As a girl's high school coach, I'm rarely able to find videos that I can use. Not having the speed/power or revs, it's difficult to translate a Pro tip video for the girls. This is a pretty good exercise to get a feel for the release. When I was coached I practiced one step, two steps, three steps and then finally four steps. It also helps you learn about the momentum/pendulum swing, because the initial height and push off helps you learn about swing speed. I think I was originally taught one or two step in order to help me with my timing and drift more than anything... I was releasing the ball to early and drifting with 10 boards to the left while I walked, which I corrected. He might be a useful exercise to take video of the girls and watch the one step because it really should mimic your last step in the approach, so it does have more utility besides the cupping and release of the ball.
@@swickard1 JR Raymond recently did a series of videos where he discusses the power differences between men and women. One interesting thing he mentions is that a lot of the better women bowlers throw their ball-side shoulder forward. It doesn't allow them to stay under the ball. Hopefully that's helpful for you.

I grew up throwing rubber and my most consistent release was with my hand on the outside of the ball. As bowling balls changed to plastic, urethane, and reactive, I have had to change my release, as well. I have recently been fighting a tendency to yank the ball left and, after watching this video, I believe it's because I've reverted to my oldest release which is totally inappropriate for today's equipment. Now, the ball is "dead" (won't hook) and the change in release is something that doesn;t work for me. I've tried. When I first bought the reactive ball it would hook no matter what I did. Great drills. If I try to ramp up speed (and or revs) I tend to out speed my revs and miss at the 3 pin. So control is a factor in my game.. and feeling the hand roll it, with it finishing on the left side of my head.

It has been a few months since bowling centers in Delaware opened and already 4 weeks of Sunday night mixed league, and I'm still struggling with hooking the ball. According to things my dad has told me (he's been bowling so many years and knows more than I do), he notices that I am still 'spinning' the ball. If there is ever an opportunity for me to have an in-person coaching session with Brad and Kyle, I would not turn it down. I want to get better despite all the frustrations I have been going through the past few weeks. On the plus side, my average finally went up last week by 7 pins, so that's a small step in the right direction.
Very difficult learning process especially without proper coaching. But when the Bulb eventually comes on the feeling of the release and watching the ball actually roll down the lane correctly feels great. You will be like OH, that’s what I’m supposed to be doing. But they are right it takes a while to grasp the concept because it’s uniquely different. You almost have to snap the ball from your hand to clear the thumb right away. Then apply twist, torque, or rotation before your fingers leave the ball. All while stepping, swinging, aiming, and releasing the ball. There’s quite a lot of necessary steps to execute properly before chucking it down the lane. But it’s fun when you finally figure it out like every thing else. It just mechanics, mathematics, algebra, momentum, energy, transverse and linear targeting, perception, processing and coordination.
Was bowling last week. Young lady in the second lane over (distancing rules) was obviously an amateur, but had a beautiful right hook, from a right-handed bowler.
I’m trying to move from playing thumb-out all these years to thumb-in. I’m doing a lot of these drills you guys are showing and it’s feeling really good. My speed is up, but my revs are way down. Brad and Kyle is a little tip for you are you a small hydraulic jack put some filled on the bottom keep it from scratching the wood and a little piece of cloth on the top and you can sit the ball any height you want when you're trying to do it instead of holding the weight
I am about to purchase a new ball and prepare for the upcoming league season. I am very excited. It has been awhile but I am trying to learn a better way to roll the ball. I used to two finger the ball and I got great results however I'm not very consistent. I am going to attempt to start using all the finger holes and releasing just like this.
I've learned to hook the ball by watching your vids. I feel I'm ready to buy my first bowling ball. Do you have any suggestions on what to buy for a first ball?
Without mentioning any companys, I think you should get a reactive pearl or hybrid. Since you're just learning how to curve the ball you want to be able to control it more so you can learn to trust it. With a pearl ball you can usually throw it down the second arrow(or 10th board) while standing on the middle dot. Then you can adjust from there, moving left if it's hooking too much or right if it's not hooking enough.
@@ChrisJFGray Thanks heaps for the advice. Will research more on what's the difference between reactive Pearls and Hybrids, and see what fits my style as a starter.
@@jobal7365 for sure. Ask bowlers around you for their opinions since they can see you bowl. They'll be able to give you the best advice. Or even better. If you have a proshop in your center ask the ball guy to watch you bowl a couple games and hell be able to help you out.
Told my partner I think I'm ready to buy my first ball and she bought me a 14lb Storm Phaze 3. I was thinking more of the entry level pearl variety, but she wanted high performance 😆. Got it drilled, but nowhere to use it except at home using the couch.
Can you guys make a video helping people who are transitioning into bowling 2 handed, I'm doing decent but I'm struggling to get my speed up, maybe even have belmo help
Great video. I been out of bowling for over 8 years and have been struggling with consistent throws and getting the ball to react well. You have anything to help with bad throws? Such as constantly missing marks or pulling left? Part of it may just be the lack of muscle memory.
I am a League Bowler I have hit 269 as my highest score. I have a zone still and I use my plastic ball as a spare ball. I always have my hand behind the ball and it close to my body. I have better control doing that.
I'm not the one who you asked but I think in the long run it's better to develop your own strength. There are also two other factors, the PBA ban on wrist devices and the fact that the modern ball release doesn't quite work when the wrist is firmly locked. Unless you suffer from injury don't fall for this. Even weaker players can do it, it's just a matter of getting used to it. Also consider that the ball would have to be drilled specifically for this purpose.
That would be me. I found a tight fit takes the squeeze out of my grip and makes it easier to control. Ball just hangs from my hand when it is at my side. This has improved my rev rate and overall control.
@@mikeb2777 I've tried this with a ball I just had drilled. Couldn't get the ball off my hand. That in turn has seem to cause some swelling in my thumb. It's had a ripple effect throughout my arsenal. I think I'm doomed. Lol. I just had to open up all the thumb holes in my bag.
Can yall explain how tucking your pinky effects the different kind of roll it will put on the ball? Also maybe go through why it looks like Kyle crosses his body when he releases...I have always been told that is a bad habit. Keep up the good work yall!!
There's a video that Randy did with Kris prather that explains the tucking the pinki better. But to sum it up it can give you a few more revs to make the ball go through the pins better when you start to get left is what Kris says in that video. But the new Kegal way to follow through is finish your arm swing in front of your face even tho we were all tought to do the shaking someone's hand.
@@joshuahubbard3562 maybe that's what I am doing wrong I could throw a perfect ball dead in the pocket (I'm right handed) and leave a 7-10 split. We have the crappy twister pins...I've also had to slow down 2mph to get the ball to react and carry.
Ha, just noticed the Let's Go Blues! sign behind you. We were St. Louis Blues season tickets holders for a decade. I'm watching this because we are about to go bowling here in Boise, ID. Then I have elite hockey league later.
Can someone please explain this to me? When you are releasing the ball, are you spinning the ball like a handshake with the thumb pointing upwards at the end of the swing to create a curve? Or are you just letting it roll off your hands? If that's the case, how does the ball curve?
Man, my approach and release are absolute crap after 12 years... I want to compete someday, so I have A LOT of work to do... All that to say: I love watching that slide and smooth release, especially in slow-mo! It’s relaxing.
Thanks guys from a bowler who has been knowingly in that wrong release position forever . So, the process to correct is to do the no step, one step, three step progression ? Thank you
You can do the no step drill all you want but if you don't have good balance and you can't get the ball by your ankle, you will always have trash ball roll and/or chicken wing it
The title of the video is confusing. It says how to hook the ball better, but the video emphasizes on keeping your hand on the inside. You have to emphasize that keeping your hand on the inside will of course have your hand go up the back and cause you to throw a straighter ball. What you really want is to transition from the inside of the ball to the outside of the ball so you can add the curve as you swing. Keeping the hand on the inside at the beginning gives you the options to change the amount you go outside as you swing. As opposed to if your hand began on the outside and tried to bring it inside. The more you go outside the more axis rotation you're giving your ball, giving it more curve down the lane. My question is, wouldn't having the position of your hand around the ball set as you throw it reduce the chance of an error occuring during the phase where you transition from inside to behind to outside? Like if you went and twisted a little too much and went too far outside or if you went too little. For example if you went from 1 o'clock inside, swung and went to 11 o'clock wouldn't starting at 11 o'clock prevent you from accidentally over twisting and stopping at 10 o'clock instead of 11? Is there a benefit to swinging through 1 o'clock and then transitioning through 12, and 11 to get to 10 or just starting at 10 o'clock from the beginning of the swing adding the 10 o'clock amount of curve you wanted?
If I'm going to come up straight up the back of the ball, why shouldn't I just preset my hand position before I start my approach and just keep it in that position throughout the entire approach?
should not matter what ball you use since you are just focused on getting your hand on the inside of that ball my friend don’t worry about what the end result is at the pins

What pound balls do you guys use? I'm considering going down a pound, what do you recommend when someone is considering that as an option?
Thank you for this video. Working on fixing this
50 years old. Been throwing a straight ball my entire life. Time to do it correctly!!
The 7 arrows drill, struck from 5 so far working on angular issues right now so soon it will be all 7
Can you guys make a video helping people who are transitioning into bowling 2 handed, I'm doing decent but I'm struggling to get my speed up, maybe even have belmo help
M Guest speaker: Packy
nice work guys!
Kyle was “blasting” his quads.😄😂😄😂😄😄😂
I'm a one handed, no thumb bowler like Tom Dougherty. I'd like to see more videos about setting and release without a thumb
eileen's bowling buddy rev trainer will allow you to practice at home where you develop a much better feel and consistancy.............
Jeff, sounds like u purchased the rev trainer. Do you have any of other products? Was looking to purchase one or more of their products.
Link to the seven arrow drill? Didn’t see it. Great job on the videos.
Love your work! You have both helped me so much!!!! Thanks
Great video. Two thumbs up
Great video.
Hey guys, thanks for all you do.
What's your feelings on wrist braces?
I'm not the one who you asked but I think in the long run it's better to develop your own strength. There are also two other factors, the PBA ban on wrist devices and the fact that the modern ball release doesn't quite work when the wrist is firmly locked. Unless you suffer from injury don't fall for this. Even weaker players can do it, it's just a matter of getting used to it. Also consider that the ball would have to be drilled specifically for this purpose.
this video is exactly what i needed! Thanks guys
Excelente explicacion, gracias.
I paused the video and went shopping and out for dinner. Kyle was in that position four hours. LoL
Kyle .. how do you like the pin down layout? Your main layout?
nicely explained & broken down guys!
new to bowling and this video seems very helpful!
Does this drill apply to someone who bowls like Daughtery?
do you have any recommendations for a senior bowler that has joint discomfort?
That would be me. I found a tight fit takes the squeeze out of my grip and makes it easier to control. Ball just hangs from my hand when it is at my side. This has improved my rev rate and overall control.
@@mikeb2777 I've tried this with a ball I just had drilled. Couldn't get the ball off my hand. That in turn has seem to cause some swelling in my thumb. It's had a ripple effect throughout my arsenal. I think I'm doomed. Lol. I just had to open up all the thumb holes in my bag.
You guys rock!!! Keep up the great content :)
@@450sxkoupe and just a caution, if you do start to tuck your pinki, it might tear, cuz I tucked mine and it tore mine and scanned over a bit
@@joshuahubbard3562 I tuck mine every now and again to get more movement/carry from the pins, that's what I've always been told it does...
Ha, just noticed the Let's Go Blues! sign behind you. We were St. Louis Blues season tickets holders for a decade. I'm watching this because we are about to go bowling here in Boise, ID. Then I have elite hockey league later.
Great lesson. Thanks!
Hey guys! Love the channel 🤘I'm a newer bowler and a big fan of yours. Thanks for the tips.
Anyone have any ideas for a better release for someone who has a double jointed thumb?
Can someone please explain this to me? When you are releasing the ball, are you spinning the ball like a handshake with the thumb pointing upwards at the end of the swing to create a curve? Or are you just letting it roll off your hands? If that's the case, how does the ball curve?
Man, my approach and release are absolute crap after 12 years... I want to compete someday, so I have A LOT of work to do...
All that to say: I love watching that slide and smooth release, especially in slow-mo! It’s relaxing.
I'm coming back to these videos because I have developed negative axis tilt and I have no clue where I bought that from
Thanks guys from a bowler who has been knowingly in that wrong release position forever . So, the process to correct is to do the no step, one step, three step progression ?
Thank you
Can you bring on a two hander to give some tips for those of us who are two handed! Love the videos though thanks for making them
You can do the no step drill all you want but if you don't have good balance and you can't get the ball by your ankle, you will always have trash ball roll and/or chicken wing it
The title of the video is confusing.
Bowling is done sooo much differently now than the way my dad taught me back in the late 60s-early 70s.
Thanks for this helpful video guys!
I see a Blues sign!! Let’s Go Blues!!
If I'm going to come up straight up the back of the ball, why shouldn't I just preset my hand position before I start my approach and just keep it in that position throughout the entire approach?
Well, if I had to guess, I’d say to generate a stronger forward roll upon release.
Thanks guy that was awesome drill!!!!
thanks, brad & kyle, I do struggle also on the release. I keep learning, I've got a question, can i used my plastic ball for the drill?
should not matter what ball you use since you are just focused on getting your hand on the inside of that ball my friend don’t worry about what the end result is at the pins
I was about to comment on it and then they talked about it at 1:30. Haha!
We do the no step and one step drills everyday at practice
Great video. Thanks.
