I legit thought that was something only I’d noticed.

I will say the frozen broadway version is much better than the movie. Is more serious. And you get to know the characters more.
Monster is genuinly such a bop, my brain didn't believe spotify seeing it was a frozen musical song
Agreed. The Frozen Musical gave more character development and fixed a lot of the problems of the movie.
Strongly agreed. As I’ve said any time I get the opportunity, Frozen Broadway is the best version of the story beyond a doubt. The characters are slightly different (except Elsa, who is a lot different), but in the best way.
I agree! It’s one of my favourite musicals
@@pixelfairy6128 same when I heard it in my random Broadway playlist I had to make a double take because it was so dark for a modern Disney production. But I like it because the melody is so catchy and you can really relate to Elsa and her struggle to figure out how to help everyone and protect them from her.
heathers will forever be my favorite musical. There's just something about the casts voices and their performances makes my heart so happy
Same.

heathers is also my fav musical! i just love how dark it is lmao
@@BlueRenzienot me thinking it was going to be a normal school drama when I first went to watch it. Imagine my surprise

Speaking of Heathers, Candy Store and Meant To Be Yours, amazing villian songs, also love Freeze Your Brain, it's such an emotional song and the way it's preformed just chills, every time.
Ikr? And somehow all the characters managed to have so much depth, and you can’t help loving them.
Freeze Your Brain is just so absurdly good. I'd kill to perform that song on stage, damn I'd kill to perform as JD. Shame it'd have to be gender bent and low quality since no serious performance would let me play him.
@@demetriam2408Samee I would love to play him one day

Legally blonde the musical is better than the movie 🙌 all the character and relationships are way more developed. And the songs are so much fun!!!
fr, people don’t give it the respect it deserves.
and So Much Better is genuinely on par with Defying Gravity, fight me
Absolutely. She has more chemistry with fucking Vivian than Emmett in the film.
Also Heathers
It's great, the relationships are so much more developed. The only line I take umbrage with is "Look how far I have come without anyone holding my hand". Elle, babe, Emmett's been there THE WHOLE TIME.
Specially Emmet. His character is so much better in the movie.

So are we just gonna ignore the fact that Schaff has played not one but two pharaohs?
If I had a nickel for every time schaff played a pharoah, id have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
To me, Be More Chill is better than Dear Evan Hansen because the songs actually capture what it's like to be the weird outcast kid. Not a cute guy with an angelic voice singing about how he's shy or whatever; you actually hear and feel the experience of being awkward and outcasted through the opening number and especially "Michael in the Bathroom".
Basically Dear Evan Hansen seems like it was written for the pretty kids who saw themselves as weird. Be More Chill was written for the kids who actually WERE weird, autistic, and offputting; and thats why it resonates with us.
god i hate deh but bmc captured everything i felt (and honestly still do) and i deadass have never related more to a character than i did with jeremy heere. i used to cry to loser geek whatever a ton lol. most ppl dont like bmc cus its kind of camp and is "overrated" but for people like us who actually go through the same kind of experiences i have a special place in my heart for it.

@@notproductiveproductions3504didn’t they have a shark gang in the special where he loses his memory?
As a Percy Jackson fan the musical is pretty good adaptation wise. The characters all feel like the book characters and it really show cases the mental struggles they all have. Luke feeling betrayed by the gods, Percy feeling like he is never good enough and lonely because no matter what he does every one trys to push him away, Annabeth wanting to make her mom proud and be recognized for her own skills and talents, Grover's guilt for what happened to Thalia. The musical could have easily become really dark but they managed to save it with funny one liners and inside jokes to the books that lighten the mood and keep the elements that made the book so good.
Just did this show and I was Chiron!amazing show!
true
I like the Percy Jackson musical, but Annabeths singing voice was just too annoying to me. I always skip songs with her in them when relistening, but the rest are bangers.
@Elly van den Brink there’s just certain voices that will always be grating to me. I like her speaking voice, but her singing makes me irrationally angry. I’m sure she’s a great person, but I just can’t listen to her
@@Zanden08 Same!
Heathers and Beetlejuice are the very rare instances where I prefer them over the films honestly
They took already decent movies (imo) and improved on them into the style of theatre. Whilst still being as funny if not more funny than the original films. Amazing. If you wanna make a good musical adaptation of a film just make sure that that films stars Winona lol.

Little Shop of Horrors!! I love that one too!
I feel like people who don't like Les Mis are either tired of it or were part of a really bad production of it at one point. I am in both of these camps, but I still love it anyways, haha.
My grandpa hates it because he says it's long and boring and a stupid story based on a guy who stole bread and now has a policemen chasing him his entire life. I, however, love it.

Avenue Q is a masterpiece for me, but it's because I saw the braziliam version. The braziliam version is sooo good, the songs are sooo funny in portuguese. Simply perfect.
Great Comet has always been and likely always will be my favorite musical ever- so I get super nervous hearing other peoples opinions on it, but I’m glad you both like it! MWCA is great and Schaff should totally watch it and also make a part 2, there are still Newsies, Millie, Addams Family, and the other Starkid shows, plus probably many more.
At first it was Emirichu, now it's Schaffrillas
Coley is doing collabs with a lot of my favourite RUclipsrs rn and I'm living for it
THIS IS THE CROSSOVER I WOULD NEVER EXPECT BUT I 100% WELCOME
Would love to see where they'd place the Death Note musical, even though it never came here to America it was planned to, and due to that, we DID get a full, official English version of the soundtrack before the project was canned.
And all of the songs are bangers and just fit really well with the story and the characters. My personal favorites being "The Way It Ends" "Where's The Justice" "The Game Begins"...really all of the ones that hit the major story beats. Also I don't remember what it's called because it's been awhile since I listened to the soundtrack but the song that Light's dad sings is just heartbreaking in the BEST way cause he REALLY believes his son is innocent 💀
Edit: the soundtrack is super easy to find here on RUclips, if anyone was curious.
I found my way to that musical because an artist RUclipsr (ABD Illustrates) drew a piece based on it for a Halloween themed musical episode. And I agree, the music is really, really good. There's an Eng. sub version of the Japanese production on YT also--or there was at the time.

The fact Cats got knocked down for the mere existence of the 2019 film hurts lmao, I think any Cats fan can say that that thing should not be associated with the original musical in any form.
Movie aside it's definetly a hit or miss for many people. Either you love it, or are put off by it too much. It very much is something you have to suspend your belief for, and is a musical more about the experience than the story. I've adored the musical since childhood, so nostalgia is definetly a factor for me personally (alongside my mother and grandma).
We got to see the musical in 2019 for my birthday in a rare oppertunity where the new west end cast was touring around, and it's just pure, unbridled fun. It's not a musical you watch for the plot, but a musical you watch to be wowed by it's choreography and silly songs. It's not one to take too seriously. :)
100% agree! It's one of my all-time favourites but it's totally understandable that it doesn't work for so many people
cats is my favorite musical and seeing it on stage was one of the most magical experiences of my life 😭 it’s so good
@@knightloveslesbians I definetly agree! As someone who grew up watching it and always was fully convinced i'd never see it with my own eyes, I was so wowed by the experience and even cried like three times that day. Once when the music kicked in for the first time to signal the start of the show, once during break time and once when we were walking out. It was such an unforgettable experience, and i'll always take these memories with me.
I love Cats because of the fun songs, incredible dancing, and its sense of whimsy, but the characters are what make it so endearing to me. Because the plot is very simple (and for all the people who say there's no plot, there is a plot, Munkustrap literally explains it in "Invitation to the Jellicle Ball"), the focus is on the personalities of the characters and seeing their relationships with each other. The reason it gets better every time I watch it is because I notice more details in the performances of the actors that tell me more about their respective cats. I've come to love all of them but especially Munkustrap and Jemima, and I always get so excited whenever I see them.
One of the big things I got from this is that Shriffallis Productions was constantly typecast as Pharaoh characters.
The London production of Amelie is sooooo much better than the broadway version... most talented cast I've ever seen! They play their own musical instruments!!! No orchestra! Just insanely talented. The music also sounds super different but in the best way possible. 10/10.

I really liked it in middle school anf the concept is good I guess?? But the music numbers were super bland and after going back and listening to one of the songs last month it was DEFINITELY not as good from a musical standpoint as I remembered it to be
--BoJack Horseman and Mr. Peanutbutter-- Schaff and Coley in the same room! What's this, a crossover episode ?
Be More Chill is hands down my favorite musical. I discovered it early in high school and despite being written by adults it felt refreshingly realistic. I adore Michael’s character and most of the songs (minus “Do you want a ride” ) are some of my all-time favorites that I still listen to today. Next on my list would be Fiddler on the Roof and then Wicked.
I know I’m in a similar boat. I disagree with Shaf. At the end of the day it’s all about experience. He’s a dude in his mid 20s who reviews musicals (no shame), of course he’s gonna have a different taste in plays.
As someone who does like “Wicked”, “The Lion King”, “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Rent”, I understand it’s not for everyone. But I want to say thank you for putting “Hamilton”, “Les Mis”, “Sweeney Todd”, “Hadestown”, “Twisted” AND “Jesus Christ Superstar” on the S tier list because _all_ of them are my favorite musicals. And I’ll say this, “Jesus Christ Superstar” is Webber’s masterpiece and I think it’s better than Phantom.
(PS: You need to do a part two of this because you need to rank Rocky Horror Picture Show and Tanz Der Vampire! Or even “Notre Dame De Paris” (French rock opera of “Hunchback” which follows Victor Hugo’s novel closely).
and the Mozart musical. They also forgot The Wiz and Newsies.

Rest in peace Finding Neverland, always forgotten... Not necessarily a masterpiece, but a core memory from my childhood with some songs that make me cry every time I listen to them.
The Broadway production of Amelie sucks. They took out what makes the film work and made into some mid tier contemporary pop musical. HOWEVER, when they premiered the musical in the UK, they reworked it and actually made it good. The score, the orchestrations, the aesthetic, absolutely chef’s kiss.

If you ever do another ranking of musicals I have some suggestions:
𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐬: Really funny and also really sad. I cried for about 20 minutes after seeing it
𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧: Hilarious and the songs are really catchy. Plus, Christian borle in leather and eyeliner)
𝐀 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧'𝐬 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫: I only listened to some songs, but the plot seems really interesting and there's ONE guy who plays all the members of the family, so it has some crazy costume changes
𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫: It's by Tin Can Bros and a bunch of actors from Starkid are in it. Plus, it's about spies
𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬
𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥
EDIT: Also 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲, It's amazing and I can't believe I forgot about it
I'd be interested on their take on Love Never Dies as well.
If I might add
The Wiz: the Wizard of Oz with Jazz
Ragtime: all about the turn of the 20th century with some pretty good music if I do say so myself
Titanic: historical accurate and no stupid romance
Snoopy: a musical about the Peanuts comic
Guys and dolls no reason but other than to shame it.
Yes! Great recommendations!
falsettos is one of my favorite shows of all time!! the 2016 revival cast is absolutely killer imo
Black Friday didn't have a big impact until I relistened/rewatched and it has slowly become one of my top 3 Starkid musicals. Dylan Saunders carries the production on his back (and I'm definitely biased by how much I love If I Fail You). That said my favorite Starkid musical is Trail to Oregon! and I wish they didn't do Ani at the same time so more time/production value could have been put into it. I'm really interested to see what they would think of Spies are Forever too
Honestly same. Black Friday is probably not my favourite starkid but it’s honestly really good. I also think Lauren Lopez did some heavy lifting as well with Linda, she was just so delightfuly snarky and an evil Karen. I’m surprised that the songs weren’t remembered? I mean feast or famine? That song is just so cool and sinister! But that said it’s a slow burn musical you have to rewatch to see the true appeal of. And honestly that comes for a lot of starkid musicals.
I totally agree. There’s not a Starkid musical I don’t like, but Black Friday takes a few watches to really appreciate. And I really love that after TGWDLM that they expanded the Hatchetfield universe and I’ve been obsessed with Nightmare Time, the music in that has been amazing even though they didn’t take it to the stage. I can’t decide if I like when they have a higher production value… I loved when they had to get creative and you felt like you were watching your friends be silly on stage
If you two paired up and wrote Shark Tale the musical, my life would be complete.
2 musicals that i really love are the Count of the Monte Cristo musical and the Jekyll and Hyde musical. I know those eyes/That man is dead, Everyday a little death, Its a Dangerous Game and Confrontation are such amazing songs that needs to be talked about more!
Jekyll and Hyde has no business being as good as it is. It is CRIMINALLY underrated
the man i used to be is also really neat and even emotional
y’all absolutely need to watch Newsies!! also literally any William Finn musical, but especially Falsettos, cause it is an actual masterpiece
Im 30/10 years late to the craze with newsies but my hyperfixated ass was waiting the whole video to see if it was gonna be on this
My old performing arts school teacher, Harriet Caplan-Dean, was actually a swing for the 2022 UK tour of Six, playing all six of them at one point or another. She's hugely talented and also super cool.
You guys should really consider watching Something Rotten! Its incredibly funny and very meta and satirical towards the musical genre. It follows two brothers trying to upstage Shakespeare himself and it is HILARIOUS. The music SLAPS, the acting and comedic timing is spot on, and from what I’ve seen the set itself is great!
A Something Rotten fan?! Finally! I thought I'd never see one
Omg I love something rotten so much 😭😭😭
I personally think Matilda is fabulous. Extraordinarily catchy and witty songs with awesome production value. Also it’s hilarious.
Mean girls is a musical that works best if you see a production.
I can't believe she put it in D I'm-
How did she forget Apex Predator???
@@fruitbythefoote EXACTLY!
@@lolabee1825 I agreed with the rankings for the most part but I couldn’t believe Mean Girls was put worse than Mamma Mia of all musicals while Oliver got an F. I would argue that Mamma Mia has the same issues Shaf stated about Oliver: it’s about the people around Sophie more so than Sophie herself.
I saw Mean Girls in its beta testing version (a couple of the songs were different) at the National Theatre, and it was sooo much fun!
First it was Cindy, then it was Emirichu, and now Schaffrillas??!?! I think my worlds are colliding 🤯🤯🤯
The only musical my school ever did was Joseph and the Technicolored Dreamcoat and _holy shit_ was that a fever dream. Hearing those songs still give me war flashbacks
We need a sequel episode where they rank the musicals they missed hopefully they see the shows they didn't include
*cough* ride the cyclone *cough cough*
Evita for one.
WHERE is rocky horror
Out of all the musicals I've seen or performed, my favorite, hands-down, is Newsies. The original movie is mediocre, but the Broadway version has some of the most fun songs and amazing choreo I've seen, I would die to be in a performance of it I also performed in a local theatre version of SpongeBob the Musical and can say that it is a very fun and underrated musical.
Edit: I got to do Newsies at my local theatre!
So glad to see someone mention Newsies! One of my favourite musicals of all time. Also, have you seen the news about it coming to West End? I’m so pumped!
The songs are amazing
This!!! I spent the whole video waiting for this one to come up haha, even though I do dearly love the others Newsies will always be my fav ❤️
heathers is s tier for heather chandler ALONE, periodt
Indeed! Also quick question, do you like the west end version of Heathers or the Broadway version. Personally I like the West End one cause the songs are bangers but the talking/acting bits in the recording just sound off while the Broadway version’s talking bits sound natural
@@oop5488 i actually don’t know which one i watched, haha. I watched it on yt, its posted on here in very good quality! I believe that it was the broadway version, but i don’t know for sure.
@@randaku2649 definitely recommend listening to the original west end cast recording! Imo the new songs in the west end version make the musical even better
The fact that you decided to put "Moulin Rouge!" in the S tier along with "Hamilton" and "Les Misérables" makes me very, VERY happy! :D
Same! I love both the movie and the broadway version of moulin rouge (I personally think Aaron tveit’s voice in the broadway version is phenomenal, especially during Roxanne)
@@EatTheRich848 The film will always be my favourite, but I agree, the Broadway version is absolutely incredible too! And El Tango De Roxanne just has to be my favourite song of all time, quite honestly. It's just... powerful, dramatic, enchanting.
@@iphiko9638 I totally agree! To me the movie will always be superior too 😂 but yes El tango de Roxanne is easily favorite part in both versions and one of my fav songs from musicals in general-its suspenseful, dramatic, emotional, breathing taking, and an all around incredible scene. I love to meet a fellow moulin rouge lover lol ❤️
I think it's a fantastic show in terms of choreography, production and spectacle. But some of the new song choices they chucked in were a little iffy and, frankly, sort of distracting ("Firework"? Ugh). Just pushed it a little too much into reality talent show territory.
My favourite musical is Falsettos and I wish people talked about it more. Not just because it's amazing, but also because the story is very important.
Actually, Cats is one of my all time faves 😂 I’ve seen it live when I was younger and instantly fell in love with it. The fever dream vibe is something I very much enjoy…
Legally Blonde did not age well in some parts, but it holds up better than I thought it would.
Ok but (gl)Amber Gray just leaving Hadestown some days ago needs to be at least mentioned in here, wish her the best 💖
Heartbroken that falsettos isn't on this tier list
same, it’s absolutely amazing!! i literally skipped to the end just to see if it was here, they absolutely need to watch it
Same! I was eagerly waiting to see if that and Pippin were on there because they're some of my favorite musicals! (Also a bit disappointed that Putnam County Spelling Bee and Chess weren't included, but I know those are more obscure, so I wasn't expecting them.)
@@wearawatch7352 also a new brain!!
@@artemisb9441 Yes that too! (Also, it's so funny because I was almost sure I knew A New Brain, but I wanted to double check I was thinking of the right musical, so I looked it up, and I had literally no idea until now that Putnam, Falsettos, and A New Brain were all written by the same person! I had just mentioned Putnam as another musical I was hoping to see on the ranking by coincidence lol)
@@artemisb9441 anything by William Finn is a guaranteed masterpiece tbh
Honestly, Be More Chill is made for a very specific audience. As part of that audience, I love the show to death, but outside of that audience it's definitely not gonna be a smash hit. Love the show to death but respect your opinion.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I LITERALLY forgot A Guy Like You existed. Yeah. That shows how NOT plot important it is.
Edit 2: Fiddler is the first show I saw live, actually! I saw it at a theatre about an hour away, it’s a community theatre, and it’s really good! I actually put in an audition, I might be performing The Music Man!
I love spring awakening so much but barely anyone I know has heard of it
It’s so amazing and underrated
This is such an odd and unexpected collab, but my gosh, am I enjoying it
"The new songs are okay"
Me, sobbing to "In a Crowd of Thousands": :,)
an absolute S tier song to me
screams in "still"
I sang the songs so much that my husband recognized all of them when we went to see it on tour. So good.
Stay I pray you is such a emotional and impactful song
Schaff rating Hamilton in S tier is surprising considering his spite towards Lin-Manuel Miranda
Nah Schaff generally seems to enjoy Lin's work just not Lin himself
Wait why does he not like Lin? I've never watched him before
@@Alex-ed9wm The whole promesa stuff, basically politics. Also he doesn't like how Lin casts himself as the main character in his musicals.
@@ZombieManF yepp, he loved Tick Tick Boom and Encanto too, both projects that Lin was a heavy part of
ooo a Venti pfp
This is a great video, the two of you played off each other so well! I hope there'll be a part 2, there's a lot more musicals I would love to hear your thoughts about (like Evita, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark).
There WAS a Phineas and Ferb stage performance at one point. It was done like one of those “party” plays where all the characters are throwing a musical and it has songs from the show. I forget the year but I do remember it existing.
Six is such a special musical to me (purely because it got me to musicals.) The footage showing the og west end cast gives me memories alone man
Same
I love six I can't help it
Fun fact: My high school did Hunchback of Notre Dame, and I was part of the cast! (Specifically the choir). It was fun as hell, and I still sometimes listen to the music.
This is legit my two favourite content creators collabing and I genuinely never would've expected this. You guys are both so amazing, I can't wait to see what you both get up in the future xxx
Great Comet is one of my favorite musicals of all time! So glad to have seen it mentioned here!
Yo there's a few good ones missing unfortunately. Falsettos, Groundhog Day, A New Brain, Come From Away and Spring Awakening are all banger musicals honestly
My fav musical that needs more recognition is the Jekyll and Hyde. The song are so great and dramatic~
I LOVE J&H!! Such an amazing musical✨
Jekyll & Hyde and Hadestown are my favorites. I actually performed Confrontation a while back. The characters are compelling and the music is amazing. It really does need more recognition.
me and my friends always quote “did you know that in the odyssey if you were to sleep in a lotus bed one night would last a hundred years” even though only like one of us has actually listened to the percy jackson musical
Me: realizes ride the cyclone isn't an option
Me: *sobs*
I know I may may be a major minority here but I'm actually obsessed with Anastasia and seeing the Broadway actually ruined the movie (which was my favorite growing up) for me because I love it so much. Gleb's character is probably what really makes it for me, the symmetry of his past with Anya's and his disposition with Dimitri's, I just adore it. As well as the historical references with the diamond, Alexei and Yekaterinburg! And on top of all that honestly my favorite songs are the new ones! "Stay, I pray you" made me cryyy and if you pay attention the melody from "In the Dark of the Night" is weaved in there! And while you're definitely right The stage version isn't nearly as fantastical I do love the costumes, especially the Tsar and his wife, being dressed in all white is likely a reference to "white Russians" (and just the fact they wore white/pastels more often than not lol) and gives them a more ghostly feel when they appear on stage. Sorry to ramble I'm just obsessed lmao. Anyways v funny video and I'm sorry for commenting a year later lol.
does your ship have an "guy that i'd kinda be into" animatic or are they a rarepair
IM SO SAD FALSETTOS WASNT ON THIS LIST!!! ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MUSICALS AND I WAS REALLY EXCITED TO HEAR YALL MAYBE TALK ABOUT IT BUT ALAS 😭😭😭
I was literally scrolling though the video looking for falsettos and was so sad to see it not included
IKR, I sat through 50 minutes of video scanning for falsettos and also getting my heart broken with their disdain for two of my favorite musicals
Also, I hated being in Oklahoma since I was Gertie and I didn't get to sing a solo, but my inner teen got all defensive when they called it okay (this is in no way disregarding the opinions of or the actual creators, I love both of them and most if not all of what they said could be justified)
FR I wanted falstettos and newsies 😭
same!!! i was so sad when they got to the end of the list without it lol
