    Excellent review Brian. The shots of you riding over a curb was an excellent way to demonstrate the suspension. This model, it seems to me, is more of an exercise machine than one ridden for fun or grocery getting. Lectric also has a sale on and includes a few premium accessories for $949 as of this date.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  3 года назад +5

      Thanks. I wouldn't consider it an exercise machine. Like any ebike you can pedal as little or as much as you want. If you ignore the regen feature, it's a powerful eBike on pedal assist or throttle.

      Exercise machine? How did you get that idea?
      I took my engwe on a mountain bike course and had a great time. I've taken it on plenty of hiking trails and it was excellent. I've ridden it on sandy beaches, through creeks, and over river rocks. The combination of fat tires and full suspension is terrific.
      It handles getting groceries with aplomb. At many campgrounds, I find off road shortcuts to and from the store that are fun. The Lectric bikes do not have full suspension and I would not want a hard tail for grocery getting, or off roading.
      The one thing I like about the Lectric bikes is that I think they use 3" fat tires instead of the 4". I would be happier with lighter tires and a thinner bike.

      @@johntaves487 The minute the battery or electronics cut out on a ride, you have to pedal home on the equivalent of a exercise bike since this thing's motor has drag you have to overcome, something a non-regen bike wouldn't penalize you with. Add the extra weight and dual suspension making pedaling forces less efficient into forward momentum, it would be an unhappy time getting home on leg power alone.

    Awesome review. I believe there is a type of regen motor that has a sort of a "clutch" of sorts so the resistance doesn't have to be engaged and overcome for pedaling. That motor is a bit more pricey but it seems that IF this bike had that feature the rear wheel could spin freely whenever you didn't need regen.

    Oh man thanks for this video. I was always tempted to get the Engwe Pro after I bought the Engwe EP-2 but I wasn't too sure. Firstly as you point out, not many bike manufacturers have regenerative braking. I began to wonder why. Next I compared regenerative braking in a car compared to a bicycle. I realized that on a pedal bike you hardly ever brake (or at least you don't brake as often as in a car or motorbike). Imagine this: You get into your car and pull out of your driveway. You BRAKE. You pull out and come to the first junction. You BRAKE. You might decide to go on ahead and come to another junction. You BRAKE. You're travelling down the road and a car suddenly pulls out in front of you. You BRAKE. You might come to a roundabout. You BRAKE. You turn off at the gas station. You BRAKE. You're braking all the time. On a pedal bike there's very little interference when riding. I decided against getting this bike, but appreciate you making this video.

    Great review. My buddy might get this or the Hummer eBike that's similar. I think a lot of those rectangular bikes with battery that slides inside are made by the same folks who send to others to modify and put their label on it. Could be wrong, but I ended up with a Rad-Mini last Nov. just as they were getting rid of them.
    The Rad is highly customizable with other parts that fit with no splicing needed. I got it to keep busy last winter as I healed post surgery. Ended up upgrading everything but the motor and frame. That was the plan and I couldn't be happier with the insane acceleration, but if I could do it over, I might consider something like yours.

    I have this great bike. The one thing I do different is to set the pedal assist to 0-3. I have found going with 5-9 are too many as your speed is limited to 0-25 and how many times do you want to add 1/2 miles per hour. I also, for battery usage have set the pedal assist to 1=40%, 2=47% and 3=75% this gives me a top speed of 18 MPH in 3 and saves the battery a lot. 3=100% uses the battery quickly.

    In my mind simple explanation of "regen".... Mechanical energy is being converted back to a "charge" (electrical energy) via gravity (steep hill/decent) in this case. On the flip side when "assisting" forward momentum, electric energy is being converted to mechanical energy.

    Regen is super important. Only commercial bike that has it. Urban riding is way faster and safe if you can rocket between stops/lights and get free braking in between. Downhill safety. Less brake wear means longer safety time between pad changes. Regen makes cargo carrying at speed safer. Bike would need a stronger/torquyer motor to maximize benefit, and overall usefulness of bike though.

    Very nice review, but I'm not certain that the regenerative feature is worth it. On a cruise last month I rented an ebike (Radpower) as a test of the ebike experience. I was very impressed. I did about 4 miles in deep sand and a couple miles on the open beach. As a motorcyclist, I found myself pressing the group leader to go faster in the deep sand as that's what I'm used to on the motorcycle. Feeling the pedal assist kick in after pedaling was a cool feeling.

    This is an unfortunate first experience with regen modes on an ebike. On a better setup (look into any of the Grin ecosystem), you pull the brake lever and the throttle then serves as a variable regen lever. That way you can get a small amount, or a lot, or regen -- up to, and including, almost fully stopping.
    I usually recommend DD motors (or geared with a locked clutch as this like appears) so that you can have regen -- not because it'll get you extra range (it's, at best, maybe 5-10%), but it will absolutely save you money on brake pads over the course of a few years. It also gives you another form of vehicle stoppage, which is a nice perk.

    In terms of an electric car, the real significance of regen is not the recharging factor but the fact that it provides a parallel braking system. So with EVs it means that owners are not changing out brake pads nearly so much. So is this advantage transferred to the ENGWE Engine Pro? I ask this because I have an electric bike in a hilly area and find it very hard on brake pads.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  2 года назад

      Good point. That is certainly true. You just have to dial the pedal assist back to enable the braking.

      You have to hit the - button several times to toggle it to 0, then it will regen and only if you are going fast enough. If you have long hills this can be useful to limit your top speed. For short hills it will be over before you get the thing turned on, then you have to undo that to go up the hill.
      In general, I find the regen useless.

    Great review! Very tempted - seems like the perfect ebike for me, *if* the regen doesn't really drag it down.
    Would you consider doing some comparison tests of the regen?
    1) Ride a set course with regen on & off, and see what the difference in range is to a given battery level (or battery level at a given distance) - might do both a hill course and a flat course
    2) On a flat surface, from a given speed, how far does it coast? 1) with regen on, 2) with regen off, and 3) on a different ebike
    Thanks!

    • @johntaves487
      @johntaves487 2 года назад

      The regen is useless.
      1) you won't gain squat with the regen. If you are on a mountain bike course, and the regen was triggered by the brake handle, and you used the brakes, then you would see a difference. But this is not triggered by a simple brake/go lever. It is triggered by some fiddly button on the handle bar, so you'll never get to it in time. The bike will have slowed from friction before you get to that stupid fiddly button. Then you have to fiddle with that stupid button to get power to go back up the hill. It is totally useless on quick short hills.
      2) Forget regen on a flat surface. And it does not make any sense to talk about coasting and regen. Regen is a brake. The more it is generating, the more it is braking. Plus, it does not generate at low speeds, which means that you only get the regen for the top half of your braking needs. The most efficient way to come to a stop is without regen and without brakes.
      3) The only way you will see decent regen is if you have a long hill where it is so steep that coasting will make you go too fast. And that hill has to have the correct steepness because if it is too shallow, you'll slow too quickly since the regen is not adjustable. If it is too steep, then it won't be a very long hill anyway.
      In short the regen is totally useless

    I owned a bike that was identical to this, except it was imported with a different brand name. It was "Fat bear" by Ratan. I found the regen to be pointless. They need to make it happen on the backwards movement of the throttle, or a separate brake handle. This would allow you to use it as a brake properly. Having to flip the setting to zero cannot happen at a moment's notice.
    The charge level indicator was total crap too. I went on a journey of about 7.5 miles to Home Depot. I had off road sand, then a head wind going downhill, then roller coaster pavement. The whole time I was going to to HD, the meter read 100%. At HD it read 76%. On the return, I was going uphill, but had some tail wind and most of the way it ready around 76%. I didn't do the sand, but took a longer route on dirt road. A mile or two from the RV, the meter read 45%. Previously it had pooped out reading 44%, so I knew I could be in trouble at any moment. Pedaling that thing without juice is a nightmare. I made it and then estimated the power I used and it came very close to the rated ah capacity of the battery. The problem is that they do not accumulate the amps to properly measure the capacity. They are just measuring the voltage, so you end up with effectively a 3 position level: with full (100%), not full (75%) and you might be dead at any moment (45%).
    The final thing that was very annoying was that it would deliver 750watts when I did not pedal, but if I pedal, it would drop to 330! It is really annoying that it won't deliver the full power when I pedal. On a mountain bike trail, it can make the difference between walking up and not.
    Mine was stolen, but even with those huge irritations at their stupid software, I bought the Engui.

      I'm familiar with that bike too. You're right. I wish these bikes would measure current to indicate the battery SOC, but it's based on voltage. Whitehurst has several videos on various aspects of these settings. Some others have talked about this too. As for the cost…you need a mindset that allows you to invest in yourself. I have three eBikes from 2016/16 that cost far more than this model so remember you can spend as much as you believe your health/the planet is worth to you. Remember to treat non eBikers with respect…they already scoff at those who ride with a motor and eBikers need no further disdain than we already have. See you on the road and trails.

      EBikes never used to cost this little, especially for a turn-key, middle level quality rig. The returns are immense, the investment less than it has ever been.

I also like to be able to keep up more with traffic .. So my choice was the Ariel Rider Kepler. Goes 35 mph throttle or PAS. 20 ah 52V. Just is a big bike. I think the only thing in a folding E Bike right now that I would consider is the Wallke H6 with dual batteries. 👍

    So what happened to the Leletric ebike? We got the Lelectric and I enjoy riding it. It does very well going up hills. The only drawback is the uncomfortable stock seat. We did order the upgraded the seats and comfort package but they have a backlog on their accessories which is delaying us to go on longer trips. For the price and getting back on a bike after 20 or so years and having the pedal assist is great. This one you’re reviewing seems great and seems a bit more for adventurous riders. 😂 Thanks for the review. Hopefully we’ll see an update on your Winnebago Journey soon?

His "electrisity" ran down 12 miles away, in the middle of nowhere, and he was forced to push his now-impotent bike the rest of the way home. I have nothing against ebikes, although I would never buy one (pedal bikes are much better for your health), but if you're thinking of buying one, make sure it also has a traditional pedal transmission, or you may find yourself walking a very long distance just to get back.

When watching you ride it looked like you were doing alot of steering correction and was worried you would catch the edge of the pavement. Was it stabile and easy to balance/steer? From the video it didn't look like it was.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  3 года назад +5

      It's very stable and easy to control. I tend to ride right on the edge of the road. In that shot going up the steep hill, I was really pedaling hard and moving my body which causes me to move around more. Of course a 25" handle bar would give you a little more control especially on trails and I may upgrade to one. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Hello, I don't know if you speak French, but I will allow myself to express myself in my native language. Know that I bought a PX6 bike almost 2 years ago, it arrived after a year exactly 11 months ago, apart from the fact that the first week of use the front brake disc screws loosened causing me to fall, which I then lost a pedal then the kickstand, it only worked well for 3 months in all and for all! For the past 8 months, I've been spending my time communicating through a translator with the after-sales service, waiting for spare parts that don't work and worse that aren't original, like the speedometer that doesn't work. 'I was sent back (see photo). In conclusion, after months of waiting to receive spare parts that did not work, I asked to operate the warranty of the bike and I was told that the bike is no longer guaranteed, whereas if we take the date of reception less than a year ago, without taking into account the months of waiting with a broken down bike, I am told today that the motor is out of order and I would have to pay again for a motor and mount it myself with an old speedometer (one is broken and on the other the cruise control does not work) Anyway to conclude I was blocked on the chat with a smiley, making fun of me what ..... It's a SHAME !!!!!! This is simply dishonest! I'm sick of such practice, I'm going to make RUclips videos and I'm going to burn it on Tic Toc this broken down bike that is useless! This is the modest opinion of a customer unhappy to have been had! Message for those interested: FLEE!!!!!

  • @TomSpurlock

    It sounds like the bike won't freely coast like a normal ebike when you stop pedaling on flat ground, you always need power assist. It also sounds like with power set to 0 that pedaling the bike with no assist is really difficult, having excess undesired drag. Given the minimal charge obtained for the fraction of time going downhills, that's why other ebike manufacturers don't include it, as the experience is poor for most people familiar with normal ebikes. Sound like a gimmick.
    We recently wanted to ride our ebikes on Mackinac Island where ebikes are forbidden. However riding an ebike with the battery removed is acceptable, which worked for us. They were fine on flat ground. That Engwe ebike would not work well in that case, based on your experience with the bike.

    A glaring issue I have with the bike is that the front steering assembly seems loose. I have tried to hold it together and tighten as much as I can by myself but it always seems to get looser as I ride. (around 150 miles on the bike so far.) The front assembly came with a white cap on the top of it, I unscrewed it and put in the handlebars, throwing away the white cap and screw. Was I supposed to reuse that screw?? Also what PSI do you keep the tires at? Any help will be much appreciated!

    • @johntaves487
      @johntaves487 2 года назад

      Yes, I think that screw is the problem. Fold the handlebars and if there is no screw with on a large washer going down the shaft, then that's your problem. Get an M6*30 bolt and a big washer. That will hold the handlebars down onto the shaft. Without it, you are using only the grip of the C clamp around the shaft. I can send a photo if you need it.
