20:30 The Terminator's eyebrows were burnt off from when Reese blew up the car in the alley. It also singed his haircut. He had a longer side part style when he first arrived, into a real rough and shaggy looking buzz cut in front and on the sides. I love this movie. I couldn't even guess how many times I've seen this and Kyle Reese is one of my favorite heroes from any movie. It's worth considering, beyond just being 1984, that this was made with a budget of 6.4 million which is around 19 million today. In movie terms that is a microscopic budget. Some of the effects might not have the same punch today, but the fact they were able to do so much with so little is beyond impressive. That's real movie magic imo.

I've seen a ton of reaction videos to this film and for virtually every question reactors ask there's almost immediately an answer that was covered in the movie. That's how meticulous and flawless this film is. Cameron really paid attention to every detail when he made this masterpiece.

If you liked 'The Terminator' I really think you would love 'T2'. The highly anticipated sequel was released seven years after the first movie. Thanks to the success of the first movie, the sequel had a bigger budget mostly going toward CGI. In the end, 'T2' was a blockbuster hit at the box office collecting over $520 million. You'd thought the first Terminator was ahead of it's time, wait until you see the sequel as it was ahead of its time being released in the early 90s

Kyle Reese is Michael Biehn's own favorite character of all he's played. "M.C. Biehn" (his middle name's "Connell") started his acting career in the '70s, and was kind of like the James Dean of the '80s. Coolness factor off the chart! After watching this movie, it seems kinda weird that he's played more villains than Arnie. He'd played at least two villains before becoming the ultimate hero, Kyle Reese.
He studied the Warsaw Ghetto resistance fighters to get a feel for how Reese should move, think, and act.
    17:54 "Couldn't" care less.
18:04 Shotgun wounds. Medical examiners differentiate between "gunshot" wound and "shotgun" wound, partially due to the severity of shotgun wounds. They're more horrific than most wounds caused by projectiles.
25:57 It'll stop 12-gauge shot pellets from penetrating (not sure about slugs since they can bust the engine block of a Mack truck), but that's still a massive amount of kinetic energy. There'll still be physical trauma on a normal human. Potentially broken bones, internal bruising, contusions, all that sort of thing.
30:16 The fact that Terminators can strategize like that only makes them more terrifying.

Terminator 2 is widely regarded as one of the best action films ever made, so you're in for a treat especially the "Extended Edition". However, it's best to avoid every other darn Terminator movie after T2 since they're pretty bad. If you ended up liking the themes and subtext of T2 however, the TV show, "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" from 2008 is unbelievably good, dramatic and underrated. "I'll be back."
I highly recommend watching the extended version of Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) with the definitive ending. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that version and adds context that was originally taken out, anyone that says otherwise is pushing an agenda.
Fun Fact: The crew had "You can't scare me, I work for James Cameron." t-shirts made.
Casting Notes Fact: O.J. Simpson was considered for the Terminator, but the producers feared he was "too nice" to be taken seriously as a cold-blooded killer. Ironic.
Director Cameo Fact: Near the beginning of the movie, when Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) receives a message on her answering machine breaking her date, the voice on the machine is James Cameron's.
Make-Up Shenanigans Fact: One afternoon during a break in filming, Arnold Schwarzenegger went into a restaurant in downtown L.A. to get some lunch and realized all too late that he was still in Terminator make-up with a missing eye, exposed jawbone and burned flesh.
Gun Enthusiast Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger worked with guns every day for a month to prepare for the role. The first two weeks of filming he practiced weapons stripping and reassembly blindfolded until the motions were automatic, like a machine. He spent hours at the shooting range and practicing with different weapons without blinking or looking at them when reloading or cocking. He also had to be ambidextrous. He practiced different moves up to 50 times. He wound up garnering a compliment in Soldier Of Fortune magazine for his realistic handling of the guns on camera (whereas the magazine usually lampoons movies for their inaccurate depictions of weapons use).

An important piece of context is that this was a low budget, exploitation film, that was so much better than anyone expected, that it launched James Cameron's career. By the time he would do the sequel, the budget was ten times as large. What is impressive is what was achieved, for so little money. If it's not always completely convincing, that's to be expected. Every shot was as good as they could afford. Many filmmakers have achieved less by spending much more.

  • @UnderDriven17

The effects quality was primarily due to the budget, not the year it was made. This was Cameron's second film and the budget was only $6.4 million. If he had more money the effects would have been better. I often wonder if Cameron has considered fixing the shots with the animatronic Arnold head. It would be relatively simple to do it now. I think it would be nice to have an updated version for posterity. However, having first seen the film in the 1980's I don't mind the animatronics much--I would replace those shots just because it could be done better now, but it doesn't affect the quality of the film for me (this is one of my favorite sci-fi movies). It's interesting how modern viewers who are accustomed to more sophisticated effects react negatively to those scenes. I get that it looks 'cheesy' but it doesn't affect the story. In general, I think you did a good job with this review and the editing.

'The Terminator' is widely known as the blockbuster that launched the movie career of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was a major competitive bodybuilder from Austria... Originally, he was cast to play the hero soldier... but after reading the script, he asked to play the 'Terminator'... Actor Lance Henriksen was cast as the original 'Terminator' - he was recast as Detective Vukovich... but Henrikson did play the android 'Bishop' in the sci-fi movie 'Aliens' after 'Terminator'.
Schwarzenegger went on to more action roles in 'Commando' ... 'Predator' ... 'Total Recall' ... 'Conan the Barbarian'... but also won praise in comedy movies like - 'Twins' ... 'Kindergarten Cop'... 👍
He reprised his role in 'Terminator II: Judgement Day'... the sequel that out-did the original and subsequent 'Terminator' movies.
'The Terminator' also launched the career of director James Cameron, who did the 'Terminator II' sequel movie... and became one of the most successful movie directors, making blockbusters like 'Titanic'... 'Avatar'... 'True Lies'... 'Aliens' ... 'The Abyss'... etc.
His then-wife Gale Anne Hurd who worked on 'The Terminator'... also had success behind the scenes, including 'The Walking Dead' series.

Fun fact... the cop that gets slammed and knocked out by Arnold is a cameraman that filled in as an extra. He makes another appearance in T2 as the mall shopper who takes multiple pics of Arnold after smashing through a store window. Fun fact 2... Arnold's real personal assistant (tall dirty blonde) fills in T2 as the lady looking at Sarah through the window after Dr Silverman explains the pen stabbing knee story.
Fun fact 3 in T2... Linda Hamiltons real twin sister (a school teacher) plays Sarah's image in the mirror when Sarah is digging bullets out. She mimicks exactly what Sarah is doing to create the mirror image. There is no mirror, just a frame, to get the shot w/o seeing the camera if there was a real mirror.

In case you're wondering, it was the breakthrough movie for the director. Nowadays you may know him as director for the Avatar movies. His movies generally become record-selling blockbusters regardless what he directs. Other notable works from him are Titanic (Romance/Drama), True Lies (Action/Comedy) and Aliens (Sci-fi/Horror), which is considered one of the best sequels ever made next to Terminator 2 (which he also directed).
    *80s*
It looks good for the 80s, indeed. In the 80s they didn't have CG, so most of their effects are actually _real_ props. Animatronics, puppetry were the tools they used back then, but if they were done well they still hold up in time. The stop-motion effect didn't age that well though, nor did the dummy face in the mirror, but I suspect it was because this was a relatively modest budget movie (only $6.4 million). The face became more realistic later on though.
    *Sequel*
He intentionally didn't want to make sequel until the techniques were better. The result is that the sequel looks a thousand times better than the first movie and more surprisingly, those CG effects he used in the sequel still hold up very well compared to movies from the current date. And if this movie almost makes you cry, the next one will topple you.
    *World*
Well, the idea behind the movie was Artificial Intelligence. That was a pretty sci-fi idea back then, but if you look at our current time we have plenty of 'intelligent machines' all around us. Smart TVs, smart fridges, smartphones and smart cars. Siri and Alexa are AIs many people actively use and there have been talks about using AI in our military as well. That's why (at least in Europe) we're trying to make laws that automated drones are not allowed to kill people. The irony? The current technology is on a level that the movie Terminator becomes realistic enough that we should prevent that future by disallowing AI to rule our military.

It was a very different experience for people when this was new. The brutality of the Terminator was unprecedented in a well made film and the tension of the unrelenting chase was extreme. It's got a carefully detailed plot, with an excellent script. I personally value the artistic style of it over the effects, but the effects were overall impressive for the time, regardless of the budget. The behaviour of the three main characters is spot on throughout, well acted and directed. This type of movie hadn't really existed before, where a sci-fi action thriller was treated with such finesse across the board. Fun fact, Arnold Schwarzenegger did ballet training and treated posing for bodybuilding contests as a fine art. His movements in the film, as directed by Cameron, are carefully selected to be efficient but fluid, minimising wasted motion while maintaining a human-like facade. Until then robots did the robot, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's ballet training transformed how robot roles were written and acted.

Did you know the phone number that Sarah gave to her "mom" on the phone? If she's calling from somewhere near L.A. yet gave out a 408 area code, which at the time was pretty much San Jose and Sunnyvale.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is REALLY, REALLY good at playing a mechanical serial killer, especially doing it completely deadpan. Funniest line in this movie to me is when The Terminator scrolls through his list of responses when the landlord asks about the bad odor coming from the room and he chooses to say "Fuck you, asshole."

Terminator 2 Judgment Day is a must it is without a doubt one of the greatest sequels ever made. It’s much more action packed the story is much more emotionally engaging and there’s even a greater threat and much more at stake.

Part of the reason Schwarzenegger’s face looked off in the mirror scene is that the skin was dying. The idea was that the biological side of him was decaying - which is why he smelled like a dead cat later - whereas the machine part continued.
That said, I definitely appreciate your honest expression of your opinion - that is, that you did not “LOVE” the movie. Love” everything they see, because they know that their viewership, for any given video will mostly consist of people who did like the movie.

1930s - *The Wizard of Oz* (1939). You may have already seen this, so if you have, then react to, Gone With The Wind, also from 1939.
1940s - *Casablanca* (1942). Considered one of the best films of all-time.
      1950s - *Rear Window* (1954) - Arguably director Alfred Hitchcock's best movie.
1960s - *Breakfast at Tiffany's* (1961). Starring the incomparable Audrey Hepburn.
1970s - *Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope* (1977). Even though it's called Episode IV, it was the first to come out, and should always be the first one watched!
      1980s - *E.T. The Extra-terrestrial* (1982). A 7-year old Drew Barrymore steals the show!
1990s - *The Shawshank Redemption* (1994). I never met anyone who didn't love this movie.
2000s - *Gladiator* (2000). The greatest film of the 21st century.
      2010s - *Ex Machina* (2014). A film you'll never forget.

  • @Thylonicus

The things that really keep this movie from being as great as it could have been isn't the era, but the money and time. Specifically, the lack of them.
The puppet of Arnold's head looked bad even for the time, but that was because director James Cameron just had no money. If you watch the sequel, you'll see what he did not much later but with a much larger budget and more time.
The stop-motion at the end is bad because the stop-motion team didn't get the Terminator skeleton puppet when they should have, so they could take measurements for their model. They had less than a third of the time they should have had to make those bits.
I don't think the critiques are invalid, but I do think context helps. The poorer quality is not indicative of the era, the director, or the special effects teams, but were victims of a barely-existent budget and a too-short time frame.

3.We have limited AI now. So does China.😱😱
    4. If this wasn't a movie the ammunition would not have been available on the gun shop counter.

With the special effects, it's more than just being made in 1984, this movie was extremely low budget. It was made for $6.5 million. They didnt have permits, they filmed guerrilla style, setting up a camera on location, filming quickly and then leaving. Arnold himself thought they had a good movie, but didn’t think it would be popular. Too niche of a film. The movie ended up exploding in popularity, and though Arnold was famous for Conan, Terminator took it to another level.
James Cameron actually gets a good budget for the second film, and yet it feels like a cohesive universe with the two movies. The second is a must watch.

James Cameron wasn't given the proper budget for this fil and he also had to shoot some scenes illegally w/o permits. After watching "The Terminator", you need to watch "Terminator 2" (Judgement Day), then you need to watch "Alien" (1979) & "Aliens" (1986). Few cast in "The Terminator" like Bill Paxton (Punk Leader), Michael Biehn (Kyle Reese), and Lance Henrikson (Detective Hal Vukovich) cast in Aliens (1986). You will be immersed in watching the movies.
•Detroit Become Human, It is similar in a way to "The Terminator" T-800 Cyberdyne System model 101 series cyborg. Technology has evolved to a point where human like androids are everywhere. They speak, move ,and behave like human beings, but they are only machines serving humans. Play three distinct androids and see a world at the brink of chaos - perhaps our future - through their eyes.
