Hi Ghib Ojisan! The baby on the Popo Murukku was selected by the inventor because it served as a reminder for him to work hard for his firstborn son and family!
Regarding Popo and the Baby Logo, here's what I found: The Popo Muruku business was born from one simple idea - to make the most delicious snack, loved by all. Loads of sweat and tears were put in by the founding father Foong Chek Lung (Dad) to re-invent a traditional Indian snack. Foong Chek Lung started experimenting Muruku recipes only with the use of a frying wok, a rectangular cutter and his bare hands to bring a twist to the well-loved tidbit. After countless hours and sleepless nights, and with a stroke of luck, the ideal recipe was formulated using an array of spices and seasoning. Even the iconic Popo baby on the old-school red and white packaging were the result of his effortless design concept. Foong Chek Lung had chosen a baby logo because it served as a reminder for him to work hard for his firstborn son and family. And the name “Popo” (or “Baobao” in mandarin) which literally meant “my baby” was catchy and easily recalled by many customers. Till this day, he is still working tirelessly to expand and innovate the Popo Muruku’s line of products. Today, we take the opportunity to thank the founding father of Popo Muruku, for his dedication, not only to his customers, but also to his family. And we also wish to mention to all loving Fathers, who have also tirelessly worked hard to provide for their families, a big Thank You. Without Dad, there will be no POPO.
Prawn rolls are a sore throat waiting to happen. Once you start, you cant stop. And then you usually end up with a sore throat afterwards due to heatiness because you didn't drink enough water. Happens after every Chinese New Year. Little context. We stock up on snacks to serve the visiting relatives and friends during Chinese New Year and prawn rolls are a must.
I love your travel series and Japan experience Singapore series. While many of the snacks are not made in Singapore , many of those are snacks I grew up with and definitely brings back some nostalgia. Keep up the good work
As a Singaporean growing up in the 90s, my favorite snack is the Kong Guan biscuit. There are a few of these varieties but mostly biscuit sandwiches with lemon custard cream, chocolate or pineapple jam.
Some of those snacks are really old from over 40 years ago, which others are relatively new. For example, if salted egg fish skin is your childhood snack, I guess you are probably still a child. While stuff like the white rabbit candy or the fish satay were around for much longer. There are quite a few other snacks, but some are no longer available or very difficult to find in Singapore. Love how the Japanese are brutally honest with their reactions. ;)
Actually the salted egg fish skin is not a childhood snacks...the dried freezed durian is also not..lol The rest more or less. You are missing out the small button biscuits with the colourful icing tops. There's also this big round thin light colourful waffle-like biscuits. Loved how your friends loved some of the snacks.😊
This is so cute! Thanks, Ghib, for introducing SG flavours to your friends ! And you definitely have the distinct Singaporean accent already 😂 My favourite is POPO!
haha their reactions are so interesting. love how one of them just immediately goes OISHII for almost everything. i think Mamee and Fancy Gems would have been interesting to review too
I absolutely love durian haha but it's fine we know that not everyone can appreciate the taste and smell. Not all Singaporeans appreciate it too. But a big shout out to your friends who are willing to give it a try.
Hi Ghib, when you said the jackfruit is おねちゃん てき な・its so funny 😅,, i like durian too, the dodol durian (durian cake), for oyatsu i like pienaple tart lah,, i will look for that moutwash tmrw, looks fresh , 皆さん のexpression omosiroi ne hehe when they try the Durian,, 😂😅,,, oh Ghib just remember i tried that Nonio mouthwash before, i bought it at isetan Supa yes it was refreshing, 👍😅
My favourite childhood snack is twisties. The packaging is still very much the same after all these years. It is still very popular. Another of my favourite is Ken Ken cuttlefish.
I Believe the haw flakes used to taste alot better, recently bought a pack to try since I haven't tried it in years. And after trying one portion of it, I nvr touched it again and it's in my fridge now for mths😂😂
Ah there are some childhood snacks not featured though, wished you featured "seaweed sedge nori" snack or "dahfa fish snack" I was pleasantly surprised when the prawn rolls came out - that was an epic inclusion! 🎉
I love your friends' honest reactions! 🤣 My favs are the satay and popo snacks even tho they're more old school hehe but I found it really interesting that many of your friends mentioned they wanted more flavour! Thanks for this awesome video Ghib~
Durian always the killer haha! Majority doesn't like the smell but pretty sure they'll appreciate it more if they ignore the smell and focus on the taste lol!
Please have more "Japanese try Singapore food for 1st time series!" 😆 Some ideas Instant noodle that are easily available in Singapore. (Probably not common in Japan?) [Eg. Prima Taste instant noodle, Maggi, Koka, Myojo, Indomie] Various Milo in Singapore kind [3 in 1, Gao Siew Dai, Australia formula, can, carton] Yakult of different flavour.. 😁
It brings me a lot of nostalgic seeing all these childhood snacks. I remember there is also the flower biscuit, ear biscuit(there are 2 types), kaka(not seen anymore), mamee etc. I used to like the white rabbit candy and chilli tapioca snack when i was little. 😄
I tried the Pola snack recently, it tastes different now, less flavour (I remember it to be saltier) & less crunchy. And the half-hearted printing on the biscuits was sad too 😅
James! How can he make a casual appearance like this without updating what’s he doing now 😆 nice video, should have let them use the mouth wash after the durian
Is it true White Rabbit had to change its recipe many years ago, as it was found one of the ingredients may have been carcinogenic? A SG colleague told me this recently 😂 cleverly edited video Ghib 👏
as a singaporean who grew up in the 2000s, i love some childhood snacks shown and there are some i have never seen/heard and a few that i really didn’t like, like the haw flakes and probably the durian snack (i never tried it but i hate durian so haha, sgreans either love or hate durian and im the latter). other than that, it was great to see japanese’ reaction to our childhood snacks and that they love it too! personally, im not a fan of seafood and i can,t take spicy food, but i love salty food which is quite different from how you described singaporeans (which could be just a stereotype, majority or the general public of singaporeans, maybe im just weird haha)
the satay is one of my favorite and more affordable snack from my childhood. only 5cents each stick (in 1980s, or is it 3 sticks? anyone remember the price??). if i want a snack and save money. this would be it.
That's quite a lot snacks. Btw I'm a Chinese Malaysian from Penang & i like to eat that kerepek belinjo/belinjau by 'dipping' it into caster sugar or by sprinkling caster sugar on it
Great business opportunity for you to tie up with some export companies to promote/sell Sg snacks to the Japanese! Someone should open an Sg version of Don-Don Donki in Japan selling Sg and SE Asian products!
What's your favorite snack in Singapore?
Fish skin
They called satay sticks 😅😅
Super Ring😂😂

Company added melamine (kind of plastic) in the sweet to save cost on milk powder. Was a big criminal offence in China fee years’ ago
@@katetang1372 not added by the company. it was added by milk supplier which affected all milk products in the whole country.
I guess what we can learn from this video is that Japanese people like beer
For sure🤣!
as a singaporean who grew up in the 2000s, i love some childhood snacks shown and there are some i have never seen/heard and a few that i really didn’t like, like the haw flakes and probably the durian snack (i never tried it but i hate durian so haha, sgreans either love or hate durian and im the latter). other than that, it was great to see japanese’ reaction to our childhood snacks and that they love it too! personally, im not a fan of seafood and i can,t take spicy food, but i love salty food which is quite different from how you described singaporeans (which could be just a stereotype, majority or the general public of singaporeans, maybe im just weird haha)

My favorite snacks is the prawn rolls which is spicy and crispy and my next one will be rabbit sweets, it made from China.
Eat Belinjo with sambal belacan (I recommend Wahyu brand) if you are good with spicy food. (I'm not joking!)
Sounds amazing, will try it next time!
