Hey Jacob, just want to let you know that the "throne thief Ullr" story comes from the Gesta Danorum (the deeds of Danes), an historical chronicle of XII century (not accurate on the ancient times, but it has interesting legends not to be found otherwise - maybe this story could be a local/continental story, not shared by the Icelanders who wrote the Eddas).
Thank you for these videos, they've cleared up a lot of confusion for me (I'm new to this) and helped reaffirm some things I've been unsure of in my practice. Keep up the good work!!
I'm still new to Norse Paganism and when I think of Norse God of Winter my first thought was Hodr and for some reason i felt some connection to him even though he doesn't have many followers
Hello Jacob, I first would like to say that I really appreciate your content. I love how forthright you are with misconceptions and inconsistencies. As someone who has dabbled in this faith for many years, I too asked very similar questions. My current practice has less to do with the gods and more to do with nature, meditation and runes. A few years ago I came to a personal understanding (whatever that means) that the ultimate focus of spirituality back then was more about the Earth and our galaxy connecting worlds together like a great tree and also living in harmony with the seasons. The gods are beings in this universe like we are and though the stories of them demonstrate their power, they still have to abide by nature's laws. And like us, they are fallible, they are born and they die. So for me, instead of trying to figure out which god to pray to, which is very Greek as you said, I focus more on connecting to the essence of winter within nature. Personally, I think that the strings of energy that make subatomic particles and so on (string theory) is actually conscious thought and therefore the universe even on the most subtle level possesses intelligence. I feel connected to this when I meditate personally. As far as some of the stories of the gods, I have found a strong connection between them and the geographical conditions, weather and seasons of the Scandinavian countries. I'm not limiting them to that, but I think it's very possible that many of the stories were ways of explaining the passing of seasons, cycles of time and whatnot. National Geographic has a great series called Wild Nordic that I think corresponds with my hypothesis. I also think climate, weather, and ecosystems are why the gods of the southern Germanic folk are basically the same but also different than the gods of the northern Germanic folk. Would love to hear your thoughts. Skol.
Thank you for acknowledging the confusion and resulting difficulty regarding research, understanding, and practice! While I'm not a Norse pagan, I do have Germanic ancestry (who are of course cousins of the Norse) and am trying to get better acquainted with my ancestral gods in general. It's nice to know that I'm not losing my mind, and that the challenges are legitimate.
I give praise to all the Gods and Goddess of Asgard all the time. My two most worshipped are Ullr and Idunna! When I pray, I pray to Them all yet some times I address who ever I prefer for specific issues. When I go Ice fishing or Hunting, I talk to Ullr, Skathi, Wotan, and Freyja. When working in my garden, I talk to Idunna, Freyja, Thor. When I play or compose music, I talk to Bragi, Wotan, Frigg (Freyja) and Bur. When I loose a loved one or friend I pray to Wotan, Gefjun, Hel, and Vali. I also ask for guidance from Vali when looking for items I have misplaced. I may even address some of the giants. I NEVER address or direct my conversation to Loki!
I started this path because odin called me then I found out first hand he can be a vary distant god god so made some offerings to Thor I would like to think Thor and I have a good friendship... but more recently skadi made herself known to me I'm still vary new to Norse paganism and I had not heard of skadi yet when she came to me in a dream or dream like state told me her name and who she was... and I must say that I absolutely love her and I make offerings every time it snows or it's snowing and since Pickering her up as one of my gods I have a new love for winter... Jacob, one thing I would potentially recommend is to not discount stories and sources from other indo-european native religions. The gods of many of these different religions are very similar to one another and point to a common ancestral indo-european religion. For example, Thor is very comparable to the Greek Heracles, the Finnish Ukko, the Slavic Perun, the Vedic Indra, and the Celtic Taranis. All of these gods having similar stories told about them points us to an older truth that out ancestors knew. I primarily study the Germanic/Norse gods because that is what I am most familiar with and connect the most with but I also study other indo-european mythologies because connections can often be made between them. Use these connections to further your learning and understanding of our old gods.
Like you said toward the beginning of the video, norse paganism (in my understanding) is more focused on the characterization of the gods in the information we have, rather than having one specific god for each area. I'd recommend to anyone, take some time, see who you relate to most as a winter god and offer to them. I relate most with Skadi and I give to her when appreciating winter. Others may relate more with Frigg or Ullr.
Our faith also has shitloads and shitloads of love goddesses. Freyja is the most famous, but Frigg has an entire court of different goddesses that each represent their own take on love.
I personally think Skadi, however, that's just a feeling I had after I did some research. I do like this video. You breaking it down, showing references to books and your personal experience its really helpful and unique.
Haven’t all the scholars, including Dr. Crawford, said that the gods weren’t the “god of” anything and people had to get out of the habit of contributing traits of the gods to “god of”? Could explain why there’s no real answer and just a million random opinions about which seasonal name to offer to
From what I gather, to my Hessian ancestors, it was Holle, or at least that she was the most commonly observed as such. To go along with what you have said about who we connect with, I feel that with her. I have yet to reach out to Ullr or Skadi, though.
The Norse gods are associated with certain things...but I don't think they are the gods of anything in particular...and that makes sense to me! All people are multifaceted, so why wouldn't the gods be? Skadi is for sure a god who loves winter and mountains and hunting, and I think Ullr is the same...but are the the "gods of winter"? I really don't think they are. I don't think their presence brings winter...but winter might bring their presence. When Thor is riding his chariot pulled by his goats, thunder follows him, but is he the "god of thunder"? No. It's just circumstantial. It's not thundering constantly when he is around unless he is riding his chariot, or hurling his hammer, right? I think the localized environmental spirits have far more to do with the weather in a particular area because they are so deeply connected to the land.
All I know is that i gave offering to skadi and the next day we didn't get the bad storm we were supposed to and the ice was melted by the next night so yeah
My theory is that Hodr and Balder were originally twins - Yin and Yang, Balder was Light, Hodr was Dark,....In winter dark conquers light, referring to the death of balder,.... Thus in winter Hodr partially takes over Odin, and Frigg being a weather goddess cries, hence snow
What’s the Hodr joke about?? I know Hodr is Odin’s son that was tricked by Loki to kill his brother Baldr. Hodr is the night and darkness while Baldr is light and all that is beautiful. When Hodr is killed by Odin, ragnarok follows soon after. There is a loss of balance it seems that happened. The loss of both the dark and the light. They have to balance each other.
In Sweden I've heard people say that june is the month of Frigg, just like may is the month of Freyja. Personally I do not associate her with winter. Ullr and Skadi I would say are both winter gods
Just a thought that came to me. We need balance, Baldr is the light give him an offering on the summer solstice as it’s the longest day, most light, of the year. Hodr would be the winter solstice longest night, most darkness, of the year. This could be done while also celebrating the the holidays and the other God/desses that need to be given offerings and such forth. Forgive me as it’s late and this might not have come out as I intended.
So you're the one that caused all this snow?! Just kidding, but it has snowed more this year than the past few years (it's snowing again right now!) and I do feel like there is something else going on here and I'd like to think it's the gods. Also, the way you framed this with the trees behind you looks really neat

Why in Germany, that they would say Frigga? When they have their own winter Goddess. Who is called Frau Holle, Mutter Holda. Why do they ignore their own? I don't understand. In Germany Frigga would be Freid, or Frija. And would be related to Frau Holle.
See I think it’s not a matter of any of them being THE god of anything. In Norse I think it’s more like A god of winter. When the Norse said god of, it means a god of because they are not referencing a single god who is master of one thing, but referencing characteristics of that god. All of those gods, like the winter, which is typical of the Norse that their gods would love winter. I think many gods who like the winter would be referred to as god of winter.
You’re wise to reach out to the Norse gods, they are the most powerful and most capable. They are real and visit earth regularly in disguise. Odin is a god of magic, sorcery, shamanism and the dead (and a LOT of other cool things). He once communicated with a “healer” type person about an entity that was attached to me for years. This healer type person appeared in my life out of nowhere and had a huge life changing impact. Odin possessed this person in a ceremony, her voice changed, I felt a presence I could never describe accurately, I was terrified, couldn’t speak, literal quivering bottom lip trying to talk. I have never felt anything like that before. The possessed healer starting making hand movements like they were pulling something invisible out of my stomach area without touching me. I literally was pulled up off my back (I was laying down), floating above the floor with my back arched like crazy like seriously some kind of exorcist movie. I know it’s unbelievable and I have never shared this to anyone. I made an anonymous account just to share some of my experiences like this. In the end Odin showed me how powerful he was and how arrogant I had been in my life. Hubris was a word I never heard before but earlier that day it kept repeating in my head and I had no idea where it came from. After the ceremony/entity removal I looked it up and realized Odin was very very involved on an individual level more than I could have believed. He let me know I attracted the entity with my own actions. It was attached for a reason, of my own doing. He let me deal with it on my own for a long time before removing it. There is wisdom to be attained from the experience. More recently Odin had me walk out to a cemetery at midnight just to try to scare the shit out of me. When we don’t show fear in a situation like that, the dead/spirits whatever is around see that we’re not afraid and instead of tormenting they will actually follow us or help us or obey us if we ask for something. I have never commented like this before and usually don’t get so wordy but this is flowing out of me like I’m channeling this for some reason I don’t understand. I hope this helps even one person. PS I didn’t know who Odin was at all before that healer woman walked into my life. I was a Christian who didn’t go to church other than maybe Christmas every other year. I thought I knew what god was. My entire life changed so fast and so drastically after that removal that looking back over the last couple years is a wild beautiful sketchy scary as hell experience, the Odin way, as I’m beginning to see it. Life is awesome and the gods are literally more real than I ever could believe without a few real life experiences I was gifted. Asking for signs was welcomed and they will respond. If they’re tormenting you they probably want you to be afraid. Don’t give them that power. You are much more powerful than the entity. It will put up a fight, but you will win or die fighting with honor and without fear.
@@helygg8892 well there's multiple stories depending on what region of Europe you come from in another story he was murdered purposefully due to a fight over a woman.
@@helygg8892 as for the Norse version of his tale they get it a bit wrong through transition because mistletoe cannot be in a stick form it is a parasitic bush like plant. However a stick covered with mistletoe or tipped with mistletoe could do the piercing. People in antiquity had no idea that mistletoe wasn't really a part of the plant it was growing out of
The Greeks, Romans, Sumerians, etc. did not have a "God of Winter". Why do you assume that the Norse would have a God of Winter? The Greeks - and others - had a mythic reason for Winter to occur (e.g., the absence of Persephone in the Underworld) but not a "God of Winter". Winter does not need to be invoked because it is part of the cycle of life. It will happen regardless of your prayers.
I don't do Blot but I pray with the Runes constantly. Make yourself a set of Runes...I have made five different sets...two of clay and three on cards.
Please, an entity is tormenting me, I need help, could you please send me a message? I'm trying to reach out to the Norse gods
Let me know if you want contact info for the woman who removed mine. Odin is very fond of her.
Baldr is my Patron
Felled by a twig, oh great hero.
People in antiquity had no idea that mistletoe wasn't really a part of the plant it was growing out of
I wouldn't give the stories as much mind as your experiences :)
@@mr.monster91666 I'm just poking fun at the shining one :)
But I do like your videos! :)
I don't do Blot but I pray with the Runes constantly. Make yourself a set of Runes...I have made five different sets...two of clay and three on cards. A deck of runes is nice because you can add the meanings on them. I love Ralph Blum's book "The Book of Runes" I have bought several sets of Runes but only use my Tiger Eye set!
using the prose edda is trash
Hey love you Chanel I have one question how do a curse work
Winter Sucks
If you don't know who the God/Goddess of Winter is. I would ask Odin...
We have also Father Frost. I forgot his norse name. They had a ritual burning a fur tree with horses and childs intestines on it
First for once lol. #gooutside
