      Not that long for me and I do the same thing. When I'm on my wheel, I put my tablet to RUclips and listen sometimes watch other vids. There's so much info to be learned yet.

    I appreciate you taking time to respond. I may try and build the bumble bee scotch tension on. Thank you

      probably the hardest part will be the bar that works the footman. I did a product review but the plan is to do one on using one. the footman have to move freely so the wheel turns. we have a wood shop as well but that metal part would put a stop to our making one. otherwise, it's all the same process of the wheel and pedals working . Good Luck on your task!

      I know your healing and a busy person. Do you have any sketches and or dimensions I could use to make one? Does your improvement make a significant difference? Thanks so much for your time responding

      if it's the thrifty fox you are wanting to make the plans on the etsy website are superb! they are exact, detailed and worth every penny. the bumble bee is a flyer wheel. we haven't changed the thrifty fox wheel to a flyer simply because i have the bumble bee. I do encourage anyone who wants to spin to start on a spindle because you get the dynamics of spinning early on as opposed to starting on a flyer wheel and then moving to a spindle. The spindle gives you the experience of learning that 45 degree angle and helps you understand the concept of ratios, in my opinion. had i started spinning on a flyer, i never would have wanted a spindle wheel. So i'm personally glad that i did begin with the thrifty fox because now i own a Great Wheel and that alone is a whole new concept of spinning as it's the large one and sitting is not an option. now it's not only the angle but full body movement. Women back in the day where known to have put in over 20 miles just spinning enough yarn to make a sweater. The thrifty fox plans are honestly perfect. the only change we made to the plans is where the weights are. We moved them to the outside of the wheel and added a few more washers so once it passes the noon position, the weight of the washers carries the wheel without lots of foot pressure on the pedal. otherwise, it's exactly as it is in the plans.so if building a wheel is your goal, i would honestly start with the thrifty fox. the flyer wheel is easy enough to put together except the bar the rotates the footman unless you weld too. the flyer device, on average, will run you $100 just for that and with $100 or less, you can create the fox wheel and have a great learning experience. With reclaimed lumber and a used bike wheel.. your main costs will be the carriage bolts.

    Nice explanations! And I like your wheel! One suggestion? Countersink your bolts. I always manage to drag knuckles across stuff like that and skin them.

      I have plans to do an updated one cause i've learned more since this one. Unfortunately, I have fractured my left foot and although it's 8 weeks for it to heal, have planned to get this one done first since i wont need my left foot to make the wheel spin. i do however, have to stay off of it for another week and then i can start working with it. Thank you for commenting and watching. I'm not a pro by any means but Hope you're learning a few extra tips to help out!

      did you say you liked the bumble bee one better than thrifty fox?

    • @rswcreatives
      @rswcreatives  7 лет назад

      actually yes. The thrifty fox wheel is a spindle wheel with one pedal. Right now with a fractured foot, the fox is the only one i can use because it works my right foot to make the whorl move. I love both but after a span of time, my leg and calf muscles start to cramp and I have to stop. the Fox is perfect for long draft spinning like lincoln wool that has a longer fiber. The bumble bee is a scotch tension wheel with two pedals. the Bee, I can sit in the living room with everyone else on tv night and spin without having to pull on a long draft. I can sit in my glider chair, both feet working with little strain and still get yarn spun easily. I have also acquired a Great wheel from the 1800s but it's till getting some repair to make it work. that one requires standing and walking back and forth as there isn't a pedal at all but is worked with hand turning. So out of the three wheels, the Bumble bee scotch tension wheel is my favorite as i have better control of the fiber, better control of the thickness of yarn and less strain on muscles. I have, in the last few months, spent and entire day doing nothing but spinning on the Bee and didn't have any aches. I got lots done since my mother is a weaver and she uses mostly yarn I make for her rugs and blankets.the only wheel i don't have is what they call Irish tension ( even tho the Irish didn't start it) but it has a leather brake on the top cause the band is on the bobbin.

      thanks. i do love spinning. i have so much wool to card it's not funny. I still have wool from my very first attempt at spinning yet to be carded. I have to get better soon cause the loom is empty at the moment and well there's another rug in the works! Seems days go by too fast and I have too much to do to just spin anymore. With the seed group, the craft group and our small booth at the flea market.. there just isn't enough hours in the day anymore. Hopefully I can get some quiet time to get a new one done. Can go thru and explain things a bit better. My first videos were done with an Ipad cause it's all i had at the time. Now i have a good camera on a tripod so i can get better videos done. this foot being bound is a problem but it will heal in time and i'll be off to the races again! Have fun spinning your fiber!!

    What do I do if spindle isn’t removable how do I combine two spindles of yarn together?

    • @rswcreatives
      @rswcreatives  2 года назад

      You will have to ball what's on the spindle and then you can combine your two together as ply. If your going to ply it directly after spinning it, you will have to be watchful of twisting since the fiber is still in tension. Using a knitty knotty can help to release tension from yarn you have just finished spinning. Does that help?

    Hi, Phoebe,
    My aunt's name is also Phoebe. You are the only other person I know of with that beautiful name!
    I am about to begin making a Thrifty Fox wheel, and am wondering if you have done the conversion to the flyer yet. I saw the video on your channel of someone who had done the conversion, but he also made a whole bunch of other modifications and didn't give a lot of details regarding converting to the flyer. I would love to have your details if you've done this.
    Thanks, Melanie Perkins

    • @rswcreatives
      @rswcreatives  8 лет назад

      +Melanie Perkins Sorry it took so long to see this. My apologies!! I have not converted to a flyer on my thrift fox. I am debating it considering the costs of the flyer wheels. It's something I'm looking at doing although I did find a flyer and bobbin set up and it's just a matter of mounting it to a new bracket on the thrifty fox. Now that i know someone else is looking at doing the same, I will certainly post about it. The flyer attachment is about $140 as opposed to the whole wheel which is about $500 .. lots of savings there. Thanks for watching and posting. I'll keep ya posted on that flyer change

    • @rswcreatives
      @rswcreatives  8 лет назад +1

      +Melanie Perkins I think my biggest change on the thrifty fox pattern is where i put the weights. I did put them as far from center as possible and not only did we lock them in with a bolt we zip tied them so they don't move. I find the wheel spins much easier with the weights at the edge instead of close to center. Gives better spin to the wheel that way! Good luck with your spinning!

    once you have spun the wool and taken it off the spindle how do you stop the wool untwisting itself?

    • @rswcreatives
      @rswcreatives  8 лет назад +2

      when you spin wool.. spin clockwise. either put it in a ball or use the bracelet method and slip it over your wrist. Then put it back to the wheel to ply it and that will go counter clockwise. if you ply clockwise it will continue the twist and that wont work. Now, once you have plyed yard... use a knitty knatter ( buy or make one) and once you have it in a loop... take it to the sink. start with cold water and dawn dishwashing liquid. wash it good in cold water... and then turn the water towards hot. keep rinsing in hot water. my water is 140 degrees so once it gets where i can't handle the temp anymore, turn back to cold. This locks the color in the yarn and also felts the wool so it doesn't unravel. Then hang it up and let it dry. I might have a video for that but if not i can do one for you. Let me know how that works for you. if your wool is not holding a twist, did you card it or did you spin too light. I spin my wool tight. if i take the tension off the string, it will bundle up fast. try that.. if none of those work, drop me a note and i'll see if i can get something up to help you
