I understand the logic behind Subaru only having an internal filter on the CVTs. There isn't as much friction material like we see with the EATs, so changing the fluid on time should be the only service you need to perform.
But there is just something about changing a filter that puts your mind at ease.

I usually get a transmission fluid change every second yearly roadworthy inspection.
He doesn't drop the pan, just drains out whatever is going to come out of the drain plug, and changes the spin on filter.
Only issue I can see with this is that the magnet in the pan does not get cleaned.

Apparently the SVX originally shipped with an internal filter but after several clogged filter-related transaxle failures, unofficially attributed to customer maintenance neglect (especially in the American market), they opted to remove and replace it with a simple strainer to prevent the problem in the future. Interesting that they moved to an external filter on some later AT models which, judging by one of your other videos, once again causes transaxle failures from customers neglecting to change them. Follow your maintenance schedules, people!

$25 a gallon OEM is the current rate, doing a flushed would easily double or more? So guess the only reason why I would pull it and clean it is to actually removed the gunk that sticks and usually requires some elbow grease. I pulled plenty of pans and have dealt with that gunk. Idk if it’s worth the trouble to removed but might do it down the line just feel so weird that the only real filter requires to removed the transmission and the dealer tells you the fluid is for life. You should drop this link on your CVT video

  • @tthrasher34

Technically speaking a filter is a really good strainer.... while a strainer does perform a similar function as a filter, it's just s really crappy filter, but it does filter none the less. But I do agree with you that the object in question is NOT considered a filter, but it does act like one on a sense. So it is like a filter just not a filter. Good day Sir..... oh I love your videos

Asked Subaru for filter part # they gave me Subaru transmission Strainer part # 31728AA130 (supersedes 31728AA091). THIS IS NOT A FILTER. IT CONTAINS NO Filter medium, only wire mesh. This is not the one shown in your video, but it also is just a strainer. It's totally off topic from this channel, but I'm adding a spin on filter to my Ford E350 chassis C6 transmission since it's getting a rebuild. Stock, it had no magnet in the pan and only a screen "filter". Maybe it's overkill but for about $50, I figure it's worth it. A $4 Motorcraft oil filter will fit the filter head so it's stupidly cheap to replace the filter annually. I do my own oil changes so there won't ever be any confusion as to why there's a tiny car oil filter under my 6.9L diesel. The transmission has lots of internal damage from age and probably the lack of filtering.
