I remember coming home one night after bombing an exam the week before my final. I was stressing out because I was going into my final with a failing grade. Any how, that night I binge watched every one of your study tips videos and I swear they helped me pass my final and every test thereafter. Now here I am a Nurse ready to start my new position at the hospital tomorrow! Gonna definitely apply this videos tips to my new career. Thank you my brotha! You are much appreciated! 😁🤙🏽

    I was actually struggling with this for a long time and here is my solution to the problem: I have a list of things I have or want to do daily (often), weekly, monthly or infrequently. And every evening I plan 3 - 6 of these activities for the next day. The planning takes 2 minutes, I do it on my phone before sleep. Also, I have rated each activity as Cognitively, Physically or Socially exhausting and I try not to have more than 2 of the same type for the next day. This system works for me well. I use it to plan my free time (or rather not-job time).
    Recently I also added routines. E.g. whenever I am leaving my computer, I bring the place to its original state (basically clean the place), or morning/evening routine. These help me build some automatisms in my life and sort of works like your ifs - if I do this, then I do that, then I do that, than the routine is done...

    Thank you. It's not that I wasn't disciplined, but more that I wasn't brought up with healthy routines. Now that I'm 23, I have a difficult time knowing what to do when I wake up at 5am. I don't have the fundamental habits to get momentum going. Thank you, again. I needed this.

      This is kind of embarrassing of me but I have very unhealthy habits and things I'm not willing to do because of laziness and I'm 14. I was brought up in a less then happy household and never learned basic things. So, now, who I'm living with is shaming me for not showering regurally and forgetting to brush my teeth, etc. Simple things like that, eating habits, other hygiene stuff, etc. It is so embarrasing but I'm working on it and it's hard because I wasn't brought up (even though I'm still a kid) to do these things. I just felt like sharing this with someone else that has or had similar issues.

      Alina Titov I hear you. I’m quite older now but I had to go through a few phases of newfound motivation. For me it was unfortunately things like loss of a loved one (times two) and subsequent phases wearing black everyday for years. And that created a sort of a new / old goth mystique that, along with falling in love and having a good job @ a French restaurant, I was motivated towards healthy self-care. I wish you all the best, early bad starts sux, I know. Take good care of yourself.

      I'd suggest resolving to do only one push-up every time, say, for a week. Perhaps up the number of triggers, not push-ups per se. It'll feel ridiculous, but it's super easy to do BEFORE you fall asleep on the ground. And when you eventually increase the number, don't go straight to 50, as that'll bring you back to square one, in terms of mental resistance. Just do tiny gradual increases.
      I realized that the "all-or-nothing" mentality was a driving factor in my procrastination problem when I would look back at a wasted day *coughweekcough* and realize that, if I had spent only a small ridiculous amount of time per day I would STILL have been in a better position moving forward. Yet my perfectionism/pride was stopping me from doing these "too small" and "meaningless" efforts that would have opened the door for further improvement down the line, because I had this stupid notion that I HAD to do productive work in 4 hour blocks at a time, and without any gradual build-up. Just a personal observation.

    Actually that quote is Will Durant’s words in a discussion of Aristotle.
    “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation: we not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather have these because we have acted rightly; these virtues are formed in man by doing his actions; we are we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”

    This is good advice! It's important to find methods that work for you to encourage your good habits. The If-Then technique is a great idea; for me I think about how I want to be able to describe myself to others. Am I the type of person who goes to the gym? Well I have only been once this week, so not really, I should go today instead of watching another episode. Recently I'll want to quit early, like stopping at 7.5 of my 10k but I'll remember, I've been telling people I do a 10k every other day, if you quit now you'll make a liar of yourself. And so I push through.
    But whatever works for you! Just remember, no matter how slow you're going, you're still going faster than the guy who's sitting on the couch.

    Thomas, you inspired me to buy a pull-up bar for my room today. I always thought, my door frame is too weak, can't do it. But I gave it a second thought. Bought the thing. It's solid. Thank you for the suggestion. Will be doing pull-ups daily, no doubt.

    One huge thing here is to actually commit to doing the thing. One of my biggest problems with laziness is that the thing that I 'ought' to be doing is something that I'm totally uncommitted to be doing on a psychological level. I am basically caught between not at all being passionate about this career path, and on the other hand not at all wanting to face any alternative path in life either (since I can't imagine being even interested in anything ells).
    So I'm basically stuck between somewhat interested and utter disinterest. How to then commit to doing the things that I need to do for the career path that I'm only moderatly interested in?

And I apologize if I spelled Matt‘s last name wrong, but this video has really gave me some insight on how to be more productive when it comes to not just working on my RUclips channel but growing as an individual as well. It all boils down to having real genuine and honest self discipline and ability to be accountable when you make mistakes. Great video Thomas appreciate it!

    You're supposed to be doing what you are supposed to do but you're on RUclips or on the couch or bed with your smartphone. That's being lazy seeking advice on how to stop being lazy.

    • @dumbcat
      @dumbcat 6 лет назад +39

      One thing that helps is to think about what you want. What is it that you want to accomplish? Keep thinking about that thing. Keep thinking about it. The more you think about it the more your desire for it will build, until your desire becomes a burning desire that compels you to take action and overwhelms your desire to be lazy.

    • @jojoj3056
      @jojoj3056 6 лет назад +16

      Not if you implement the advice and take action. First thoughts, then action. Repetitive, persistent, goal-oriented action equal habits, however thoughts and a plan always come first so the videos can assist in that. However, all videos and no action is procrastination!!! Lol!!!

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  6 лет назад +10

      Try reading outside, or in a public place like a coffee shop or a library! Above all, don't read in a big comfy recliner or anything like that. I always get sleepy if I try to read on a chair that's too comfortable.

    • @PracticalInspiration
      @PracticalInspiration 6 лет назад +2

      Siwaphat Boonbangyang where are you reading? Your environment is key. Also try using alternative ways in reading, such as reading in shorter, but more intense bursts

    • @glen___1737
      @glen___1737 6 лет назад +2

      Siwaphat Boonbangyang I have to have some kind of background noise while reading. Have something on tv that’s not going to distract you, or what I prefer to do is listen to instrumental music. Pick something that isn’t too loud and distracting, but also don’t choose something that will put you to sleep. This helps me stay focused and create a zone where I can read while being able to stay stimulated enough to not fall asleep.
