Stevie Wonder wrote the song, and taught it to the band during some rehearsals. The song is fire.

Rufus feat. Chaka Kahn was the funkiest ensemble to emerge in the early 70s. "Tell Me" was written by the one and only Mr. Stevie Wonder and was their first big hit, crossing over from the R&B charts to MOR pop radio. They became a staple during the disco era with "Do You Love What You Feel", "Once You Get Started" and "I'm Every Woman" which became an anthem for Whitney Houston in the 90s.

My wife and I were out with another couple to introduce them to Greazy Meal -- a band we would see on Sunday nights in Minneapolis. So the singer, Julius, spots a beautiful woman who had just entered the club. It was Chaka Khan, and she was wearing a gorgeous, blue velvet outfit. Julius asks / begs her to join them on the stage, and she agrees. The band breaks into "Tell Me Something Good," and Julius and Chaka duet the entire thing live. It was epic. I'm lucky enough to have the audio from that evening directly from the soundboard.

Chaka Khan sings so many songs that are on my playlist.
Every time I listen to the song that she is singing, it always seems to be 'my favorite'.
"Tell Me Something Good" was the first hit song by Rufus. That was 50 years ago!
It's unbelievable because Chaka Khan is still selling out all of her concerts.
    Today!
The most amazing thing I realized is Chaka Khan grew up in Chicago.
Minnie Riperton, The Emotions and Lani Hall (lead vocalist for Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66) also from Chicago. All four of these brilliant musical talents were growing up about the same time.
I've heard Chaka Khan say that if she didn't win a talent contest then it would be The Emotions that won.
Ashley, you're really making me laugh when you said "They killing me with that breathing".

I grew up in a very strict, religious home. I was 22 when this song was released and starting to break away from what I considered to be religious hypocrisy and oppression. Performers like Chaka Khan seriously helped me to find my freedom.
It was an amazing, amazing time to be alive; society changes, black people really starting to claim our power - and the music. OH, my god, the MUSIC!!! 😮

Then, at the end of the 70s, this "new" thing called (Rap music) was introduced, and nobedy EVER thought it would gain the popularity throughout the world that it has today!.....Did it (evolve) music up?...or did it (devolve) music down?.....lol YOU be the judge.
