Just a note: King Umberto II had the Seal Ring of State be buried with him when he died (he’s now buried in France, Savoy region, where his ancestors used to rule before they founded the modern Kingdom of Italy). This gesture was of great significance because it meant he disavowed his son as well as any other person claiming the Italian throne.

It would be interesting, but unfortunately it wouldn't really work by the same rules as these videos do. The office of Emperor in the Roman Empire (and in the Eastern Empire) was not exclusively hereditary. An Emperor's descendant COULD inherit the throne, but only if he had the support of the Roman people, Senate and army. A legitimate main line descendant of the previous Emperor could easily be deposed in favour of some nobody who got the support of the army.
So even if some Cantacuzino could trace their bloodline back to Emperor Ioannes VI, it would not really legitimize him in any way. As there is no Roman people, Roman army or Roman Senate to legitimize his rule.

the house of palailogos (last reigning dynasty of the byzantine empire) continued to exist in the duchy of monteferrat and I believe it married to the house of Lorraine which in turn married into the house of Habsburg so perhaps whoever is the head of the house of Habsburg-Lorraine would be first in line to the byzantine crown. The name "Savoy" is one that has left its mark on England in the form of the Savoy palace and later the upmarket hotel Savoy which was built on the site in London.King Henry the Third of England married Eleanor of Provence who was closely related (in law) with the Savoy rulers and when she became the English queen a host of Savoyard relatives followed her in the hope of preferment -Peter of Savoy in particular came to England (her uncle I think) and he soon went up the social scale and became duke of Richmond(de facto) and built himself a palace called theSavoypalace. This was destroyed in the Peasant's revolt but the name for the site stuck and became the Savoy Hotel. The musical duo Gilbert and Sullivan also were associated with the site so we have theSavoy operas of Gilbert and Sullivan.Peter of Savoy later returned to his homeland and became the duke.I think the strategic location of Savoy as one of the ways of getting over the Alps and into continental Europe was a reason for its importance -also in religious matters the savoy dukes acquired the celebrated "Holy Shroud of Turin"-the Sindone -which was originally housed in Chambery the initial savoyard capital until the dynasty shifted south to Turin which became their focus. The Savoys were on the winning side in the "War of the Spanish Succession" -the French lost and Savoy was rewarded with the island of Sicily later swapped for Sardinia and they were elevated to royal status -as was Prussia (Brandenburg) at the same time -that is why it is called the kingdom of Sardinia although that island was a mere backwater and it was Piedmont that was their chief source of power.Ironically the Savoy area and Nice were handed to France mid 19th Century in return for Napoleon the Third's espousing of Italian independence against the opposition of Austria.

Nice video. I'd like to point out two things though, even if the official title was that of king of Sardinia, in Italy we almost always refer to that pre-unification state as Piedmont-Sardinia or even just Kingdom of Piedmont. That's because the House of Savoy was culturally Piedmontese, their capital was Turin, their first language the Piedmontese dialect and all of their ministers before 1861 were from there too. They never cared for Sardinia which was only acquired because it came with the title of king. Also the House's proper name is Savoy-Carignano. Victor Emmanuel I fathered only daughters so the crown passed to the cadet branch of Carignano from Carlo Alberto onwards.

He wrote him a letter saying more or less: _"My dearest son, I love you. But what is the love of a single man for his own son when compared to the responsibility that man has towards his House? You know the rules of House Savoy, you know there can't be a Head of House who married a bourgeois, but you are choosing to do it anyway. As a father, I cannot not wish you the happiest love in your life, but as a King, our ancestors would look on us with severe shame, if only we dare to dishonour their name. But that’s a long line, and it’s farther, so I’m going to go through Gisela.

      Maria Antonia
Again, problems, Maria Antonia had no kids, so the crown would go to her sister’s child Carolina of Parma, except Carolina was dead. Carolina had kids and siblings, but I’m going to count as her kids receiving the crown

Amedeo is the real king of italy. His family was against Mussolini. They were all arrested and imprisoned by the nazis and deported to Austria. They were sentenced to death but the message never arrived, this is how they survived the war. Unlike poor Mafalda di Savoia who died in Dachau I think. They were never sent to exile after 1946. Indeed, Amedeo was born and raised in Italy. He served in the Italian Royal Navy and army. He loves and cherishes Italy so much. If the monarchy ever comes back, the throne should be given to the Aosta family. They are respectable and honorable. In Italy we call him 'Il Re in aspettativa' 'The king in waiting'

Secondly, the name of the last Bourbon King, Francis II, was "Francesco" in Italian, but many referred to him as "Franceschiello", which is the way of saying "Little Francis" in the dialect of Naples. It is debated whether this was due to his young age, or because of his little political power. Whatever it is, he was also called "Lasagna King". Not even kidding.

I'd say Amedeo, Duke of Aosta. The last king, Umberto II, told his son Vittorio Emanuele that he would lose his right of succession if he went on to marry the woman he ended up marrying anyway. There are letters that the two men exchanged that prove just that. Plus, since Emanuele Filiberto (Vittorio Emanuele's son) has two daughters, the law of succession should be entirely changed. Amedeo's son, on the other hand, has two sons...

Two things though. It would be looked at via a 21st century lens.
Having only daughters shouldn't rule out them inheriting the title. If Britain can do it with an active monarchy, then Italy can with a active one.

@@MsLouisez Oh, I agree, in this day and age the succession law could be changed and marrying a commoner would no longer be considered an obstacle. My observation was a very theoretical one, based on both the tradition followed by the House of Savoy and the requirements of the Salic Law. The possibility that a monarchical system is resumed in Italy is very remote, as there are several obstacles that would prevent that to happen. One of them, and a very serious one in my view, is the many ways that Vittorio Emanuele (the legitimate heir) has discredited himself over the decades in the eyes of many Italians. His son Emanuele Filiberto has tried to make himself known to Italians by participating to TV shows, et cetera, but in doing so he has kind of spoiled the mystique usually associated with monarchy, which is a shame.

    It gets even more complicated.
Vittorio Emmanuele is a jerk. His father Umberto knew this, and he actually passed the succession to Amadeo.
However, Vittorio refuses to acknowledge this will because he claims that being ousted as a monarch (when in 1946 Italy became a republic) counted as an abdicatiom thus the crown passed automatically to him.
So by legitimacy and royal will, Amadeo would be the king
Vittorio got arrested for being an idiot.

Many errors: 1. The unification of Italy ends in 1871 with the capture of Rome, which becomes the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. 2. Aimone is now Duke of Aosta since 2006 when his father became Duke of Savoy and head of the royal house. 3. The Bourbons could only claim the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, because the territorial conquests during the second war of independence were made to the Kingdom of Sardinia, with the sale of Lombardy first to France which ceded it to the Kingdom of Sardinia. During the third war of independence, the same thing happened with the Veneto first ceded to France and then to the Kingdom of Italy. 4. you did not say that Umberto II, at his death, had himself buried with the royal seal of the House of Savoy. This is of no small importance, the passing on of the royal seal is fundamental during the monarchical successions. 5. Charles of Bourbon has changed the Bourbon monarchical succession law which provides for the inheritance of the throne to male sons only, to favor his two daughters.

Emanuele Filiberto guided the 3rd italian army in WW1 and many people wanted him as new Chief of Italian Army after Caporetto defeat but it didnt happened: in case of another defeat, having a Savoy to guide the army... wasnt a wise move.

HRH prince Amadeus, duke of Savoy-Aosta, sadly died recently: let him rest in peace. And I think there’s a consensus, both among Italian monarchists and among scholars, that his son, HRH prince Aimone of Savoy-Aosta, the current duke of Aosta (duke of Savoy, duke of Apulia), is the legitimate pretender to the throne of Italy. Not only is he morally much worthier (I’m very sorry to have to say that) than Victor Emmanuel: his claim is very clearly founded on the rules of succession of the house of Savoy and on the late king's will: H. M. king Humbert II clearly and repeatedly told Victor Emmanuel (in writing) that, if he married Miss Ricolfi-Doria, he would be excluded from succession. He chose to do so: he was entitled to marry her, but he knew what that would mean. Victor Emmanuel’s siblings also acknowledged Amadeus’s rights. I think there can no more be any doubt about that: Aimone is the current head of the house of Savoy, and the only legitimate pretender to the throne of Italy, our most beloved country.

Hi. Could you answer a question please? The British, Dutch, Norwegian etc... royal families have married commoners, and it hasn't negated their rights to the throne. Why do morganatic marriages in other royal houses cause problems with the line of succession?

    • @visenyatargaryen9130
      @visenyatargaryen9130 2 года назад +2

Because different countries have different rules. And sometimes the rules were changed.
For example, in 1930s, King Edward VIII of the UK could not marry a divorced, commoner, American girlfriend, Wallis Simpson. Then, he abdicated.
In 2010s, Prince Harry married Meghan Markle whose background were the same as Wallis.
Non-reigning royalties are more traditional and they stick to the rules. Because those rules are what made them royals. It's the legacy of their dynasties, the only one they have now. They don't have thrones to be proud of, unlike the reigning royalties.

Royals were supposed to contract marriages with only royals, so your assertion that Vittorio Emmanuele's marriage to Marina Ricolfi-Doria is morganatic merely because she was not a member of the nobility is wrong. She could've been a non-royal princess (a rank in Italian nobility), and she still wouldn't be of equal rank to Vittorio Emmanuele.
