  • In this episode, we are doing a major upgrade to our off-grid solar power system on our off cabin by installing four new 345W solar panels and a new charge controller. We installed them on the wall using mounting brackets that can be used for metal roofs, RVs, and caravans.

I'm so excited for this! We have a very small basic system, and I'm the one who does the wiring. I've been afraid to go any farther .... but the way you explain things really clicks with me and I am going to see if I can follow along. A lot of the solar hook up videos on u tube are very.... techy, and geeked out as if the person they are talking to already knows about this stuff.... when you explain stuff it's enough tech info that is easily digestible.... I am learning so much watching you build your homestead ... love your channel. And thank you so much for sharing with us

I would go parallel then series, just because the little bit of shading in up corner will affect those solar panels that are in series. That's why micro grid tie inverters are so efficient than the other big grid tie solar setups. Hope's this helps.

you need to test the output of the ones with the corner shading compared to the ones just below them without any shading. many solar panels drop significantly in output when there is ANY shading on any part of the panel. higher end panels with more connections between the cells can reduce shading effects but those look like standard panels to me. if you are using power optimizers or micro-inverters on each panel, those can also mitigate shading effects.

The best, if you got the space, is a ground mount. Way easier to clean the snow off in winter. And if you don’t have shadow problem and the charge contrôler can take it I would go the highest DC voltage to minimise voltage lost, like 3 or 4 in series!

The current mounting will certainly make do for a while but as you have acknowledged it is far from ideal, especially in the summer. And honestly the are not really a very appealing house esthetic. Given the amount of snow you get I would tend towards a ground mounted system rather than one on a garage roof. It would be much easier to clean (snow in the winter and debris in the summer), could be adjustable for the season (angle to the sky) and is more readily expandable if you eventually want a higher capacity system.

I'm a bit scared about seeing the solar panels mounted on a vertical house wall.
You mentioned the shading, you have today ... remember that we are in winter, close to the lowest sun elevation.
I see 2 issue coming up:
First is shading: In summer (sun elevation is at about 60°), there will be a lot of the solar panels (~75%) in the shadow of the roof overhang. The small cells in shadow have to survive the power going through it, which causes rapid degradation, as they heat-up. So this will ruin / age your panels very quickly.
Second is the angle the sun light hits the solar panels: Today it's close to its optimum (90° angle of attack for the sun light to the solar cells is the best). In summer it will be at about 30°.
I fear the 880 watts, you saw today, will be close to the max over the year, even in the mid of summer. :-(
Why not mounting them on the roof of your house?
The angle of attack for the sun light is not optimal, but way better than the todays mounting.
There are many ways to seal the screws long term water tight (learn from RV videos what sealant they use).
In case you're scared about drilling holes your roof for mounting them, glue them to your roof!
Watch out also for RV mounted / glued solar panels. I saw videos of it and they did not rip-off, even when driving at 65mph on the highway. So this resists that wind load, shouldn't that be sufficient to withstand some stormy wind in your area?
Mounting on the house roof brings another adavantage over building a surface mount beside the house: It elevates the panels, so less shadow from the high trees around there. ;-)
