      I concur, it is the best punk album ever written, both the lyrics and the actual singing of them is just genius. Crass are actually musically underrated. the power and anger they generated and communicated. And how prescient the anger given the way things have gone since, the corporate death machine hasnt slowed down any. But yes Penis Envy is a masterpiece.. Death Church by Rudimentary Peni is also an overlooked classic.

  • @AliceBowie

    I'd consider Rudimentary Peni to be the most literally INSANE punk band. They were originally on crass records. So was sugarcubes. Steve Ignorant was in the first incarnation of Current 93, performing under the name Steve Intelligent.

    • @papusadrianus
      @papusadrianus 9 месяцев назад +11

      insane in terms of music? yea, though i wouldn't call them the most insane in terms of 'punk antics' like crass. honestly i'd say chumbawamba might be able to take the place if they were strictly punk.

    • @AliceBowie
      @AliceBowie 9 месяцев назад +38

      @papusadrianus I meant that Nik Blinko is schizophrenic and Rudi Peni was putting out records while Nik was living in a mental hospital. He was suffering from delusions about being historical figures like the pope and HP Lovecraft. But yeah, it's funny that Chumbawumba was on crass records, too. I was in college when tubthumpin came out, it was surreal to see them become mega popular for a few years.

    We managed to get an interview with Crass, they invited us up to their cottage, we bunked off school and "borrowed" my mum's car. They were really cool and we just chatted for an afternoon.

    Hey dude, i think you should listen to lucille bogan‘s „when the cows come home“ and „shave em dry II“, she was a blues singer/songwriter who recorded in the 1930s and her songs contained extremely explicit and witty sexual lyrics. i just discovered her randomly while listening to a blues playlist and even though you haven‘t done anything on blues you might find her songs interesting (and funny af). personally i was really fascinated and amused that stuff like this was recorded in the 30s and since you often do videos about odd musicians i thought you might like it. there‘s not a ton of information on her though, but you should definitely listen. love your videos!

    Nice Choice. Crass grabbed my attention with their cover art , foldout poster , information leaflet record cover's. Unrelenting graffiti campaigns ensued. The record label released a string of quality unknown bands. ( Mob , Zounds , Flux Of Pink Indians, Poison Girls , Rudimentary Peni ...)
    Anarchic & Eclectic.

    Crass were game changers, because unlike all the other poseurs and spiky heads gobbing and showing off, they actually really meant it and really knew how to lyrically and musically project the anger and antagonise the people they (rightly) despised. A band that had more influence on me personally, and the way I see the world, than any other. And Penis Envy is arguably (along with Death Church by Rudimentary Peni) the best punk album ever recorded. Absolute legends.

    Crass were one of the second wave of DIY punk who walked the walk, truly - the lived and some of the still do at Dial House the open commune. they gave all their money to different groups and would play the most out of the way obscure places where no other bands would play often for free. we organised a crass gig in our local hall, we at the time were putting on punk gigs as there was nothing to do in our little town and crass told us to keep all the money we got off the door so we could put on more gigs. i years later bumped into both Steve and also Penni at different times they are both amazing and fascinating people - i chatted to Penni for a long time as I was reading and had with me 'Zen, Beginners Mind' by Shunryu Suzuki and he practises zen philosophy and we talked about meditation that i had fairly recently started to practise daily meditation. Steve is working class and a fair bit younger than Penni who is from a much more middle class background but they through away the working class - middle class cliche. i would love to meet Gee and Eve as never got a chance to speak to them. check out 'there is no authority but yourself' documentary - its really good.

Roger the musician told this to me probably because crass didn’t do Blues ( the music ) or trippy stuff like Hawkwind which he enjoyed. Ah, Crass. I saw them at Reading town hall in 1980 and it was , without question, the best £1 I've ever spent. Crass, Poison Girls and Annie Anxiety all performed,. There were anti-war films played between each bands' sets and a weird, communal feeling, with an element of threat from the skinheads who showed up but, being intrinsically cowardly, didn't kick off due to being vastly outnumbered but spiky-haired punks with a lot of studded and-bullet belts that were mostly decorative but also defensive. When something did kick off at the front of the stage, Crass were prepared for this, as Penny's drum riser was skirted with halogen lamps that effectively blinded the audience, so that violence wasn't really possible. All in all, a brilliant night, especially when, during "They've Got a Bomb" the band stopped playing and stood stock still for at least a full minute, during which a film of the effects of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima atomic bomb blasts was played. If you know the song, you'll know where in the song I mean.
    Brilliant band, far better musically than given credit for, and who, by their own admission, had a limited shelf-life.

    Crass (who I saw quite a few times) were very far from 'insane'. They were independent artists who wanted to express their political and ideological ideas by using music as the vehicle. I'm also very far from sure that any member of Crass endorsed violence - that was the opposite of what the band stood for. Perhaps 'extreme' would have been a better description.

    Crass were a bunch of hippies. Rudimentary peni was an insane band, so much so that the singer was in an asylum.

    There was that time they drove Special Duties out of the scene for daring to criticize them for their nonsense/utopian take on charging a few pounds for kids to get into shows and criticizing the Clash and anyone who took a record deal, only to turn around and have some members put out that Chumbawamba Tubthumping garbage 20 years later
