I love how none of the gf are being like "I'm way better than you", they cheer for the guys, congratulate them for the outcome and they just enjoy that time together, and I love how the guys respect the ladies training as well. Lovely couples.

Ok so the guy with the CrossFit girlfriend was doing real pull-ups with a band. The girl was activating the least amount of muscle that she possibly could by swinging up instead of pulling up. That is not a workout that is acting like a child at a jungle gym.

Molly McCausland pull ups should be strict and not rely on momentum. The only form of pull up that momentum is acceptable for is a muscle up
The function(and the meaning) of a kip is originally from gymnastics to _avoid_ muscle engagement and even they know that it's a strain on your joints. You can't just bastardize a form from a completely different movement without any consideration towards it's original function.

(also, can you even string together kipping pull ups? while it doesn't involve a lot of strength, it is hard to do if you've never done them before)

Instead of having a normall weight barbell small 10 lb plates and the big plates going up to 45 lbs.

When i read "8 pull-ups" i thought, damn this will be an ok begginer workout, then i see the bands, the swinging and i cried in a corner since then.
Most regular beginners can't do 8 regular pull ups, I know if you've been training for a while it'll start seeming relatively easy but it is quite a difficult one.
Though I think we can all agree the girlfriends "pull ups" were more physics study than workout considering how much momentum she was using.

Well that makes no sense, bodybuilding and any form of exercise is about improving your body to lift more, for longer. Form is most important as it avoids injury and ridicule.

Amanda Perea - If you go to a box (CrossFit gym) that doesn't care about form, then you should get the hell outta there. My box is amazing and it's mandatory for new people to take a 3-day course on the fundamental movements in CrossFit. We also spend lots of time just working on form before adding any weight, or trying to do a prescribed movement. We also get corrected on even the minor details because proper form is very important.

I do crossfit and we do a combination of "regular" pull ups and then we do kipping pull ups. We usually do a lot more of them because they are more simple, but they still work out muscles in your arms.

That's CrossFit for you maximizing tiredness and while minimizing progression. Imagine them having to do the same movement at 50% the speed.

Donna S depending on the body type it can be harder or easier her body type from what I've seen makes her skinny like skinny naturally with little to no curves. So its harder to gain muscle if she were a endomorph like jordan then she'd have more muscle.
Could also be that maybe she doesnt want to have visible muscle? Maybe she doesn't eat enough to meet her TDE or exceed it to gain weight? Lots of variables at play we dont know of

I've considered taking pole dancing lessons when I'm an adult because I love dance and I've heard it really helps you become more comfortable with yourself. Plus dancing or something like that is the only way I ever enjoy a workout

That girl is cheating on those pull ups by not using proper form. She's using momentum and swinging, which makes it easier and doesn't target the correct muscles - the lats and biceps.
they are kipping pull-ups. Kipping pull-ups use momentum unlike strict pull ups. It's a compound movement. Unless the wod says to do strict pull ups, she's doing it correctly. They're 2 variations of the same exercise. Plus, to properly do a kipping pull up one has to know how to do a strict pull up.

they are called Kipping pull ups because your using your lower body to gain momentum in the upper body. There is some lat involvement when doing kipping pull-ups because you're doing a "front lever-like" action to push on the bar as you're snapping your hips. And if you control your body on the way down, the arms and back are being loaded during the eccentric. also, the exercise is meant for doing multiple continuous reps, not for building muscle. that's not the point of the kip.
People have been doing them forever in gyms. Look at anyone doing strict pull-up, I guarantee you toward the end of the set they're gonna do a little lower body swing, aka a kip, to knock it out. why? because it allows you to get more reps when the body is fatigued.

Bro I powerlift but I'm 5'1" and 130lbs and my man is 190lbs, just shy of 6ft. How about you try a lifting workout with a man 60lbs heavier than you of a similar fitness level? With upper body, men CLEARLY have a lot more muscle mass, that's why men and women's chests look different? But women can be similarly strong in lower body but people somehow forgot that we're typically smaller than dudes: Compare Wei-Ling Chen's world record squat of 336lb at 105lbs body weight to Andrey Malanichev's world record 1014lb squat at 342 lbs. 1014 is a lot more than 336, but she's moving 3.2x bw and he's only moving 2.9x bw. Which is why strength sports use weight classes. Crossfit chick is literally stronger than her man on Overhead even though he's heavier and a dude, she'd shred him in squats, deadlift and leg press especially with bodyweight corrected for.

Bloo byrd It's not about how many you do. It's about how you do them. I could do 100 squats at 250lb without breaking parallel. But I would gain more muscle and make it more worth my time if I just do 25 at 250lb and break parallel. If you don't break parallel, then it's not a squat. It's just like with any exercise. You can't count any of what she did as a pull-up.

They're called Kipping pull ups. Their different from strict pull ups. Yes, they're easier than strict pull ups, but that doesn't make them a walk in the park. Trust me. The reason her trainer didn't tell her they were wrong was because that WOD (work out of the day) did not call for strict pull ups. If strict pull ups were in the work out, she would have done a basic hang to pull her chin above the bar.
