- This Norwegian 24 hour SR92 was a very transitional, somewhat bulky throwback to the modern single meal variation currently issued to the Norwegian Armed Forces. This review was a real blast from start to finish. With corroded codfish caviar, whole meal biscuits decomposed down into mush, overly acidic coffee, beef stew with a horrendous nacho cheese-syle sauce, slightly stale tropical fruit soup, and a super dry and not overly sweet dark chocolate bar, this 24 hour ration really had it all.

I recently had something crawl into my dryer vent and die. Because I don't have a dryer instead of pushing air out of my house, it pulls air (and the smell) in. So, unfortunately I can imagine the "dead frog in a terrarium" fragrance all too well.

Norwegian here. There is absolutely no cheese in that stew, which I've eaten many times, so that smell and taste must come from some weird process over the years. Also the mackerel in tomato was probably fine. It always smells extremely bad, but the taste is quite okay (and probably a bit aquired), especially with some mayo. The rations when I served in 2000 were very similar to this one. I can't remember them including caviar (i might be wrong though), but there were small tubes of bacon and/or ham flavoured spreadable cheese that were nice to sqeeze into the freeze dried meal for some added taste and texture. There was also a pack of malt candies. They tasted quite bad, but went down ok for some quick carbs when you were wet, tired and hating life. I would often trade them for coffee, though, from my non caffeine addicted squad mates. The chocolate was A+ and probably the best part of the pack :)

The mackerel when it's within the date, is fine, although requires that acquired taste of yours. However, it's a good 20+ years off and it will smell and taste 20+y off.
Canned mackerel is kind of hit and miss depending on what country or brand cans it. I've had some that was pretty mild tasting/smelling and some that was like someone had canned beach muck during low tide before letting it fester for awhile in the sun.
It scares me that he keeps saying that it tastes strongly of cheese, what kind of nasty process made that happen?? Gives me the shivers just thinking about it

every day i am concerned for this man's well being, everytime he posts a new video i feel a surge of relief flow through me. But everytime he eats these old ass MREs i immediately feel panic again.

with all the preservatives he eats he'll probably keep moving for a few weeks after his heart stops beating and unless they cremate him, his body will probably still look pretty fresh in a few decades. I knew a guy who survived off TV dinners, microwave popcorn, and vending machines for most of his life and the dude didnt have a grey hair in his 60s and could outwork people half his age. After awhile the stuff just pickles you.

"Best before 1995..." Much like my soul. I was born in '92. At least I had 3 good years. Thanks for the interesting and informative videos Steve! I still go back and watch old ones I've seen numerous times after a while. I love your dedication to studying and publicly displaying (and tasting!) the contents of MREs from across time and across the planet that most of us would never see otherwise. Seeing things like what my grandfather would have been eating for lunch during WWII is absolutely fascinating to me.
Steve, you mentioned MRE Mountain a few times in some of your vids and I decided to order from them. You are absolutely correct, MRE Mountain is has a cool shop and is very nice! Thank you for your recommendation and your vids! I’m a vet and I love what you do, you’re informative and very entertaining. You give us vets something to talk and laugh about that’s not all the doom and gloom side of military life. I had a feeling that one would sound weird to some folks. The pulp of that marmalade has a texture that is almost like a cross between some sort of finely pulled meat and a mushroom. And even that still probably sounds odd.
