    It's hard to believe how some people think they can buy an almost 20-years old high performance car without doing some basic maintenance steps like changing the engine oil, tramsmission oil, differential oil, brake pads and even run it on track/drift days without doing some ABSOLUTELY essential things like changing your thermostat and waterpump. Old performance cars are fun to drive (IMO more than most modern ones), but all these years don't pass in vain, they need some servicing. A 20 years old miata would need the same things + timing belt change and it would never be a M3.

    • @Brandon-uy1uv
      @Brandon-uy1uv 4 года назад +1

      Yes, it's what I tell my friends when they ask me why I bought a 1991 maxima and poured more money than it cost me to buy it in repairs. People don't take care of shit when it comes to cars here in Mexico. They think that if it still runs it's fine and only do maintenance and repairs (or sell the poor thing) once the car strands them. I searched hard to find this maxima and made shure that the engine seals were good and the transmission wasn't slipping or completely trashed like other cars that I took on a test drive before buying my maxima. They probably sold me the car because the rack and pinion leaked all the oil out and was really hard to drive, the battery had a bad cell so it wouldn't start and because the tires were worn down to the internal mesh wires.

    You really should have bought an E46 though

    • @LogiForce86
      @LogiForce86 8 лет назад +2

      Not that it would be that much better. I have a mere E46 Compact 316ti and also I am dealing with the same type of small stuff that adds up, but luckily I don't have elephants bugging me yet.
      I did pay at least 150 euro per month on OEM parts since I got the car though, and I have it for 6 months now. So that's at least 900 euro invested already, but I also had to replace the front suspension arms and bushings, buy an extra set of rims for winter tyres, et cetera, that raised the costs above the monthly 150 euro easily.
      All in all I would say that I am not that far off of Alex's figures either, although that elephant is giving him quite the lead I must say. I still need to replace the front windshield, cowl, rubbers all-around the car, left rear-window since the surround is rusting and wants to affect the B-pillar. I still need to do the air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, change oils, change spark plugs, replace old Bemi coils with Bosch ones. Plus more little things that just add up.
      All in all... when you're a car lover and car for the car than it'll just cost you when you first buy any car. Normal drivers just get the regular MOT and maybe an extended service plan (or whatever its called in England) and that's it. They just don't notice the things that might have lower performance or ar simply damaged. I call it the "as long as it still drivers, it's fine" mentality.
      So yeah, car lovers will have it hard but in the end it'll be worth it because our cars will stand the test of time in the long run, and in the mean time the cars of the normal non-caring folk will be long scrapped.

    • @Re4pZz
      @Re4pZz 8 лет назад +13

      who the fuck buys 316ti?? buy at least 318i facelift ...

    • @LogiForce86
      @LogiForce86 8 лет назад +6

      Re4pZz Because maybe when the engine gives I would do an M3 swap on it? :p
      Also why the fuck would you want a sedan/saloon? The bloody thing isn't practical, there is more weight behind the rear axle which has some influence through physics upon the cars handling. Than there is the fact that the compact has a better steering ratio by default.
      Mine already has the M suspension from factory, it's in a rare color with matching half letter sport seats, it has everything except full auto HVAC and DSC. It hardly had done any kilometers in its life... 130.000 in 15 years. It just was sadly neglected by the previous owners in terms of maintenance. Also it seems as if kids broke a few interiour pieces as well, and some had gone missing. There was no documentation anymore, nor the standard toolbag in the trunk.
      Some guys drifted it and broke a few things, like the rather expensive (new) spare tyre box under the car.
      Yet it all isn't stuff that would mean the car is scrap material, and it's a good base for interesting things. :)
      The real reason why I bought a 316ti is the fact that I am completely unfit for work due to health reasons, and thus money is a bit tight. So it's mileage above speed in this case.
      Plus I had cars that were lighter in the past and since our vehicle road tax is based upon a weight class system I did not know how much the increased fixed charges would influence me each month on the long run.
      Oh, and I like the round lights btw. Unlike many of you. I liked them on the E30 generation. I liked them on Mk1 and Mk2 VW Golfs and Polos. It's just something odd that I am into I guess, while others might be more into popup headlights. :)

    • @Stag2997
      @Stag2997 8 лет назад +2

      They still cost a fortune. I've spent around £250 in service parts on mine within 4k of buying it and £370 on repairs. That does not include £1k on a front end respray/dealing with rust on the wings.
      Mind you it is pretty good now (famous last words!).

      The E46 M3 has more catastrophic engine issues (Rod Bearings/Vanos Hub Tabs), needs more expensive oil (Castrol TWS), and tears subframe mounts unlike the late model E36 M3s.
      Good luck with an E46.

In Europe(Germany, Poland, Hungary, etc.) if somebody want to sell a right hand drive car the price is 40-50% less then the left hand drive version. Nobody pay the same price for a car with a wheel witch is on the wrong side.

  • @mowglilp
    @mowglilp 8 лет назад +18

    It's really not that bad, Alex. I wouldn't complain. First of all, you have a classic car. You realize there's a price to pay for that. Second, most of the stuff you bought is preventive maintenance on any car, especially an M3, regardless of generation. In fact, I'd change the entire cooling system to be safe. Then what with those prices? I paid more for a thermostat and viscous for a 520i E34 and I didn't buy dealer stuff either. True, I bought the best German made parts I could find, usually from original suppliers of OEM parts, but still... that's not much at all.
    I know the M3 is not a supercar, but still. A Gallardo clutch is what? 3000 pounds every 20.000 miles or 3 launch controls? 600 pounds on maintenance is really nothing.
    Where you did get the short end of the stick is at the rust repair and whoever charged you 2000 pounds for that is either scamming you or he did more work than I can imagine because I was quoted 1000 pounds in East Europe at a professional classic car restorer, for a full body rust restoration + paint job on my E34 and that includes material. My car is not as rusted as yours, but still...
    So those 2000 pounds are the only thing that stick out. Next time take your car to a classic car expert and restoration service in Central or Eastern Europe for a much better price.
    Also, if you bought an M3 and you're not getting into DYI, that's a big mistake as it can financially ruin you. If you do the work yourself, with good parts, it's pretty much a one time full service and then you can enjoy many years of trouble free motoring, almost as good as with any performance Honda.

  • @brennerfineart
    @brennerfineart 8 лет назад

    The E46 M3 - well nearly all of them (I know two guys driving a E46 M3 that had this problem) have massive problems with the rear axle that simply tears out of the subframe. And this repair alone will cost around 6.000 Euros when done at BMW. Not to mention all the other "issues" a E46 can have - definitely cheaper to go for a E36 M3 in the long run.

  • @Nick.Brough
    @Nick.Brough 8 лет назад +22

    That doesn't seem so bad! "Classic" car ownership usually saves you from the stealthiest but most expensive motoring cost of all: DEPRECIATION. If anything I bet the E36 M3 is increasing in value these days, not that you can readily spend this money of course.

    I had a 1999 523i which had no problem until 200,000 km. Then the sum of radiator, ignition coils, oil leaks (which we eventually gave up trying to fix, they would seem to spring out of everywhere), fuel pump, drive shaft all ended up at 5-6k AUD + (not including servicing in that time); in the end a bus wrote it off by running into it and triggering the airbag failure warning sign. The insurance company decided it was cheaper to write it off than repair the door damage and replace 10 air bags.

      Max S. your funny, all m3s have the problem , normally 2000$ to prevent if you replace all the bushings and reinforce the frame yourself, if you don't however it could total your e46, the structural fix bmw did was not enough

      *****
      That problem has been known since the E36s first came out in the early 90s! E36 and 46 share the same basic chassis design and the problem was not fully solved with E46, (but the M3 has a reinforced subframe mounting points which helps combat the issue). Likewise the rusting wheel arches and the VANOS oil ring issues. The two cars have a lot more in common than most people realise. Problems included.

    Repairing the e36 m3 can be cheap if you know how to. There is no major service in that list apart from that of the rusty thing... oil, filter etc are all consumables. Rocker cover gasket... thats like half an hour for anyone. Even rear bearing and that stuff is easy. For the manoey you are spending on getting it serviced you can purchase some ramps, some jack to lift up the car, some tools, and do it on your own. Probably it shares bearings with other e36 models wich would end up being extremely cheap.
    If you had an e46 I think you would end up having the exact same issues because there is nothing unsusual there...

    Congrats for your cool channel! Today I won a 99 M3 I was been watching for a few weeks at an online Auction in Minneapolis MN USA for 3k US dollars delivered to my doorstep. Only difference is mine is black and with 200k miles on it. I am not really too worry about the mechanical conditions or looks of it but will definitely look for rust. Since I couldn't really be sure from online. When I said I do not worry is because I know this cars, and their engines have such good quality back then, that I know with care and proper maintenance(including the possibility of changing the block), will run forever. I been buying cars for a few years now to build my own private collection and my suggestion to you and to your viewers are to do some research before buying parts. I look from Ebay to Amazon, and local European Car distributors to the most underground Junkyards. I do this in Miami, FL where I reside and I've found unimaginable deals even for newer versions of M3's. Last thing is to find a good mechanic preferably a mature one with a good heart and conscious :P Some parts I even get at BMW dealers and I definitely go to them for diagnostic, its worth the $139 trust me. These are my tips and i wish I can show you my before and after. Your M3 looks great and I'm sure runs great! Take care of it. Best of Luck!

    Well mate, I absolutly understand your feelings. I dont own an M3, its only a 1999, e36 325TDS touring (manual). So far I spent money on:
    - Engine oil, at the time of changing it and topping it up all the time
    - Needed new whishbones, all around shock absorbers and rear top mounts. So I swapped to coilovers.
    - New cat back exhaust 'cos it was more rust than steel.
    - New Steering rack 'cos it was leaking fluid, and new power steering pump, cos some of previous owner let it run dry for too long, of course its only started to be noisy and nackerd since I own it.
    - Bushes....well... a lot of them.
    - Wheel bearings and hubs on the rear.
    - And the rest is just my stuff I have done to improve it, like: EGR delete and manual boost conroller, and ECU remap. Still will need a bigger inter cooler.
    - OH! And I nearly forgot. rust Rust RUST!! Rear wheel arch / fender.
    I love the e36 'cos the look and because of it was a great car of my young years, and with my friends in Hungary we allways look at it like "The coolest car of 90's"
    I have done most of the fixing myself and it helped me to get over some hard days. I love to drive it, but I know I will have to spend more and more money on it to keep it in a good condition. Hopefully people are right and it will be a real classic after like 7-8 years time.
    Car Throttle is awsome!! You guys gave me a lot of motivation.Thanks a lot.

    Bar the rust, i would actually say its cheap for the age of the car. When ever i buy a car that is 10 years+ i always factor in about £600 for the first year, that could be timing belt and consumable parts, do you really expect mechanical components to last for than 10 years? particularly suspension. So if you didn't buy a rust bucket, i would say thats reasonable.

  • @YOTLP
    @YOTLP 8 лет назад +7

    What do you expect? It's a nearly 20 yr old car and also German cars are more expensive to maintenance than let's say English or Japanese cars, if you don't live in Germany. I for example drive an E36 as well, not an M3 though and the maintenance is actually cheaper than most of the cars my buddies drive, but that's because I live in Germany and there are MANY people who know how to fix this car. Also you don't have to buy new parts all the time, which again reduces the cost by a lot.
    I'm not hating or anything. I'm a huge fan and driving an M3 is the dream of many petrolheads. Sometimes the costs do hurt a bit, but driving this thing is so much worth it :)

    the rust on e36 is the only real issue which can be prevented with a good check before buying

    Alex, as fun as e36's are to drive when they are working properly, breaking is what they do best. They were the first BMW produced with recycling in mind and were a predecessor to forced obsolescence in cars. My wife had a '98 328iS and it was a great car up until about 140k miles and everything in the interior and on the body started falling apart. For comparison, my '88 528e had over 234k miles on it and I ragged the hell out of it never really had any issues.

    • @stevgtguy
      @stevgtguy 8 лет назад

      Oh and the 528e is still running and being enjoyed by the man I sold it to whereas the e36 got traded into a dealer for a measly $500 and probably went to a junk yard. So sad.

    last year i bought 1993 lagoona green 318i with automatic gearbox and worst e36's engine : M40 and it was knocking little bit... I bought it because it have low km (189 000) ,very original condition AND super low price (600 euros). It had only 2 small problems 1) medium hole in muffler 2) 2 very very small rust holes in skirts. i fixed this problems after week and paid 140 euros.after 3 days i changed oil form unknown dark mud to mobil 5w-40 and than engine started to knock like a $hit (normal m40 problem, tappets worn out too fast because 5w40 is too good for m40). After about 2 months my thermostat broke down and i go to car service to repair it, and asked to diagnosys too. they find alot of major problems, almoust everything was form factory... I paid for it 1000 euros. After 4 days my water pump borke down... i paid for it 80 euros. than after 2 months my radiator blow up, i go to my friend who are repairing cars and asked him to replace radiator and inspect engine. in one good day my friend call's me and say ''Its god miracle how your engine belt is still in one piece, it had to broke down 5 years ago , because it's not changed 15 years'' i was shocked... i bought new belt, radiator, all camshaft kit and atf oil because he checked transmission and oil change was right in time. i paid for it 600 euros. the engine after this started to run like best quality swiss clock :) Now everything is excelent, my car are in my friends ar service and he is changing 2 front shock absorbers because they are leaking oil very well (i must pay 400 euros). Summary car is in normal technical condition BUT- my car have scratches in paint, rust, and everything else what u can imagine in 23 year old car, so i must pay about 2k to make it look great. Summaray i am payd for this car about 2,2k and i will pay 2k too to #MakeMyBimmerLookGreatAgain... soo its about 4,4k... Yeah, E36's are pretty expensive fun!
    PS : Sorry for my awful English.

      Thomas Gobs I like 10w30, 10w40, and 15w40 for my cars depending on usage. My Turbo car and '55 Chevy both run the 15w40 Diesel oil.

    • @Theteese
      @Theteese 6 лет назад

      MRsjovealek ....If the 10W xx is for getting oil to get in to the engine quicker on start up ( Were wear and tear on the engine is at its greatest ) than 15 or 20W xx and if xxW60 is to provide better protection to the engine than xxW 40 or 50 then wouldn't Thomas gobs be correct in saying PROTECT your car with 10W60 from the start to ensure that the engine lasts longer and delays the - very worn..

    • @BigUriel
      @BigUriel 5 лет назад

      @@Theteese Higher viscosity oil doesn't necessarily protect your engine any better, in fact it may be worse as the oil doesn't flow easily to all the places it needs to go (VANOS units will just love the wrong oil viscosity for instance). It also decreases performance and increases fuel consumption somewhat.
      People use these oils on track cars because on the track the engine will be running very hot, as the oil gets hotter its viscosity drops so an oil that is too thick for road use is just right for the track.

      The UK economy is being held down by taxation and government market fixing which has meant it is becoming very expensive for working class people.
      The average house costs about £160,000=$198,000 yet the average working class salary is only £20,000.
      Think about this the average UK card carrying unionized electrician hourly rate is about $15 p/h and that is highly qualified 4 year trade school/apprenticeship trained.
      My medical salary in the US is 5 times higher than the UK.

    Wow. I expected way more than that. My Astra had its engine damaged 3 weeks after I bought it cause the previous owner built in some fucked up parts, cost me 1500€. The oil I had to refill before they could actually tell me that the engine was fucked cost me 160€, and that's JUST the oil that burnt away. Windshield got hit by a stone 3 days after I bought it, cracked completely, 500€. This month I'd have to do MOT, which would cost me another 1700€ but I'm selling the car. Oh, and by the way... I work a 600€/month job.

    bought a 2013 STI with 19k miles. After a month of owning it, found out the previous owner had a downpipe and other common mods on it WITHOUT tune. Essentially fucked the engine for the 19k miles he had it. Month after owning it I spun a bearing. $6k later (immediately after buying a 28k$ car) I have a built IAG motor, but still...buying my all time dream car financially fucked me pretty hard.

    This guy is so annoying. He obviously bought a rough example and loves to whine about it. I've daily driven an E36 M3 for 13yrs, track and autox it regularly, beat on it almost every drive, and have had hardly any issues(plastic fan broke, wheel bearing replaced). Other than that just regular maintenance to keep the car in top performing condition.

      Well that really depends on the specific car. If he were to buy one for the same price as he bought his E36, I'd bet it would have even more rust or problems. Otherwise why would it be so cheap? Start digging into the E46's VANOs, bushings, and rods issues and you'll see why those quickly become maintenance nightmares compared to the much simpler E36.

    • @TheKenjoje

      You could Do the sub frame yourself for 140$, Rod bearings was a free fix (didn't fix the problem in my opinion) so consider bimmerworlds option that' bullet proof, 576$ w/ ARP rod bolts, and VANOS after core charge is roughly 450+ including vanos oil pressure line if you go beisen systems.1226$ w/o tax to solidify all major problems with the vehicle. Excluding that more or less it's just how you treat the vehicle. Definitely expensive on oil, bushings & the occasional valve adjustment. As well as odd cars when things aren't optimal.

    Car Throttle is actually turning everyone off to the idea of owning an E36 M3 and getting an E46 M3 instead. This is because they want to convince the viewers to not even apply for SuperSpeedersRob's giveaway M3 because it will just need a lot of fixing and maintenance no matter what. The less people that want an E36, the less that sign up, the less people sign up, the higher the chances that Car Throttle has of winning it.
    We all know they bought all of the limited edition shirts that give you more chances to win.

    It would be interesting to know how many miles you have used the M3 for. You have also missed out the cost of insurance and fuel. For example I have had my car for 2 years with a total cost of £7136. This includes cost of the car, insurance, tax, servicing and fuel. I have drvien shy of 10K miles. This works out to around 65p per mile.
    Now if I had an e36 M3 i would have spent £4000 on insurance alone.

      Salting of the roads in winter. Same as any other region that does it. Cars that use galvanising on both sides of the sheet metal like Audi are fine. I have a 18 year old Peugeot with no rust in the UK due I believe to a superior undercoating. My BMW 530i Touring of similar vintage rusted out the sills and tail gate. It was scrapped.
