Had to chuckle about the difference of the last two videos uploaded. Lexus gets trunk struts, actuators, console lid worked on while the BMW has in-depth engine overhaul. Such a difference haha. Love the content and can't wait to see the cars when they're done!
To be fair, we haven't seen if the 430 is gonna need anything, especially once it gets a supercharger. Their transmissions aren't especially strong so they may need to beef some stuff up depending on how much power they're gonna make.

That main seal removal being sped up in a timelapse and still taking long with multiple different tools at different angles is PEAK BMW engineering. I was cracking up.
Those bearings aren't the worst, but the bottom line is that they were still worn. You've spent more time and effort changing other parts on it, so I hope you feel that it was well worth it. You have nothing to worry about now.

I am a reliability engineer and oil analysis are always subjective if not done frequently. Engines are usually difficult to diagnosis with these because the oil is frequently changed. In your case maybe 3 years ago the copper content was higher but we can''t confirm. This is why having a trend of oil analysis is good but i understand thats it not cheap. In the manufacturing industries we will usually use it to confirm a problem seen by something else (vibration analysis usually). These types of bearing are not even picked up by vibration analysis anyway so the best way is always to inspect them visually. It is a labor intensive job but its cheaper than running them until they trash the engine. Good job looking it up !

I get a Blackstone oil analysis performed each oil change. However after seeing those S65 rod bearings bearings and the corresponding oil report I was having second thoughts about continuing to get them. Your comment gives me some piece of mind about still utilizing the analysis but focusing more on trends than a singular report.

The block is alusil compound, has different rate of corrosion than the oil pan/timingcase and heads.
Isn't alusil only sprayed on cylinder walls?
@@idokwatcher2062 that's Nikasil. Alusil is the material of the block, a blend of aluminum and silicon. This material, when chemically etched (as is done to the cylinder bores), has a very hard and slightly porous surface (good for maintaining a film of oil and resisting wear).
Those bearings looked like EJ25 bearings with 11 miles on them 🔥😀

Dang dude this hurt my feelings ahahah.. blew my ej with a massive rod knock.. disassembled the whole engine only to find out 1 of the bearings completely shattered to tiny bits... expected after 260k kms (160k miles) and 20lbs of boosting every single day.. mechanic said it probably starved from oil during cornerings as the oil would oil slush up on one side of the pan.. oh well.. got a new one in there with upgraded rods and pistons, oil pan with an oil catch basket so it doesnt move around and upgraded oil pump+cooler.. all good now and running at 24psi @ 415whp

From someone that started down this path a couple years ago, it’s great to see another M5 Touring build. When I did my rod bearings they looked fine but had already purchased all the bits so...I typically purchase everything from FCP but ECS offered WPC treated bearings. I spring for those.
As for your hassle with the S62 on the engine stand, that’s too relatable! From trusting 4 bolts, rotating it and then things getting in the way.
Great job and Paul is a great guy to help out as well. He’s helped me over the years.
How’s the WPC treated bearing compared to stock?
@@Ola_Bjorsvik check out some videos here on RUclips. The simplified description is, they are treated using a process which reduces friction be being coated which wears off. It’s amazing to see the metals they treat and the results they have. You can use it on gears, transmissions, etc.

Had never needed a torque angle gauge before. Went to Princess Auto this morning and saw a Gearwrench torgue angle gauge in surplus section. I now own a torque angle gauge.
I think oil tests are a good tool. I worked for a battery company. Our trucks were nearly always maxed out because ideally for every battery you sell you want to collect a core. The owner ran synthetic oil in the motor, transmission and axles and he had the oil analysis done. Those trucks are still going with the original power train. That impressed me. I own a Ram and some Hemi engines are having lifter and camshaft problems, so I'm doing the oil analysis to get an idea of how the motor is wearing.
They are useful. I towed my trailer through the Rockies, and after 5000km got the oil tested. I then put on 5000km of short town driving and a little towing. Around town was alot harder on the oil and motor. Since the Ram is my daily I like getting a better idea in how the motor is doing. Also with the price of a replacement being so expensive I want this truck to last a while.

As an AMG guy, seeing some of the pieces of this engine and how well they are designed, makes me appreciate it and forgive rod bearings a little more. On the contrary, some of the design is terrible... Still an M113 guy, but man, wish we got those headers and ITB intake from factory back then!

Mmm, I have fond memories of doing this to my E39 M5 in my garage back in the day. I bought it and the rod bearings were completely trashed so I did the job on my back on jack stands (not fun!). It turned out just fine and I had a great time with the M5 afterwards, those were the golden days.
Doing that job on the floor. Your a mad man. Should they consider the timing guides while it's out of the car?

Haha how ironic you guys are doing this job! We completed the same job and then some with changing the main bearings as well on a S65 BMW engine so definitely can understand the stress associated with the job. Currently building a supercharged S65 1M in Ontario as well if you want to check it out!

This episode is exacly why I sold my E39 M5. I loved it and enjoyed it but I'm simply done with BMW V8. I "downgraded" to S52 engine (I've put it in my E39 528 along with 5 speed manual). Yes, I've lost bunch of HP and torque but working on inline 6 is such a joy and it's fast enough for me. With just completed custom exhaust (the whole system) I'm at around 3500 lbs which makes my E39 500 lbs lighter than M5 and it has real steering, lol.
I love how changing bearings turns into replacing everything "while we're in here." The bane of my life, lmao.

The bearings on mine went at 195k miles... changed them with the engine in the car over a weekend. About a $1000 job. But yea, the “while you’re in there” can get really expensive.
How did you know they went out? What were the symptoms?

I'd have been tempted to check the mains while I was in there even if they aren't a weak point in that engine.
BMW: Here for a good time, not a long time.
Perfect timing on the bearing repair. Any longer and a knock would develop eventually pumping shavings throughout the engine and the repairs would have been much more extensive. Most of the bearings I see (in the commercial diesel industry) once the soft metal/polymer layers disappear the bearings have a handful of hours at full load before everything comes apart.

I had the same oil analysis results with my E90 M3's S65 engine. Blackstone results came back normal but I replaced the bearings anyway. They were on their last legs.

For the flywheel removal I purchased a cheap set of deep Allen sockets from harbor freight...and ground down the sides of the proper size until it fit through the holes..didn't take much....and no need to buy the special tool..

This is something I didn't do when I was a younger mechanic, but now, man I prefer spending (and not wasting I guarantee you) a few minutes chasing threads, cleaning, blowing with air, brake cleaner, brushing, triple checking, clean the bolts I'm reusing that are exposed to dirt etc, it makes you life much easier. And when you assemble everything back, you can make the difference between "it must be crap somewhere" vs "I'm sure I'm pulling the threads right now". About the bearings it's hard to tell, it's a matter of clearance, whether you race it or dialy it, long vs short trips, very cold start or not etc. Those bearings could have done more with good oil, relaxed driving and longer trips with nice oil temp I'd say. Of course in the long term it could have been worse and risking damaging the crank isn't worth it anyway

Mitsubishi's are a pig to work on. The plugs and fasteners are just cheap quality and a few always either break or strip out. Love the 4G63 fundamentally for it's strength and tunability. Hate the connectors that randomly break

It's all relative just different processes and methods to working on them. I've loved doing stuff in my vw it's a dream compared to the Subaru in the garage

Those bearings show alot of detonation, not worn from lack of oil lubricity or oil starvation, but the fact they're worn at around the 11-12 o'clock position shows theyve been slamming into the crankshaft on the compression stroke ever so slightly thats normal to see on an engine with violent combustion taking place thanks to detonation usually caused with firing the ignition that much to early ie spicy tuning even from factory
As if the engine doesnt have knock detection, dont think your explantion is correct
@@ΘάνατοςΧορτοφάγος Knock protection wont prevent an engine from knocking, it minimises it.
Also knock sensors arent all that great at detecting knock quite frankly. Ive done many a data log on engines with zero knock registered but peppering all over the spark plugs indicating knock. Knock sensors are bolted to the outside of most engines. Spark plugs are right there in combustion chamber where its all happening. I'll take my eyes and what physics are telling me over what a computer says all day everyday.
This is normal wear on the uppers for bmws. Have a look around and you will see that is the wear pattern, not from detonation.

The block usually looks different because its a different type of alloy. Had the same with some other engines
The oil analysis just shows that the bearings are still okay and would tell you when they've worn through the copper. Not the end all be all on engine health but will definitely tell you when it's time for a rebuild.
The words you need are babbitt and backer. The babbitt is the soft outer layers designed to absorb the occasional contact and protect the crank. The backer is usually made of steel, supports the babbitt, and spreads the load on the rod and block journals.

that is the best m engine ever made, they did not have rod bearings issues as the s85 engine, and the most reliable m engine
Had a friend with an e60 m5 and he kept pouring sooo much money, and when the smog and rod bearings failed he called it quits, but far out nothing sounds better like it

One oil analysis usually won’t tell you much. The benefit comes in doing it at regular intervals over an extended period of time. It allows you to see deltas during this time span which could indicate issues. Worth it for lifer cars in your stable.
My S62 block has the same look. I think it just resists corrosion much better than the surrounding materials.

This is why you do regular oil analysis. Those bearings still have life in them but once you hit the soft layer they will wear super fast. Oil analysis will show critical level.
There was an issue with the Nikasil bores pitting on early cars so might be a factory replacement block

I agree with some commenters. Based on the internals, this engine has had some long engine change intervals. As such, probably makes sense to change to chain guides since you already had the oil pain and valve covers off. Not that much more work, particularly with the engine on the stand.
The stark difference between the BMW and Lexus is insane but also very entertaining I'm really glad you picked these two cars... I'm team Lexus bcuz I own an old LX470 but looking forward to a good battle in the end ... Great content guys!
rod bearings are a ticking time bomb, all of my friends have had bmws myself included have spun bearings, 2 E46 M3 S54, 2 S52's lack of attention to bearings goes boom

I'm not surprised blackstone said copper is normal, those bearings are hardly worn at all. These engines didn't really suffer with bearing issues like the S62 and S65 engines do. I think since you're in there though you might as well replace if you are confident doing the job. Good call on BMW parts, makes sense since the originals lasted so well.
Yeah...When I had a BMW, I was getting parts from FCP euro all the time too.
This engine was using sae30 oil, because of that, there were a small wear (also in the oil analysis, the viscosity was sae30). Keep using this viscosity but with high ZDDP (like amsoil signature or the best oil, Redline High performance ) for your little track usage, for high track usage better sae40. (yeah, for M cars, since 90s the oil have improved)

They did have more left in them, but good thing you did it. I still think a lot of the problems for these bearing is caused by drivers not waiting for the car to properly warm up and the thick oil BMW recommends. BMW did not suddenly forget how to design engines.

Welcome to BMW M power, this is why I kept with my M54!, though the reason why gaskets start to leak on all engines is heat cycling. NBR rubber perishies after a couple of years.
The highest performance sedan with a 394hp N/A V8 from the late 90’s that’s high mileage, driven hard, not maintained well and they’re surprised at all the problems 😆 The Lexus was probably owned by a senior citizen that saw the dealer twice a year, driven accordingly, and a model that’s only just being acquired by a younger crowd in the last few years to even see hard driving😋
Bmw sometimes puts a date on newer warranty parts installed on vehicles so you can go by the production date of the car and then look for the production date of the oil pan and if the oil pan doesn’t match the production date of the car then you know it had an oil pan installed in it’s lifetime
