I really do not understand what the hell the problem is and why people feel so compelled to go to these universities. I think it's all hype. It feels as if these uni's are shrouded in holywood like celebrity fog.
They are and they're not. I do think a lot of the students there exist in a bubble, and there appears to be a lot of self-congratulating and grandstanding due to being 'the best in the world'. It seems kind of distasteful and grotesque when I see videos or pictures of the formal dinners they have in their colleges multiple times a week. And, of course, due to the admissions system and just the status Oxbridge has, I imagine a lot of people place their self worth on the basis of them being there and studying. However, at the same time, some of the smartest people I knew went to Oxbridge, and I know for maths and physics at least, the pace and rigour of the content taught there exceeds that of the rest of the UK (I can't speak for American universities). So much so, that a lot of academic researchers in those fields have often spent time at Oxbridge either as an undergraduate, postgraduate, or postdoc. I'm in two minds about Oxbridge, on one hand it creates a bubble for people to perpetuate elitism and on the other it does produce outstanding research and excellent graduates, and it's fucking hard lol.
@@mitsterful I feel like the elitism is only really felt by the students already from elite backgrounds and the ones from state schools remember their roots. Then again I don't go to Oxbridge, do you?
i'm still recovering from post-interview rejection from cambridge. Thank you for breaking down this issue!
