This role was perfect for Arnold at this time in his early acting career. Didn’t have to try to act or show emotion. Was able to stay one tone and could look wooden throughout the film. Catapulted him into THE action star!
I've always said this - NO one could play robotic and unexpressive like Arnold. lol
The first choice for the Terminator was O.J. Simpson but they decided no one would believe him to be a cold heartless killer.
Actually, that can be even more difficult to pull off.
At the reception of the audition for this movie:
Secretary: "What's your name?"
AS: "Arnold"
Secretary: "You don't have to start acting robotic until you are inside the audition, sir"
Lance Henriksen was considered too, back when the Terminator was just gonna be someone that could blend into a crowd super easy, before they decided to make it a tank instead XD
There is a deleted scene where Lt. Traxler (the black cop) was beginning to believe Reese. It was right after he told the psychologist "It's just him and me." It then goes to Traxler and his partner in the other room and Traxler takes off his glasses and is deep in thought. His partner shrugs it off, saying Reese is just crazy and Traxler goes, "I hope you're right." Also when Reese finds Sarah and runs with her out the police station, they are stopped by a dying Traxler. He even addresses Reese by name. He then tells Kyle Sarah *had* to stay alive and gave his pistol to Reese and tells him to do all he can. Traxler has been in the game a long time. He knows liars and crazies. Sees them day in and day out. And now that he has experienced some of the future, with just ONE of them, he knows humanity is fucked.
I've seen those deleted scenes on DVD. I wish they would release an extended version with all these scenes added in.
@@nathan8590, me too. The 2 deleted scenes with Traxler at the Station need to be reintegrated.
Thnx for the info drop.
crazy i never heard of this thanks for sharing lol
The book adaptation elaborates a bit more on Traxler’s thoughts. He recognizes Reese as being actually traumatized by war. He knows the signs, but he’s too young to be a Vietnam veteran. It doesn’t fit.
Don’t make us wait too long for terminator 2. That has to be next
T2 T2 T2 watch it right away - it has the most impact after this one
@@NecropsY1 T2 is the best of this saga.

Thank god they only made 2.
My favourite part, and a sad fact, it´s when Kyle said that he always wondered what Sarah was thinking at that moment of the picture. And she was thinking of Kyle during that tape record. Lovers across time....
Funniest line in this movie to me is when The Terminator scrolls through his list of responses when the landlord asks about the bad odor coming from the room and he chooses to say "Fuck you, asshole."
And he learned that line from one of the punks he encounters while looking for clothes.
Never realised that one..... good catch......😁🔥😆
@@alanmurray5963
With autism, it's a little too easy for me to catch details that most people overlook until it gets pointed out.
He is a "learning machine".
One of the punks was Bill Paxton and he was in Aliens with Michael Biehn (Reese)
Vince asked if people 40 years in the future would know how to unlock stuff. Lol. This movie was made in 1984. Next year we will be 40 years in their future. So, I believe yes, they would know that stuff. Love you guys reactions. Keep up the amazing work.
Not only that, but we were supposed to be bombed in the next 13 years so all of the future soldiers who drove around in cars during the war would be driving cars from around this time anyhow. It's not like they had flying cars or something and would have no idea what 80's cars were like. Obviously the car Kyle was in in the flashback (flash forward) was from this time so at least one vehicle made it all the way to the future.
In 1997, when the nuclear blast happened virtually all cars unlocked in that fashion.
He was looking at it from the perspective of a person who doesn’t know if Kyle was even alive at a time when people drove cars. He wasn’t looking at it from the perspective of someone who’s watched all the films, and they know that Kyle’s timeline involves the normal world. He doesn’t know when the world stopped being the world. Stop being a goober.
All cars up August 29th 1997, when the nukes went off.
Fun Fact: Arnold served in the Austrian army so he knew a good bit on how to handle firearms for the movie.
Arnold was already a multi-millionaire long before he was became an actor and head of. He made millions from real-estate even before he became a celebrity. Not many ppl know that 😉
Don't forget to watch "Terminator 2. Judgment day" It's even more fun!
Not a patch on this, no way
Reese knew how to deal with "old" cars (from the '80s and '90s) because, by his time in the future (as of this movie), the machines had taken over by the mid/late-'90s. So automobiles in his history pretty much stopped developing by then and wouldn't have security features we've since become accustomed to.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Sarah left some 1984 101 tapes for John so they could know where to find her, how to get away, etc. etc.
Yup. August 29th 1997
The Terminator is one of those movies that everything else is compared too. She was right "I'll Be Back" was THE catchphrase, and she knows it 30 years later.
Did you ever play Robocop vs Terminator video game?
One of the great movies. If you take one thing from this, let it be: The future is not written.
"The future is not set. There is no fate but what we make for ourselves."
Doc Brown said that as well to Marty and Jennifer 😉
You can take that from T2. T1 says the future IS written.
@@parallaxnick637 It's a philosophical point about free will vs determinism. Given the nightmare scenario they present, of a vicious AI overlord, what can we CHOOSE to do about it. The movie is giving us a dilemma and asking us if we even want to choose better values.
"What's happened, happened. Which is an expression of faith in the mechanics of the world. It's not an excuse to do nothing." - Neil
As the Terminator sustains more more damage throughout the film, You can actually see some very distinct the differences in both the puppets, and the make up. After the police shooting the living tissue is dead that’s why the make up is very pale and it looks like the skin is hanging off his head. At this point the Terminator is a robot wearing a rotting corpse for skin. Hence the smell.
Made me feel old that James Camron is the "Avatar"-guy and not the director of "The Abys" or, you know, "Titanic"
T2 was also directed by Camron and is great as well. We meet a young John Connor and get the famous Arnold line, "I need your cloths, your boots, and your motorcycle."
Fantastic sci fi / horror film.
T2 is also great, But this film has a different vibe to it. Can't beat that synth score!
This is an excellent action/horror/suspense movie. And I can't wait for you to get to the sequel, which is one of the best sequels ever.
Amen
Arnold told a friend he had to go be in some &&&& movie. Little did he know. LOL.
This was the movie which "made" James Cameron. He was pretty much an unknown. This was a VERY low budget film, yet it made huge profits at the box office.
The actor playing the psychologist just died today at the age of 81 I believe. Rip
Sarah: I didn't do anything?
Reece: No, but you will. (Struggles to hide excitement) 😂😂
Terminator 2 is one of the best sequels of all time, hope you watch it!!
It shook my world as I watched this by myself when I was 8 at 12 in the morning, scared the crap out of me. 80 and 90s movies were HARD! Thanks for reacting, it was fun😊
Hell yeah! I had terrible nightmares of that exoskeleton crawling after me for months... an amazing film!
Hard yes, at least we got to see movies for what the story was trying to give us, an experience. These days story seems to have been woke cancelled and all the other PC restrictions. I feel sorry for the coming generations!
Haha, my parents wouldn't allow me to watch these kinds of films but my amazing sister used to sneak us downstairs after our parents went to sleep and let us watch all these action and horror films! Loved the 80s.
Same m8
@@fxzero666 Endoskeleton lol
Terminator 2 is an absolute masterpiece, it carries the story that much further and has so many more aspects to it that really flesh out the characters. The special FX still hold up today as with Predator, Robocop and Jurassic Park. The music is on point and the ending is truly epic and very poignant. It delves into every aspect of humanity from selflessness to family and revenge to redemption. I hope you two watch it very soon as it will change the way you see films and how they are supposed to be done.
The 1st Terminator is the best combination of action and horror
Aliens and Predator as well.
Can you believe James Cameron sold the rights to the whole franchise for a dollar? He was trying to kickstart his directing career so he sold the script and the rights for a buck under the condition he could direct it.
And what a deal that was... he made the best action sequel of all time!
In hindsight, I think it was the smart choice. He was able to kickstart his career and get even more money in the long run. This movie was what allowed him to direct Aliens.
An absolute epic movie, and Judgement Day is a master piece, that fleshes put the rest of this story. Arguably the best action movie ever made!
I usually agree with that last part until i remember True Lies...also directed by Cameron.
I'd give T2 the edge just for the emotional punch that one delivers. True Lies is exceptional in every way though. If we're going just by action and effects then they're absolutely on par with each other. Cameron the producer is kinda sus *cough*Terminator Dark Fate*cough*..but Cameron the director can do no wrong..
Two words.... Hard Boiled 😅
True Lies is a great fun action movie, but T2 is iconic. 30 years from now I can imagine ppl mentioning T2, but not True Lies. I even consider Predator 1, Robocop 1, and Total Recall, greater than True Lies.
5:28 AMT Hardballer. Notice how Arnie flinches every time he fires it.
7:30 They worked that scene into Terminator: Resistance.
14:25 Name, rank, and serial number. Part of the tragedy of Reese's character is that all he's ever known is endless war.
16:48 Michael Biehn actually studied the Warsaw Ghetto resistance fighters to make Reese more authentic.
22:16 "He's gunzerking!" He's got an Armalite AR-18 in his right hand and a Franchi SPAS-12 in his left hand.
Great reaction! I’m so glad you didn’t know anything about it beforehand. Looking forward to the part 2 reaction!
The sequel is amazing.. but this one right here is a god damn masterpiece ❤
They are a matched set. By matched set I mean they complete the story arc. Social effects CGI advanced remarkably for T2. But at type end of T2 the story was complete. Which is at least partly why James C. Was not involved in any 8ther others that followed for a long time.
@@billallen1307, first is streets ahead, as a Terminator film anyway. 2 was entertaining, nothing on this.
@@GGGritzer Says you. They study T2 in film school
@@LukeLovesRose, pity there were such a shedload of obvious mistakes & obvious goofs. Rushed & turned into a money maker rather than telling a story. I would say they study it for sfx.
@@GGGritzer They study T2 for Cameron's immersive cinematography.
If critics analyzed Stanley Kubrick movies like you do, we would still be watching John Ford-style Westerns
Classic, can't wait for your reaction if the sequel, not only one of the best sequels ever made but also, in my opinion, the greatest action film of all time
36:00 It's a time loop, this all HAS to happen: Kyle goes back in time, protecting Sarah, becomes John's father, Sarah is warned about the future and prepares John becoming the leader of the resistance, John gives Kyle a picture of Sarah and later sends him back in time.
If you watch T2, please do the longer director's cut. Some of the additional scenes are really helpful to understand some things
Amazing reaction! Can’t wait to see your reaction on terminator 2. It’s the best one
Wow! I thought this was WAY better than the sfx overblown second...............
Some of these actors turn up in the Alien franchise. There was a tv series called The Sarah Connor Chronicles which was very good.
Kyle always wondered what Sarah was thinking about when that picture was taken. Turns out she was thinking of him.
Arnold was absolutely terrifying in this. He was my childhood hero!!! Reece said he always wondered what she was thinking about in that picture. Turns out, she was thinking about him
I saw this , t2 and T3 at the drive thru at ages 4, 12, and 20 I enjoyed the experience and the movies
The eye cutting scene still makes me sqimish
When they were looking to cast the part for the title role, originally the film company wanted O.J. Simpson, but ironically they felt that he didn't look the part to be a killer. Also at one point they wanted Arnold to play Reese since he was always in the hero roles, but both James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger felt it was a dumb idea, because then he would have to find someone bigger than Arnold to play the villain. But both of them felt that Arnold related much more to the Terminator and Cameron called up his own agent and immediately cast him in the title role.
and Patricia Rashad was supposed to be Sarah Conner but she turned it down to do the Cosby show
There was also some concept art of Lance Henriksen (the balding police guy) playing the terminator.
Now you gotta do the second one. 1&2 combined are probably the greatest sci fi/action story told on film.
Before Arnold Schwarzenegger was s cast as the titular character, OJ Simpson was considered, but James Cameron changed his mind saying, "He's too much of a nice guy to play the role of ruthless killer." 😳🤦
Tom Selleck, Lance Henriksen, Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson were considered for the role.
Bruce Springsteen, Michael O'Keefe, Tommy Lee Jones, Christopher Reeve, Scott Glenn, Treat Williams, Sting, and Matt Dillon were considered for the role of Kyle Reese.
Lea Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jessica Harper, Melissa Sue Anderson, Rosanna Arquette, and Lisa Langolis were considered for Sarah Connor.
in 1984, this was considered the most violent movie ever made, due to the police station attack.
Having been alive in 1984, I beg to differ since both Straw Dogs and A Clockwork had already been released. Geez, even Assault on Precinct 13 is way more infamously violent than this.
@@thisishowthetruthdies684 yeah, I was alive in 1984 too, and serving in the military. I remember when the movie came out, and paying attention to the media, it was discussed about how violent it was perceived, considering all those other movies that had come out before.

My favorite movie of all time. A true classic.
Amen
I'm one of the rare people that prefer it to T2.
@Michele Graham I love both, but ive always had a soft spot for T1.
@@bloodgroundgaming7871, me too. Nothing beats the almost inescapable horror of the original.........
Kyle explaining to Sarah the what, who, and how of the situation when they first meet is one of the greatest uses of exposition in an action film.
He's literally spilling out what his mission and statement is, while blazing through the streets of L.A. trying to dodge their killer.
You get a hefty, direct explanation of why the movie exists, while being transported to the next scene, cutting for time, and all the while being an action scene itself.
Terminator 1 and 2 are such good examples of how to pace action films.
The dude played by Henrickson (who also played Bishop on Aliens) was originally conceived by Cameron to have the Terminator role but then Arnold's name and pictures somehow came across his desk.
The rest is history!
The actress who plays Sarah Conner is also in a movie by Stephen King called " Children Of The Corn ".
26:40 Yup, motels used to have something called "efficiencies" basically a small apartment that you could rent on a weekly basis, was pretty useful if you were going to be in town for a couple of weeks on business or something and didn't want to eat out for every meal.
Vince and Shoshana you two are simply the best. THANKS!
Terminator 1 will always be my favorite, although they are both great. The original could use a digitally updated version for the few scenes where the effects are outdated, just so modern viewers can fully enjoy the story without being pulled out of it.
I like the gritty and grainy look of the original. Even with the outdated graphics. It's got a certain aesthetic that reminds me of an 80's comic book. Even the stop-motion Terminator was terrifying. I wouldn't change a thing.
@@michelegraham1181 I like it too, I would like to have both versions.
What Sarah was riding was a scooter.
A _"moped"_ has pedals like a bicycle, but the pedals are mostly just used to get yourself to a rolling start for the motor to come on and take over... It's like halfway between a bicycle and a scooter in range, size, and power. They have all but completely been phased out in favor of much lighter, electric versions. ;-]
James Cameron's very first feature film as a Director... And the idea for this film came from a nightmare he had while he was in Prague.... Seen where you see the Terminator rise out of the fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥 that was his Nightmare.... Some of the best horror films in sci-fi films, come from nightmares.
This mov was so fresh in 1984 , it was the talk of Jr High, saying you have to see it and it blew us away!! Love the reactions 😂🤣👍✌️
T2 is one of the most iconic films in cinematic history. I patiently await!
This first movie was a great starter to give you the general idea of the story....but 2 is the epitome of the series...n absolute thrill ride.
It was made about 20 years later so the movie tech etc is so much better....2 is one of the best movies ever made.

Terminator 2 is from 1991. So, only 7 years later, not 20.
@@Eternal82Soul I think Terminator 2 is supposed to be set eat least 10 or 12 years after T1 because John is clearly not 7 years old. But yeah, definitely not 20.
@@michelegraham1181 You are right, I think. Wikipedia says T2 takes place in 1995, although I don't think that was mentioned in the movie. At least I don't remember it. Can't say that John looked like 10 years old, though, which he would have been in 1995... But Spills51 said that the movie was made 20 years later, which isn't the case. It was made 7 years later.
Yes, watch 2!
Its been regarded by many as the perfect action movie. And set the bar for action movies afterwards.
First, the people in this future, which was around today, only had old cars since the war was in 1997.
Second, Arnold was hired to be the good guy, but he asked to play the robot because he knew he wasn't a great actor.
Headgear like the one the guy at the begining was wearing is called a "Toque" here in Canada, and has been worn in many different styles for many generations.
Mopeds are motorized, pedal-assisted scooters, the gasoline version of e-bikes. Scooters don't have pedals, or pegs usually, often just a flat floor for your feet, typically more storage than full motorcycles, and are mechanically speed-limited in most jurisdictions. Might be somewhat different now, as I haven't kept up with gas cycles for a while.
16:04 Along with John Connor, there are several in the Future War that were born before the nuclear war. Knowledge was passed down as well as as field experience. Plenty of of technicals (civilian vehicles armored and repurposed for combat). Reese was one of the more experienced veterans by 2029.
This came out in theaters when I was in high school. It's hard to overstate what a massive film this was. Violent action movies like this with the fast edits and the pumped up sound really got started in the 80s. Before Miami Vice, most movie shootouts (other than war movies) had guys with handguns and maybe shotguns. Cops often had .38 revolvers. But this movie went over the top. You just didn't see a whole precinct of cops get wasted with high powered weapons like that. I had to sneak into the movie theater to go see it on the big screen. Pretty much wore out our VHS copy of it, along with Scarface and Aliens. (Speaking of Aliens, you need to see that if you are a Cameron fan. Best movie he ever made.)
Reese came across time for her, fully knowing he was going to die anyway.
Now that's love.
In the early 80's Arnold was famous for weight lifting and playing Conan the Barbarian, but he wasn't top tier A list yet. That's why he would take a low budget villain role with few speaking lines. As luck would have it, this role would become his most famous when Terminator 2 hit theaters.
Unless you refer to everything that you see with your eyes, as "graphics", there are no "graphics" in these special effects. As a matter of fact, Terminator 2 was one of the very first major motion pictures, to incorporate CGI, in their special effects. But that was roughly 7 years after this.
Another name that later went on to other famous shows is Gale Hurd (a producer I think) who is a main wheel in The Walking Dead.
2:43 Thats me everytime I see him somewhere.
Lovely reaction :)
James Cameron is amazing with his Writing and Directing. He makes some of the BEST Sci-Fi films
Like T2, his newer movies including Titanic are just way ahead of their time.
I can't wait to see your Terminator binge reaction especially 2 Judgement Day which is Soo iconic
Another classic, amazing video
When the T-800 removes its damaged eyeball, that's actually a rubber puppet made by Stan Winston (a legendary visual effects artist who passed away in 2008, this movie was also his big break; he also made the Predator head for the Predator) since they obviously couldn't have Arnold scalpeling his own eye.
The puppet's actually still around, but it looks like a mummified corpse nowadays due to rubber decay.
Two small details that you can notice is that the T-800's eyebrows burn off when it jumps through the fire at the start of the chase out of the club (this is why it starts wearing sunglasses, to hide that it no longer has eyebrows), another is that Arnold's given paler make-up in scenes after the assault on the police station. It's also why the motel owner asks about the smell and flies are crawling all of the T-800's face: The T-800's organic surface layer has died from the damage it has sustained and is rotting.
EDIT: Also the time paradox involves more than just John Connor and the picture. Remember what Reese called the unit model of the Terminator? Cyberdyne Systems Model 101. It isn't included in the final cut, but there's a deleted scene in the morning when Sarah is being taken to the ambulance, where the factory's owners go about recovering the pieces of the T-800 and looking at a computer chip and wondering if it's from Japan. The deleted scene ends with a pan up to reveal the company's name: Cyberdyne Systems. Skynet also exists because the T-800 was sent back in time.
These were what they call practical effects, which is why he appeared real, and other times robotic. Also still using stop motion. No CGI in this one.
This and Conan the Barbarian helped launch Arnold Schwarzenegger's film career. More of his movies to watch are Commando, The Running Man, Twins, Red Heat, Total Recall, Kindergarten Cop, Terminator 2, Last Action Hero, True Lies, Eraser and the bodybuilding docudrama Pumping Iron
No question he's my favorite action star
I remember being 13 and me and my amigo got this on pirate video and watched this on the stealth haha. Love and peace you two.
Arnold has classics like : The Running Man ( story by Stephen King ) - Total Recall - Conan The Barbarian - Conan The Destroyer. The begining of the movie where he walks towards those 3 guys asking for their clothes , was filmed at the Griffith observatory up in the Hollywood hills 🔭. And the gun store , was right next to the movie studios .
I love watching young people watch old movies and comment on the style, tech, etc. Its so entertaining to me
38 is NOT old.
Reese, looking at her picture, always wondered, he said, what she was thinking at that moment. We know from the closing scene of the film that she was talking about him.
I saw T2 in theaters with my dad and brother, its is one of the best sequels if not the best I ever seen
At the beginning, of the film Reese tells Sarah that the Terminator is a "Cyberdyne Systems Model 101". At the end, the sign outside factory that they hide in and squash the terminaator says "Cyberdyne Systems"

Fun fact, in the novel i believe when reese gets to the past he goes thru the garbage finds a pizza. His 1st time ever having it and is ecstatic, sees a dog offers it a piece 1st bc of the bond dogs and humans would have in the future and how they were detrimental to susing out terminators.
This is one of my all time favorite movies

Back then here in France the movie was R-13 but the self-surgery scene was all over the news at noon 😆 (along with other spoilers because they wanted to speak about the groundbreaking special effects, same with T2).
Kyle always wondered what she was thinking about at that moment when the picture was taken. She was thinking about him but he never knew it.
Gotta watch T2 ...to this day still one of the best sci/fi action films of all time.
Terminator 2 is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, and one of my favorite movies of all time. Looking forward to you guys' reaction to that one.
Another hidden gem of a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger that surprisingly highlights his subtle acting chops is the zombie film "Maggie" that should've gotten him an Oscar nomination.

great movie + reaction! *definitely* watch the sequel, (imho) still one of the greatest action movies of all time👍
Imagine if the John Connor that Reese and Sarah conceive wasn't the real John Connor that sent Reese back. Sarah goes on to raise Reese's baby and names it John and never meets John's real father because her future was changed. She raises John to be a military leader but this alternate Reese baby John has shin splints or IBS or something and ultimately gets him wiped out in battle because the real John Connor's dad was actually like John Elway or something and genetically superior which was the cornerstone to the real John Connor's success? Time travel is fck'd.
There were a few things on a did you know channel That in the phone book when terminator comes across Sarah Conner The name John Conner are on the other page although John Conner wasn’t born yet.
This series is one of the few where the sequel is considered by many to be better than the original. I would recommend watching the second one.
Glad to see one of you keeping a countdown on the cops remaining in the building, just like we did back in '84.
Actually, Kyle Reese would probably know how to work an old-fashioned lock. Vehicles used by the Human Resistance in the future would have to be low-tech (no computer chips), so they'd be older vehicles.
In fact, in the flashbacks we see in the movie, they're using older model vehicles on the battlefield.
The nuclear blast happened in 1997 when cars were still low tech.
great reaction guys, prob the best terminator reaction ive seen (and believe me ive seen a few) thanks
What I love about y’all’s reactions is that your facial expressions during the movies you watch are so expressive, but your commentary is so low key. You can’t hide your real emotions. We see you.
Anyway, I agree with everyone else: Terminator 2 is one of the best sequels ever made, is arguably better than the first, and is still considered one of the best American action movies of all time. Do NOT look up anything about it, not even a blurb you’d get on the DVD or online rental. Those things will spoil the movie right up front. Those of us who saw it in theaters had the plot ruined for us by trailers. We want to spare you that pain.
Sarah a legend to just as much as John. think about it, with a BIG assist to Kyle, Sarah actually becomes the first person in history to kill a terminator in this movie.
Now you see Terminator 2. One of the best sequels out there
