My favorite Henry quote (on playing shows for sparse crowds):
"It doesn't matter how many people are there. I don't care if there are only two people out there. Those two people came out to see you, and it's not their fault nobody else showed up. You go out there and you give those two people the best fucking show of their lives."
That's actually a Chuck Dukowski quote, the original bassist from Black Flag. He said that to Henry early on when he joined the band and there was sparse attendance at a gig. Henry was apparently a little bummed by the lack of people there and wasn't fully into it. The Duke grabbed him and said that quote with the conviction Dukowski was known for, especially back then, which stuck with Rollins thereafter. And rightly so, it's a kick ass quote!

I have never seen Henry happy in an interview, and here he is smiling and laughing like a little kid. Sean is amazing, this went really well!
Weird, I've seen many recent interviews of him smiling and being pleasant. I think people just assume by his rocker days of his youth and that furrow brow of his and immediately thinks "angry". Sure he has that nickname "angriest man in rock" but he's really calm cool and collected, especially in interviews of the past 10 years.
@@girlanonymous Yeah, really. I rarely see him not smiling and being pleasant. To be fair, though, I've been a fan of his spoken word performances for a long time, which is basically just stand up storytelling. He's always been a pretty charming guy.

I've seen Henry Rollins eviscerate interviewers for being unprepared or unprofessional but I think it's very clear that Sean is well prepared, so Henry relaxed a bit. I'm not 100% sure if that's the reason why, but it was cool to see a fun, goofier side of him
His questions were very interesting! He was very well prepared/knowledge/seamless and it made for an amazing interview

What I love about Henry is he just seems like a smart, well-read person who could be anything, a life-coach, a CEO, a rockstar, whatever his passions, or angry, led him to. That's what makes him so captivating and I think why he's been so successful.

He really did. I came for Rollins because I love old man Rollins but stayed for the varied and interesting questions. Definitely subscribing.
The one thing I've heard many guests say is"Wow that's a really good question." Sean has gotten better and better at this.
He didn't have to deal with an interviewer who was out of his depth. Sean tends to ask questions that are meant to help you relate to the interviewee, not to test their knowledge or depth in a given topic.
Absolutely. To simply be a person in front of Rollins whom he doesn't want to eviscerate is an achievement in itself and Sean, of course, pulled it off with aplomb.
Doesn't like or eat spicy food often, yet he eats every last wing without any liquids and is articulate the whole time with very little drama.

I met him after a show on a speaking tour. I wouldn’t exactly call him friendly, but he is absolutely genuine in that who he is on stage is who he is in a parking lot by his tour bus at 1am. No affectations or stage persona or whatever

Later edit: And I’ve read several of Henry’s interviews dating back to his first interviews with fanzines back in the early 80s and he’s really engaging in down to earth if the questions are interesting but incredibly dismissive if the questions are stupid and ignorant

He's _really_ mellowed with age. I didn't care for him for most of my life (especially the spoken word "angry white dude rants about his opinions" stuff). So for nearly 40yrs, I didn't like Rollins.
BUT THEN: I recently saw a clip of a show he did in Portland (Keep Talking, Pal) and I was FLOORED. Rollins was *happy* and *funny.* I ended up buying the show... It's hilarious.
I'm sure he still has his moments, but I love Rollins now, and I never thought I'd say that.

When Henry visited Mexico for the first time, me and a group of 10 friends, all crust punks, ran in excitement when we saw him arriving at the back of the venue, he was alone, no security and he thought we were gonna jump on him, when he saw that was not the case he was a bit relieved and agreed to take pictures with us and sign autographs lol

When i saw the thumbnail, i though "oooohhh, there is going to be hell on this show" but, fuck me, i was completely surprised by Henry, awesome, awesome guest, such a humble, knowledgeable and genuine guy, and he cleaned the board without being a hot wings guy and WITHOUT DRINKING ANYTHING WHATSOEVER! Easily one of the top guests, i could hear him talk for two more hours.

I've emailed Henry twice over the past 20 years. Always got a heartfelt response. Seen him many times live and never been disappointed. Dude is a walking advertisement for hard work and hustle.

Agreed. Compared to when he was younger, he seems much happier now. He still has his rage and anger, but he uses is it to fuel him. When he was younger he did that too, but I think it kind of consumed him before. Like someone said in the comments here his temperament has changed since he's aged. He's my biggest role model for sure. He's the real deal. Such a cool dude. I GET NOTHING!!!!

Like, that's a piece of life advice everyone could use- especially since it comes from this "battle hardened" hardcore pioneer who has also fit into other aspects of popular culture without sacrificing his character or sense of self.
Not sure many people caught that, but you did. I believe most people tend to hack away on their paths because pride gets in the way. Tearing down those personal barriers allows the scalpel to move in precision, but as Henry suggests keeping the intensity or rage. NICE!!!

I've seen Henry live twice. (Spoken word.) The first time, I was maybe 17 in 1997. The cost of admission was 2 cans of food (or money) that would be donated to a local homeless shelter. Tulsa, OK. Who else does that? Amazing dude.

I met Henry last year at one of his photography shows. I expected him to be super intimidating and he was so kind and took his time with everyone that wanted to speak with him. He is a real class act.
Wouldn't surprise me if he was sitting on a good size nest egg, and he just donates it to charity.
I met him about 27 years ago. He was exceedingly nice and gracious.
@@joelab9222 That's around the time I first met him. A friend in Atlanta took me to a "spoken word thing". But, it was just a group of people on a front porch in Athens, GA. listening to Henry banter on about this, that and the other. And in between his planned word constructs, he was just conversational. He would just randomly ask someone a personal question and then want to know more and more about them. My daughter had just been born(so that puts it at 28 years ago) and we ended up discussing her and he dove deep in asking the 20-year-old me how I was handling it, among other things. It was like a therapy session with a really intense and really nice therapist. About 8 years later, I ran into him at an event in Dallas, TX, and as soon as we made eye contact, I saw that light go on and he immediately asked how my daughter was, and that she must be around 8. We chatted for a few minutes and it was like catching up with an old friend.
Lucky you. No such luck with my encounters.
I also met him after one of the spoken word “photography” shows and he hung around, took pictures and signed stuff, not to mention conversing with everyone. Very humble, gracious guy !!!
Ive binge watched like 50 episodes. Rollins is the only dude ive seen that ate all of his wings and did it without a drink. This guy is a legend.

I'd be more likely to believe that a person who doesnt control their language is easier to read because their responses would probably be more emotionally based.
His remarks on Iran really hits closer to home these days and I really appreciate his perspective... Nobody wants war.
Unfortunately too many do. Especially those who ate to old or too rich or too powerful to risk anything in the war. Other people who will die usually don't want war.
He talks about that in his spoken word specials (many you can see on RUclips) where he'll go to a country people warn him against, roam around the city unguarded, stick out his hand and meet people. The interview was great because Sean came prepared.
@zunka ducks The Islamic Republic of Iran is not the citizenry of Tehran, which is who he was talking about. The actual people on the street are not their government, just like the people on the street here in the US are not our government. The man went to Tehran and spoke to actual people face to face, and he was commenting about that experience. I eagerly look forward to reading your account of your visit to Tehran and your face to face conversations with the people there. It sounds like your world travels and your conversations with Iranian citizenry gave you a different impression.

Music misses Henry. He has lived through more pain than just having his mouth feel hot. He knows he can be free of the heat in a couple minutes. We are of similar age and have lived through similar abuse. He helped me vent my rage and disappointment in the people that were supposed to love and protect me. I watched an interview the other day where Henry said that punk rock fans are the most elitist people he'd ever encountered, if you don't fit the image or sound how they expect you to sound then you aren't part of there group, I really heard that and have felt it with a majority of niche music fandoms, just form talking too and sharing my experiences, there seems to be a culture that gatekeeps there own circle to keep themselves pure and sanctified from the true experience of the outside world, i.e. anything that is not 'metal/punk', and I believe that Henry Rollins exhibits this in so many ways, that really speaks to me, punk rock is being educated about your environment and constantly saying 'no, I can do this!' Forever may he live, challenging culture and society at large to be better for the sake of humanity. God Bless you Henry!

Finished the wings, didn’t have so much as a sip of water. Henry Rollins is so hardcore the sauces barely tickle him. Also, extremely thoughtful, well-spoken and humble man. Suffers a tad too much of the impostor syndrome when he’s more talented than some people who have to say I’M VERY TALENTED, OK? He’s the real deal.

Henry Rollins is a bad motherfucker, no water no milk, he ate those wings without a hitch, while answering profound questions with even more profound answers. He's a great intelligent human with an awesome yet crazy past, and an insanely great attitude and disposition. Definitely a huge Henry Rollins fan!

Wow...... I'm very intrigued with this man. I remember enjoying his music some 20 years ago as a "pop" consumer and then nothing. I find myself amazed with how universal he is with his life choices. I'm debating if I should now listen to the book he recommended, listen to the stooges for the first time, or listen to one of his albums. As a 36yo trying to find an educated world view I am very impressed with his life motto.

There are icons and there are genuinely good people. I believe Henry is both.
Keeping in mind that Rollins once tore out the eye of a dead dear's head, after it was thrown on stage, and proceeded to eat the eye and spit it out over the crowd, I'm not surprised that he barely flinched when eating wings. What a man.
Henry is so fierce, but also very witty and geeky. You can see the little boy inside sometimes when he talks and certainly here too. It makes me angry when I read about how his step-father abused him.
The nicest and worst men are usually boys inside, difference is what sort of boy. Henry has always seemed to me that he hates injustice, that and passing the buck. He wants the world to be the P Funk block party it could be.
