    I didn't get into "the scene" until after Black Flag had shut down, but a friend had them crash in her apartment when their usual place in that town was unavailable. She said that Henry and Kira were extremely polite, Bill was funny but kept falling asleep, and Greg was so busy in his own head that he didn't say a dozen words. But, they were all very grateful when she cooked them dinner at 2 am, and even moreso when she ran their laundry through the building's laundry machines.

    Punks back then were some of the most judgemental people in the whole rock scene, the amount of spit, bottles and cans of beer, chairs and other objects henry and the band took from 80 to 86 is unmeasurable, thats why i respect henry for his insane dedication to music despite the various disappointments with the "fans", you may hate henry (for whatever silly reason, i mean he never killed anyone or commited crimes), but the commitment he had for music is something that 99% of people wouldn't be able to take even for a fraction, and i appreciate their dedication to staying original since My War instead of being just another generic boring predictable hardcore punk band despite the whole spit, beating and judging

      @@johnchedsey1306 Gatekeeping is not always a bad thing. There are people you don't want in your community for various reasons. One such reason is those people aggressively changing the concept of what the community is about while kicking out all the original members and replacing them with like-minded people like them. Punk talks about being "rebels," "anarchists," "whatever ideology is anti this or that," or fighting the "man," yet most of your popular bands have signed record deals with major labels like Rage Against the Machine with Epic Records. Epic Records is owned by Sony Music Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, the North American division of Japanese conglomerate Sony. Punks, both old and modern, have majority views and support one of the establishments, which is not rebellious in any way, while creating checklists for someone to mark off to be part of the club. In reality, Punks are the biggest fucking hypocrites around, much like the hipsters. I enjoyed going to shows and meeting cool people. I even saw a black flag at the Blacksheep in Colorado Springs last April with friends from work. I like the community and what it stands for, but the reality is that the punks, like anyone else, are no stranger to hypocrisy and being judgemental fuckheads.

    • @chizorama
      @chizorama 6 месяцев назад +1

      The irony is that while the music was "inclusive"(for lack of a better term), the scene never really was. You were not accepted if you didn't "conform to the standard" back in the day, which was some of the most ironic hypocrisy I've ever witnessed.

    • @theblondesiouxsiesioux
      @theblondesiouxsiesioux 5 месяцев назад

      @@1618Cyrano Yeah I mean there are still some, depending where you go. But I never said there weren't. But punk actually isn't that wild anymore though, I haven't been to an actually wild punk show/party in probably 8 years. Just that it has changed a lot, and that punx are essentially hipsters, hippies, and yuppies with mohawks and studded jackets.
      Every now and then I'll find a punk who's actually cool, but for the most part most punks are too busy judging other punks by mainstream ideas of right or wrong. I'm de-facto kicked out of my local scene because I do what I want and don't care what the goody little two shoe fucks have to say. Punk shows 10 years ago and longer were the shit, like real chaos, venues getting shut down, cops showing up, fist and knife fights, people having sex in bathrooms, and girls kissing eachother while everyone took pictures.
      I haven't gone to a show where any of that has happened in at least 7 years, now "punks" get upset over that sort of stuff and try to cancel people from the seen.
      These days most punks just look down their noses at me because I don't look like "a lefty punk", but all they'll ever do is just look at me like they're cunts.
      Case and point is that punk is changing for the worse, and most punks these days are just regular ol good citizens who wanna look different. I mean, they'll mostly be gone in another 5 years, because it's remarkable for most punks to stay punk past age 22. But whatever.
      Point: I never said ALL punks are boring
      ......just the overwhelmingly vast majority of them. Like I may as well go to the democrat national convention than a punk show, everyone is gonna be saying the same stuff, parroting what the singer of the band says is right or wrong, and everyone is a straight laced chump. So yeah.

    • @theblondesiouxsiesioux
      @theblondesiouxsiesioux 5 месяцев назад

      @@chizorama Which is great. I mean a subculture should have codes of conduct, otherwise what's the point of said sub-culture? You're just normal people if you don't live up your subcultures standards. Which is what I'm talking bout here. Punks say there are no rules to being punk, which is an absolute falsehood. Like, are Nazis accepted in the main punk scene? No. Not really. Most punks say you can't be racist or homophobic and be punk still... So quite obviously there are rules, standards, and codes of conduct. We're just too ignorant as a culture to understand that there are actually rules. We also can't 100% agree on said rules, making things even messier.
      I for one want more good standards for punk rockers. Not any of this my 90 year old gramma is punk because she likes good charlotte and is an old cunt.
      Punk almost means nothing when you take the code of conduct away, then you're just a normal ass person.

    Black Flag is like if you make The Misfits and Danzig completely insane. Their fans aren't technically the worst music fanbases unlike others I've mentioned time and time again on this channel, but they get pissed easily if Black Flag changes styles that fit them for each era. The changes between members didn't help matters, as shit will continue to get violent; it's for the best you shouldn't be a fan of Black Flag, nor become a new member. They're that infamous, not for their band affiliates turning out as criminals, but the violence they caused is the turning point where Black Flag gets named no pun intended, the 'black sheep' of the punk scene. I hope Danzig gets discussed on this channel, cuz it would be pretty cool.

    This is more about sst, but apparently sst was not very good. The meat puppets had a entire saga to get the master tapes back so they could re-issue the albums they put out on that label. They did get them back, but they were apparently barely useable. I think the instagram image is still out there on what the masters look like. I kind of figured that might be why some SST stuff has never had a re-issue outside of black flag stuff.

    Greg Ginn is both one of the most important and most reviled people from American punk/hardcore. SST was one of the greatest labels of its time, documenting so many unique bands (most of which are actually better than the reputation that label sometimes gets). But Ginn also alienated people, held lifelong grudges and has been an absolutely terrible curator of the label's legacy. His refusal to pay royalties, or allow out of print albums to revert their rights back to the artists is a point of serious contention with former SST bands. And sadly SST basically turned into a vanity label for him to release a deluge of his own recordings no one cares about.
    Bands like Descendents, Husker Du and Minutemen all deserved fancy, remastered box sets of their classic material, but that'll never happen with Ginn.
    But yeah, Black Flag was monumentally important in music.

      Pop punk is one of the worst contridicted anomalies I've ever witnessed, a corporate creation pushed by MTV back in the 90's & one if the worst travisties ever perpetrated in music. They weren't brave, they were created. I burnt the screens for Greenday t-shirts months before Dookie came out. Just a cash grab mickey mousing a style of music never meant for mass consumption.

I look under rocks to find it. rock really suck now. Today it is mostly heavy metal crap and post grunge crap. I wish anti ninniva would come and send all heavy metal crap back to underground and save rock. Before 1990s pop punk was under ground. the descendants talk how hard it was in punk scene in 1980s. if did not play right style of music the punk crowd would attack you or be mean to you. With me I listen to mostly Christian pop punk. So a lot stuff people complain secular pop punk was not in christian pop punk.

    On the part where you explain their name representing anarchy, I actually have a potential origin story on where they may have gotten their name. There was a bs conservative tv series in the late 60s that was propagating lies about the psychedelic scene and they had Jack Kerouac and Ed Sanders of The Fugs on there & the host and some shmuck were basically condescendingly blaming them for the “violence in the hippie scene” and at about 38:58 Keroac chimes in sarcastically “There goes the black flag of Anarchy!” in response to one of the shmucks blame statements. I understand black flags have represented anarchy for a while but let me link ya’ll the video & you’ll see how this segment may have actually been influential to their band naming. Especially considering how influential The Fugs were to punk, it’s not impossible that they had been digging through old tape recordings of the show due to the influential underground figures in the segment:

The debut of the aforementioned 7" & gig were January '79. Between then & the release of their 2nd e.p Jealous again, Pettibone -Ginn's bro created the bar-logo.
