- Happy Halloween! To celebrate the season, I’m getting into the spooky spirit by making illustrations out of some of my favorite dark musicals~!
I’ve been wanting to make a series about musicals for a really long time, and this was a ton of fun to put together, so I really hope y’all enjoy it!

Korean Dracula is played by Xia Junsu! He's a former member of TVXQ and of JYJ and he's an AMAZING soloist that released music recently, and he's also starred in many musicals such as Elisabeth, Excalibur, Death Note, Mozart and Dorian Gray. He broke the stigma around idols acting in theater and is partly credited by scholars for reviving interest into the Korean musical theater industry.

I’d recommend 35MM It’s a musical exhibition with one shot musical numbers. Every song has a different story entirely, and it has a lot of really great horror pieces. you’ve probably heard of the ballad of Sara Berry which has a rock and theatre vibe, And the story is basically reversed Carrie. Other horror songs from this album are Leave Luanne which sounds like this folk song, and an urban myth that was made up to scare bad husbands. Twisted teeth which is a more lighthearted song about vampires. My personal favorite is crazytown! it’s unclear story wise but the song slaps (and Alex Brightman sings it! He can do no wrong)

I can absolutely recommend another German musical about Vampires: "Tanz der Vampire"
I basically grew up with the soundtrack and loved it the entire time. I wouldn't necessarily call it a horror musical because it has more of a comedy vibe to me, but there are horror aspects (which just come with the topic) and some really tragic themes. There are quite many different recordings on youtube and the songs are an absolute banger.
Some of the tunes might seem familiar, one of the most well known songs "Totale Finsternis" ist based on "Total eclipse of the heart" and one of the writers of the musical reused some of the melodies for Meatloaf Songs.

You've now convinced me to start watching more obscure musicals. Hamilton was my introduction to musicals, and since then, I've completely fallen for the genre. Now things like SIX: the musical, Hadestown, Heathers and Mean girls are among some of my favorites. You know, I'd never heard of Starkid or their musicals, and I had no idea there was a Dracula musical. Yet again, you've made me day better!

I think I've heard of Newsies and the Book of Mormon before. Some other ones I've heard about and been interested in are Dear Evan Hansen and Jesus Christ Superstar. I also have to shamefully admit that I've never heard a single song from Les Miserables. They don't really show a lot of musicals at my city's non-movie theatre; mostly just music-less plays, and I don't know where to find stage recordings, so up until now I've just been experiencing the musicals I've seen through animatics and the Spotify original cast recordings, Heathers being the only exception since I found a really grainy version on RUclips once, with animatics laid over the singing parts.
Hey! I'm in the exact same boat as you, from my personal experience firebringer eased me into starkid more, you can do other musicals of course, I just recommend firebringer since we literally have the _exact_ same trip with musicals so far :D

its over was actually added after the english versions and was made specifically for the german version of the musical so theres no official english versions!
the Dracula you saw was kim junsu, and yes he is a kpop idol and used to be a part of tvxq (one of the biggest kpop groups of the 2000s) but he and a two other members left the group and sued their company and as a result were unofficially blacklisted from tv shows and were basically unable to promote their music anywhere. because of this they looked into trying other ways to keep making and performing music alongside their activities as the new group jyj, junsu went into musical theater with his debut musical 'Mozart!' in 2010 and has legitimately changed the game for kmusicals and has become one of the biggest musical actors in korea.
if you couldn't tell by my pfp I'm a huge fan, his portrayal of Dracula is amazing and there are lots of clips and bits on RUclips! no official recordings unfortunately but hopefully someday. I'm a big fan of his ripped open shirt look and became a fan because of 'its over' as well so it holds a big place in my heart and I'm so glad you liked it too! if you want to know true pain look up his version of 'loving you keeps me alive' he puts so much into his acting and singing its devastating in the best way

Ah yes, I just looked up the Korean production cast. The guy who plays Dracula is Kim Junsu (or stage name, Xia). He was one of the original 5 members of the TVXQ kpop boy group (now a duo). TVXQ was a VERY early group in terms of kpop fandom presence in western countries. They debuted in 2003. You really saw kpop take hold in the west with later groups like SHINee, Super Junior, and Girls' Generation tho ca. 2010. And now...lol, so many kpop fandoms! So yeah, western TVXQ fans, as they were during TVXQ's height, were literally kpop fans back when kpop was an extremely fringe fandom in the west.
My mom called Heathers, and I quote, "Highschool Musical on crack."

Yess! I'm not a musical person so I didn't know if the red hair was normal in productions of Dracula and when I saw the thumbnail I was really hoping it was the Korean version which it was! Yes it is a k-pop idol. His name is Xia Junsu and he used to be in the group TVXQ until about half the group broke off into their own group called JYJ under a different record label. TVXQ are a such a classic group in k-pop. Junsu himself does do solo work as well which definitely gets very dramatic and powerful. See his music video for his song Flower as an amazing example.
Me and my friends did a black friday readthrough recently! I was becky, take me back was awful, bc me and the guy playing tom were trying to harmonize while accommodating for zoom lag lol
"It's Over" was added after the show left Broadway and went to Germany I believe, that's why its not on the English cast recordings, or in any bootlegs of it from Broadway. Your art for these was fantastic btw. I've been trying to get a full bootleg of the Korean production for a long time and its been quite a problem digging it up lol.

That last drawing!!! :D I'm happy to know someone else loves Dracula: The Musical :D The actor who played Dracula in the Korean production is my favorite Kpop star ever! That's Xiah Junsu! Funny story: I actually discovered both Dracula:The Musical and Junsu through the video your describing ^^ It was from a 2014 production of Dracula, but Junsu has played Dracula I think a total of 3 times :) He just recently back in May finished his third run as Dracula ^^

The smile on my face was so big as soon as you drew Wiggly, I was just so happy and excited to hear you talk about Black Friday cause it's one of my favorite albums to have on loop while drawing
