Mamoru Oshii says in an interview with Hideaki Anno from a 1993 Chars Counterattack Fan Club Book, "When I saw Ideon, I believe it was when I was working on The Wonderful Adventures of Nils at Pierrot, it gave me such a shock. And it became the topic of discussion among directors at the studio. We wondered if it was okay to make something like that." According to Oshii, Tomino broke two specific taboos that existed in anime at the time with Ideon and Gundam. Those being the destruction of bodies and expressing your own political beliefs in your anime. If you wanted to express your own political beliefs in your anime you had to disguise it as a joke or metaphor like what Oshii did in Urusei Yatsura.
That's what make Tomino great, he really pushed the medium forward, even though I dissagree with almost all his crazy political beliefs, I love his work.
The most hotblooded anime is also the most frightening and there's a terrible awe about the escalation of violence. Was the Ide right? Do we deserve this? It's a terrific and terrifying anime.
I have often thought that Tomino had two major themes in his works: 1) The cost of war's brutality meant there were no true winners, just survivors. 2) Child Soldiers were one of the most tragic parts of warfare and paid the highest cost. Pity that many modern versions of his franchises like Gundam have seemed to forget this (i.e Gundam Build)

It's absolutely breathtaking. I don't know how any actor can ever top it. Shioya did only a few roles after Ideon before becoming a voice director, and I wonder if it was because there was no place left to go as an actor.

Its kinda hard to find a show more brutal than one that has no problem depicting a toddler being decapitated and none of the characters around even acknowledges it.

"So, who won? The good guys or the bad guys?"
*"No."*
Ideon won. The bad guys lost. Unfortunately, the bad guys were everyone in the universe not named Ideon.
Buff clan start it first though.@@SBaby

Good old "Kill em all" Tomino
I bet Tomino had relatives living in Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the nukes were dropped

Iron Blooded Orphans is your answer
Build fighters isnt meant to be nearly as serious as gundam at all.. Its just a celebration and marketing tool for the modelers in the community

Gotta be honest, the happy music provides some ironic contrast to the sheer slaughter and carnage on display
The final explosion in be invoked always gives me goosebumps.
Gotta love that jazzy upbeat music while light-speed missiles trash planets
Something to help with the trauma.
Thought this was gonna be one of those analysis video essay things talking about the show.
Nope, just a clip compilation.
No matter how many times I tried talking about the brutality in this, I was never satisfied, and decided to let the anime do the talking.

All the war related ways people die in this somehow make the one guys body being eaten by a swarm of fish hilarious.
