It's not just China and the Philippines who has competing claims over SCS. There are plenty of overlapping claims, but China is the only one getting overly aggressive.
They should not even be there in the first place. Other claimants could have worked things out long ago, except SOMEONE was stirring the pot. 10 dash line is insane.
You're demonising China. China happened to be the last to reclaim its sovereign territory after Vietnam and the Philippines had claimed much of the spartly islands.
If there had not been a civil war in China, all the islands in the South China Sea would today be under the de facto control of China, and when Japan surrendered in 1945, Chinese forces effectively took over Japanese control of the entire South China Sea region. However, as a result of the Chinese civil war, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei had the opportunity to seize control of some of the islands and pull up the sovereignty monuments that China had previously erected on various islands.
@@ofo101 Very unlikely. If the Chinese civil war didn't happen, Chinese mainland will remain split in two between the PRC and ROC - making the two governments more prone on land skirmishes between each other. If you want an alternate history where China did not split, then the official government would be the ROC which is an ally of USA. That means North Korea would not exist, and more importantly, China will be USA's first line of defense against the USSR in Asia. China, as an ally of USA in Cold War, would most likely be pre-occupied trying to control communism across its borders with Russia, thus giving South East Asian countries more opportunity to control SCS.
The Philippines was still a colony of Spain (for 400 YEARS!) and America (for 50 years) when China claimed sovereignty over the reefs and shoals in the South China Sea.

There’s a cluster of island north of Philippines and south of Taiwan. If base on Chinese claim that there were Chinese fishing in South China Sea so they can claim it, how come those clusters of island north were not included in the 10 dash line? Before people complain about China's coast guard enforcement operations, why was the Philippine armed force/Navy involved and violating China's sovereignty? Why were they carrying firearms? Philippine could have used the firearms first. Philippine might be transporting the weapons to the illegally shipwrecked warship for future use. Previously, Philippine Navy and Coast Guard were the ones that uses deadly force on others. It’s the Philippine Coast Guard that had shot to death a Taiwanese fisherman in 2013 near Taiping Island which is an island administered by Taiwan. Also, Philippine also stole Taiwan’s Zhongye Dao/Pag-Asa during a storm. In addition, two Vietnamese fishermen died in 2017 in a tragic incident with the Philippine Navy. Would people prefer to have China Coast Guard also use firearms (instead of knives) to carry out law enforcement operations, especially against Philippine Navy?

It’s impossible there’s no Chinese fishing in that part wherein most of Chinese migrated to Philippines settled in north area. If you put this together it doesn’t make sense at all.
The heart of the current tension between China and the Philippines is the grounded Philippine vessel BRP Sierra Madre in the second Thomas shoal. The ship was grounded in 1999 to maintain Philippine territorial claim. But it is now facing the risk of falling apart. What is being contested is the resources in what Philippine considers as its EEZ, which is a notion developed in more recent decades. Document 578 of American Foreign Policy Basic Documents 1977-1980 is a 1979 letter to then-Philippine Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Romulo, in which Vance further clarified the U.S. legal interpretation of the MDT. He declared that armed attack under the MDT refers to external armed aggression against any part of Philippine metropolitan territory as defined by the 1898 Treaty of Paris between Spain and the U.S. and the 1900 Treaty of Washington between Great Britain and the U.S. (amended in 1930), as well as island territories in the Pacific that are under Philippine jurisdiction. Moreover, “armed attack on any Philippine armed forces, public vessels or aircraft in the Pacific would not have to occur within the Philippine metropolitan territory or island territory under its jurisdiction in the Pacific in order to come within the definition of Pacific Area in Article V.” Thus, armed attack on said forces or vessels taking place in undisputed maritime areas in the South China Sea would fall within the scope of the MDT.

China wants to invest in the Philippines but the Philippines has a very demanding requirement for foreign investment and very strict labour laws, which deter foreign investors not only the Chinese investors. China invests tremendously in Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia instead.

As a Chinese, setting aside nationalism, in my personal opinion, to solve the South China Sea issue, both China and the Philippines need to give up some proposals appropriately in order to reach a permanent agreement. Any third-party intervention can only make the problem more complex.
problem is, China can easily overpower their smaller neighbors both militarily and economically. The fact that the area is already recognized by international courts as a Philippine territory and China simply doesn't recognize it tells you that they will not give this up
look at a map, how can China have any claim to that area?
The previous administration carried it out, making a friendlier approach to China, but ultimately the Philippines suffered a backstab.

This report is either deliberately biased or incompetent. The Chinese official media reported that Philippines vessels were carrying construction material in an attempt to build up the wrecked ship into a permanent structure. The DW reporter also played on words to make it sound like the Chinese cut off a Philippino sailor’s finger when in fact his injury was probably an accident.
