    I really like your take on Baldr and the Interview with your friend. Good to see others who are interested in the God of light (although I always imagined him with black hair and green eyes). I think the reason for hin beeing killed with a mistletoe could hint to the Winter solstice when It's the darkest time in the northern hemisphere and mistletoe is a plant with berries ripening in winter. Beautiful Song!

    • @petersmedley459
      @petersmedley459 7 месяцев назад

      Also Mistletoe was regarded as magical…it grew on a tree and so was of the earth…but had its roots and existence in the air and so was of the sky. It spanned two separate worlds and so was something…other. There is a deeper mythology here than the exterior of Baldr’s story. Further, if Loki is the ‘bad guy’ why does he place Baldr beyond the events of Ragnorok, safe in a place where he is treated with honour, at the ultimate cost to himself? Loki is not Lucifer, Baldr is not Christ (despite Snorri Sturlsson’s efforts…), the story is more complex.

    Really glad to see Baldur getting some love. It was his wife Nanna that reached out to me in my darkest moments and brought me to Norse Paganism, and eventually this beautiful community.

    • @odinsoutlaw7572
      @odinsoutlaw7572 Год назад

      @Freki Bodgaedir From what I know in the sagas, Hel is not married in Norse Mythology. Baldur’s wife is the Goddess Nanna, who is the Goddess of peace, love, and a Goddess of the Moon. In the stories she threw herself on Baldur’s funeral pyre out of grief to be burned with him

I’m quite done with the Christian community (Pentecost community) I’ve realized just over this past year that they are very judgmental and nothing but hypocrites and was curious if you and the community can maybe guide me on this path and help me to see if this is the right path for me.

    One theory that I've heard about Baldr and Loki is that since Loki is often portrayed as an agent of change -for good or ill- , he was unhappy that the Aesir had disrupted the natural flow of life and death on Baldr's behalf. Considering how Hel responded to the request to bring him back, I find it to be a compelling speculation.
    Also, thank you for introducing us to another wonderful musician, I always love finding new music to listen to!

    • @buttons9176
      @buttons9176 Год назад

      A few points to answer your valid question:
      1) Change is ugly and terrifying to someone fighting against it. We walk one path only to be tricked by a road block onto another path. There's no inherent morality in change or chaos. it's just a part of the natural world. I know this because I work in mental health. The biggest cheat code for mental health I could give is that control is an illusion. With Baldr, the gods wanted control over the natural cycle of life. Could Loki have just been petty or jealous? Maybe. Could he have been angry the gods were subverting the natural order of things? Maybe. Death and destruction are his offspring, after all.
      2) While there's no widespread historical evidence of Loki's worship, there's no historical evidence that he was universally hated either. Some historians actually theorize that he was originally a localized god of the hearth, and that's where his association with fire came from. The point is, he can be different things to different people. I put forward one hypothesis I'd seen that I found corresponded with my understanding of Loki and his mythos.
      3) Remember that the sagas and eddas were written down by Christians trying to preserve a culture they were a good century or so removed from. We don't really know what the oldest tales were beyond what Snorri and the Romans saw fit to record. These stories carry the biases of the storyteller, whether they meant to or not.
      4) This comment is a year old. Since then, I've come to understand that -for me- the gods are not wholly represented in their myths. They are beings that exist outside the mythos as well, and these stories are not meant to be taken as literally as they have been in many cases. I came to a harsh realization that taking these stories literally and putting the figures in them into these rigid boxes was a by-product of being raised in a fundamentalist christian setting and was something I needed to deconstruct.
      To reiterate, your interpretation is valid for you. I just wanted to answer your question and explain the way I see things. Hope this satisfies your curiosity! Learning to work with Loki has done me personally a lot of good, but I know he's not everyone's horn of mead as it were.

    There's an in-depth discussion of Baldr's death in Stephan Grundy's God In Flames, God In Fetters: Loki's Role in the Northern Religions. "The ' Three God Bracteates,' pair of Migration Age gold pendants with inscriptions, depict three figures in an enclosure. On the right, one holds a spear, the central figure holds a ring, and the one on the left is throwing a twig.
    It's accepted that this depicts Loki, Baldr, and Odin and the scene is a dedication or offering in an envlosed vé.
    The Norse view of Baldr's death as a holy offering is seen in the kennings for him, "heilagt tafn" (holy sacrifice, Húsdrápa 9) and possibly blódugr tivorr (Völuspá 31); it certainly lived on into the Viking age, and possibly past."
    There's a lot more, but I'm trying to be brief.
    It's a little gem of a book, packed with scholarship which puts a totally different take on the "tragic death" angle.

    Maybe Baldr represents the sun and, after the "world ends" via Ragnarok, the sun will shine again (the sun always rises anew). And maybe Loki was doing Odin a favor )or they had an agreement) to have Baldr in a safe place (Helheim) during the battles of Ragnarok, ensuring that he would be safe to rise again after the world ended. ????maybe????
