Legally speaking I think RTX REMIX is in trouble, Personally speaking I think it is awesome. What do I mean by Legally speaking, well it's messing with files in a way that is borderline considered cheat engines and these creators of these kinds of software has in the past been sued. Finally i would like to just recite proper terminology, not because you failed at it, no you did well, just because it's always good to just remind people what the differences between a Remaster, a Reboot, and a Remake are. A Remaster, is using the ORIGINAL files and Engine to rebuilt for newer platforms to be built and optimised for modern times, no new assets are actually used, however a remaster can refer to just the code, and then a graphical patch can be included in the remasters first patch, which can be on the same release obscuring this a bit. A Reboot, is a new game made from scratch that captures the core essens of the original or its predecessor reboot, to start the same story over, but is as such a new start as if the previous didn't exist. A Remake, is a One to One copy of the old game, made from either scratch or so revamped that virtually none of the original game nor game engine exist. The game is fundamentally the exact same, an example is Warcraft III: Reforged, which is actually an entirely new engine and ecosystem and most assets are reused from the original, however, it also gomes with a full set of new assets that are upgraded versions of the old. A Remake blended with a Remaster is the most expensive and prone to fail option. Now RTX Remix is essentially a Remastering tool, It doesn't change or add any assets in the files, it simply transforms the data it has. Its an engine, and by definition its a game engine too, as it can transform data. And by semantics its a Cheat Engine as it modifies data in real time, without consent from the IP. So be careful which games you use it on, as its most likely a violation of most ToS and EULAs, and proably can get you banned with justification. That said this is really awesome and I always love your Content LevelCap, been following you since your BF3 days some 13-15 years ago, and i loved to see BF1942 like this, thanks for sharing!

Graphics aside, BF1942 is still the best, next to BF1. The soundtracks, the maps, the atmosphere .. nothing else makes you feel as close to war as this classic.
The one problem I keep seeing with RTX remix showcases is that the original art style or general aesthetic gets obliterated by the wash of harsh dynamic lighting and raytracing - all semblance of color consistency or baked 'scene lighting' is gone. The tech itself is impressive but seems like it's more designed for a game built to use it in the first place.
it doesn't have to be, you can do anything you want. If you want it to look identical you can do so, I personally generally use it for asset replacement only.
@@mr.funkyright Indeed. How well an RTX remaster sticks to the art direction depends on how modders utilise the tool. Doom 2 RTX is a good example of that. Although they strayed from the original in some ways (most notably, enemies are rendered as 3D voxels rather than as 2D billboards) it did retain the original feel. Right now, a lot of modders get pretty flashy with RTX Remix and overdo it to a tacky extent, but that'll go away once the novelty of path tracing wears off as well as when they master the tool itself. It's like how devs 20 years ago would make a lot of items spin in place just because they wanted to show off how far we've come with 3D rendering, or how it became a trend for games like Oblivion and Fable to blinden you with bloom effects since that was so new.
the HL2 RTX remix team has from what ive seen keeped with the original artstyle and atmosphere of the game just using the tech of RTX remix to add modern features like PBR and such to things like the nova prospekt trailer that came out recently also shows you can have lighting be nearly/exactly the same as the original just with path tracing and such.
Love the remix content, would love for you to do a deep dive on a few different levels of nostalgia. Like a video deep dive on republic commando, gears of war, splinter cell, bf3, and so much more.
BF1942 doesn't just have a LOD system, i think it's called billboard textures where a model changes to 2D texture at a certain distance. This is only used for certain vegetation in this game though
I'd note that I personally use Reshade, one of several post processing applications. It looks rather good and that method will go online.. One step farther is to play on the HD Remaster which swaps out Textures with a greater LOD ( level of detail ) .. This can be use in conjunction with Reshade.. however the game will stutter online with a medium high player count. There would be a huge interest in the community for mod of RTX that would go Multiplayer. Servers w/o content check only presumptively.

There’s a couple mods for 1942 where the modders just replaced the LOD with the base model but something to do a different distances still but it’s all the same model so they’re still more detail at different distances. I think Battlefield 1918 is a good example of this along with, creating whole new environment, maps and types for the game. You’re better off recreating whole new textures and standard meshes for each piece of the game. That’s a lot of files.
you can also use ReShade to make any game look even better without impacting performance too much, if you have a low end pc like me. i just put graphics on low or medium and use ReShade to add those effects which are normally too performance heavy to run. you can also add things like bloom and DOF to older games which dont have those effects

Need to maybe replace the indoor table models with models that have lamps on them along with RT light sources. Still, impressive use of an impressive tool. I do love watching these Remix videos of yours.
