END OF THE LINE for the EMD SD60: NS Funeral Train for Scrap

- Norfolk Southern has phased out their SD60 line. Some have been sold to WATCO (and can still be enjoyed in other videos on my channel), others went to leasers, and some just wound up going to the scrapyard. These 17 units were the latter, and they're waiting to be picked up from the CSX interchange and brought to the torch.
I feel your pain train enthusiasts, I am going through the same thing with all the Boeing 747 that are getting kicked to the curb.
Also extremely depressing!
I’m more personally bothered by Airbus A321’s replacing Boeing 757’s (and even 737’s). The MAX crisis made things awful, and the virus turned the world upside down. When this downturn passes, I have no clue what to expect, but I have still been letdown by Boeing. Although Airbus has gotten nailed by the virus situation too. And don’t be surprised if Boeing gets bailed out by the government.
As a younger railfan, I am fortunate to have seen an SD60 working on the NS before they did this.
Norfolk Southern: Ugh we're so low on power!
Also Norfolk Southern: *Scraps an entire fleet of locomotives*
Very sad sight having grown up seeing these units on the ns system😭😭
That's very sad. I remember when EMD SD60's seemed new compared to older EMD's.
They served our country well. We'll miss you SD60's
Such a sad sight... especially since i use to railfan in kenova and saw quite a few SD60’s
Interesting how many of the units retired bij NS, CSX and UP end up going straight for scrap. Even these widecabs
Thankfully 2 CSX SD60s were saved by Pennsylvania Northeastern (8701 and 8711) 8701 is in Lansdale sometimes used on PN L160 while 8711 assists CP SD40-2 5577 at Warminster on J930. 8711 is also a former EMD Demonstrator. Both actually looked like CSX hardly used them but that's what you get with EMD, pure quality and no rubbish if you take care of em when needed. These twins also almost replaced C39-8 8212 cause that thing is an unreliable GE POS!
New rule- GET CLOSER WITH THE DRONE!!!!!! Peek in the windows !!
Hello darkness my old friend I come to see you once again
Sad they couldn’t find new homes
Agreed!
I totally agree
You would think a shortline would have bought them up
I agree, recondition and sell to small RR and international markets; get half+ of new value.
Indeed
Strange that they're not going to be converted over to SD60E.
We were talking about EMD's different engines at work today and it is sad to see NS getting rid of them, I've run them before and they were not that bad but I don't work on them and their mechanical records tell the story. At one time EMD was king but the SD50's SD60's were pretty much flops from what I've read, ones that were modified did turn out to be a reliable engine though. If I had to pick a favorite road locomotive it would have to be the SD40, it had the best power to weight ratio of almost any locomotive ever built, they would pull until they just couldn't unlike so many of the micro processor controlled locomotives, but that progress for you.
Steven Spaziani I agree, the SD40 is probably one of the best all around locos ever built, so many have stood the test of time and are still in use today👍🏼
I always loved all EMD locos especially SD40-2's I also loved SD9's i always thought the SD60m's were solid locos compared to the GE units which always catch fire and blow turbos I've heard GE has a better warranty program tho!
Close to where I work, there's a line of UP SD60s and SD60Ms in storage. Some of the locos are from the SP and some are the three window widecabs.
Goodbye old friends :'(
Excellent video ! So so sad to see so many of these units going to scrap. Thanks for sharing your fantastic video :-))
Glad you liked it!
I had to watch, over the course of 4 months, 15 locomotives being torn down and scrapped. It made my heart hurt, because these locos could still have been useful...somewhere.
Edit: Oh...my...word. Seeing the engine numbers makes me think that this entire string was brought by NS to my town, where they were scrapped! We have part of the Detroit Corridor, between Fort Wayne, Ind., and Detroit, that comes through my town in southern Michigan.
It's so sad. I hate to see locomotives get scrapped. It must have been really sad to see all the steam locomotives in the deadline back n the 40 and 50s.
Outstanding drone footage.....thanks for sharing
RIP. Sad sight. Less variety on the NS.
They're becoming the next CSX.
What a nicely constructed video! I love it (except for the sad subject, that is).
Plenty of good deal's on Train Horns at the scrapyard while they last any thoughts where the scrapyard is
Sad to see. I remember building these.
R.I.P all of the SD60s
I was sad to see them go. I liked them just that much.
Even a triclops in the mix
Their pullig days are over😥😥,,A lot of power being retired...
Very sad to see those SD60 series locomotives to be scrapped from the NS, UP. They were the railroad workhorses, beautiful locomotives. Don't have them in my Ho collection. If they are ever released by scaletrains in the rivet counter. I will have some of them.
I was very fortunate enough to catch the Kanawha River Railroad in action last year when I was driving through West Virginia and managed to see some of their ex-NS SD60 units switching around Belle. Wish I pulled my camera out earlier, because I barely missed them by about 15 seconds!
The rest of SD60s drops near by awaiting their faith.
To everything (turn, turn, turn)......There is a season (turn, turn, turn)......And a time to every purpose, under heaven.
BNSF bought a crap ton of the sd60 units from UP so maybe these won't be scrapped but sold off
Great video!
Thanks!
Honestly these fine workhorses has had their time.
Engines must be upgraded for lower emissions and that is not always economical viable.
Most likely some of the frames will live on in complete rebuilds probaly with modern modular gensets.
Also most engineers would appreciate these old uncomfortable workplaces be removed.
that only is for new. it dont apply for rebuilds
Have any passed into preservation?
I grew up with EMD in Canada
CRPULSE300
You're right about them investing in the AC44C6M and SD70ACC revolution. I just wish they'd bought more EMD's. One of the African-American conductors I know, now retired, said GE threatened them about the transport of their gas turbines. This retired Caucasian conductor who used to work for Seaboard said what are they gonna do when those Dash 9's start getting old?
All but one of these seem to have a section of the bodywork removed and something removed about a quarter of the way back from the front. I assume that whatever was taken out as either for spare parts or to salvage such as the generator for copper. So does anybody know what it is some missing?
Railroad has so much money to waste they would rather buy new than to maintain the old. The RR will spend $1 to save 50 cents.
Where is this at
NS is getting rid of most if not all DC locomotives for the PSR garbage. Even the ACUs are going to storage. 60E is a failed attempt to keep DC power, they are also going to be short lived.
Is this opening in the top of these units where the turbocharger were installed?
Dynamic brake resistor grids I believe. Notice also the turbo stacks are capped, so the prime movers will likely be reused.
Most likely they will be broken for parts to keep other SD60s working. So it's not all a waste. Shortlines need used parts
Interesting that they removed the dynamic brake grids on them beforehand.
That's so sad. Apart from a bit of dust on their noses, they all look pretty good. Still, we all reach the end of the line some day, I suppose. Wouldn't want to be the engineer who has to haul them off.
The NS sd60’s EMD engines were retired and scrapped
I was there last year and i saw a good few sd60s sitting there and now there are more of them parked
So I guess they're not doing more SD60E rebuilds???
Sad day indeed :(
I think that program was canned in favor of the SD70 rebuilds.
Sd60e’s we’re rebuilt from SD50’s..
SD60Es were from SD60s, SD40Es were from SD50s.
I worked for a company that did over a hundred sd60e upgrades. Electrical cabinets, switch gear, and 1600 strand cables..from 2012 to 2015
Good ole classic locomotives from both EMD and GE going to waist the ex-cr and lms widecab dash 8s were my second favorite GE locomotives I also love widecab EMD locomotives too especially the SD80MACs they along with the UP and CP SD90MACs and 90/43MACs and the 90MAC-H2s was my favorite EMD units out of all the other EMDs just like the CSX CW60AC and UP AC6000CWs are my favorite GEs out of all the rest it's sad to see ole classic locomotives sold to other railroads or scrapped. Always liked looking at the marker lights on all the ex-conrail units from both GE and EMD...
If I were Bloomberg I'd buy some start my own railroad with rare locomotives lol. But I may have to do that on an H.O. Scale budget. Even then way too much
Great video! It sure is a sad sight to see these go. Any idea why they were retired? When were they built?
Hybrid K5LA at the beginning. Nice!
What a sad end to such a beautiful emd
There all in my NS yard in Ohio sitting there getting ready to head to LTEX
It's sad what they're doing to one of EMD's comeback kid. It may not have been able to outsell the Dash 8 but it out lasted the model. Norfolk Southern had those locomotives as solid performers for three decades. I saw a 204 in Greenville, SC come in the yard with an an ailing ES44DC, and 2 C44-9W's. I knew the crew. They came in on track two. It took two hours. They had to go across the whole yard of twelve tracks at least and pick up a parked EMD SD60 spartan cab. It was started and idling, isolated when I returned from studying at the library. They had the the ES44DC at the rear behind the SD60 as a heavy freight car. The 2nd unit, the short hood forward C44-9W was already short hood forward, was now point unit, and the other C44-9W was unit two. If that happens again, they won't have any SD60's to help them out. Sadly, I say farewell to an era.
Replace them with N&W articulated steam power. Everybody loves that!
A Diesel-electric locomotive is a box, a rectangular prism however long you choose. They could not be more generic, which is why no one will ever patiently wait at trackside to see a meticulously restored SD60 come down the line.
Do you also mean the early streamlines plus the occasional oddball such as the train master or the Baldwin Lima Hamilton big switchers?
How many NS sd60’s were there
I've never seen so many locomotives together !!
Sad but drone footage rocks AC!
Excellent drone videography! BTW, I didn't see a FRED on the tanker car in the beginning. Was there? Bad news if not with a jet black car on the tail and no warning light.
O man makes me sick seeing the triclops in there one of my favorite locomotives I hope to never see one Bing torched I woint be able to Handel it):
Why scrap the SD60's when there still SD40's running?
Seem like a terrible waste
Unfortunately NS has bought into this "Precisioned Schedule Railroading" like CSX that they are getting rid of anything that doesn't produce maximum shareholder profits! More than likely, there's nothing wrong with these faithful old engines.....just not enough modern equipment on them and the new management unwilling to invest the money to upgrade them!
Why are they not rebuilding them?
You got video of the locos being hauled away? Great video by the way like here in australia sad see the older locos gone.
Man, thought I was going to see dead engines rolling... !
And That’s What Wall-E Is Going To Scrap Them.
Did they pull the engines or are they being scrapped with the rest of the rig?
Or you could say, "They've been fired"!
I feel bad for all those SD60’s and the worst on I feel about was 6795
And all of this thanks to Alan Shaw
Sad sight but usually new power is coming no.
Any rail fan and or locomotive horn collector need a Nathan P5 horn? There are a few of them. Lol The P5 horn off of NS SD60 #6671 would need a major restoration fix which is a good deep cleaning and re tuning to get that horn sounding nice again.
What happened to those sd60’s
All of them are scarpped
What was removed from the units right behind the cab?
Dad: why you crying so damn loud
Maybe someday I will restore one or 4 SD60’s
Are numbers 6900 and 6920 among the unlucky sd60s?
So many Leslie RS3L's and Nathan P5's.
idk, the SD60's never appealed to me, kinda like SD40s that took Viagra to get bigger, just blah. Anyway, in principle, It just stinks decent locomotives get scrapped/dumped on a whim. Ive seen several railroad graveyard videos where they just sit and rot. Pisses me off. Its unreal how many NS scrapped recently. They could have sold them to minor league railroads at the price of scrap. its similar to decommissioning a Navy ship. it was part of your life, in this case the engineers and conductors who operated them. Im sure they're misty eyed seeing them go.
I wish NS could shrink those units into HO scale. I would add an ESU Loksound v.5 with a pair of sugar cube speakers with a TCS Keep Alive.
They all have almost brand new PTC antennas, sure these aren't getting rebuilt?
NS removed all the air boxes, plus they’re sitting far from any NS shop and close to a scrapyard.
It's a shame NS wasted so much money to install PTC on these units just to scrap them. Just seems like a huge waste, especially when these 710-powered locomotives still have so much life left in them. But oh well. Rest in piece ol' SD60 friends. Back to the Class II's and shortlines for me... I hate railroad management and Precision scheduled railroading.
Wait why did they abandoned all of those
Outdated locomotives and less need for power.
O!!
What a shame that these locomotives cannot be refurbished after so many thousands of miles of trouble free service!
Thank a major role to the EPA. They wont fit their insane requirements. Same reason all newer models are in storage and are 5000mi garbage units
I think I saw a triclops 6809 amongst these. Is anybody going to save 1 of the 10 in preservation?
Are SD 40s still used
yes
dknowles60 ok
dknowles60 why aren’t sd 60s being scrapped when sd40s are still being used
This is depressing. Those units aren't very old and likely had a lot of life left in them. Rust in pieces :/
Who made them? GE or GM? How old are they?
GM emd
@@brandedmcgowan9414 Thanks!
@@snakebait5118 you got it!👍
I don't think it's that big of a deal
Should send them to Australia were short on locos
Nice K5LA
That's so sad.
Alexa, play Country roads.
Edit: that actually kinda worked
It can't be all that long ago these units were fitted with wide cabs??
The widenose cab was an option on the SD60 series. Those units so equipped are SD60M. Most likely, of these units, the widenoses were bought new by Conrail and the spartan cab units were bought new by NS.
Norfolk Southern is nearing the end of the line itself! Baltimore terminal, over 150 years of rail service is down to less then 5 train crews a day! All of the road work/trains have been given to Harrisburg. Baltimore is dying all thanks to Norfolk Southern and it's piss poor management. As a former engineer who worked for/suffered under NS I hope the bastards go bankrupt! F--k em!
I'd love to have a bell from a locomotive.
most likely going to be rebuilt
At this time, they've likely already been scrapped.
Wonder why they don't rebuild them. That's the way anymore to lazy to try to fix something just buy new. I would have went broke a long time ago if I didn't rebuild things. I bought a cabover freightliner brand new in 1980 and I am still driving today I have rebuild everything on the truck several times it's been paid for since 1985 and I would not trade it for a brand new one straight across. That's my way of thinking
I thought ns was rebuilding sd60s
sd 40s
