Hi Brian! That was a great camera view right at track level at 11:05. It would be cool to get a video of a train using it. Thanks for another great video!
This past Sunday I saw the Texas Eagle Amtrak train setting in a siding at Granger, Texas. This line was the former Katy and now UP line. Such is the life of Amtrak passenger trains.
Hey there Jaw Tooth . I was talking to a friend of mine who says that the car that got hit by the Zephyer happened N of Canton , MO. not S , between Canton and Gregory Landing . I'm not really sure . It's been something like 45 years ago I was mowing that guys grass . Once , while I was taking a lunch break a bit west of Ottumwa IA. , at Chief Wappello's grave , I watched in horror as a car full of teens went around the gates and tried to beat Amtrack . They lost horribly . The track speed is 79 there. The car literally exploded . What I thought was a body flying through the air turned out to be the motor when I got there . I was kind of relieved . What was left of the car , was mostly the back 1/2 . I don't understand how this came to be . The line is straight as an arrow with nothing obstructing the view . Inexperience, stupidity , drunkenness, I just never knew . It is hard to unsee , even half a lifetime ago . What was left of that car also flew through the air a good 150' , the motor nearly 250' . Never stopped there again . Those poor parents .
Wow, that would be horrible to see! The driver might not have realized how fast the train was actually going. Inexperienced drivers wouldn't think the train was going that fast until it was right up on them. They probably had the radio turned up and were talking. You never forget that stuff after you see it.
They probably never felt a thing. I mean the car EXPLODED! I went to what I thought was a body only to find the engine and transaxle. Shit flew everywhere. By the time I spotted the passenger compartment , or what was left of it I could here the sirens turning off hwy 34 and onto the gravel road I was on. This was back in the 80's when I was young and stupid. I had just got done delivering a load of pipe and fittings to a tank manufacturer in Ottumwa, grabbed some fast food a six pack and headed for Wapellow's grave, burned one and cracked open a Bud. When the sirens got close, I GOT GONE . I did hear on the news that night that 4 had died , I really think , on impact. I mean that car just EXPLODED! I used to go to that spot frequently when my deliveries were done , it was quiet and there was some nice shade with a good view up and down the old CB&Q double track , with CTC in each direction , that allowed me to know if there was anything out there for 15 miles in either direction. I haven't ever been back , and yes The Meskwaki Chief Wappello is buried there . It is just a tiny little park in the middle of nowhere . Those kids were probably headed there and got bent when they spotted me out and decided to go somewhere else. Being just out of school and having only so much time before needing to be home , they were probably in a hurry to get somewhere to do the same thing I was doing , to bad they didn't know. To bad I screwed up their plans , and to bad they were in to much of a hurry. Think about how the train crew felt ! This was a gravel road but it was a busy road and it did have gates and they worked just fine . One kids judgement just didn't!
@@JawTooth After thinking about it a bit , now it is stuck in my head again , I think maybe they were just playing a deadly game of chicken. It was a gravel road and mostly traveled by locals who should be quite aware of how fast the trains go . I think track speed for freight is 60 mph. There was I big hullabaloo to the E of that spot around the same time at Mt Pleasant IA. where Jr. High school kids were rolling under moving trains . This was in the papers and TV at that time. I suppose one has to write it off as the ill-percieved indestructibility of youth . Unfortunately they only find out the fallacy of the train of thought a split second before it becomes a mute point. I love coal trains. Born and raised in Kentucky. They're beautiful JT how do you know when the coal car is full? When it spills over the side. How to combat that? Taller sides and stiffer springs.
I'm surprised to see the coal shipped in all those hopper cars. I thought most coal unit trains these days use bathtub gondolas. Though where I live in MD it's rare to be near one of the two closeby RR lines just when a coal train is heading to one of the power plants, to see in person what type of cars are being used.
If it is a coal train in Florida, it is heading for a power station for electrical power. Is that location in Plant City? Bit looks like their observation deck.
Amazing Video. I film trains every Saturday and if your lucky you will catch a Union Pacific Train Passing Or Connecting Carts. In Los Angeles Its Rare Catching Freight Trains 😂
100 cars on first train, 82 cars on second train, and 8 on the amtrak here in Texas we now produce more power via wind generation than by coal. a lot of the coal plants have shut down and a lot of the old natural gas plants have also been demolished.
It’s nearly a year since we were on Amtrak and I sure miss those horns. Great vid as usual, Jaw Tooth. I must say the staff are looking younger, or am I getting THAT old?
@@JawTooth That power plant was not listed in the list I found, but the TECO Big Bend Power Plant is indeed a major coal fired plant. However, a lot of coal is shipped from Tampa for export.
I have a feeling that this diamond interlocker is a tad worn out generally they are kind of loud but this one is real loud, they do wear out over time and have to be replaced
The coal may be going to a port for shipment overseas. Coal which is likely too toxic for use in the U.S. - too much heavy metals and sulfur probably can be burned in other countries.
Sad case that is. Darn EPA CARB And other regulatory fearmongers. That's why Champion paper is gonna be a gymnasium for spoils brats instead of a paper mill. Sad.
I ride my bike with the kids. I rode with them on Monday and Tuesday. I'll make a video of me on it with them. I have one on here somewhere. I teach them soft ball, soccer, bike riding, just about everything. The girls are pretty tough little kids. As soon as they get off the bus they want to ride bikes or practice hitting the soft ball. Live Action!
We will still have coal trains in 20 years. It is true that power plants are constantly being closed or converted to natural gas but we still have a large demand for coal in this country and we ship coal to other countries. It has taken a huge hit , especially in Kentucky and West Virginia but there are still a lot of big mines and the Powder River Basin. Some of the new candidates for president were running on the basis of getting rid of coal powered power plants. I have relatives from Kentucky and that was not a popular idea there to say the least.
Maybe the left's big brains can design rail cars to haul sunlight and wind for those areas that don't have that much.😏 I have relatives in WVA that were registered democrats until Big 0 killed off 6 million coal miners jobs.
Hey there JT . I talked to some BNSF and KJRY crews today . BNSF boys and girls ain't talking , found out why when I talked to KJRY. The wreck happened in an area that is kind of difficult to get to , especially when clean up is happening. I only got to see the aftermath . Apparently a BNSF crew shoved a line of cars to far and out of the yard onto the main. A southbound , loaded coal train spotted the fowled main as they entered the N end of the yard . At that point their whole train is on a shallow downhill grade , traveling 25 mph. It is about 1 mi. to impact . They put it into emergency and almost got stopped but not quite . Somebody's mammary is really in the ringer . It happened right in the middle of the S flood wall gates which luckily were not damaged. Could have been a lot worse . I'm told it was one of those real slow motion surrealistic kind of wrecks. Nothing on the coal train derailed and the only damage to the KJRY'S tracks was done by the clean-up crew because of the narrow confines of the area .
Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) is coal fired. GRU also has a unit which is oil or natural gas burning. So a coal train in Florida is not unusual.
The coal trains have really died down. Use to see tons of them come through here and not much of any. Same with the oil trains, we are the main hub here next door to North Dakota and I mean it’s dead!!!!! Until the gas prices go up again they will trickle out slowly.
Hi Davey, a painted end on coal cars indicates the cars have "rotary couplers" allowing the cars to be tipped to dump the coal out without having to un-couple the cars. It saves a lot of time to empty the train load of coal.
@@daveyjones662 Those cars do not have a painted end. The rotary types can also be opened manually to empty them from the bottom. For the silver rotary coupler cars you may also see the ends painted green. On the brown "rust color" cars they usually paint those rotary coupler cars with yellow ends.

Diamond overpowers the horn!
The nearest coal-fired electric generating plant is in Lakeland, but that train was headed toward Tampa, no doubt for export.
I was told it was going to the Apollo Power Plant south of Tampa
@@JawTooth That power plant was not listed in the list I found, but the TECO Big Bend Power Plant is indeed a major coal fired plant. However, a lot of coal is shipped from Tampa for export.
I have a feeling that this diamond interlocker is a tad worn out generally they are kind of loud but this one is real loud, they do wear out over time and have to be replaced
This one was replaced about a year ago.
The coal may be going to a port for shipment overseas. Coal which is likely too toxic for use in the U.S. - too much heavy metals and sulfur probably can be burned in other countries.
Sad case that is. Darn EPA CARB
And other regulatory fearmongers.
That's why Champion paper is gonna be a gymnasium for spoils brats instead of a paper mill. Sad.
In the next video, I want to see you on that bike. ( LOL )
Cute dog
They say in bout 10 maybe 20 years there will be no more coal trains. We will be onto other fuels.. what do you think?? Or anyone
Won't happen
We will still have coal trains in 20 years. It is true that power plants are constantly being closed or converted to natural gas but we still have a large demand for coal in this country and we ship coal to other countries. It has taken a huge hit , especially in Kentucky and West Virginia but there are still a lot of big mines and the Powder River Basin. Some of the new candidates for president were running on the basis of getting rid of coal powered power plants. I have relatives from Kentucky and that was not a popular idea there to say the least.
Maybe the left's big brains can design rail cars to haul sunlight and wind for those areas that don't have that much.😏
I have relatives in WVA that were registered democrats until Big 0 killed off 6 million coal miners jobs.
It's a great vedeo
They should make the outside corners of those flangeways out of plastic !
Another interesting video. How about backing it with the song "Diamonds are Forever".
Is there a link to a map of this junction...?
Nice video
It is used for all of those 1970's vintage Coupe DeVille's.
I like. Train videos on RUclips jawtooth 👍
I may hafta add a "crotch rot" car to my rolling stock. Lol
I have to wonder, what makes someone want to spray that on something?
Love the video
Stupidity. Ton of decent fun graffiti out there. If you’re gonna deface property, at least be good and clever about it, or artistic...not a twit. 😊
may have had more meaning when it was with other cars when it was done
Timex Wi maybe. But it means only one thing to me.
The trains were so long i thought you looped them
Lol, it seems like it sometimes but no, they are just really long one. They get even longer with Precision Railroading
Those two train sure were quiet. Without their horn's they could have really surprised someone walking near the diamond/
If you get up to newberry you have to try out timbers Charlie’s.
Where does this train go
Coal was going to the power plant at Apolo Beach Powerplant which is just south of Tampa
Jaw Tooth cool thanks for the information
The coal trains have really died down. Use to see tons of them come through here and not much of any. Same with the oil trains, we are the main hub here next door to North Dakota and I mean it’s dead!!!!! Until the gas prices go up again they will trickle out slowly.
Was that millennium force by the railroad crossing Jawtooth
Yes
why is it on coal train that one end of the car is only painted
Hi Davey, a painted end on coal cars indicates the cars have "rotary couplers" allowing the cars to be tipped to dump the coal out without having to un-couple the cars. It saves a lot of time to empty the train load of coal.
@@tomy6917 what about the ones you can unload from the bottom what color are them
@@daveyjones662 Those cars do not have a painted end. The rotary types can also be opened manually to empty them from the bottom. For the silver rotary coupler cars you may also see the ends painted green. On the brown "rust color" cars they usually paint those rotary coupler cars with yellow ends.
@@tomy6917 ok and thank you so much I was wondering about it
@@daveyjones662 you're welcome :)
