I am the Owner of the Lunar Rock Long Bed in The Video. I Have been into Cars for amost my whole Life. More than 55 years. I Grew up in a Shop my Dad was a Master Mechanic. I run with the Best Oil for an Oil Change. This Truck had an Oil Change at 1000 miles I take Care of My Vehicles. If The KDMAX TUNE Out Performed the OTT Tune I would be Running it. All this Dave didnt know? Are we Implying that if he knew I would have gotten a Different Tune? And the Results would have been Different? I had my Choice of Tune at NO COST. NO COST TO ME. and I Chose the OTT Tune. You can like it or Not Dave does not Own this Truck and Does not have to Drive it Every day. We Do. OTT Baby
I had told my Wife if She Could Imagine Spending 450.00 on a KDMAX Tune then Later Driving a Friends Truck with an OTT Tune I would be In the DOG HOUSE😅😂😢😢
Just bought my “new to me” 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD OFF ROAD and was considering buying a Magnuson super charger But after watching this video I’m convinced that the OTT tune would suit my driving needs! Thanks for the informative video
Been on the fence about getting my Toyota turned. Definitely on the fence about which tune to pick. Thank you very much for putting this video together!!!
Just got my Taco tuned today with Q and the OTT. I can’t compare it to another tune, but I definitely go along with how smooth it shifts. Also, in this video and my own experience, Q is knowledgeable, professional and helpful. Highly recommended to anyone considering this upgrade
I have OTT on my 23 Tacoma SR5. Mild/medium. Its much smoother. It shifts way less so I actually think it will last longer. If you think about it having more down low is better. The engine isn't having to rev way up as much to get you up to speed. I am getting better MPG now. I can actually cruise up hill at 80-85mph in 6th gear.
I've been running the Toyowerx tune for the last 5k miles on my 3rd Gen. Better than stock for sure, but the initial throttle jerk just wears on you with constantly having to manage the throttle. Got the OTT mild/ light tune and it really is more refined. No throttle jerk. No lag. Smooth crisp shifts. Having paid for and used both I would recommend OTT to any 3rd Gen Tacoma driver.
I have the KDMAX & dont like that little jurk off the line, get sick of EASING on the throttle trying to get a smooth take off. Did you notice any difference in MPG?
I think to make it even more fair they should installed the tuning without letting the driver know what he was getting, that way the result would be 100% unbias.
I had Paul from OTT tunes tune my 22 off road last year up in Redmond Oregon and it has been a huge upgrade. You still need to get on the throttle and get a downshift to increase speed instead of torquing on but overall the drivability is increased. The shift timings are way more user friendly and more real world, I live in a very mountainous area and after the truck got broke in and re learned I was very impressed overall, totally worth it.
Over one year with my KDMax tune and am very happy. Either way , KD or OTT, it is incredibly ignorant that Toyota sold Tacomas with serious throttle response issues. No company stays on top forever.
Went with mild/med OTT tune . gained 3 mpg avg. paying for itself in 1 year. Get it, it’s a no brainer. dclb with .488 gears 3 inch lift steel bumpers steel underneath and roof rack. The truck is perfect with the gears and tune.
I have the ott tune on my 21 trd or. And I love it. The is still no race car but it’s definitely quicker the transmission tuning alone is worth the cost of the tune.
I went with the KDMax sport (33s/4:88s) i felt it was to touchy off the line. Was in Ontario Ca. in the rain & noticed i had to be EXTREMELY careful pulling away from the light or the tires would break loose on the painted part of the intersections. Had it knocked down to the "normal" its good, overall I've been happy BUT i do notice the slight jumpiness taking off & experience an odd shift now & then. I am considering switching over to the OTT & giving them a shot.
New to your channel, and I subscribed!! Great video!! Been wanting two OTT tunes for about a month now on my son's and my 3rd genTacomas, but my nearest tune guy is about 3hrs from me. He has a meet that is coming up on Oct 8th, that is going to be closer to me!! I'm hoping to get it done then, or soon!!
Welcome to the channel! Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. The OTT team will take great care of you and your son. It will be the best mod you ever do to your trucks. Let me know how it goes and looking forward to having you on the channel with us🤙🏼!
dyno testing on both tune would have been great. the company doing their own dyno to advistise is too bias . i would have love a third party like raymond here to do it also. maybe a next video for that????
Dyno tuning leaves such a limited window for comparing something like these two tunes.. The drivability and improved torque modeling is at all throttle positions, not just at WOT, so it needs to be felt in person to fully understand the level of refinement these guys are talking about.
I just got a 2021 Tacoma pro. So glad I found your channel. I live in Santa Ana and found out “Q” is local to me. I’m definitely going to get the overland tune. At first I was looking into the pedal commander but you definitely sold me on the tune! Now that I’m subscribed I look forward to your videos!
Thank you! Looking forward to having you with us. Q will take great care of you and the OTT will be the best thing you have done to your Tacoma. Hopefully we can meet in person one of these days!🤙🏼
I had the OTT on my 2020 OR Tacoma (mild/medium) January of this year and I love it. Pedal feels good and holds gear when I need that extra power. Makes the truck feels half has heavy. (All stock with an are cap on 264/70/16 tires)
I have a 2022 tacoma trd sport 4x4 stock tires and lift. From the factory the performance was a major let down from a V8. I had the Kd max tune (sport throttle settings) on the truck within the first month. I has been on the truck over 18 months now. I personally i like that you dont have to stop the pedal for the truck to start moving. No more gear searching . It will hold a gear longer when it feels like it needs to. Specially when hauling a trailer. I normally get 22mpgs hwy 65-70, 19 mpgs 75-80, and 12 mpgs when hauling a loaded trailer. I have not tired the OTT tune.
The largest difference between OTT and KD is how VVT-iW is configured. Stock tune and KD run modified Atkinson cycle from 0-3800 rpm. OTT decides not to run modified Atkinson cycle until cruising at highway speed. This is the main reason why OTT feels so different. It is literally injecting more fuel than the others. The next largest difference is shifting. OTT retains stock-like shift patterns while KD raises shift point to predetermined levels. Next is the throttle. OTT's offerings seem smoother. KD's Lite is fine, Normal and Sport are quite touchy.
Yeah the shift points with KDMax, while better than stock, got really annoying. My truck would NOT shift into 4th until 47mph, no matter what. And the normal throttle setting was sensitive and choppy down low.
@@scooter9023 that was the most annoying part of kdmax. yes they fixed the shifting but it annoyed the piss out of me. surprisingly the high rpms on kdmax didn't lower mpg. however on ott mpg went down. but ott really offers more power.
I have a question though on the video. It looks like the first guy you guys went to wasn't aware of what you guys were doing? The second guy looked like he did a ride along before and after with an extensive interview. Is there any footage of the kdmax guy doing his ride alongside that we can see? Just curious on the full story. Almost seems like a paid advertisement for the second company. I like to do a lot of research before I make a purchase for my truck and still not convinced. Sorry just my view on the video. Thanks.
Appreciate your feedback! Dave, as I mentioned in the video was very polite and professional. However he doesn’t have any experience with tuning both OTT and KD.. so a drive along wouldn’t have made a difference because the video was about the tune, not the tuner/tuners.. When I let Dave know that the point of the video was to compare the KDMax and the OTT his answer was “oh okay, yeah sounds good”. The reason we took Q for a test drive was because he was a former KDMax tuner and brought a lot of knowledge by being able to explain issues that Ray was having and a lot of his other former KDMax clients experienced before switching to OTT. Since I have never ran the KDMax tune before on my personal truck, I am trying to get information from others that have.. I will be working on another video soon where I will be interviewing several Tacoma owners that previously ran the KDMax and switched to the OTT.. I can’t find anyone who switched from the OTT to the KDMax… I want to know why and see if they indeed had similar experiences and do they miss the KDMax tune in their trucks. I think one very important thing some people are looking past, is that this video wasn’t about Dave or Q.. it’s about Ray and his review of the tunes.. this video cost me $600.00 to make.. so definitively no paid advertising here… as well as close to 20-30hrs of my time in creating/editing the video.. this channel is here and dedicated to helping Tacoma owners make wise and informed decisions on how to get the most out of their Tacomas.. I won’t give a good review on a product I don’t believe in.. but I won’t trash it either.. I will highlight the good points, but give an honest assessment on which product is better and why I believe so.. for this video, it was Rays turn to do that. That’s why my channel is different.. it’s not just my feedback and thoughts.. it’s a platform for other Tacoma owners as well. 🤙🏼
@westcoasttaco thanks for the reply. Not trying to stir anything up I'm just older and had that question in my mind. Just looked more pre arranged on the second one but just one. But thank you again for the info.
@@robodigger my pleasure and no problem at all. My biggest highlight was Ray, I wanted the majority of the video to be about his experiences and his question’s getting answered. I will say this.. after experiencing the KDMax tune for myself on Rays truck, I am very glad I went with the OTT.. saved me the hassle of not having to switch from the KDMax 👍🏼
Time and time again - OTT has been proven to be the gold standard. Always honest to their customers and community. No manipulated/exaggerated data like other options out there - always backed by accurate performance data. This is what you can expect when a tune is created by guys with actual tuning experience.
Another great video. No fluff or filler videos here on this channel. Real world practical and useful information. A must subscribe channel if you are a Tacoma owner.
Appreciate the in depth and informative comparison video! I currently drive a 22’ Lunar Rock OR (similar to Ray’s) and treated my Taco with the KDMax Sport tune rt before Christmas 😂. Since the KDMax comes in 4 flavors… Lite, Normal-Lite, Normal, and Sport, maybe their “Sport” is comparable to the OTT “Race” where the pedal response and shifting is aggressive and does not feel as smooth as the OTT Mild/Medium? I’m wondering if Ray had one of the milder KDMax tune instead of their Sport, it would ride similar to the OTT Mild/Medium? For the record, OTT tune was the consensus by majority of owners on Tacoma forums and Reddit. After seeing this video, I’m wondering if I should tune down to one of the less aggressive tunes so it rides similar to the OTT Mild/Medium.
Thanks for making the comparison vid even tho I already knew OTT is better Definitely improves the performance of the truck. But really felt the difference going to 5.29 gears. Now the truck holds power. When it had stock gears and the OTT tune, It will still down shift going up a hill or trying to pass a car on the highway and it will hold the gear in high rpm’s. But now with the 5.29 gears and the tune I could be going up a hill and it will keep me in the same gear just with more acceleration and power with out having to down shift. Currently on 285/70/17 planing on going true 35s later down the road.
I got the OTT about 3 months ago. It has given me 2 mpg better fuel mileage in town and on the highway. The only thing I don't like is taking off from a start. It is jerky as hell and almost embarrassing to take off from a light or drive around in a parking lot. Once your going it's fine. Just what I have experienced.
I got the time (mild/medium) and didn’t feel that at all. I’ve read a few people saying this. I have a cap and a tab bigger tires (only 265/70/16) and do not feel that at all. I can reverse to hook the trailer etc stop and go traffic with no problems. No jerk unless I hit it and it’s still smooth. You might need more weight or go with lite?
Thanks for the video. How can I tell if I am talking to a legit OTT tuner? I know about the map of tuners but still weary of someone posing as OTT when they’re really not.
As long as you use the tuners on the map from the OTT website you shouldn’t have any issues. They only post authorized tuners that are in their circle.
I need to chime in here.. I have a 2020 MTPro, and have been working with our local tuner in Canada with giving my feedback on basically every tune thats been available.. I will say, that his video is extremely accurate with every detail they spoke about. you really want the OTT, and in a manual you want the light throttle setting. The direct drive element in a MT requires you to be more dilligent on keeping your foot steady to not have a jerky pedal and a lungy feel.. The latest manual update is by far the best I have had with any tune to date. I just currently installed a Magnuson and the OTT tune.... all I can say is it is, the Holy grail..!
Thanks for the info. Please make vid of yours!! I would be using SASK OTT as my closest tuner. What version is it called for reference purposes? What can I expect with 87 Octane ?
@@KTB3007 I use Yotatune in Ontario.. The latest update for the MT was around end of June this year. Your tuner will know the version #.. If you drive it responsibly, I saw around 0.8l/100km improement from what I was getting stock. The power will be so much more refined and smoother, with much better acceleration.. The truck will move with authority and feel like it should've been like that from the factory.. I honestly feel that Toyota got the tuning to 85% and said good enough, and couldn't be bothered to invest in the finished product..
Hey my friend, great 👍 video and content. I do have a question; I live on the other side of the border. I own a 3rd generation Tacoma (2023) It should be no issues if I want to OTT it is the same powertrain as US. Right? Thanks 😊
@@westcoasttaco thank you very much for your kind attention, in a near future I will OTT and my closest location it is San Diego area. Have a blessed 🙌 weekend 🙏 ✨️
@@quocpham921 Dear Mr. Quocpham921, thank you very much for your time and kind attention to this subject. Have a great and blessed Sunday. I look forward for your reply.
Yup that's it I'm making an appointment for the ott tune. This video lowkey kind of shit on KDMax's tune 😂. That's ok though, as someone who is interested in getting a tune myself. I'm happy to see a direct comparison between both tunes on the same truck. I was on the fence about which tune would work for me the best. Ott just seems to be the more polished and refined tune for your everyday driving shenanigans. I can't wait!
I’ve had the KDMax for about 6 months. Everything was great, but I do agree that that acceleration from a stop position was way jumpy. I had middle tuned with it. I just got the latest update (Sept. 2023) and it doesn’t jump off the line now. The tuner said the update fixed that and supposedly improved the MPG. I can vouch for the acceleration fix but I see no difference with my mpg. I’ve had the updated LDMax for around 2 months now. I would love to test out the OTT. Wish there was trial/test run or even a deal for changing tunes. After the money spent, it’s hard to spend that amount again for a different tune which may or may be better. Great video👍
@@xylianis08 I have the most updated and set to middle setting. I just read (today) that YotaWerk just acquired KDMax… I need to research and see what this means to me!
I went from Kd max to ott toque tune. I love it. It’s night and day difference. There is no lag in the shift. It always finds the rite gear. You will fall in love with your truck all over again.
I had my Taco tunes with OTT this past weekend. So far, so good. If you are in the Western NY, Western PA area, hit up Chris in Buffalo. Very knowledgeable and patient with all of my questions.
City mpg won’t change much, highway MPGs can potentially increase due to the vehicles tendency to gear hunt less, thus staying in a higher more efficient gear on freeway/highway cruising. They increased for me.. also the fuel blend during the winter contains less energy than summer blends thus can reduce power and thusly affect MPGs as well. Proper maintenance should never be looked over, clean air filters, good quality gas, good tire pressures, clean air flow sensors, reducing and carrying unnecessary weight, not “racing around” etc. One thing Ray did say in this video is that both tunes were hands down better than stock. But that he felt the OTT was more refined and performed better. Lastly for altitude, I can’t speak from experience, but I would assume depending on how high you were traveling there would be some differences compared to being lower in elevation. Hope this helps you out.🤙🏼
That’s what you want from your truck that power he only drove the first tune for a weekend or a week because some people don’t drive like a little people you still available within a day all the people take them a while what about that time is it snappy but that’s looking for suppose have a 280 some horsepower V6 the tune makes them a beast
I would reach out to your local tuner and see if they have any promotions coming up soon. I’ve seen a few Tuners do special discounts for limited periods.
I’m averaging anywhere from 18 to 21 miles to the gallon with the OTT on my truck on the highway. Since he only did a week with each tune, it was hard to get the differences with the mpg’s… my guess is that both tuned probably provide the same increase in fuel efficiency.
I've gotten use to my old Toyota Pickup with the linear throttle response using the mechanical throttle connection. But my newer Toyota Tacoma has the lag response and gear hunting is irritating.
In all honesty, Dave, as I mentioned in the video was very polite and professional. However when I asked him questions about the tune, it’s development and testings behind it.. his answers, unfortunately were not very insightful.. they were brief, and he seemed slightly uncomfortable about talking too much in-depth about these popular topics. I did my best to make his part of the video flow naturally.. When I let him know that the point of the video was to compare the KDMax and the OTT his answer was “oh okay, yeah sounds good”. Q, being a former KDMax tuner brought a lot of knowledge and details as to why a lot of people had stopped running the KDMax and switched over. I have yet to find one Tacoma owner that ran a OTT that switched over to the KDMax.. Q also brings more to the table because he understands how both work.. he’s tuned for both companies, ran both tunes on his personal truck, and sees the results that Tacoma owners want. It wouldn’t make sense for him to stand behind OTT, if KDmax was the best tune on the market. When searching across Tacoma forums the vast majority of Tacoma owners that have the OTT highly recommend it over the KDMax and many of them were previously running the KD. In fact on every forum or page I’ve seen, OTT is favored by a landslide. However, since I had never driven a KDMax tuned truck I wanted to do a video that allowed a 3rd party Tacoma owner to do a review on his truck with no tune experience in order to give a raw scenario that provided accurate and honest feedback for its viewers. This video cost me around $600.00 to make.. and I received nothing for that from either KD or OTT.. the purpose of the video wasn’t to tear down KDMax.. the purpose of the video was to help Tacoma owners make the best decision possible when it comes to which tune will most likely be the one that they will be satisfied with the first go around... no more.. no less.. I do appreciate your feedback and insight as it will help me make better content in the future 👍🏼🤙🏼.
@@westcoasttaco ya it’s amazing. I have more power, better gas mileage and that factory hunt for gears is long gone. The kdmax was good. But the ott is balanced and smooth.
So he "KDMax"said that after the first tune, if you need to change it it is free of service. But the local KDMax near me did my tune 2 yrs ago and now the 10.0 is out and he will charge $100 to update it.

I have a good question What if I have the OTT and some time in future when I bring my Tacoma to the dealer for maintenance and Toyota releases new ecu software and decides to update mine as it was factory update?
I'm back with the 2.7 I4 cyl 2022 SR5 and after watching this, I think I'm ready to try the OTT and was wondering if you know of or could connect me with a certified licensed tuner in or near Memphis TN, that I can link up with to give it a shot. Your videos have been enough to ease my concerns about the warranty and convince me to get the tune. My reason for wanting the tune is for no lag with throttle response and just have the smooth and seamless shift responses as what should be normal. My driving is normal daily commuting and no off roading or towing, just the tune to make what is all ways an enjoyable experience with the Tacoma even more pleasurable. Thanks so much for your efforts in gathering and sharing this information with us.
Thanks Quoc! And Thanks Michael! You won’t be disappointed! Here’s a tuner in TN. Let us know how it goes! I run 91 all the time. The tune will adapt to either octane but I have noticed a significant difference in performance by running 91. Ray had a half tank of 91 when we started the tune and the filled up at the halfway mark with Regular. He said he liked the feel from 91 octane. Hope that helps 👍🏼
Fantastic video!!! Everyone needs to get the OTT, there definitely is know better!! Q is the best guy to do it! And thank you @westcoasttaco for this video and giving information to help us all understand and love our trucks. I have the mild/medium and my truck drives like a dream! I recently had Q bump me up from my Lite/mild and it has been awesome!! Thank you again!!
Don’t eceb tell the dealer about the tune I done get my truck worked on by the dealer only if it’s something that is it a warranty thing that the only reason I go to the dealer my brother has his own auto shop and I get my own parts under his account for me and I paid cash for 11 but I get his discount on whatever I buy in one of his mechanics so he does all my work on the side and we both have 2017 Trd sports Tacoma plus he has a 2021 forerunner Trd all blacked out
You won’t regret it! Have had a lot of people have the same concern and trust me when I say this.. I totally get it.. but you will thank me if you do get it.. will be the best decision you will ever make with your taco 🤙🏼
good vid. I did the kdmax on my 22 sport. I'm not sure the overland was offered in my area (east coast) I paid $450. If greatly improved the truck vs stock. I don't know why the 3rd gen tacomas were so bad from factory. They constantly gear hunt and when accelerating, as soon as you hit 3rd gear it was liked somebody suddenly put a 4cyl engine in your truck. On a side note everyone should be aware of the danger with the keyless entry. They are cloning keyfobs and stealing cars (happened to my daughter). Do this to safeguard your truck. ruclips.net/video/LJlP9dx94zs/видео.html
There was nothing at all unbiased about this video. In fact, it was the total opposite of that. Dave didn’t even know this was a comparison video, and was given no chance to respond to any of the allegations made by the competition or to the customer’s concerns. This whole video is completely consistent with OTT’s underhanded marketing strategy, which focuses completely on smearing the competition rather than promoting their own product. Of course, that’s not a surprise coming from a content creator that went into the whole thing with a clear bias.
At the end of the day it all comes down to what Ray liked more and how he compared the two tunes.. I could have made this a 5 min a video.. having Ray drive the KDMax and then the OTT on his truck and have had neither tuner in the video… yet, I truly believe the results would not have changed at all. Also I let Dave know we were doing a video comparing the two tunes. I asked both tuners the same questions.. Q was more thorough on his responses and has more tuning experience.. he’s been thorough every time I’ve interviewed him. As mentioned in the video, he used to tune KDMax before OTT.. so his knowledge on both tunes and how they compare are heightened compared to someone who has only tuned KDMax. If KDMax was better why would he have gone to the OTT? The results speak for themselves.. Every time I asked Dave a question, the answer was brief and didn’t provide a lot of depth or detail..I also mentioned that Dave was professional and complimented his company well. I wish Dave and the KDMax team the very best, but the results weren’t based off of my thoughts or experiences.. that’s why I brought in Ray who had zero experience with tunes.. in-fact I didn’t even drive Rays truck until the day he got the OTT because I wanted his experience with the KDMax tune to be completely his opinion and his alone. Like any competition there could only be one winner.. the numbers across the board on where the majority of Tacoma owners stand when it comes to Tunes speaks for itself. My goal is to help Tacoma owners make wise and informed decisions before they spend a significant amount of money on their trucks.. making the Tacoma the best that it can be.. I do Appreciate your feedback and thoughts 🤙🏼
I Chose the OTT Tune Strictly because of Performance. I could have had The Tune of My Choice and Do , I Chose the OTT Tune. We Are Greatful to have been Asked to Do this Review and in fact had Told Blake that I will give An Honest Review and Will Chose the Better Tune.
For others that actually read these comments, please know that Dave did NOT know this was a KDMax vs OTT video. He was in fact completely blindsided by this. This is not hearsay or second hand knowledge. This information came directly from Dave. This video is in fact very biased and was clearly done in a manner intended to paint KDMax in a negative light. Again, a typical practice on the part of some members of the competition’s team. It’s sad that a creator assuming the role of an unbiased video “journalist” would mislead his viewers in this manner. It’s unethical and dishonorable.
It’s like you’ve been married for 20 years and one day you kick your wife out the door And next day You have yourself two new young girlfriends Ones blonde and ones red head OTT and KDMax Doesn’t matter which one you pick You gonna drive the shit out them 😆
You absolutely can and it is probably the best time to do it.. #1 the truck will break in better since everything will be running more organically from the beginning. #2 you will get the maximum enjoyment from your truck from the very beginning in how it drives.
I’m a little curious as to how the tunes were paid for and how much was charged for each tune. When I asked earlier about cost this was your response “I would check with your local tuner for pricing as they may vary.. but for here in San Diego, it was $450 for the KDMax and $500.00 for the OTT.” And when reading through the various comments you mentioned at least twice you paid $600 to make this video. I assume that was for mainly tune cost KDMAX and OTT. You quote…. “I think one very important thing some people are looking past, is that this video wasn’t about Dave or Q.. it’s about Ray and his review of the tunes.. this video cost me $600.00 to make.. so definitively no paid advertising here…” If the cost was $450 KDMAX and $500 OTT then tunes alone would have been $950 minimum? Did KDMAX or OTT cut you a discount for the tunes? That wouldn’t seem fair or “Apple to Apple”. I don’t know but some things in the video along with what you’ve stated (more than once so seems not accidental) seems slanted towards OTT and as a paid or at least slanted towards them as a favorite before the video was made. Why wasn’t Dave of KDMAX given the same heads up and a comparison ride along to critique OTT performance? Ask the customer questions “you feel that hesitation or lag”. It seems to be another Competitor testing it main competitor tune to sway public opinions. Just saying……
John, I appreciate you reaching out.. My guess is that you are apart of the KDMax Tuning team? Looks like you are located in Vancleave, MS according to your Facebook page?? Your not looking for answers.. which is what the majority of my viewers want from my videos.. your looking for an excuse as to why Ray chose the OTT over the KDMax tune. We can go round and round all day.. but that won't solve anything for you. The reason Ray chose the OTT and countless others have chosen the OTT over the KDMax seems to have a common reason behind it.. and it's because of the difference in performance and drivability that the OTT offers compared to KDMax. I personally have no quarrel with the KDMax team.. However, the fact that a few commenters (that seem to be tied to KDMax), can't accept that the owner of his own truck can't make an honest statement and decision about which tune he prefers seems very bothersome.. Ray has driven his truck with both the KDMax and OTT.. Have you??? The truck belongs to Ray, he is the one driving it everyday.. not Dave, not Q, and not myself.. Having a tuner talk about their tune won't change the way the tune functions or affects the vehicles performance/drivability.. There's a reason the Tacoma is the number 1 selling mid-sized truck in America.. and it's not because of it's SALES REPS.. it's because of it's REPUTATION for being reliable, dependable, tested and proven right out of the box... The OTT has proven to be of similar caliber for Tacoma owners that have chosen this tune.. The reviewers/consumers will speak on behalf of products that work or don't work for them.. or which one out performs the other and explain why.. it's that simple. I have read countless articles and forums online about Tacoma owners that have had both tunes.. and all of the feedback I could find were in favor of the OTT. The results across the board speak for themselves... However, I personally had zero experience with the KDMax tune before doing this video, but I wanted to give KDMax a chance to see if the majority of Tacoma owners who had given their feedback were biased or misleading with these statements that favored OTT. I haven't seen one video that did what I did here with Ray.. and that was take both tunes.. put them on the same truck and have a third party individual (with no aftermarket tune expiernce) compare the two of them with no cost out of his pocket to make sure he wasn't swayed by costs or expenses.. Ray did everyone a favor.. he helped provide constructive criticism where the KDMax tune needs some refinement and helped Tacoma owners understand what he was feeling with both tunes and why he chose one over the other. If you feel that the KDMax tune is in fact better, I would be happy to host both tuners at a Dyno facility, as well as find a few other ways to allow third party reviewers to test both tunes, that haven't experienced either tune before.. I can make this as in-depth as you would like, Autos, Manuals... On Road.. Off Road.. you name it! Just let me know and I will be happy to coordinate. The ball is in KDMax's court.
I don't think this video was done fairly and that the creators of it were clearly biased to OTT. You didn't give KD max a fair shot at all. If the take off was hurky jerky as you say than why not go back to KD max and see if it could be adjusted? Nor did you sit with the KD max technician in your truck like you did with OTT to understand your driving habits. If you are going to do a test at least set the same conditions and be fair. You know your buddy having OTT biased your decision to go with OTT. Also I am not biased to KDmax or OTT I am just making an observation when you do a comparison that you should set the testing standards exactly the same and not be biased one way or another.
Hey Westcoasttaco, I’d address you on first name basic, but don’t know it. I’m a KDMAX tuner as you stated and not hiding that fact. I’m more than happy for Ray, to be tuned and happy. Sincerely happy, no matter his choice. My only point is the video does not give a true Apple to Apple to comparison to viewers. Ray made his choice and he’s happy and I’m happy for him. A tuned Tacoma is a happy Tacoma! To be fair to KDMAX a true comparison would have been equally the same on all elements, test drive (each competitor ride along comparing the others tune and asking and answering questions), and cost (still not given an answer wether OTT was given at a discount price. I know KDMAX cost $450 leaving you $150 for the OTT tune. This is based on your stated $600 cost to make video). The only original complaint and Ray even mentioned that it wasn’t a gripe was the throttle response was a little peppy in traffic. If Dave would have have been given the chance to ride along he could and would have re-flashed to a more suitable setting. Even made a custom tune if necessary. Dave wasn’t afforded these same options that Quac was. So all I’m saying it wasn’t a complete and equal test or comparison. And then again if I’m getting a free tune from a guy already on OTT and friends either tuner and videoing those test I’d feel pressure to lean one way. Just being honest.
John, I think all Tacoma owners that have had their tacos tuned can agree on one thing.. a tuned Tacoma is always better and happier than a stock tuned Tacoma.. However, how much better and how much happier depends on the tune that was installed on the truck.. and it seems to be the remaining question many Tacoma owners had. Here’s why I believe the tune was apples to apples.. and I want you to consider this for a moment.. Ray had zero experience with either tune/tuner. Both tunes were of no charge to him. He received pretty much the same exact throttle settings from both tuners based off of each tuners options (Dave didn’t install a custom tune and Q didn’t install a custom tune), and Ray had a week with each tune before making his decision. At the end of the day, “who paid what” is completely irrelevant.. as long as Ray didn’t pay for any of it. And the reason I stated that I contributed $600.00 to making this video was so that people could understand that I didn’t do this as “paid advertisement” for OTT. My goal was to provide answers to Tacoma owners who wanted a comparison of how the tunes really compared out of the box.. a raw review on what they would receive when getting the tune themselves. In fact I was curious myself having no experience with KDMax until now. Dave didn’t ask to come along for the test drive, if he would have asked, we would had loved to have him with us.. but if you watch the video you will notice that Ray was initially very impressed with the KDMax tune and was satisfied. However, after driving it for a week he started having issues with certain aspects of the tune.. you can actually see his head get kicked back a few times on the initial test drive, but like most drivers.. noticing these things can take a few days to set in as the “newness” wears off.. just like when we get our trucks off the lot.. after a few weeks we start to notice some significant shortcomings with the stock tune and look for aftermarket tune options/solutions.. The reason Q came along for the test drive for both the KDMax and the OTT was because he wanted to be able to explain what was going on.. Q has something that Dave didn’t have.. and that was experience as a former KDMax tuner and experience as an OTT tuner.. Do you or Dave have experience in tuning OTT tunes? That’s why Q had more screen time.. viewers want to know why something is or isn’t doing something... When Dave was asked how the KDMax tune was developed and what was the background of the tune.. he said “OV Tune, yeah we did some dyno and our 50+ tuners get to try it out”.. for a viewer that doesn’t provide a ton of confidence.. when asking Q about the background of OTT his answer was in depth and very detailed on why they believe they are having such great success. They are also very transparent about dyno results and expanding on a foundation of tuners that come from a background in automotive performance before the VF Tuner software was really a thing. I think you kind of answered your own question about asking us if the OTT is really better and if Ray did get a fair experience… you feel like Dave didn’t get a fair chance to adjust the stock settings of a tune combination that is recommended for trucks that are more in a “stock” form.. Q didn’t get that opportunity either.. He installed the Mild/Medium and didn’t get to customize anything about that for Ray.. Ray and I met up a week later without Q and guess what??? Q didn’t get to adjust settings.. he didn’t need to.. the OTT tune that was installed and probably the most comparable in throttle settings to the “normal” setting Dave installed with KDMax Pro 10.0 was perfect right out of the box.. Tacoma owners don’t want to have to go back and forth to tuners to have things adjusted over and over again.. they want a tune that is “plug and play”.. a tune that lets them enjoy their Tacomas to its full extent and capabilities the first go around.. and that’s what Ray found with the OTT. That’s it… I do appreciate your feedback as this platform is for all Tacoma owners to share their experiences with their Tacomas.. but I think I’ve been very thorough in this string of comments for both you and other fellow Tacoma owners that may have had questions on the making of this video. Once again, more than happy to do another video with dyno testings and even a manual tranny Taco. Have a few people wanting more in-depth reviews with a truck on a dyno and a manual tune comparison. Could be a great combo. Let me know and I’ll set it up!🤙🏼
The whole video was managed by WCT. We thank Ray for giving his honest opinions after driving with both tunes on his truck.. Ray was able to keep either tune he wanted at no expense or additional benefits to him regardless of which tune he felt performed better on his truck. It's that simple...
You made the obvious choice Ray 🤙🏾OTT FTW!
Great insight Ray! Thanks for taking the time to do this. 👍
What about mpg? How much did the different tunes affect average mpg or was it even enough to notice?
What is the best oil? I saw some guy saying Rotella is best.
Just bought my “new to me” 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD OFF ROAD and was considering buying a Magnuson super charger
But after watching this video I’m convinced that the OTT tune would suit my driving needs!
Thanks for the informative video
Been on the fence about getting my Toyota turned. Definitely on the fence about which tune to pick. Thank you very much for putting this video together!!!
OTT is an absolute game changer for the third gen tacoma. Get tuned and you will notice a difference before you can turn out of the parking lot.
Dave D did my truck. He’s legit.
2022 dblb 4wd sport owner here.
OTT here. Done by Q on my 22 OR Long Bed. Next to suspension and tires this has been the best money spent on my truck.
Just got my Taco tuned today with Q and the OTT. I can’t compare it to another tune, but I definitely go along with how smooth it shifts. Also, in this video and my own experience, Q is knowledgeable, professional and helpful. Highly recommended to anyone considering this upgrade
Right on 👍🏼🤙🏼!
Appreciate your feedback 👍🏼🤙🏼
I have the KDMAX & dont like that little jurk off the line, get sick of EASING on the throttle trying to get a smooth take off. Did you notice any difference in MPG?
You're killing it with the videos! Thanks for the info!
Thank you !👍🏼🤙🏼
I think to make it even more fair they should installed the tuning without letting the driver know what he was getting, that way the result would be 100% unbias.
Don't think, just do it. Thank us later!
dyno testing on both tune would have been great. the company doing their own dyno to advistise is too bias . i would have love a third party like raymond here to do it also. maybe a next video for that????
KDMax has the opportunity to take the OTT challenge... Whoever wants to step up from KDMax is more than welcome to do so.
If you end up trying the OTT let me know what differences you feel 👍🏼🤙🏼
Thank you very much to all who was included in making this video.
Time and time again - OTT has been proven to be the gold standard. Always honest to their customers and community. No manipulated/exaggerated data like other options out there - always backed by accurate performance data. This is what you can expect when a tune is created by guys with actual tuning experience.
Thanks for the comparison of the tunes!
Another great video. No fluff or filler videos here on this channel. Real world practical and useful information. A must subscribe channel if you are a Tacoma owner.
Appreciate you Jim!! And thank you!
Sure, show a long bed in my color!!! just put more salt in my wound!! LOL I'll get the OTT soon. Keep the great vids coming!!
LoL 😂
Great Color Choice 🤙
Thanks for making the comparison vid even tho I already knew OTT is better Definitely improves the performance of the truck. But really felt the difference going to 5.29 gears. Now the truck holds power. When it had stock gears and the OTT tune, It will still down shift going up a hill or trying to pass a car on the highway and it will hold the gear in high rpm’s. But now with the 5.29 gears and the tune I could be going up a hill and it will keep me in the same gear just with more acceleration and power with out having to down shift. Currently on 285/70/17 planing on going true 35s later down the road.
Definitely going with the OTT when i find out the closest location, Great video
Haha he did the Doxies beer thing "she doesn't always drive Taco, but when she does, she drives OTT Taco"
OTT for the win! Thanks for the comparison.
My pleasure!
Appreciate your feedback 🤙🏼!
@roncrow7976 reach out to your tuner for an update… no cost 👍🏻
How ironic…
Great video - I am hoping for a similar detailed one on a manual transmission.
Thank you! And I will see what we can do! 🤙🏼
I own a 3rd generation Tacoma (2023)
It should be no issues if I want to OTT it is the same powertrain as US.
Right?
Thanks 😊
Correct! Everything in regards to the powertrain should be the same 👍🏼👍🏼

What about the tried and true CVC Tune. Love that tune for the mountains
Love this vid it’s very informative.
I really appreciate this video.
You will love it 👍🏼🤙🏼
I’ve had the KDMax for about 6 months.
Thank you! Enter into the giveaway! You never know what the results will be 👍🏼🤙🏼!
Which kd max version are you on?
@@xylianis08 I have the most updated and set to middle setting.
I just read (today) that YotaWerk just acquired KDMax… I need to research and see what this means to me!
OTT FTW!
I went from Kd max to ott toque tune. I love it. It’s night and day difference. There is no lag in the shift. It always finds the rite gear. You will fall in love with your truck all over again.
Which kd max version did you have?
I had my Taco tunes with OTT this past weekend. So far, so good. If you are in the Western NY, Western PA area, hit up Chris in Buffalo. Very knowledgeable and patient with all of my questions.
Do you have his e-mail thanks and how much I’m in Boston NY can’t seem to find anyone
What about gas mileage? What is the difference for city and hwy mpg? Are either tunes better than stock?
How does altitude impact the tune and mpg?
Can you go back to stock if for some reason you wanted to
Yes you can 👍🏼

I live in Alabama, do I get a discount if I get the OTT tune here? I am a subscriber.
I would reach out to your local tuner and see if they have any promotions coming up soon. I’ve seen a few Tuners do special discounts for limited periods.
@@westcoasttaco Thank you so much
Great content, and video, forgive me if it's been asked, but whats the mpg now?
I’m averaging anywhere from 18 to 21 miles to the gallon with the OTT on my truck on the highway. Since he only did a week with each tune, it was hard to get the differences with the mpg’s… my guess is that both tuned probably provide the same increase in fuel efficiency.
Last I heard KDMax is out of business.
I've gotten use to my old Toyota Pickup with the linear throttle response using the mechanical throttle connection. But my newer Toyota Tacoma has the lag response and gear hunting is irritating.
Get it tuned and it will feel like a brand new Truck. 👍🏼
Interesting that KD (Dave) didn’t discuss or compare other tuning companies. He wasn’t threatened. This seems set up for sure.

It’s great.. it will help increase all aspects of the drivability and performance of the truck.
That surging happens to me with the OTT I’m convinced that comes from “enhanced throttle”
How was MPG’s vs each other? Or was it said and i missed it?

Should have tried controllability of throttle on 4 low
What were the cost of the tunes? Is one cheaper than the other? Thank you.
I would check with your local tuner for pricing as they may vary.. but for here in San Diego, it was $450 for the KDMax and $500.00 for the OTT.
Which one is best for the 2.7?
I think you’ll be happy with either tune, but you’ll probably find the most refinement with the Overland Torque Tune. Even with a 2.7 L engine.
So he "KDMax"said that after the first tune, if you need to change it it is free of service. But the local KDMax near me did my tune 2 yrs ago and now the 10.0 is out and he will charge $100 to update it.
I would push back on that.. a tuner should provide you with any updates free of charge. At least that’s what KDMaxx and OTT tuners claim.
Are there any tuners in the Chicago/NW Indiana area?

I have a good question
What if I have the OTT and some time in future when I bring my Tacoma to the dealer for maintenance and Toyota releases new ecu software and decides to update mine as it was factory update?
If that happens, the OTT Tuners will update your tune for free
Thanks Quoc! Tim you probably already picked up on this but Quoc is the OTT tuner in this video. You can take his word for it 👍🏼
I'm back with the 2.7 I4 cyl 2022 SR5 and after watching this, I think I'm ready to try the OTT and was wondering if you know of or could connect me with a certified licensed tuner in or near Memphis TN, that I can link up with to give it a shot.
@michaelhunt6227 There is a link to the tuner map in the descriptions.
Thanks Quoc! And Thanks Michael! You won’t be disappointed! Here’s a tuner in TN. Let us know how it goes!

Can you talk about different ocatnes as well? Was he running 91 at them time of tune for full experience or is higher octane not needed?
I run 91 all the time. The tune will adapt to either octane but I have noticed a significant difference in performance by running 91. Ray had a half tank of 91 when we started the tune and the filled up at the halfway mark with Regular. He said he liked the feel from 91 octane. Hope that helps 👍🏼

Right!? This is so beyond biased that it's legit comedy...
Don’t eceb tell the dealer about the tune I done get my truck worked on by the dealer only if it’s something that is it a warranty thing that the only reason I go to the dealer my brother has his own auto shop and I get my own parts under his account for me and I paid cash for 11 but I get his discount on whatever I buy in one of his mechanics so he does all my work on the side and we both have 2017 Trd sports Tacoma plus he has a 2021 forerunner Trd all blacked out
this is awesome but my tacoma cost too much money to risk it 🤣
You won’t regret it! Have had a lot of people have the same concern and trust me when I say this.. I totally get it.. but you will thank me if you do get it.. will be the best decision you will ever make with your taco 🤙🏼

Getting my truck tuned changed my mind about wanting to sell it.
Somebody send me a file for the OTT to try.

I have a 2023 TRD off Road Lunar and I’d love to have the tune. Love the truck but it needs it so bad.

@@westcoasttaco Well said!

Can you tune a brand new Tacoma? Is this going to affect the “break in” ?
You absolutely can and it is probably the best time to do it.. #1 the truck will break in better since everything will be running more organically from the beginning. #2 you will get the maximum enjoyment from your truck from the very beginning in how it drives.

I’m a little curious as to how the tunes were paid for and how much was charged for each tune.
When I asked earlier about cost this was your response “I would check with your local tuner for pricing as they may vary.. but for here in San Diego, it was $450 for the KDMax and $500.00 for the OTT.”
And when reading through the various comments you mentioned at least twice you paid $600 to make this video. I assume that was for mainly tune cost KDMAX and OTT.
You quote….
“I think one very important thing some people are looking past, is that this video wasn’t about Dave or Q.. it’s about Ray and his review of the tunes.. this video cost me $600.00 to make.. so definitively no paid advertising here…”
If the cost was $450 KDMAX and $500 OTT then tunes alone would have been $950 minimum?
This is not an unbiased video. The Overland is definitely being promoted to the owner.
Hey Westcoasttaco,
I’d address you on first name basic, but don’t know it.
That’s it…
I do appreciate your feedback as this platform is for all Tacoma owners to share their experiences with their Tacomas.. but I think I’ve been very thorough in this string of comments for both you and other fellow Tacoma owners that may have had questions on the making of this video.
Once again, more than happy to do another video with dyno testings and even a manual tranny Taco. Have a few people wanting more in-depth reviews with a truck on a dyno and a manual tune comparison. Could be a great combo. Let me know and I’ll set it up!🤙🏼
