One small correction: The V8 Coupe was always the E92, the sedan was always the E90 and the Vert was the E93.

Slight correction- The E92 was not a refresh of the E90... The E90 was the 4 door, the E91 was the wagon, the E92 was the coupe, and the E93 was the convertible. The M3's availability in each body style changed per year (but it was never available as an E91 wagon) but it stayed pretty consistent throughout the run, aside from some tweaks to the iDrive system.

Yes!!! This is important to the story because it caused the split in model name, it's again so German that they have to change the model name based on what the engineers part numbers were for the chassis. E92 was actually the first 4 series

@@Eagle_Beak Modern rally cars are nothing like old school rally cars. It used to be that a company built a car for rally, then made a street legal version. Now, they just take a model that already exists and mod the shit out of it until it's barely recognisable as the original car. Therefore, they don't really count anymore
@@filmandfirearms they built dedicated cars for group B because homologation rules were very loose. Apart from that, rally teams always used production cars simply because rules of Group A state so.

I just made a comment about that. I think they are already starting to. The Lamborghini and M3 stories have been covered a million times by other car series. This has the potential to be a great mini series. I feel like it’s ran by a bunch of fanboys who are infatuated with the STI and like cars.

@Samuel Trabue yeah, but the US motor is pretty lame, not bad, but it's just the regular 3 series engine with like cams and exhaust, 240 hp.
@@apodski I own two e36s, a 99 M3 and a 99 328is. The way they drive couldn't be more different. An extra 0.4L and 50 extra horsepower is a lot more engine. The 240 hp actually feels like the perfect amount of power for the light, perfectly balanced chassis.
@@johnpearson492 An e46 zhp goes better than a e36 m3, and the engines are both quite similar. Zhp has 18" wheels that ride kind of poorly, 17" like the e36 m3, is where it's at. E46s are stuck with open diff. M54 piston rings really drink the oil too, sadly. And, an e46 sunroof weighs 75lbs and it's almost impossible to find a non-sunroof car, so you can't have it all.
But, my point is, the US e36 m3 is not nearly as hot as the euro version, and a lot closer to a normal bmw. In some ways this is good, way less potential for engine problems and expense, m52 is one of the most durable engines on the road with pretty cheap parts. The s52 also sounds great and 240hp in an e36 will make you happy.
@@apodski Indeed and e46 zhp is a great car too. The e46 looks like a bar of soap to me and are a lot more refined to drive, it doesn't quite have the raw edge of the e36s. Can't really go wrong with either. They are both wonderful cars.

Well there is one, sort of. It has the E92 front, 4 Doors and the E90 back.
thats literally every e90 m3, thats why people get confused. e9X M3s all use the same front end, doesn't matter if it's a coupe, sedan or vert.

Amazing video. Been following Donut for a while now. What I've found is that the more modern the M badge and AMG models become, the more comforts and electronics they add which increases maintenance costs. I feel like the BMWs of the 2000s struck a nice balance between the unsafe, slightly primitive older models and the overcomplicated and downright ugly latest models.

I owned a yellow E36 in ‘95. I’ve had first gen Supra turbos, a 300zx twin-turbo, a first gen Viper, an AE86... the M3 was my favorite. It’s like that ex-girlfriend whose memory haunts you.

Strange how you didn't mention that the M3 GTR is the rarest ad was created in a similar need to beat other German teams at 24hrs of LeMans. As a proud owner of a 2004 m3, i highly suggest getting one with very low miles or getting a 330ci and doing a conversion. M3 e46s are rarely in good condition now.. The cheapest m3 you buy will be the most expensive

My brother used to have an old 3 series and that thing was so fun. It went through 4 radiators until we realized the head was cracked but it was a drifting sled in the THICC Michigan snow. RIP to a great car.
