death sentence. My husband has been combat deployed 4X. He told me that sitting down to tell the kids & family was the worst, scariest, most heart-wrenching thing he's ever experienced.
His wife lived for 1 year, alternating between positivity, depression, fear, joy, & business as usual day to day. 4 months after diagnosis she was too sick to do anything. The final 8 months was a gradual fade out. Very painful. The good news is that the kids accepted me right away; the youngest barely remembered her mom & was desperate for a woman in her life. The eldest took a bit longer to come around but we've been a solid, loving, laughing family since the beginning. They're my kids now and I'm their mom. That's it! We celebrate their mom; she gave me the greatest gifts in the world. Both kids found BB painful to watch at times but ultimately they loved it.
My husband didn't truly grieve his wife until we'd been married for a few years. He always felt he had to be super tough for the kids, keep going. Once he knew he & kids weren't alone anymore & that they'd be taken care of no matter what, he relaxed and really felt her loss for the first time.
Not trying to get political but living overseas for 10 yrs. (military) & seeing universal healthcare systems in action convinced me that U.S. is doing it all wrong. Nobody facing illness should have to think about $, sell meth, lose a home, etc. "Socialized" medicine covered my husband's late wife, courtesy of the USAF. Cost to the family for chemo, radiation, surgery, scans, medicines, hospice nurses & equipment: less than $1000. Food for thought, yo.

Universal healthcare shouldn't even necessarily be a Democrat / Republican type political argument. It's a little bit cheaper and a LOT better for citizens. If something is cheaper and better, you can't LOGICALLY argue against it, in terms of cost. Many argue illogically. There ARE a few minor valid criticisms that aren't brought up a lot, to which I say this: the Americans who can now afford to purchase quicker wait times can surely afford to fly internationally for the fastest available surgeries IF universal healthcare prevents it.

I'll tell you what, poor people in India had to go through that crap. Then the government stepped in. Today, the poorest person in the country can go to some of the most expensive private hospitals in India and get treated for free. This facility is available to 500 million of our poorest citizens.
And FYI, Indian private hospitals are some of the best in the world. People come from all over the world for affordable treatment in India. That includes people from USA. And in Africa, people only know to go to either South Africa or India. The success rates in some Indian private hospitals are higher than in USA John Hopkins, etc.
If a developing country, where 22% of the population lives in poverty, could do this, why can the USA not do it? What is the point of being a democracy if the needs of the electorate are not met?

    R. J. Mitte as Walter and Skyler’s son is really outstanding. In case you don’t know, the actor has a similar disability to his character. As someone with a disability myself, I love how the son’s disability is a very low-grade part of Walter’s overall motivation. It’s rarely talked about, or explicitly invoked, but it’s there. Best of all, the son’s character isn’t just solely about being “the disabled kid.” He’s interesting and enjoyable in a number of ways, pretty three-dimensional for a side character.

I really liked the ending for this episode.
While Walter's family is all weirded out by how he doesn't seem to be coping/reacting to his cancer, the ending shows that he definitely is. That his emotions are running wild inside there, bottling it up, and he's venting it via anger/violence/crime. I think his reaction to that annoying douche and his car shows that money is really just his moral justification for what's happening, but the reality is he's venting his despair at terminal cancer by not being Mr. Straight-Laced GoodieTwoShoes, and by being a 'bad' guy and not taking crap from people any more.
You also see something of the opposite in Jesse, here. That, while Jesse is definitely a 'bad' person, he's fighting inside to not be - which is why he looks out for his brother two-fold by both not ratting him out, but by also denying him drugs. And it also shows how he was looking out for his parents, by shielding them from the fact that their other boy is trying to dabble in drugs, too. That he's more or less, a well-meaning addict who just can't overcome his addiction and the trouble/company that comes with it.
It's part of why I love this show. The characters run deep, so that the way they're acting makes rational psychological sense, even if they're flawed choices. It is conceivable that these characters and this story, so far anyway, could really exist and happen. For me, anyway, that's the thing that makes this show most special.
Probably just me, but that's my $0.02.

He sat on the news about his brain tumor for ages until slipped it to mom who in turn told us the kids. He was convinced that it would just go away if he told no one. The great plot twist was that what was initially thought as a tumor size of his fist turned out to be mostly liquid and the tumor just a fraction of the size, so he lived.

Just to give you some perspective on the question of how do you talk about it to your child about something like this.
    I was that child.
My dad got pancreatic cancer when I was 12 and he was 42 (which I will hit next year). And the only talk we ever had was right after his diagnosis. And to this day I don't know whether his doctor really told him that this is one of the most lethal kinds. I assume he did, and kept to himself, even from my mom.
But that was something we didn't talk about. It was his best friend who told me 4 months before he died, that there was no way he was going to recover, that it was just about buying time.
So what he did was sitting me down on the couch next to him and telling me that he was very sick, that it was cancer and that a very hard time lay ahead of us. And then he broke off and cried. Which was more than enough to tell me how bad it really was. And so we said there in silence hugging each other and crying.
That was the only time we ever talked about it. We never talked about the possibility of death. We just talked about the hope of surviving. And then we lived our lifes as long as possible as normal as possible.
Anything else would driven us mad, I think.

I lost my father to cancer a few years ago. And yes, it's one of the worst feelings and situations in life. Knowing in advance that a person you love has a limited time changes everything. The whole family starts to die in one way or another. You have no idea how to deal with all the shit because nobody teaches you stuff like this. You have no idea how to even talk to the person, it's impossible to know unless you are the one that have it. I watched this show a few years before my dad got sick, and now it's the first time i'm "watching it" (with you guys) and oh boy... the feelings are so much stronger now. You can't just go to any doctor you want to, you have to stay in network or you pay the full amount out of pocket. You have to think as well that no matter what they find whether it's DNA, or fingerprints that you have to have done something wrong to be fingerprinted, or have a DNA sample taken to be in the database. Seeing as how Walter has been a quiet "good guy" up until this point he doesn't have any criminal record for the law to match his prints or DNA to anything they find so he would be in the clear.
